This is a interesting trick, but if i can offer 1 change that would make it even better. Real chemical reactions, acid based especially, smoke, and the smoke is usually dangerous, In the particular of stainless and nitric acid, the liquid turns much more black, with the brown color being the smoke, if you can figure out how to make it smoke, even if its just normal white water vapor type smoke, and of course play up the danger of the smoke, it would sell the trick 100 fold. Great trick though, and you did really sell it.
I would add respiratory protection!

@@joewas2225 she didn't prove nothing at first, only at the end she pretended to proved it was acid...
you could use a small sodium stone, it reacts wildly in contact with watter, it could even burst on fire, but if it is small enough it most probably will only make some smoke...
@@manusoftar yeah, she can make this at the beginning with a 5th test shot glass that is set up aside by an assistant

I think it might work better if you proved that the acid bottle contains acid first, and I would add respiratory protection as well. Not necessarily to make the magic better, but to lead by example on using the correct equipment when handling dangerous chemicals. Fun trick though and great performance!

acid it was not, and the ending is a fake spoon made from cola sweet . used to eat cola sweets made into spoons, knife forks, sprayed silver with food pigment
The spoon could be real, except it has an easily breakable part on the handle. It's the small amount of stuff BEHIND the spoon that did the trick. Notice how the back of the spoon reacted first and how she did not show us the whole - especially the back - of the spoon.

As someone who has no knowledge of magic my first instinct was that the spoon is not what it looks like. Great performance though and delightfully unacceptable levels of punnery.

They already knew it was not real nitric acid coz of the show rules and they knew the prop so pretty tough to fool them

The spoon was the prop Penn referred to. Its used a lot in finger magic. If you look the spoons mouth piece didn't melt. The color dye wasn't dark enough to hide it.
Pentagram is just the star pentacle Is the star in a circle.
is the spoon silver or stainless ? in my country silverware means actualy made of silver ..., probs just has mentos taped to the back of the spoon
That Penntagram protected you yes, but that could’ve been any Penndant as well
I think the issue here is Penn and Teller know from the outset it can't be dangerous acid due to the rules.
You literally see how the acid reacted with the spoon. It was clear it was the real deal.

@@glenpolen5562 im thinking all 4 shots were water, and the spoon was a gimmick. either made of something reactive, or hiding (as we didnt see the back of the spoon) something reactive. given the "plop plop, fizz fizz" im going to guess an antacid and some food dye to react with the water. a second guess would be similar but, vinegar in lue of the water and again something reactive. baking soda maybe, but im not sure if antacids react with vinegar so, could be that too.

@@glenpolen5562 100% a guess, im no magician. Learned a handful of tricks as a teen, but I always thought the real fun was trying to figure out how its done on my own. Like solving a puzzle, vs looking up the answers.
Warm water and a gallium spoon with a fizzy tablet on the back is my guess!

Gimmicked spoon. It's not actually metal, and the "Nitric Acid" isn't actually nictric acid. It's just a harmless liquid like vinegar or something that will react with whatever the spoon is made of. Still a cool trick :P
The spoon is made from gallium, it melts in warm water. It can even melt on a warm hand and its safe, unlike Mercury. So, they were all filled with warm water and a gallium spoon with some fizz on the back (Alka-Seltzer), along with some food colouring.
It's not the spoon. It's the small amount of stuff BEHIND the spoon. Funny how the back of the spoon reacted first. And funny how the spoon faces us throughout.

... this seems obvious. I'm sure that she is an impressive magician, but having a spoon that will dissolve and fizz (presumably with chocolate and bicarbonate, maybe?) in water seems like it is better suited for less professionals than P&T.

I suspect the 'acid' was also water, with the spoon being soluble to give the effect of being melted.
The spoon was probably made of Gallium. It's a very soft metal that has a very low melting point. Put it in warm water and it'll "dissolve."
@@chrisboerma7585 I just think the spoon was a two-piece gimmick. The color change was likely something she dropped into the water behind the spoon. Notice at the end when he mentions Teller's "idea?" He says it was a "pouch on a string." He also mentioned that there was a prop serving double duty. And she grabbed the pendant right before the last stage of the trick "for protection." I think it had a small capsule or pouch of some chemical she could drop in the water with the spoon.
Nitric acid is not indistinguishable to water because nitric acid smells like shit

Just because you Nitric Acid bottle says “Nitric Acid” on it, doesn’t make it so. Also, adding coloring and a fizzle tablet to the back of a broken spoon is not that difficult as well.
This was the real deal, she was sadly sent to the hospital after an audience member she performed for chose incorrectly.
If you ever do accidentally taste the acid, make sure you ALWAYS have some Alka-Seltzer on hand. It should help relieve the pain in your stomach as you slowly pass out.

So... uh.. there are a few problems.
a) Nitiric acid is too dangerous to just have on hand at all, small concentrations are kinda okay, but it would be terrifically irresponsible to have some on stage. It's because..
b) It's fuming toxic, it's a very reactive acid which is not very safe to breath nearby even without a visible reaction, and that also results in that..
c) It smells, and you would be able to tell it's the acid easily
d) Using metals as the reactants is suboptimal.. Well, it's a bit weird. HNO3 is so highly reactant that it isn't. It passivates a lot of common metals (including Iron and Aluminium) in concentrated form, and while diluted it does work with iron, it reacts slowly, it's not a flashy reaction. And actually you wouldn't want a flashy reaction because...
e) The flashy reaction produces lots of NO2 a very toxic gas because of which we only do Nitrogen related experiments in the specialized ventilated conditions.
f) Using organic material is also suboptimal, as nitric acid reacts with organic natter in a non-destructive way, it just makes stuff yellow most of the time, so you shouldn't really be using Nitric acid at all.
g) It's hard to think of any acid that would really work as they pretty much all fume visibly, and it would be really obvious which one is acid.
Chemistry is fun, but it's also not omnipotent.
You could use NaOH (lye) instead, except the dissolving reactions happen real slow as well, but it would be demonstrative to have some other metal salt solution (like Al or Cu) to form a visible precipitate

@@denisgames3455 Most of it is school level reinforced by doing the experiments at university, as well as seeing stuff on Periodic Videos. I'm not an expert on this part of chemistry though, I haven't had a good opportunity to play with Nitric acid in person.
You must poop over every party you go to. This is magic, not chemistry; your focus is in the wrong area.
@@r0bw00d Imagine something you have a lot of knowledge about, Idk, baseball, Harry Potter lore, computer science, etc. And some other person does a magic show based on that thing which obviously attracts your attention. And then whatever they are doing has deep misunderstandings on how the thing even works which makes the illusion just not work at all.
There is also a level of disappointment in that things that should be common knowledge (like just how acids look smell and work in general) just aren't
