I loved conquest growing up. If I remember correctly this space station was the cheaper one. The more expensive station was the regular spacedock. So it’s supposed to be like a rinky dinky cheap version of the bigger star base

Conquest was literary one of my favourite Star Trek games as a kid but obviously Star Trek online as a teen and even resurgence now in 20s some of the best games we ever got

I played this game on PS2 so when you're in a system you build three things. One of two types of starbase: a advanced starbase or a starbase one's cheaper and once more expensive and then on the other side of the system you can choose to have one of two : A science station or mining facility. You can also deploy weapon platforms you can have them on their own or they will appear around the stations you build.
Haven't we established by now that they design these things not by scale, but by shape & esthetics and then just stick it in where they want it; it's probably one of those Star Trek tropes that won't go away until they get some extremely serious designers involved or Starships actually become a real thing! 💯
Its cutouts call out to a then-yet-to-be-created Picard Season 2 Confederation alternate designs.
Conquest was fun, but i prefer Legacy and Online. 💁♂️

That negative space for bigger ships?
I was thinking even just docking for any ships, not necessarily just big ships. Ships that are going in for extensive repairs go inside the dock, ships just visiting briefly to refuel & resupply just dock to the outside DS9 style.
