Very unpopular opinion: Given the roster construction, I feel Dallas is stronger after the trade. I believe a starting five of Kyrie, Thompson, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively, is stronger than if you replaced Davis with Luka. Luka gives you more offensively, but not a lot more (3 points and 5 assists more per game) but Davis gives you a lot more defensively. For me, this Dallas team is now stronger than it was lat year, and has a better chance at a title with Davis on the team that with Luka (but I don't think will pass OKC either way). The problem is, in 2 years, not only the contract of Luka would be up, but also the one of Kyrie (he will probably pick the option), PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford maybe even Klay's. And with the amount of money Luka's contract would commend, not only, you wouldn't be able to resign them all, most would be entering career decline (Klay already is), so you wouldn't want to anyway. But you would already be over the cap to be able to add anyone relevant in free agency. This way, they will be competing for a title this season and the next, and after next season, not only will they be able to clear all their big contracts, they will still be able to get value in return for Anthony Davis and some of their younger core, if they don't feel they are worth build around (Lively, Hardy, Christie...). Had they kept Luka, they would still be a good team, but not as strong in my opinion, and then, but then either make him the biggest contract in NBA history, that would make it impossible to build around given cap constrains, or let him leave for nothing or next to nothing (sign and trade). There has been a shift in the reality of NBA. Role players are now demanding All Star player salaries.
