I believe this video greatly shows that how much better a series or character can be if you actually give them your full attention and don't just sit by like watching a football game.
If you try to relate to them, and if you ask yourself why they do what they do, you can really see so much there that you didn't see before. I also have to point out what a difference in effort and skill this video has editing wise than most of Jaymes' videos, well done on that.
As Bleach was the first series I got into, it really is interesting to see a lot of perspectives from a standpoint of hard and long thought observation, and how I find myself feeling even more appealed to the character than before.
    Well done Jaymes

I think the bigger problem when it comes to shounen in general is that most people watched these shows when they were a kid. And for some weird reason they also judge them from the mindset of a kid. Like as a kid they were into cool fights and badass characters so now when they looks at these characters they think thats all there is. Refusing to spare these stories a second thought and just cling to their past opinions.

  • @awsom98

I always liked how Ichigo doesn't have some cliche goal of being #1 at something (ironic considering his theme song lol). A lot of people, myself included, struggle to find their goal and meaning in life at around ichigos age (high school - college age). I think ichigo is a much more relatable character than people give him credit for because he acts like a regular teenager and doesn't really have any fantastical goals like being "#1" or being a president/world leader, ie Naruto. Despite all his fantastical powers, he's a believable character with strengths and flaws and is trying to get through life, and he doesn't have grandiose dreams/goals similar to luffy or Naruto. I get the appeal to Naruto and Luffy and I'm not trying to belittle them; my point is that I personally find ichigo to be more relatable in comparison to other shonen protagonists.

bleach has that element that i love so much which is the abstract "monster" personified and inner battles made more physical (rather than metaphysical). but its never about defeating the monster so much as it is about accepting and incorporating it into yourself. once you do, you become something new. kant theorized that there are two aspects of a person at war with each other and the battle ends when one of them wins, but in hegel's mind, the battle doesn't end with one victor. it ends with the synthesis of the two, creating something entirely new. a lot of stories follow this pattern of presenting a thesis, antithesis, then a synthesis (and this reflects the typical three act structure of many stories). the characters go on this same journey internally while the story goes on this journey externally. it's what made me like bleach so much; it wasn't just about fighting monsters. it was about a boy learning about who he is and accepting himself (even the "bad parts") and growing up, changing into something new.

“I’m going to bring you along to the next best thing. After all, the target to be captured this time, was a substitute Shinigami same as that Kurosaki Ichigo… a man who lost his life by suffering a defeat at the hands of Kurosaki Ichigo.”
Hearing those words, Dordoni’s facial expression became tense.
“Woah… he actually killed a fellow human being rather than a Hollow like us, has he cast aside that innocent nature of his? If that’s the case, I suppose I can’t call him ‘niño’ anymore.”
An extract from the CFYOW II novel. Dordoni basically acknowledges that Ichigo has overcome his naivete and is able to kill now, something he couldn't do at the time of their fight.

Old comment but I have to agree. Really that is why I always come back to bleach he's fleshed out enough to feel like a real person. I also prefer anime that are drawn more like real people. I like the sharp edges of bleach. Full metal alchemist is another anime that I always go back to. The Elric brothers feel like people you would run into in your real life. Bleach is amazing because the plot isn't spoon fed to the watcher which leaves room for theorizing and speculation long after It's over.

Not long ago you were pretty upset but you found yourself again and decided you wanted to push yourself to create better content which by the way your content in my opinion was always great, but in the sense your character has shown a lot of growth as well and you should be proud of that but make sure you're doing it for the right reasons for yourself because that's all that really matters man. I wished you talked more about Rukia and how she enables Ichigo's development, at least some of Ichigo's other friends too, besides that bit on Orihime. Or about Ichigo's rebellion against authority and how that extends far past the Soul Society arc. You talked about Ichigo reading his opponent's thoughts and feelings but you never elaborated on what he read from Aizen: a fear of becoming so powerful he'd become without equal, and truly alone, which is what Ichigo theorized to be why Aizen accepted his defeat and allowed himself to be sealed away. It's important to Ichigo's growth and explains his sorrow at Aizen's defeat. It also leans into the theme of loneliness that you never mentioned, despite being a key part of Bleach's story.

