    In your diagram at 4:14 you show the blade being thicker than the bushing but it should be the other way around, otherwise the bushing wouldn't do anything as the washers would be pushed directly against the blade. The bushing needs to be a bit thicker than the blade so that when you tighten the pivot screw, the washers will be clamped against the bushing and leave a gap between the washers and blade

    • @hazelknives
      @hazelknives  Год назад +2

      I agree, this diagram was found online and hastily made to make a point. ideally, the bushings would be just bigger than flush with the blade to have that gap and allow for fluid motion and lubrication

      @@hazelknives not quite accurate on the well tuned bushings being tighter than bearings. If you took absolutely perfectly tuned LARGE outer diameter bushings, like the ones in the Konohishi, coupled with the durable titanium handles and steel hardware + steel washers, it can *compare* to perfectly tuned IKBS bearings. IKBS bearings are unique in that they're the only time that saying ZERO tap and ZERO play isn't an exaggeration. They're wild.

    It doesn't really matter if you put the bushing in the "wrong way" or at least in my experience it hasn't mattered but then again I'll take either side to the sand paper so maybe that's why it doesn't matter to much.

    • @hazelknives
      @hazelknives  2 года назад +3

      yeah, plus if a bushing is unevenly sanded the washer for that side will be unevenly worn so they even out, so flipping it would just cause the other washer to wear more than the other side. while it probably isnt a dealbreaker i just try to keep everything as controlled as i can when working

Aside from my Ti-Green Inked kraken which I applied too much locktite it seems, that thing wouldn't come out; thought it was due to a stripped screw but even using one of those stripped screw extractors it just made it worse. One of these days I'll get some super glue to grab the screw and use a solder iron to heat up the loctite (found some video that advised this after the fact)
      Currently using a Nautilus V2 which is perfect out of the box, and using a LDY Sirius V2 which I used your video to help understand where the tap was coming from after swapping to the trainer blade. Made me realize that bushings play a central role here, LDY includes an extra set of bushings but they aren't tuned. I feel like people shit on tang pins bc of the tang pins falling off or slipping or getting backed out. I heard the alpha beasts tang pins are really good and I was just wondering if that’s the same for the tang pins for the nautilus. Also are the bushings on the nautilus good and do they come in the right size? Sorry you had to read all that I just don’t know what to get. Anyways amazing video.

      my nautlilus has had zero issues with the tang pins so far, which is what ive heard is common with nauts. remember, youll hear more from people with bad experiences than those that have no reason to complain. also, my bushings came a little oversized, but i wound up tuning it and now theyre perfect. i wouldnt expect perfect bushings out of the box, but squid is really good with not sending out undersized ones. also, worst case scenario a tang pin comes off, hit up squid and theyll let you send it in to get fixed

      for one, bushing tuning can get very finnicky. knives like the brs replicant are a good example, where their tolerances are constantly changing regardless of the tune. its also an issue of how close youre willing to get before you risk undersizing the bushings, and some knives just kinda suck and dont take a tune well

    Is noone gonna tell him that he did 50% of the video out of the camera frame?

    • @hazelknives
      @hazelknives  2 года назад

      i know i did, i recorded the main footage before i did the intro and the setup was super janky. it was more meant to convey the method of tuning bushings as opposed to the rest of it

    Please redo the video, it's great don't get me wrong it would just me more informative for new flippers

      i kind of agree, but at the same time, i did refer people over to another, more informative video by lugermonger, and the fact that bushing tuning isnt really something a lot of beginner flippers would probably be doing

    You kinda fucked up it was out of frame the whole time no disrespect but it kinda defeats the purpose

    • @hazelknives

      i mean, the important bits of the video are all in frame, the setup/disassembly/sanding/reassembly, so i figured it got the point across pretty well

      @@hazelknives bushing is shown to be much smaller width than blade stock with part of the washer going down inside the hole. Oof.

    • @hazelknives
      @hazelknives  Год назад

      @@Nick_Gurr80 that was to demonstrate that the washers are made of phosphorus bronze, a material specifically meant to be soft. the idea was to show that the washers will shear to fit the inconsistencies in the bushing and blade. it wasn’t meant to be to scale or perfect, it was meant to convey that idea.

    its a trainer who cares its not like its a brs alpha beast or a model 85 benchmade you use a teflon based lube (tri-flo) example when is dries up still slick. throw it n the trash !!

      i can’t really tell if you’re serious or not, but if you are, a lot of us aren’t allowed live blades. i’m 17 but can’t have them yet due to my parents, and i’m sure this is the case for lots of other people. plus, regardless of the differences between trainers and live blades, taking care of your knives should always be applicable. it’s like saying you shouldn’t sharpen your beater ontario folder because it’s not some benchmade bugout, even though they both have value to the person using them

    Secure your paper to the smooth base with some light spray glue.... The paper rolled up on the sides will throw off your feel for "flat".
