The ones that always get me are surprise left-only lanes!
Especially when the only signage is painted on the floor so you only see it when you get to the front and it’s too late.

    • @notmenotme614
      @notmenotme614 2 года назад +1

It’s not even 5 minutes later. As it’s inevitable you’ll have to stop for several red traffic lights. The only thing bad drivers do is get to the same red traffic light a few seconds earlier and wait just as long as everyone else.
Bad drivers dot have the intelligence to realise this. They really don’t shave off much time from their journey if there’s a lot of traffic congestion.

So glad to hear a learner who already understands that roundabouts can be used to safely fix the problem of being in the wrong lane. So many full license holders don't even think about doing this, and cut across multiple lanes dangerously instead.

    • @Lioness99a
      @Lioness99a 2 года назад +8

It's so silly because roundabouts are the easiest ones to deal with mistakes on, purely because you can just go round and round them! I was once driving and a friend was navigating but he didn't know which exit we needed so I just drove around the roundabout until he had figured it out (ended up being one and a half circles of it!) - caused no issues to the other road users

Very good advise, if you can't get into the correct lane then just go where the lane is taking you and find somewhere to turn around. On my driving test I had a similar scenario, I was unintentionally in the wrong lane and missed my turning as a result. The examiner just said "Okay, not to worry. Just take the next turning on the right and come round again". So was all fine and I passed

Same here - I was doing the follow the signs portion in my test and the sign showed that I needed the first exit from a roundabout. There was an awkward junction just before the roundabout that looked to me to be the first exit so I took it and the examiner just fixed my mistake by giving me a direction at the end of the road to get back onto the signed route I was meant to be on and didn't mark me down at all - everything I did was done safely, I just misread the sign and the road layout

I love your videos Ashley, thank you. I'm an instructor (although on trains, not cars - same but without dual controls), different vehicles but the actual instructing is the similar. I love the way you explain situations and try to give the learner a sense of the greater situation, rather than just focusing on what they are doing themselves. The "what if this happened, what would you do?" or the "if they had come in to this lane, where would we be and what would you do?" scenarios really help to cement the idea in to their minds that they're not the only person on the road and that they are the only ones responsible for their own safety on the road, so it's up to them to keep it that way. It's similar to what we do and it's great to see someone like yourself helping the drivers of tomorrow to be safe and alert.

You seem like a great instructor, Ashley! Perfectly paced and informative delivery with enough actual teaching too by letting the pupil figure out the answer instead of just dictating to her. My instructor was like this and I always remember him saying that if you find you're in the wrong lane you usually just have to take the lane you've committed too instead of suddenly switching to the one you wanted, because that could be dangerous, and once you turn safely into the road your lane took you down you can look for a way to change course.
I've actually had this happen on a complicated roundabout in Manchester where I wanted to go straight but found I'd accidentally committed to the left exit which was the motorway sliproad!! So I was forced to drive 15 minutes on the motorway well away from my destination until the next exit to take the backroads back the way I came hahaha! I've never made that mistake on that roundabout since though and it's a local one.

Good general principle. Avoid trying to turn off if unsure or it is unsafe. Can always turn around in a side street or next roundabout. Especially true on motorway branches or exits. Last-minute decisions to get off can be a danger. Also, be especially aware if you are running late, and make a point not to take extra risks because of it. Being late increases danger unless you are conscious of this. Plan ahead to avoid being late too.

If I get in the wrong lane I carry on and just find a good place to get turned around and come back to where I want to be, I always add some extra time if I am going somewhere for an appointment just in case rather than bullying through cause I haven't got time, my brother is the opposite to me, he is always late and will speed and cut people up on roundabouts as he habitually ends up in the wrong lane on roundabouts, he tends to ignore the instructions from his sat nav until he gets in the wrong lane or even goes the wrong way.

This is why i usually have my GPS going even if i know the way. Not only does it give you warnings about things happening up the road, but if you cannot go down the road you know (road is closed or you got in the wrong lane for whatever reason), you can just focus on the road ahead of you and let the GPS workout which way to go, rather than you being focused on which way to go to get back to the road you know.
And i've had a lot of situations when i found myself in the wrong lane. If i can switch lanes and get back to where i need to, that's great. If not, just go with it. Enjoy the sights while your GPS takes you back.

