  • What is the sign of Jonah?
In this devotional, I share three thoughts from Matthew 12:38-42.
    1. Three days.
    2. Greater than Jonah.
    3. Greater than Solomon.
These thoughts come from assigned reading - Matthew 11-13. If you would like to read through the Bible with me you can do so by joining the Facebook group Through the Bible.

      John 3:14-21 NIV
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

Matthew 12:40 "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." ------- I am curious to know
    (1) Who mentioned as "Son of Man"??
    (2) If Jesus described himself as "Son of Man", why do Christians tell him "Son of God"??
    (3) If Jesus described someone other as "Son of Man", who is he and how the prophecy had been completed??

The pharisees hated Jesus because of His influence on the people. They were looking for any way to get rid of Him . If Jesus said He was the Son of God, they would accuse Him of blasphemy and kill Him yet His time had not yet arrived and His mission was not complete. (This is the main reason in my opinion but there are many other reasons He called Himself Son of man)

Jonah preached to the Ninevites, yet 40 days and Ninevah shall be overturned.
Jesus's death was sometime between 28 and 33 AD. If He proclaimed the message about the sign of Jonah in 30AD, then 40 years later, a "day for a year" as it says in Ezekiel, Jerusalem was destroyed, in 70 AD. Because they didn't repent.
Ninevah was such a large city that it took 3 days to go through the city, and Jesus preached for 3 years.

Jesus uses Jonah’s experience to explain the greatest sign he would perform for the people of Israel - the resurrection.

What the scriptures are saying is that the Jews had among them Jesus Christ-a prophet much greater than Jonah. Though Jonah was an adequate sign to the Ninevites, Jesus preached with far more authority and supporting proof than that prophet did. Yet, the Jews in general didn’t believe.-John 4:48

What Jesus (pbuh) meant is,his miracles are like Jonah. When Jonah was thrown in the sea,he is alive. When the fish swallow him,he is still alive. When Jonah was on shore,he is still alive. That means,Jesus (pbuh) he never died,he is still alive. He did not die,but God raise him up to the heavens, and did not die. The same miracle like Jonah. Alive, alive and alive.

When will the Son of Man spend those 3 days and 3 nights in the Earth?
Jesus spent 36 hours. But not "3 days and 3 nights."
Friday sunset to Sunday sunrise is 36 hours. Not 3 days.

    • @amyw4125

Good Friday is a lie. Roman Catholics came up with that tradition. Jesus died on Wednesday afternoon and was placed in the grave right before sunset on Wednesday. The Hebrew days go from sundown to sundown. Read Genesis 1. There was night then there was day. So he was in the grave Wednesday night to Thursday night. 1 night and one day. From Thursday night to Friday night. Second day and night. Then Friday night to Saturday night which would be the third day and night. He rose after sunset on Saturday which is technically the start of the 1st day of the week in Hebrew. The discovered the grave empty when it was at the top of the morning so he rose before the sun came up. I hope this makes since. I wish I could post my picture that I have showing this in a visual.

@@amyw4125 okay let's just agree your version of the days for argument sake
When jonah was thrown into the sea he was 'alive' when the fishe gobbled him and swallowed him he was 'alive' and those 3 days and 3 days which he spent in the belly of the huge fish he was 'alive' and lastly when he was spit on the land he was 'alive' there was no version that jonah died but you here claim jesus died the prophecy does not add up and someone lied and it ain't jesus.
