  • If your balisong has tap or serious play, there is no need to send it in to be fixed (unless it’s a nautilus). Watch this video and I will tell you how to tune your butterfly knife trainer so that it has no tap and no play. Note, the tuning portion of this video does not apply to washer only/ bearing balisongs. This is the best way that I have found to get good tolerances and to also just get the thing running smoother if it’s dirty. The balisong I am tuning in this video is the squid industries Krake Raken v3. Let me know if this helped you out and if you have any questions.

    I tuned up my vulp that I’ve had since last January like six months ago and after the tune, I haven’t had to tighten it or clean it out once I’ve been using carbon honey oil and pretty much what I did was sand, the bushings and sand the washers down

    • @TheBuffnessFlips
      @TheBuffnessFlips  7 месяцев назад

      Nice! Congrats on doing it successfully. My Vulp is a beater and when I tuned it jt didnt hold. That was like 6 months ago though and I’ve learned a lot.

    Omg thank you for this, im getting a mako soon and i got a blue handle (mako is red) and i was kinda nervous about taking jt apart

    • @TheBuffnessFlips
      @TheBuffnessFlips  7 месяцев назад +1

      The mako is a washer balisong meaning the bushing tuning won’t help at all, same with the cranking down on the pivots however a lot of this will still be relevant information just ignore the bushing stuff.

    • @TheBuffnessFlips
      @TheBuffnessFlips  7 месяцев назад +1

      Also, there is nothing to worry about especially with a washer balisong. Just don’t strip screws or lose washers and you’ll be alright. It’s insanely hard to strip screws in a washer balisong so you will be fine.

    Excellent, excellent tutorial for a greybeard noob like me. Many thanks. One thing, though- At some point, you might want to upgrade to a diamond plate- It'll always stay 100% flat, and normal stones will not. Just a thought. 👍👍

    Hey nice video homie. Do you do some knife sharpening on your own with that stone? I've got the worksharp ken onion edition which honestly kicked off my re-fascination with knives and got me into butterfly knives. I need to get more comfortable with taking my butterfly knives apart and working the tuning on them. The Gaboon has a super crazy weight system I want to play around more with but I don't want to take apart the sandwich😂

    • @TheBuffnessFlips
      @TheBuffnessFlips  7 месяцев назад +1

      I have done a little bit of sharpening but it hasn’t been too pretty. I say you go for it with one of the gaboons. It’s pretty straight forward to disassemble a Bali and there isn’t too much that could go wrong as long as you don’t strip your screws.

  • @alanbarnett328
    @alanbarnett328 4 месяца назад +2

    Dude, absolutely superb tutorial. You went over a lot of questions I had about little things that aren't usually covered, and explained the things you were doing instead of just saying them. Like, not just "squeeze your handles", but "squeeze them *to stop the pivots from rotating*". I was worried about taking apart my bali because I didn't have replacement washers, but seeing that I can flip them over makes me feel a bit better.
    I'm worried about tuning bushings, don't you need to fully tighten the pivot to see if the tune is any good? And then wouldn't that chew up the washer, needing you to replace them every time you test the tune? Or does it matter that much?
    I've also got some questions about my balisong that I've been having a hard time finding the answer to. It used to have a really good tune (factory tune on BBSuperfly, came fantastic) but I dropped it a few too many times and now I've got a wee bit of tap. Is this because I've messed up my washers? I've tried to tighten the screws, and it doesn't budge even if I crank on it pretty hard. I've not had it too long and haven't tightened/loosened it before either. Nothing looks bent or scratched, so I'm hoping that I just need some replacement washers and the tune will go back to normal.
    Thanks again for the amazing tutorial, you've made me way less worried about taking apart and cleaning my bali!

    • @TheBuffnessFlips
      @TheBuffnessFlips  4 месяца назад

      Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful. Hope I can be helpful with answering your questions. You do want to fully tighten your bushings. It locking up means that the bushing is undersized. However, if you can tighten them all the way, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good tune as it could be oversized. If you crank down, and it is swings good, then you can even sand it further. Also, for your superfly, maybe tighten it really well, and oil it. Oil can work wonders. Especially a thicker oil. Could be the washers too. Let me know if you have other questions. Thanks for watching!

    • @alanbarnett328
      @alanbarnett328 4 месяца назад

      @@TheBuffnessFlips Yeah I tried oil, and that almost completely fixed it, but it still has some tap. In my head, dropping it would have squished the washers, leading to more play. Replacing them would then fix it. Is that how it works?

    Yeah my AS kraken has a good amount of tap and play but I'm just to scared to tune it cause I don't want to mess it up. but at the end of the day its only a 60$ clone, so does it really mater if I mess it up, No not really.

    • @TheBuffnessFlips
      @TheBuffnessFlips  7 месяцев назад +1

      No it shouldn’t be too risky either. Tuning can be pretty forgiving and easy enough if you do it right. Which I taught you how to do. Good luck. Def worth a shot.

      Try following the process of this video. It helped me a lot, just make sure to use the included Loctite when you reassemble everything for the last time. You can get the tap out of the Vulp if you sand down the bushings correctly. I speak from experience and from other’s experience. Good luck. Hope I helped.