The traffic was heavy, so getting across to the left wasn't an option, and going around meant I could essentailly jump the cue and got there a bit quicker. I once encountered a situation where there was a car with motor issues in the left turn lane (the wide turn as we drive on the right in the Netherlands).
There was one car in front of the stopped car and we were in the lane next to it and wanted to also turn left.
My friend who drove was uncertain what to do in this case, as our current lane didn't go left.
We planned out was to wait for the left traffic light, let the other car go first and then follow as other left-turning traffic would be blocked by the stopped car.

Beautifully and calmly handled, that one. Reminds me of that time in Oslo, while approaching what is pretty much the city's biggest traffic machine, in dense traffic. I'd miscalculated traffic, and there was simply no way of getting into the lane I needed - it was completely full. Trying to hope that someone would let me in would have caused traffic to pile up behind me, so I just aborted the entire move and ended up going somewhere completely different for a little while, before I found my way back. But all in all, that's far more preferable than causing mayhem just because you're stuck on the idea of following your original plan.

I've just stumbled across your videos and watched a few of them - fab content for road safety awareness!
I don't know if it's something you've already posted about, however as a driver and a horse rider, can I make a request for videos on passing horses and riders on the road? I regularly ride out on roads around the village where I stable my horse, and I am very lucky to have what is called a 'bombproof' horse in that she's typically not spooky or silly on the roads, doesn't react negatively to most things and is about as safe to ride as a horse can be. It makes my job of keeping everyone safe much easier. Not all horses are bombproof and even those that are can still be unpredictable. I always wear hi viz when on the roads and put a hi viz sheet on my horse so we're easily visible to other road users. Most drivers in my area fortunately are considerate and will pass slow and wide, however some people either don't know or don't care how they pass. I know far too many horror stories of horse vs car on the roads.
When a horse rider uses the slow down signal to drivers we're not just trying to protect ourselves and our horse. We're actually trying to protect the car and its occupants too!
Horses are flight animals and can weigh upwards of half a tonne. They can travel at speeds of 20-30mph. My horse is a retired racehorse so she's bred and built for speed. Many also wear metal shoes. Imagine the amount of damage that can cause to a car if you don't treat us with a little respect.
I'd love to see your take on this. Horse vs car is sadly a very common type of rtc and kills and injures horses and riders. Horses aren't just pets. They are part of our family. They are expensive and we do everything we can to keep our heart and soul safe. Our horses trust us with their lives when we ask them to go out just as we trust our lives completely to them.
From my perspective, I ask anyone on the road who sees a horse and rider if their hi viz says please pass slow and wide, thus is a request to do so and not a challenge to be as close and fast as possible. If we ask you to slow down or stop it's for everyone's safety and we're not trying to annoy anyone.
I think you could help so many horse owners and educate so many other road users from your platform!

When Ashley said "is that Bus slowing down", it gave the driver the ok to change lanes and speed up, but it was clear that she was heading to an issue if any of the 3 cars she was going to pass on the left would also try to move out. As it happened one did, but the silver car directly behind the bus also pulled out abruptly and very late in front of her without indicating. She is not the most observant driver and it showed when she had to go around the previous roundabout, not knowing the exit but driving too fast and cars pulling out in front of her. In the case of the bus lane change the advice should have been, "change lanes, but ease back and watch those cars just behind it".

This should early teaching for everyone, drive the car to the plan or markings. I don't know how that's difficult but the number of times we see people put their "entitlement" indicators on and just sit there waiting to pull across traffic so that they don't even so much as have to go all the way round a roundabout. Or worse, they don't indicate until they're about to cut someone up to correct their positioning in case someone gets a clue that they're about to do it.

Hiya, thank you for the video and also all the past videos you have done. I've passed my test last month and been driving around but still watching the videos.
Can I ask what may be a stupid question. When your learner turned right it looks It turned into three lanes and that she had enough time to choose and stay in the middle lane which would of allowed her to take the exit you wanted (left lane to turn left 1st exit and middle for straight on the roundabout 2nd exit). Was it because it would of been too risky to go to the middle lane with the cars behind you as they seemed pretty far behind on the cam a little bit after the turn. Though I'm aware things look further and slower in the cams than in real life and she is learning so maybe a more experienced driver would of been able to quickly lane change and do so safely?
Also it seems like those lane markings before the roundabout aren't the clearest per say as both the middle and right lane have a straight ahead. I feel like the right lane should of had a right arrow at least. Though maybe it was shown on the roundabout sign

  • @cloudmaker

Have used the roundabout to turn left scenario for many years where there has been a lot of traffic to go left and the right lane is fairly clear, I simply go around then you can take that exit. Works most times and it is better way than most drivers who will use the clear lane and force their way into the exit from the inside of the roundabout. Better meaning non aggressive and less triggering.

