The battle seems decided from the start, all of the Providence's fighters were on top of the Imperator before the two ships even got in range of each other. Maybe if the ships started well outside each other's ranges and then closed the distance (with their fighters obviously), then the ISD would have easily won.
You’re not wrong about the fighters seeming to start the battle with an advantage for the Providence. Still working on attempting to learn better control of the AI to hopefully keep battles consistent. I have run this particular matchup several times and it seems that while the ISD indeed has superior firepower, it’s lack of PD weapons and low fighter compliment make it hard for it to manage enemy bombers. Most of the outcomes have been a victory for the Providence, but there has been on or two times where the ISD fighters were able to manage the enemy correctly. Keep an eye out for a rematch!
The real issue is that he ordered his fighters and bombers to attack the Providence while the CIS fighters and bombers were already attacking him. By doing so, he ensured that the Republic fighters would NOT attempt to intercept and destroy the enemy fighters/bombers. If he'd ordered them to focus on the small craft while the Destroyer focused on the Providence, they would have been able to wipe out the CIS fighters since the AI was already committed to attacking his Imperator, and therefore wouldn't defend themselves effectively. If the fighter situation had been handled properly, this matchup is actually in favor of the Imperator. The Imperator and the Providence Dreadnought have roughly similar firepower, but the Imperator has stronger shields and more HP, so in a head-to-head slugging match without the fighters as a factor, the Imperator would come out on top more often than not. Particularly when you factor in AI behavior, like how it tends to target the closest enemy ship sub-systems to itself first, walking its fire back as it destroys those systems. The Imperator's heaviest weapon mounts are the furthest from the enemy, while the Providence's heaviest weapons are mounted right up front. Basically with AI choosing the targeting, once the Providence's shields were down, the Imperator would rip its teeth out very quickly, but if the situation was reversed the Providence would mostly take its time pecking away at the Imperator's weaker weapons first, giving the Republic ship more time to hammer on it with its heavy guns.

If the fighters had intercepted the CIS fighters, it would have given the Imperator the shields it needed to overwhelm the Providence. I feel that this matchup deserves a rematch for that reason.
Glory to the Confederacy The Providence is better in design while the imperator had a bad design but made up for it with fire power. Without the fighters it may have been a draw 🤔
The Providence is much stronger than the Venator though. The only reason the Invincible Hand lost in the movies is because it was already heavily damaged and was attempting to retreat before getting pummeled. I think it lost it's escorts too.

Dont asume ONLY because a Venator would EAT a normal providence for breakfast is an ISD able to win against a DREADNOUGHT! Yes, she aint a battlecruiser here, she actualy hit the size of a dreadnought! Providence could RIVAL an Venator in sheer fighter numbers, imagine a 4x larger ship with at LEAST 4x its capacity.... yea poor ISD...
You saw what happened in episode 3, additional to that an isd has much better shields. And wayy more (and better)turets than an venator, basically an ship made for direct ship combat as main purpose unlike the venator.

The SSD having no point defense for the missiles is kind of a big deal too I think.

Pretty sure fall of the Republic has a specific mode for setting up two AI controlled fleets so you don't have to micro one side
