I’m odd man out. That knotty pine was gorgeous and not too dark. To me it screamed “pair me with blue and white.”
Loved the bedroom white, though. Great ceiling. Magical yard. Thank you..
100% agree
Same.
I liked the before!
A very nice view at the very end of the video when the two attractive ladies sit at the garden table and have dinner (?) together. So sunny, colourful cosy. Greetings from Germany
Danke Georgia!!
@@quintessenceblg you answer in German... How sweet!!!
Love little, cozy homes and cottages. Where I live, I wish more developers/builders would make more homes like this, especially since people are economically struggling. Not everyone can afford (or wants) a McMansion.
Vintage Kitty couldn’t agree more - glad you enjoyed!
This place is still easy a million bucks. It’s Santa Barbara.
Yes! Yes! yes!
@@jamesrightasrain795 Much more than that I am pretty sure because as you say “it is Santa Barbara”
I love this house! Something seemed off with the sound though...very ringy. But yes, such a lovely space. Love that the architect shaved the living room wall so that you could see the view of the mountains!
This is just one of several Quintessence videos I revisit periodically to keep inspired and on course. Never gets old!
Thanks so much - happy to hear that!
The House in Tangier, Frank De Baisie, and the Bunny Williams ones, I always revisit.
John C Totally inspiring - just discovered this channel, and as a designer and maker, this kind of channel is so right up my alley to see how gifted talents arrange their homes and work their magic. 💖
I also love this house and have watched the video numerous times.
@@HeartandSoulApothecary Thanks so much - so glad you enjoy!
Thank you Susanna and Stacey, and Madeline for sharing your gorgeous home. The garden, the home, this is sooo cosy Susanna it was like opening a jewel box just watching this one.
Maree Versace So glad you enjoyed Maree! It IS like a jewel box!!
I’m the ONE daughter that appreciated/listened/LOVED to what my mom said and style in everything! MY MOM was so admired for her style, interior design, seamstress chef/cook, speaker...❤️❤️❤️😘🙏🇺🇸so THANKFUL
Bonnie Condon good communication is key to success!!!! Aameen.
Oh I know where you're coming from. My mother delivered her wisdom and her ideas about style in such casually delivered, colourful epigrams and declarations, and most usually followed by waves of the hand and statements like "but that's common sense, everybody knows that". Due to her self-assured delivery and elegance I've remembered most of these moments of clarity and direction as if they were carved into stone and they pop into my head at key moments in my life, aesthetically speaking LOL. Some people just have that sort of lifelong impact don't they? And as I've grown and aged, I realise that no, not EVERYBODY 'knows that'; my mother is just brilliant and modest and has no idea how cultured and stylish she really is, is all. I wonder if yours is so effortlessly marvellous also because it sure sounds like it. Lucky us, hey? :D
Paint those pine boards white...great idea mom! Reminds me of how I brushed off my mom. My mom was a nice lady, an introvert, she was shy and gently self effacing. I thought as a young woman that my mom had no style, no grace no ideas. How wrong was I. Looking back at photos she had huge amounts of style and grace and she had the gumption to try new interior deco ideas and garden layouts that have stood the test of time. I am old now, and in hindsight, really wish, when I was younger that I had listened more to her gentle guiding light.
I don't know how I have been out of the loop for so long, but I just discovered your charming channel. I couldn't be happier! I have been binge watching for the last three days! This home of Madeline's is one of my personal favorites. I too am a designer and a Susannah to boot! Soul sistas, kindred spirits for sure. I have watched several of these delicious forays into the personal homes of some of my favorite style makers, multiple times, pausing, going back over little snippets, there is so much fabulousness to take in! Your personality and wonderful comments, Susanna, make me feel like you are just bringing a few friends (your subbies) along for the sheer pleasure of sharing such intimate, ever so homey, visits that we could never be privy to on our own..."Uh, I'm a friend of Susanna's, she said I could come too!" 👍😉! I'm gonna have a hard time rationing these "treats" as I tend to become somewhat addicted to all this "eye candy"! I'm ever so THANKFUL I found you and all your "friends", on the day before Thanksgiving!... On to the next one!! 😙!
Susannah - you made my day!! So glad you have discovered our channel and enjoy tagging along - exactly what we hope viewers will feel - and yes, we said you could come too!! We loved Madeline's charming bungalow as well! Stay tuned - lots of great episodes coming! - Stacey (behind the camera and the blog)
Susanna has this amazing knack for looking so cool and looking like she got put together in 5 minutes at the same time. I wanna be her when I “grow up”, (and of course visit all these amazing homes and people)!
Yes, she always looks great! And so glad you enjoy our channel!
Gorgeous! And the garden is just so beautiful! You are right..... the house is a jewel box!
Lunch on the patio looks wonderful. If it ever gets warm enough here in Indiana, that's how I'll be eating. Beautiful home!
Hope you enjoy
This home speaks to me - I LOVE it! Here's to white paint, vintage details & thinking out of the box, no matter the size of the "box". Kudos to you Madeline. Thank you @quintessence !