This is an awkward situation even for experienced drivers & an excellent way to teach an inexperienced/learner driver. For me, I'd indicate left after clearing the junction & be looking over my shoulder/using ns mirror for a gap or a courteous driver. If that failed then leave enough road to execute option b to go around the roundabout. Appreciate that is very hard to teach though & the go-around option is safer overall.

Had a very similar problem on my test; was in the right lane (which was right turn only) approaching a roundabout when the examiner had asked me to go straight ahead. Had a lorry to my left so although I was checking the mirrors there was no real chance for me to get across. Solution was easy - signalled right, went all the way around and off at the exit he'd asked me to use originally.
I still do the same now if I find myself in the same position - a roundabout is after all the perfect way of ending up back where you started. If only a few more idiots would realise that instead of cutting everyone up!

  • @iKaGe01

I had to do that today haha. I went into the second lane as too many cars were in the left and had to go around to go straight on at the round about.
    Easily fixed.
I agree on the whole accelerating to fix the problem as I've had cars attempt to get there first which is an accident waiting to happen

Whenever I go somewhere new this always happens. Say I’m in the right lane at a roundabout taking the third exit I take the exit and I don’t realise I need Lane 2 for the next junction/roundabout. There’s a ton of cars blocking road markings and making it difficult for me to change if I wanted to. UK road layouts feel so random sometimes, left Lane going left AND straight and sometimes only going left for example.

Hey Ash, cannot wait for your video on the new highway code rules. I am sure you are doing one. Take your time to make it a quality one, no need to rush. The rules seem very sensible. It's a shame they did not appear to include learners though who should also feature in the hierarchy above cars, that would have been good, opportunity missed there. But the additions are good. Would love your thoughts explaining them and why needed, and the possible legal implications if cases go to court. I would like clarification on the cyclist priority at junctions. Does this mean cyclists can now take a primary position at junctions and not have cars telling them they should move to one side to let the cars come up from behind and beat them away from the junction? Would love if you could get example videos from real-life showing where these new rules would have helped. I think also they just make motorists think more about peds and cyclists and what they face. Esp. as a cyclist for when it is not safe to overtake. I think more motorists will get less angry now when I take primary as they will understand more. I am not sure the press will explain this properly though so it gets through to enough drivers. Maybe you could even consider doing a piece for it to be published in a popular tabloid? Complete with diagrams explaining why the new rules were needed? It would bring people to the channel and improve safety a lot. Keep up the good work!

Ashley, what’s your views on using a roundabout to “skip” traffic, for example if you are going left at the roundabout but it’s queued up then going down the right hand lane then go all the way around to then take the road that was at first on your left.
I do this quite often but it doesn’t feel right at times even though I am doing nothing wrong, it’s feels ok on large roundabouts but on smaller ones not so much (I don’t mean mini roundabouts as i know it’s advised to avoid turning around on them)

What really bugs me here is that Ashley tells her to go completely around the roundabout, so she tries to exit on the road she came on. But then Ashley says cancel the signal at the last minute, and then covers it saying "I didn't actually tell which exit." That's actually quite dangerous on the middle of a roundabout. You should always know which exit you plan to leave on before you enter the roundabout.

A good solution to a problem. Rather than making it everyone's (around), just go an extra stretch and fix it yourself.
We have single lane roundabouts here, overseas, with a few exceptions. I happened to be stuck in a multi-lane where that lane was going out an exit earlier. I did not force others to take risks just because I wanted to exit earlier. Went out where the lane took me, took a turn, did a 'Y', entered the same roundabout and left at the first exit. 0.1 liters of petrol (probably less), just to not be an annoyance.
Remember, clever drivers find clever ways to deal with these matters in ways that do not raise concerns in others.

...depends on how long is the line in both lanes and when i can't change lanes due to RoR. Honestly it's a bit wonky to not have a vertical sign for lane trajectories, since local authorities should know that that road gets busy during certain hours..
