  • Leslie and Martha go through each layer needed for an arctic or alpine summer adventure (hiking, biking, paddling (not including wetsuits/drysuits) where it's possible to experience 3-4 seasons in a single day. The basic layering system of baselayer, mid layer, outer layer applies plus a hat, mitts or gloves and something for your neck.
A tried and true simple layering formula when planning what to pack is to make sure you have at least "one of":
Baselayer (this includes shorts and t-shirts for hot days)
    100 gsm weigh light mid-layer
    200 gsm weight heavier mid-layer
300 gsm weight heaviest mid-layer (generally only needed for fall winter extreme cold)
    Weatherproof outer layer
We have written a blog on this topic too. You can find it here: discoveryfabrics.com/blogs/th...

Speaking of hats, looking for a good hat for sun protection, but need it to handle head sweating. My hair gets soaked. For context, I live in Florida, so hot and humid most of the year.

Great question and a tough one, too! Are you in our Facebook Group, Sew Inspired by Discovery Fabrics? I think this is an excellent question to throw out to our collective mind as it may generate answers from other customers that live in similar conditions and have made hats with some of our fabrics. Off the top of my head, I'm wondering if you could make a hat with our Stretch Woven fabric style called Sun Pro. It's on our Stretch Woven page and is a very lightweight stretch woven with a UPF rating of 50+. I think it could make a bucket style or baseball style cap.
