    I guess i look at it differently, I see the X cast as a companion device for the ninja v that most professional videographers already have. If I need the ISO’s i can build it in premiere by recording in camera. I am a video producer that sometimes streams, not a streamer that sometimes takes video.

    For ISO recording, we can record it on cameras. The reason for Atom X Cast is we can pair/use it with the Atomos Ninja V or V+ monitor. For me, I choose the Atomos Ninja V+ since I need a good and compact professional monitor and a great video recorder for my camera and I can use it as a switcher if I need to. ATEM is a nice unit too. Just buy the one that fit your need.

      Do you know if the Ninja V can record 4K internally from one video source (not on a camera but on itself) independently from the USB-C 1080p outputs on the AtomX Cast? Thanks

    It’s a shame you can’t get a 4k mix from the atom x cast if you are using four cameras say and vision mixing. You only get an HD mix, not good enough really. What would be great would be the Atom X cast size, that can record x4 HDMI feeds at 4K pro res, that’s all I want. I didn’t buy the ATEM because you only get .H264 files and they are sadly compressed, it’s a shame because pro res gives you more flexibility in post and I think all filmmakers would be happier always shooting in pro res than that compressed version. If RUclips quality is good enough for you then get the ATEM

    I could use an update on the cast now that it has a app to control it. I have a ninja v and just bought a cast for $135.

    ATOM X Cast allow you overlay with no chroma key or green screen
    BMD does not have that

    I have the atomx cast and I use it for live streaming as a video switcher in streamlabs obs I also use it on location for real-time switching for my client project's. So far it has been a very good system 👌 4 cameras audio from the rode casterpro. As always very good insight in your videos

      Thanks for sharing your views. What made you choose the ATOMX Cast vs the ATEM Mini at the time?
      Do you miss some features the ATEM could give you?
      Or is the "all in one bundle" aspect the one thing for you?

    It's so weird how he just sold the AtomX cast. LOL. I'm picking one soon. Great video Chris. Thanks.

    For my testing, the limitation of the ATEM Pro ISO is the recoding/export codec. The limitation of the ATOM X Cast, f is that it does not recognize bmcc HDMI output @ 24fps. The fps must be 25p or greater. The Ninja V+ can read the Bmpcc 24fps, when not docked to the AtomX Cast. The Ninja/AtomX Cast combo allows recoding in ProRes, avid, H.264 and for future proofing provides ProRes Raw for cameras that can output Raw HDMI sensor data. The portable screen on the Atom X Cast is very well placed, provides great utility, and allows for a multi camera view, as well as PIP. The price now, on special at Adorama is $799 for the X Cast and Ninja v+ bundle. The Ninja 5/Atom X Cast bundle is $595.00. The price of the Ninja V combo is compelling. For the use case of ISO recordings, one can capture each camera angle as a backup by utilizing in-camera recording. The use case for leading to procuring a multi-cam recording set-up, in my case, was eliminating having to edit footage in post, while obtaining a switched multi-cam output.

      I will actually also record a new video about these two since I now used both as well. There are compelling reasons to go with both (depending on your needs). So it's not an easy decision 🙈.

      I will think about this idea. General suggestion:
      You should get a USB-C to HDMI adapter / dock (ideal with a dock is that you can charge at the same time). Then you have the HDMI output and buy an additional USB HDMI Capture card which will capture the HDMI signal and make it available in OBS.

    I’m looking into picking up a Atomos Ninja V, can you tell me the file sizes you are getting at 4k60 ProRes vs H.265?. The Ninja V looks very promising, but they only have a 2TB drive and I feel like it would fill up in a hour or 2 of recording… We usually record for 4-6 hours.