“If you have to explain it, then it’s shit writing.” That’s the biggest bs I’ve ever hear. Good stories are not supposed to be straightforward. Good stories are stories that people need to look into and try their best to figure out what the writers are trying to say. Many of the best literature that ever existed needed explanations to figure out the main idea of a story. That’s what makes up an amazing story.

Today, is a cliche to have a protagonist in a shounen manga that have a goal, it worked back then in Naruto or One Piece but now in shows like My Hero Academia and Black Clover, its exhausting to have the same type of main character.
Looking back to Bleach, seeing Ichigo is kind of refreshing since he doesn’t have this problem and for me, it’s more powerful that he does what he does simply because it’s the right thing to do, that’s why I like about characters like Superman in the comics, he knows that he have a responsability and that’s it, right and simple.
I like Ichigo’s personality, he is likeable and charismatic, and you can relate and connect to him quickly.

Ichigo to me is one of the few real-life characters in the shonen universe like Yusuke Urameshi (YuYu Hakusho) or Yuji Itadori (Jujutsu Kaisen). All of them are typical highschool boys, normal guys living normal ordinary lives just like many young boys in the real world, then something supernatural of spirit-like theme ocurrs introducing them to a very great world unknown to them and they have to ajust and adapt to this new changes in their lives while dealing with finding the balance. No need for a pre-determinated plot or objective to make the protagonist to advance like Naruto or Luffy. Very excellent video well made.

A truly great video James , kubo's use of subtlety in the characters monologue and expressions to show their growth and development is one of beach's strong points. The growth of ichigo comes full circle in the final fight. Let's hope the anime will return and Kubo will get the chance to tell and end the story the way he wanted. Since the ending was rushed with unresolved plots and motives cough cough aizen cough. The novels are living proof of all the things that Kubo wanted to do in the last arc but couldn't due to his health issues. But great video and I hope you make more of these for other characters as well.

I blame Goku for this but I swear that the majority of leads in shonen series are short bus levels of stupid. If they aren't dumb then they will be God level of brilliance. This becomes extra insulting when you think about the fact that in marketing these characters are supposed to be the ones we relate too. So what? The writers think that we can only relate to a moron because we're morons too? Or need to compare ourselves to a genius just to stroke our own ego? This is why I love Ichigo, he's pretty smart over all, but still makes mistakes when it comes to life and his decisions, something that we can all relate too and inspire to be without it being insulting.

Goku is a PERFECT CHARACTER!!!!!but I can see where you're coming from so what do what do you want every shounen protagonist to like light yagami from death note

I knew it was going to be good but THIS good? Jaymes, this is without a doubt the best video I've seen in ages. Happy to see you debunk many dumb myths (at this point) about Kurosaki-kun.
Also, I absolutely loved the analogy behind Inoue/Tsukishima/Yhwach in the final arc because from many comments in various places I realized a lot of people don't get that.
Endless love from me and I hope this video really helps you push forward.
The 50k milestone is really close too!!
P.S. I hope we can see you upload more now!

I loved your video!! I really liked the way you explained not only his character development, but the amount of understanding you had of the author's intention behind all the words and actions he took throughout the series. The fact that everything that he wrote and created had a purpose and stood to mean something. I always knew that bleach was a series that hold a lot of deep meaning, but wasn't really appreciated. I'm glad that you were able to channel through some of those meanings, because bleach is more than just battles, it has deep meanings and of course it is poetic.

I don't know how people can think ichigos powers are an ass pull, when it's foreshadowed that he has quincy, hollow, and shinigami powers as early as the first arc. People claim kubo sucks at world building, but if you pay attention he does a lot of things very well, but he has a different style of storytelling from oda, kishimodo, or toriyama that some people just don't understand.

Ichigo is much more matured than Naruto and Luffy given his age if I am correct. Naruto also becomes matured in shippuden so both are great!.
Also, narutos goal was justified given how much he suffers, but ichigo had a comfortable childhood until his mom's death so you can't expect a goal for him.
So in total, I think atleast ichigo and Naruto both have justifiable goals in their own situation so no need to compare them. Bith are marvelous given their stories and world building.
Both have philosophical themes that are marvelous S rank and above shonen tropes and that's why these two are in big 3.
