MTM's engineer Dan Lindfors starts up the first production SD45 made by EMD.
GN 400 was built in May 1966. At 3,600 horsepower, it was given the nickname "Hustle Muscle" (the only locomotive to get this name).
400 was retired from the BN (as #6430) in 1986. It was donated to GNRHS and restored in 1989, and later, 2006.
It resided in St. Paul, MN at the former GN roundhouse. During the summers of 2015 and 2016, it operated alongside cousin SDP40 #325 on the Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway.
Temperatures on this day of filming were in the low 30s, and 400, like 325, are a little smokey when they start in cold temps.
**UPDATE** As of April 2019, Hustle Muscle received an overhauled SD45-2 20-645E and is again in operating condition after her original 20-645E was damaged from a crankshaft failure in 2017.***

I had the chance to operate this engine twice between Denver and Pueblo on the Joint Line.If I recall, these ex GN engines were only 368,000 lbs.Real lite for a 6 Axle engine.Constant wheel slip light flickering, then, wheel slide light flickering while in dynamic braking down from Palmer Lake. They might have been flat land screamers, but mountain goats they were not.

Up until her crankshaft incident, the 400 would wheel slip with only a half-dozen passenger cars on 0.7% grade, she wanted to take off really fast.

Interesting point was that when introduced, these locomotives were tested on the Northern Pacific. NP was _not_ impressed. They slipped and slid all over Stampede Pass. GE U28Cs could outpull them handily. This was due to the GE's having wheelslip control on each axle, whereas EMD cheapened out an did whole truck wheelslip. NP told EMD to take their sliders back or do what GE was doing. EMD first refused, then realized they couldn't afford to lose a valuable customer. Finally, they adopted a per-axle wheelslip system, and NP crews loved the SD45 thereafter, terming them "bearcats".

“Her original 20-645 damaged by crankshaft failure 2017”
That’s why the 20 cylinder engines were known as “The Whip”. The crankshafts were too long, and one reason why EMD introduced the 16-710 to get more power.

One silver lining is it demonstrates how/why the railroads have evolved their horsepower needs.

    • @TheSilverShadow17

Or that EMD didn't reinforce the crankshaft for this intensive high strain application, because engines of this size and caliber do tend to break things without anyone's notice.
