It’s a complete myth that density is bad cities and towns of all sizes and there is actually evidence that it can make our cities safer and more pleasant. Of course overcrowding is a very real issues for some cities but Philadelphia is actually praised by city planners for its appropriate density. In fact high density and non car infrastructure make a significant improvement in livability especially for those who cannot afford or are not able to drive a car. I love the character offered by historic dense neighborhoods personally and Philadelphia has lots of that. I also enjoy more quiet and private environment but you can find that in dense small towns and truly rural areas. All this to say that the “density is bad” mindset is bad because it drives us towards economically unsustainable solutions like car dependent sprawl and strict zoning laws that restricts economic development just to please only some of the population

The ppl who complain about "overcrowding" tend to be suburban ppl not used to having a lot of ppl around them. I mean in the video parking was cited as the 3rd reason to not move there! Like seriously, Philadelphia is a densely populated city built up long before cars came into existence and yet they expect a lot of plentiful and cheap parking like In a typical sun belt city. Let's be real, this video is directed towards white suburbanites who tend to despise cities anyway because of muh crime and parking.

The problem with letting Facebook/crazy uncle drivel pass for educational content is you get people with a big platform muddying the waters. Like you’re saying, density isn’t bad and it doesn’t track that nobody likes it, especially as the US population is actually urbanizing over time. And crowding is when you have too many people per housing unit. Los Angeles is actually the most overcrowded city in the US, and it has a much lower population density than Philadelphia.

At the beginning of the video you said the population is decreasing and then you said the population is ever-growing. If anyone is wondering, the population actually increased from 2021 to 2022 and 2022 to 2023.
I live in Philly and moved here in 2021. It's far from overcrowded, I don't drive so I don't have to deal with traffic or parking (instead I take the bus, train or bike - and public transportation isn't amazing but it's better than most American cities). The winters aren't bad - nothing like a midwest winter. This winter was incredibly mild and didn't even snow properly. As far as COL goes it's affordable for a city of this size.

I used to live in Philly and would certainly move back. It’s a beautiful town with a lot to do. As for this video.. I like your channel but do disagree with you some of the negatives in this particular video. You barely touched on why it’s important to preserve history. Idk anything about the trees in Oregon, but preserving the buildings where this country was literally founded in Philly is so important and it actually adds to the uniqueness of the city. I wish Philly would do more to play up its historic roots. As for the traffic - it’s bad in any major city. I lived in Atlanta for a while and that city is way worse than Philly. I was in South Fl - bad traffic. I was Dallas - bad traffic. Austin - bad traffic. I mean, idk how a city with millions of ppl are supposed to get around that. Which brings me to public trans. Philly isn’t that bad. One of the most popular modes of transportation is walking. It’s easily one of the most walkable cities in America which I personally love. And lastly crime - yeah philly is bad right now, particularly in certain neighborhoods. It breaks my heart. I love that town. I hope things get better. But I will say crime has gone up globally since the pandemic. So it is unfair to single out philly. Anyway, again - love the channel. But for anyone who watched this video - don’t be deterred from visiting this town. It’s one of the most interesting places in the country.

Yes, Philadelphia (filthydelphia, killadelphia, ... ) is all those things listed in the video. I travel across the Ben Franklin daily then take 6th street to work. The roads are in bad condition with many potholes. There are a lot of buildings left vacant and not maintained. Also a lot of construction of new housing (gentrification) . And on and on.
Still, Philadelphia also has interesting places and people throughout. Native Texan here. I moved to the Philly area in early 2000. There was a time when I would walk throughout the Italian Market, Reading Terminal, Rittenhouse Square, Boathouse Row, and other spots, carrying a DSLR and taking photos of people on the streets. No one gave me a hard time. Many stopped and smiled and even chatted with me for a while. I know folks say Philly has attitude. I found that this attitude doesn't mean they are truly unfriendly. I came to think of it as Chilladelphia. ;)

I love Philly too. Born and raised here. I've always said Philly is a hidden gem on the East Coast. But I came to a realization that the city I grew up in and fell in love with is no longer that same city. What made Philly so special to me is the sense of community in our neighborhoods, walkability, public transportation, and most importantly housing affordability. And it seems like all of these things have vanished, beside the walkability. These newcomers/transplants have changed the dynamic that made Philly special. There's no sense of community, SEPTA's condition and services have become deplorable, and housing has become unaffordable. Also, crime has been ridiculous which I think it has to do in part with the disruption of social cohesion in our communities from gentrification displacing longtime residents. It's sad to see what Philly is now.

I currently reside in Philadelphia. I would say a lot of this is sadly true BUT 1) there are a lot of folks working to change this and some of these initiatives are actually gaining momentum 2) there is more to these issues than this. For example: you mentioned waste and recycling and before the pandemic that was lowering, but then the Kenney Administration completely gutted a whole department oriented toward that to save money. Also it was recently ruled that the way PA schools are funded is unconstitutional - so we are hopeful our schools will start to receive the funding they deserve, Philadelphia has been particularly affected by that funding. In reference to crime, I won't pretend it isnt an issue, it is. But before 2020 the Kenney (the current mayor) administration's total homicide number was lower than all previous mayors up to Goode (1984). If you are interested in moving to Philly do not let this video disway you there are many good things about this city! It's convenient to New York City and DC and even other smaller cities. It can be tight knit in certain neighborhoods. There's a certain grit that often gets mistaken for meanness. Philly is also extremely walkable (although it could be better!). I love Philly.

Public transit is never perfect, but it is a damn sight better there than here in Vegas. Unless you work in the suburbs where the trains don't go, you can live there without a vehicle. I think it's preferable, in many ways.
The people can be brusque with you, but if you make friends there, they are some of the most loyal, kind hearted and giving people ever. I made lifelong friends in Philly and in Jersey who are amazing people. It's Gritty but it's my Adopted Hometown.

