  • Installed a composting toilet!! Come inside my bathroom with me and get all the details! TMI?!?!
I actually filmed this a while back, but the inside part was way too dark. So I had to re-shoot all the inside parts. I just now got around to it. I can't believe I spent 16 minutes talking about a toilet. Where did the time go?
This is the model of composting toilet I bought!
    C-Head Composting Toilet: www.c-head.com/
This is the more expensive, popular brand.

Please let me know if you find this or other videos too long. Or really any other constructive criticism you may have.

I am looking for a Casita but I have had small trailers all my life. To me the dumbest thing ever is hauling around 500lbs of greywater on trips. The composting toilet is the perfect way to go ! Thanks for posting !

I'm with you...having a black tank MUCH worse than a good composting toilet. Then there's the water savings and it's a win-win situation. Thanks for sharing!

"Gone With The Winns" (an RV channel) installed to a composting toilet in their class A RV and loved it. Actually after they sold that and up graded to a newer class A they took it with them and installed it again. Your right! It's much less messy and way more convenient that having a flush toilet and dealing with a black tank. People are stubbern sometimes, often to their own detriment.

Finally, someone who knows how to explain things! I’ve watched half a dozen people do a half-*#$$ job of explaining a composting toilet but now I have about 98% comprehension. The only thing lacking is how to empty the solids and what to do with it. Thanx, Bex!

I use the same brand of toilet and love it. I don't even have it vented and don't empty the gallon bottle as often as you. I have zero problems. I highly recommend them. C-head is the brand and I mention them because I have had such good service with it. The Montana guy.

The composting toilet is not AS GROSS as the effluent hose, which is a monument to stinky gross. Still, people have to use a composting toilet for a while to get really comfortable with it. I used to wrinkle my nose at discussions of composting heads, but eventually, it became the only answer for my year-round RV (frozen tanks do not drain). Now, after using it for a while, it seems very nasty to me to think of people traveling around with a huge tank of sloshing poo juice. YUCK!! Just sayin'. :)

I miss Ranier beer from when I lived in Tacoma back in the 80s......regarding the battery, my 2011 has access from the outside drivers' side. Still a PITA to get out and the battery isn't very light. As for composting, I don't think I'll be getting into that.....have enough dump stations where I live, fortunately. You should post your video on Casita Forum. com or Casita Club forums - i'm sure many would be interested in what you did to your bathroom. Seems like a system to use if you boondock a lot or don't have access to dumpstations/camp grounds.......thanks for doing the Vlogs. Looks like you're experiencing nice, beautiful sights.

+Rick Martin Thanks! I think I will post this video on one of the forums. I know there are some strong opinions, but also people who are interested in extended dry camping. If I had a much bigger tank, I may have not gone this route. But at only 5 gallons, it just wasn't going to cut it.

Rick Martin Hey Rick, I think I saw that someone modified their battery cave a yearly or so when they got their Casita 17' Standard (no bathroom). They had a slide drawer put in when they took the trailer straight from the Casita factory in TX to a machine & wielding shop to have heavy duty scissor jacks attached on all 4 corners and a steel frame around the propane tanks. Thx for reminding me what that last modification they made. I'll have to rewatch that video again to see it demo'd

We have a C-Head in our motorhome, and lived for a year on our boat with a DIY urine diverting composting toilet. For the urine smell, we have a spray bottle that we have a 50/50 mix of vinegar/water. We give the urine diverter a spritz a few times a day and that gets rid of the urine smell.

After watching all the videos about them , for the life of me, I can't see what keeps the bottom end of the churn, the paddle looking thingum from just pushing itself sideways and not functioning properly. Is there a piece coming up through the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket to keep it in line?

Aha- I found it below: C-Head. I'll search for more info. My original toilet was replaced with a new ceramic model in 2015, however it was a 'mismatch' and the freshwater seal has leaked causing under floor damage. Hi bex ,,, i was wondering now that you have had your composting toilet for awhile do you still like it and think it is a good choice.. This is the brand i am thinking on getting.. although I am not sure how i am going to vent it.. do you find it smells at all even in hot weather.. how about bugs have you had any problems with that..i saw on another video that they put pest strips inside and that it actually has been made with a space just for that. Thank you kindly for the video, stay safe and keep enjoying the dream.