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад +2

      The great thing for the Ninja V is that you can buy just about any SSD drive and put it into the caddy. So, in theory, you could put in a 8TB SSD 🙈.
      At this time I do not have a camera capable of outputting 4k at 60 fps… however, I have tested 4k24fps and the result was:
      H.264 ALL-I at a bitrate of 480 Mbit/s: 41 GB / Hour
      H.264 IPB at a bitrate of 160 Mbit/s: 14 GB / Hour
      ProRes 422 LT: 144 GB / Hour
      ProRes 422: 169 GB / Hour
      ProRes 422 HQ: 246 GB / Hour
      To get the numbers for 60 fps you can pretty much do those * 2.5:
      ProRes 422 LT: 360 GB / Hour
      ProRes 422: 423 GB / Hour
      ProRes 422 HQ: 615 GB / Hour
      I personally only use ProRes 422 LT and so I would say that for a 6 hour recording you'd need approximately: 2.200 GB
      Which would lead me to buy a 4 TB Samsung 870 EVO SATA 2.5" SSD and put it into the Atomos Ninja V Caddy.
      Note that there is a similarly named "Samsung QVO" which is not recommended for enduring write operations.
      I hope this was helpful and that it works out for you.

    Hey Chris, thank you for the video! I have a simple question: do you have any "humming" noise in the ATEM Mini Pro ISO? I've tested already 2 of ATEM Mini Pro and both has such a noise, probably from the fan. It is not like a wind, but like a fine electric motor in use. Anyway, if my computer is on, I can hear it relatively quietly, but in a silent room, especially at the night sounds, like a "mini" minibar in a hotel room. I've done some recording with the ATEM Mini Pro+Focusrite Scarlett 8i6+Sennheiser MK4 combo and it is also by low gain clearly audible. Some people have this problem, but not really published in a big way. Do you have any thoughts about?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад +1

      I am not 100% which noise you are talking about. In general: the ATEM Mini line does have a fan built in and thus there will be a motor running and that is normal to make some noise.
      If you are talking about noise on the audio channel: I do not have this issue in my current setup, but depending on the way you link things together it can happen that you get some static into your mic input. In that case it is best to test which cable connection is the culprit and then adjust accordingly.

    • @csabagrunfelder
      @csabagrunfelder 2 года назад

      @@ChrisSpiegl Hello Chris,
      thank you for your quick answer. Yes, I think it is this motor noise, what I mean. I find the audio through Mic 1 and 2 superb! I make videos with a Sony a7 III and a6000, audio is coming from Focusrite 8i6 3rd gen. I‘ve tried it Focusrite->Sony->through HDMI to ATEM, and Focusrite directly to ATEM. Both version are very good in my opinion, I need extremely low gain for my Sennheiser MK4 and Samson C02 also. I will find a workout, this tiny noise to avoid. Thanks!

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад +1

      @@csabagrunfelder Usually whatever you are streaming should be loud enough to cover the fan noise of the ATEM. Or put it a bit farther away if that's an option.

      @@ChrisSpiegl Hey Chris, one more simple question 😀 When I connect e.G. the Feelworld T7 to ATEM Mini Pro/Pro ISO, can I audio monitoring the ATEM through the display jack output?

    • @ChrisSpiegl
      @ChrisSpiegl  2 года назад

      Let's hope that is true - with the Ninja V+ it should be capable of doing 4k ISO recordings with up to 4 streams.

  • @eric-janvandenbogaard9415
    @eric-janvandenbogaard9415 Год назад

    The compairishment is not good ! there's a big difference between these 2 switchers because of that, for live switching the combination of Ninja V and X cast is perfect, you can connect a program out monitor, and a monitor for multiview at the same time, and stream externally via USB-C, or use the Ninja V for multivieuw and stream externally via a HDMI output, to record all HDMI inputs one needs lots of storage space, which is only needed in post production, for non live purpouse.
    Money should not be a liimit if you really want do something serious.
    The different Atem models make it only hard, to setup something when you are starting in this "field" with Blackmagic Design one should also keep everything up to date, when using it on a MAC OS and look out for Intel or M1/M2 compatibility and correct drivers 32/64 bit.
    There is no such thing as "better" it all depends on use case scenario, maybe one should have both.
    btw. picture in picture and logo overlay is also possible with the X cast.