Plus, there's no rent control, and the market here is still too 'hot' to buy a home. I don't think they're going to make the casinos here do their part to truly recycle and conserve Lake Mead. If you are a young adult transferring to a job or finished internship in the area and single, it should not be a problem. You must be aware of your surroundings. I would not recommend raising a family here unless you live in the Greater Northeast or Northwest of the city (Chestnut Hill). However if it revolves around the subway in general (which NYCs is confusing whether you research accordingly beforehand or not), you’ll get fairly direct & straightforward info from most locals you ask in that particular regard; down to whether you’re on a local or express platform.

But it's not a crimeless world. There isn't any place in the world that you can move where crime doesn't occur, or where crime didn't happen.
The place where your body is at at 24/7 is a place where perhaps billions or trillions have died at since the beginning or close to it .
    There's no escape anywhere.

We need to stop thinking about “traffic” when rating a city. We need to modernize, get rid of roads, reduce car dependency. No matter how big we make roads and add parking it’s never enough, because the more we make it accessible to cars the more people will drive increasing traffic. If you need to go downtown from near the city, take a bus, bike, walk. It’s counter intuitive to American culture, but if you reduce cars in the city through bike lanes, you’ll increase people traffic. Just look at NYC, there’s no other city in the states with that many people, and they are doing a fantastic job of getting people out of their car.

Seen scads of your videos & enjoyed most of them. But WHOA! This one on Philly is very uneven, amigo. You hit the nail on the head on several of these points: crime, schools, not a great place to raise a family, and TRASH (we call it Philthydelphia), Dont; forget the Philly Phans -- they are brutal. But with fewer data points for some of these issues about why people aren't moving here, you lack cred. Parking and pizza? Come on. Philly has a large Italian population & there must be some excellent pizzerias here! Philly is known as the Cheese Steak and Hoagie Mecca. The weather? Are you nuts? Cf: Lake Tahoe right now. Of course, if you compare Philly to San Diego, you are comparing apples and oranges. Crowded? Think New York! Cost of housing? Compare DC. BTW - my wife & I see many more New York license plates moving into the Northwest section of Philly. And Rocky Balboa is not really that important compared to the Constitution and the Liberty Bell and colonial history. We have excellent museums and music -- some of the best in the world. (We also have large mob hits that show up on the front pages for entertainment.)

What's the point of a 6/8 lane expway blasting through the historic water front when people take the NJTP for points north and south anyway? Building it there was a mistake, taking it away would create so much developable waterfront real estate, room for parks...

I don’t even live there but this list is completely divorced from reality. What exactly is the video author looking for in a city? Rural Montana with Manhattan-level amenities?
Philly is America’s cheapest walkable human-scale city. Cars isolate humans, but walkability fosters human interaction. It’s desirable for driving and parking to be inconvenient. Why should the quality of life in the center city be sacrificed at the altar of pleasing lazy suburbanites? As for murder rate, everyone knows what that’s a code word for. Murder rates are so low across the country, and heart disease is what’s actually going to kill you. You know what prevents heart disease? Physical activity like walking. Philly is the only city with ample mid-rise housing (3-6 stories), which is the housing stock that every other city in America is sorely lacking. The winters aren’t event that bad. With climate change, it’s only getting more mild from here on out. The bus network is great. They come all the time and go everywhere. And Philly is a great place to raise a family. I’m a multimillionaire working in NYC but Philly is where I’ll be early-retiring to raise my children. Philly is an A+ city, an absolute hidden gem. Please none of you move there, I’d like it to stay affordable.
The trash situation in Philly is bad though, that part is accurate.

To be clear in my previous comment, I am not from Philadelphia, I am from Hamilton, OH which is between Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio. I lived in San Diego, CA (which I loved) for three years, then came to Philadelphia aboard the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk in 1987. Philly was a mess back then, high crime and all. But I found the people very friendly and helpful. I have never been for want of friends or a employment. I have never been unemployed since 1987 (July 3rd to be specific) and I have always had good friends. And when the Navy offered to pay for my flight back to Ohio, I declined and decided to stay in Philly, I have not ever once regretted that decision, even though they offered to fudge my paperwork and send me anywhere in the U.S. I wanted to go. Philly is a city of opportunity for work, a place with lots of live entertainment, restaurants and bars. Raising a family in the city, yeah probably not that, you'll want to go to the suburbs for that, but isn't that every big city?

I grew up only about 5-7 miles outside of Philly, currently live basically on the border just in a neighboring County to cross into Philly is about 4-6 min drive light-medium traffic and my family all was born and grew up there before me and my two brothers. I spent a lot of time in the city as I boxed in North/NE Philly, had friends and family that live/lived there and I like the people, food and the city in general much more than the suburbs where I spent a lot of time in Philly. To my point you nailed pretty much everything on the head besides one thing the pizza comment you made is way off Philly is constantly ranked in the top 5 sometimes top 3 in the country for not just best food but also pizza. I can name you 5-10 really good pizza places off the top of my head and don't take advice on Philly food from suburbanites they have the most atrocious taste in food and bland palates. Besides everything else you were right on point especially the traffic, trash everywhere,no one recycles especially in the suburbs, crime, cost of living is expensive etc I didn't finish the video yet as I'm on #3 crime but drugs should be on this list Philadelphia has been a haven for all types of drugs and drug use especially opioids(Heroin&Fent) and methamphetamine as there is a whole neighborhood Kensington that is a giant open air drug market, drug use in the open and people just sleeping and using up and down the sidewalk for blocks.
