    I love how this shows that you don't need the most fancy techniques for competitions like this. Just simple techniques done well, a strong vision and diligance will get you 99% of the way there. This is stunning work and I love how you don't overcomplicate things when explaining them. Lots of painters use lingo that turns off newbie painters. You explain things nice and plainly, even at this level of skill.

    2:34 I am usually pretty zen when building mini's and I think that is why I appreciate that part of the hobby. I understand that is not the same for everyone. In fact I remember you (Vince) saying that with most projects you rather paint than build and thus are ok with cutting corners.

  • @emilykhan8706

    When using the tape, I had a thought about painting house using tape for mask--you mask then use either a layer of the base color or a layer of clear poly to seal the tape and then you go ahead with adding the second color. This way, the base or clear layer seals the gaps between tape and surface and you don't get any accent color bleeding under. (Of course, this negates the "free edge highlight" which might be a bit of a bummer.)

    • @samuelbroad11
      @samuelbroad11 2 года назад +1

      just about to mention this. A couple of clear coats really does prevent bleeding.

    17:07 I can tell that you are trying to get an even distance between the stripes. What can help is to place twice as many pieces of masking tape with no spaces in between en than remove half of them.
    LOL: you mentioned that option 30 secs later... That's what I get for posting right away. The reason I do that is because that way I don't forget what I was trying to say, but I run the risk of this happening. Oh well, there is always the edit button.

  • @NewInheritor
    @NewInheritor 2 года назад

    Hey Vince, firstly, another great video and an incredible looking model. I love that you could absolutely guess you were the one who painted it without being told.
    In this video and a few recently, you've talked a lot about working with very thin paints through the airbrush, which if I understand correctly allows you to both have more control when building blends and work closer to the mini because the thinner paint means you can run the airbrush at a lower PSI.
    I've tried working thinly recently (ratios like 1 paint to 8 thinner) but whenever I do, I get paint drying incredibly quickly on the tip of my airbrush. Am I missing something obvious? It's not particularly hot or dry where I work so I'm not sure what the problem is.

    Ala lets say you want to build a tree on your gaming base or a wall or anything like that.

    11:50 very true. Thin oil washes can not only have a minimal effect, which might be something your where going for, but worse can more easily separate on you. Since I switched to thicker oil washes, this hasn't happened once.

    • @VinceVenturella
      @VinceVenturella  2 года назад +1

      It’s always okay to ask anything. :) - I’m varnishing as a save point, so if I mess anything up. I can flood the area and remove it more easily. It also protects all of those other thin layers from being disturbed. I am working with very thin glazes here and they are fragile. I don’t generally use gloss, as that is hard to paint over (that the point, that’s why it’s glossy) my mix of satin and ultra matte flattens finish while protecting

    When you mask, you should respray your base coat first. It seals the edges of the tape and you get crisper lines.

    Another question Vince (still rewatching this video regularly...) - in general I've had great success with oil washes for pin washing/panel lining. My one problem though is when it comes to big stuff like a knight chassis, when I slap a good oil wash all over the metal skeleton, it never seems to "dry" right. I put that in quotes, because it seems dry, but the model will stay "sticky" and glossy in places, even days later. Any idea what I'm talking about/advice on what I might be doing that causes this?

    • @VinceVenturella

      Sounds like it's too thin. Note, you will always need to wipe and clean up to some degree, but it sounds like either the pil paint is bad somehow (lower quality, hard to say) or we're getting it too thin and it's breaking up the material.

    • @ol_zoolicious
      @ol_zoolicious 11 месяцев назад

      It’s probably not a quality issue (Windsor Newton oils and their Sansodour thinner) - but definitely could be too thin, I’ll work on that

    38:18 I have been working on getting a very smooth base rim and the best way I have found is to find black paint that will self level like Vallejo Black Primer (also more durable than regular paint). Put it on thick, but not too thick otherwise it will collect too much at the bottom (look for the sweet spot). It sometimes needs multiple coats, but the end result is worth it.