My Soulful Home Our pleasure and completely agree! 🙏🏻
What a lovely home and garden. I would spend all of my time on that patio and in that garden. It's beautiful. And, the food looks lovely too! Thank you for sharing Madeline's home.
Cindy M Our pleasure and I think Madeline uses the outdoor space extensively - it is lovely snd she prepared an incredibly delicious lunch!
This house is so invitingly cosy and delightful, with some truly beautiful pieces. A relaxingly little retreat that makes the most out of every space. I do like this lady's style a lot, even lunch looked a feast for the eye, and healthy too!
Exactly as you surmised!! I could have moved right in - and lunch was delicious!!
This little home is A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!! Madeline did a superb job of renovating into a peaceful little retreat. All the little details of hardware, woodwork and decor made it so interesting and a conversation starter for sure. The antique furniture is amazing and how she managed to find twin pieces so large to fit into such a small home is genius. By putting the bed, lamps and night stands into the recessed wall of her bedroom and how she was able to make it look so simply elegant was a surprise for me. I only wish I could have seen more of her kitchen and garden but her garden table was set perfectly for an early dinner outdoors with a friend. Thank you again Susanna and Stacey for all your efforts to bring us quality videos to feed us our insatiable design fodder. Loved this video!
Thanks so much Amy!! We agree - Madeline did a fantastic job - we could have both moved right in! So appreciate your thoughtful comment and support!
Amy Hoffmann so
glad you enjoyed Amy!! Thank you so much for watching
I love how she said that everything sparks joy for her ... and that she is a collector and enjoys a Saturday afternoon finding a treasure ... that is how I feel, too! Thank you ladies for another priceless video ... I can not tell you how much I treasure and soak up your videos (over and over again). It’s so neat because I will see something new when I watch it over again. Thank you! You ladies are amazing!!
Thank you so much Bonnie - thrilled you enjoy our channel! And yes, lots to glean from Madeline here!!
Thank you for such a wonderful compliment!! Please stay tuned!!
I could sip tea and hang out reading a good book all day there. Lunch looked fabulous.... xoxox
M Alba It was!! Beautiful and delicious! Glad you enjoyed!
What a lovely pied a terre, I think I would just move there and call it quits on my other home, but isn't it nice to have the ability to go from your home in the suburbs (or wherever) and have a lovely place like this in the middle of the city? Amazing finds. Loved what she did with the bedroom entrance and how the space looks larger even though it is small and have such large pieces of furniture and it all blends.
It is such an enchanting getaway!! We could have also moved right in!
Love Sunday afternoons and viewing your awesome interviews and videos of beautiful fun homes. Thank you, ladies.
Joe Bon Thanks so much Joe!!
Another GREAT episode Susanna.... brava
Brian About Town So glad you enjoyed!
Just wonderful -- a charming home with so much to see! My favorite part was her green dishes and her outdoor table setting! Gorgeous!! She revived the house -- and her home is a perfect jewel!
teacatz3 It is indeed - glad you enjoyed!
Oh my goodness! This jewel has my name all over it. Beautiful home, gardens and city. Win, win, win! Thank you Quintessence for another fabulous adventure.
HRHPaula Isn’t it so charming?! So glad you liked too!
I revisit this video over and over again because it brings me joy
So happy to read that! Enjoy!
I love how you went into the structural details. It's amazing that the changes that were made (that bedroom ceiling, for example) look so much more more "original". It's like the house was waiting for her to bring it to exactly what it was meant to be. So thoughtfully done!
K B Exactly! And totally agree!
These are my treats, quintessence , can not wait for the next, lovely dreamy well designed homes, thank you so much for your excellent production.Susan and friends.
Beautiful, Santa Barbara is absolutely amazing!!! My husband was born and raised there.
How beautiful, and so nice to see a smaller property visited. I loved how she revived the place and the garden and orange tree ooh loved that.
It is so charming - I could have moved right in. Glad you enjoyed!
I particularly enjoy the before and after images of this house. They did an absolutely wonderful job and so comfortable yet elegant.
Couldn’t agree more! Could have moved right in!
One word- Superb. It was lovely before ,i agree, but she has understood the house and has made it better.I am looking up her other projects
Another inspirational video. I love it when windows frame the view - It's a form of timeless art. Great job!
Thank you for yet another fabulous video, ladies!!
Thank YOU - glad you liked!
Bonjour to both of you ! Now that was a surprise to see such a small house hiding wonderful things. It is small yet practical and very well done. The garden is gorgeous, every plants/trees look so healthy and full of life. Thank you for such a nice tour, Stacy and Suzanne. - Rosalind -

Enid Perez our pleasure!!
Yay - so glad and yes she is!!
I adore your videos ! I just wish they were longer, but if you need to keep them short, may I suggest...make a series, example; part 2 , 3 and 4 of the same property. I find myself wanting to see more of this jewel box. Please give some serious thought, to making a 20 minute video of Madeline's little get-away!. I can't wait to see more !!!
I’m always so happy when you post a video! Love you girls ❤️💯👍
Sandy Lunden Thank you Sandy!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
You have the best job in the world to visit these spaces-some I’ve adored and others that are totally new, but I love all of them!! I’m in love with the pups, too, of course!! 🐶
We do feel privileged to be able to visit all these talented designers at home and love being able to share their creative ideas and spaces! So glad you enjoy tagging along!