    • @BexCatherder
      @BexCatherder  8 лет назад +2

+jcelizabeth Oh, yes! It has worked out wonderfully for me. I haven't had any bad smells come from the composting. Nor have I had any bugs. The only bad smells have come from the urine. It's important to empty the urine everyday. That's one unexpected plus of buying this model. I'm able to throw the cheap plastic container for urine away once or twice a week and put a fresh jug in there. I have also forgotten to empty the jug when I moved camping spots. That was gross to clean up, but the good thing is that everything was contained inside the toilet. So nothing splilled in my bathroom. Also, keep in mind, my original toilet was only a 5 gallon. So I would never have been able to boondock like I have with my composting toilet. I recently spent over a week boondocking in and around the Alabama Hills and it was great not to have to worry about emptying my black water tank.

Hello. I hope you're doin' okay. Posted a few days ago, and would really love to know how this thing is working out for you. I hope it's great. Were you able to combine black and gray tanks for extra gray water space? Seems like a simple solution could be found by maybe capping off the dump valve where the black and gray pipes would meet the stinky slinky hose and providing a small air vent at the top of the black tank. Just wondering how you're doing, and as I said, hoping all is well. Keep up your great videos.

    Hi Bex,
I bought a new fiberglass RV. I want to swap out a new never-used toilet for a C-Head composting toilet like yours. I asked one local RV service about changing out the toilets and I got these responses: "Why do you want to change out a toilet when you have tanks?" then "We do not install parts that we do not purchase." The folks on the other end of the telephone were hostile. I kindly left them a review on "Yelp" about the experience. I do not think the business owner will be too happy about it. However, I called another service and they said that they would be glad to do the swap out.

Thank you for this review!! I just bought a c-head toilet for my 13" scamp. How is the toilet attached to the floor so it does not move when you're on the road?

+Sat Gurprasad Kaur Khalsa There are two rubber clips that are mounted to the floor on either side. These then just clip onto the toilet to hold it in place.

Did it cost anything to camp in that spot? It's alot more bulk, but spagum peat moss works really good and IS very cheap

Nice setup. I would put a grey water tank where the black water one was so you wouldn't have to drain your sink on the ground anymore.

You don't have to put your paper in the compost. A small trash bin with a cover is all you need. Line it with one of those plastic grocery store bags and once a week or so all you have to do is pull it out tie the handles together and throw it out with your kitchen or other trash. I've lived some 15 years on a sailboat and it is not good to flush your paper in to the water, so that is what ALL live aboard boaters do.

Hi Bex, really enjoy your videos. I'm thinking of getting a C-Head. Now that you've had it for a while what are your thoughts on it with more experience? Are you still happy with it? Have you had any issues with flies or smells. Is it holding up mechanically?

I love it!! I did have flies once. I parked at my parents and left it unattended for a couple of weeks and I got some flies. I just went up to the mountains and emptied it and started over and all is good. For me, this is the way to go. :-)

I put a composting toilet in my Casita too, and like it way more!!! I still have to empty my grey water tank, but it's much less gross than the black one! :-)

C-Head seems to have gone out of business. I ordered one with payment up front, as required, and I've been ghosted along with many other customers. The site is down, email gets bounced, etc., so I'm out of luck. Glad you got yours!

Two questions.....can you recycle the plastic urine bottle? Also eventually you have to empty the poo part . ...so where do you empty it ?

Hi. Thanks for posting this interesting video. We're considering buying a Casita and this looks like a great alternative to the nasty black tank flushing. I'm thinking the black tank could be plumbed to become additional gray water space. Quick question, even though I'm male. I heard (on another internet place about this toilet) that females might experience a slight learning curve in positioning themselves just right so liquids are kept separate from solids. Is that right? If so, is it difficult to get used to using this toilet? Is it comfortable to sit on? I also heard that you have to remove TP (using chopsticks, maybe?) and place used TP in a separate container like a small trash container (with an air tight lid) with a plastic bag lining it. Is that right? I don't want this thing to be a hassle for my wife or me, but even with the differences from a conventional toilet, it looks like a superior method. Preparing the composting material and disposing of it seems easier than handling that "stinky -slinky". I am reminded of a scene from the movie "RV", and another from the movie "Christmas Vacation". Ha! Would really appreciate your thoughts, now that you've used yours for several months. I have enjoyed watching all of your videos.

Hi! Thanks for watching! Yes, you have to sit just right to ensure that "stuff" goes where you want it, however, it's not very difficult. The seat is just a regular toilet seat so it's as comfortable as a regular toilet. I put a little bit of toilet paper in the bin, however, it does not break down and compost as quickly. So I use much less toilet paper and use wet wipes. I do not put the wet wipes in there. I place them in the trash.