Thank you so much I so agree
LOVE IT! So simple and elegant. I love seeing rich people's homes....they got it down.
I like the original paneling would have left it alone. I appreciate how she restored the house and kept it in character with the age of the house. Please do more jewel box homes
What a lovely make over. I am glad Madeline listened to her mother (in the end) and painted over the knotty pine. Mothers are always right, you know. :-D
MT Yankin 👍🏻😉🙏🏻
Beautiful interesting cosy home... I love all the collected items showcased so well.
Just stunning. What a little beauty. Loved the bedroom....dreamy
M L It is a little gem!
Absolutely gorgeous house and garden!
We have visited Santa Barbara for the first time in February this year and we’ve put it up on to the list of our favorite places in California.
Small space with a Grande Effect! Bravo
Very beautiful home. Love the thoughtful details and indoor-outdoor connections! Well done!
Teri White Yes to all!
Love this house and gardens also love Santa Barbara!!!!
We do too! Glad you enjoyed!
Love this home so much! Was wishing I had a magazine layout of the home so I could study every nuance and detail of each room. My favorite decade 20’s and style~ Mediterranean architecture. It’s everything!
My favorite time and style too!!! Houses built during that time period have so much more detail and quality work.
Loved this tour. Thank you
Debbie Riedel our pleasure!
That is indeed a little jewel, and in one of my favorite places!
This home is just gorgeous! It truly warmed my soul!
Beautiful home and I love that it is smaller, appeals to my minimalist nature!! Thank you for the lovely tour❤️

I just fell in love with your collections, wow!your garden is so beautiful, top it all your ceiling!!!thanks so much for sharing. I learn a lot fom you.!!!
What a gorgeous patio ,I just loved it , thank you so much for your beautiful video 🌸🦋💕
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the simple white bookshelves. A friend was closing her bookstore where I live so I bought eight of her bookshelves, these that were well made to hold hardbacks but were natural colored pine...I painted those white to display some books, many large pieces of my Mexican talavera Mexican silver serving piece collection and in my bathroo,s, open storage for towels. Instead of the red Saltillo style tile here used for traditional homes, I installed cream marble oversize tile which expands them sizes of them rooms visually and are surprisingly easier to keep clean than the Saltillo type tile...the light floors also adds light reflection to the room which was needed. Too many Spanish colonial homes here have the feeling of dark depressing caves because they have dark wooden beamed and planked ceilings...which really ARE lovley. Then they muse whitewash on the plaster walls BUT the dark ceilings and floors make you feel really boxed in, even the the ceilings are high ones.
Ah ,I love her home ,thank you for this amazing video again :)
Vlora Kullashi our pleasure!!
Happy dining !!! There's nothing more tasty than a table full of home-made organic foods

The house of Santa Barbara
So beautiful
For introducing beautiful houses
I feel very good this morning
채채 Thank you - so glad you enjoyed!
I love this House so much and the Gardens 😍😍😍
One of my all time faves!
So glad!
Just shows....... it doesn't have to be a huge house to be welcoming, stylish and comfortable. Only thing that spoils it is the sound quality. Love the dogs too! 🐾
It is beautiful! I don't think I would describe the "before" as completely derelict. Everyone has different taste and styles.
Now it's chic, different style and taste.
Derelict?!? Hmmm... I saw the ‘before’ photos and definitely it wasn’t even remotely derelict! I do love the way she has re-done the house however, Calling the sweet cottage look as derelict is bit snobbish because a place that is truly derelict cannot even compare with how the house was before being redone!
Vasanthi Mehta - Hahaha, yeah well, Santa Barbara CA.
Agree, some of the original features could have been kept but probably needed the new doors, windows and other upgrades.
Agree with you. I actually prefer some aspects of the ‘before’ pictures.
I really hope that when they have to sell some day, they will choose the right buyers. Beautiful home.
Beautiful home in a gorgeous area....love Santa Barbara and area.
Dear Madeline, I love your broadcasts, especially the charming animated introduction. There was an occasion you visited a couple who had an outdoor bath and you expresed a wish to try this facility. You were not staying there, as far as I could see, so I was embarrassed that you asked to do this.
Madeline is the subject of this video but our channel host is Susanna. And that was just a whimsical fun moment in the bath - not meant to be serious - and the homeowners totally enjoyed it!
Love all our your videos but this one is simply "delicious". A little "jewel box" styled by Madeline Stuart is now my #1gift wish on my Santa´s list this year. Keep sharing beautiful homes. XO
Thank you - we just loved Madeline's jewel box bungalow!
Simply spectacular
👍🏻👍🏻
I watch many “home shows”, but keep coming back to Quintessence. I rewatch many segments (Mark D. Sikes, Gianetti Farms, Suzanne Rheinstein, Jill & Ray Weeks, Alex Papacristidis, Bunny Williams to name a few of my favs. Love Suzanna’s charming personality and Stacey is wonderful too!
