  • 20 Cylinder SD45's and 45-2's tackle the heavy grade of Bozeman Pass as mid-train helpers for Montana Rail Link. We visited Livingston, Montana in January of 2011 for the sole purpose of capturing these classic EMD road engines along with their SD40-2 brethren working hard on the 1.8% grade.
Crank up the volume and experience the thunder of 645E3 Diesels under load! For you GE fans, we also included the head-end and DP power.
These scenes were taken from the DVD "MRL Montana Main Line Part 1" which is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Download. For more information click here: www.7ideaprodu...

My late father may very well have been running some of the helpers in this video. MRL’s rebuilt SD-45s were his favorite locomotive.
When I was a young boy, he’d sometimes sneak me onto the locomotive for a run up the mountain with him. There was nothing like the sound of those EMDs’ raw power in 8-loved it. Great memories. RIP, Pap.

Capturing the sound (and sight) of them working was the primary goal of the video.
      Thanks for watching!

The SD-45 is my favorite EMD locomotive. Something about those radiator flares is just really cool looking. Thanks for this!

I think 7idea Productions do a fine job on these video's. Just enough talking vs train sound. Great video's

5:50 That's the sole original SD40-2 on MRL (all other MRL SD40-2's are rebuilt from SD40's, known as SD40-2XR, a modification that was also made to SD45's.).

Santa Fe has huge train yard here in Topeka Kansas. As a kid I was always drawn to the yard because we lived so close by.

Montana Rail Link (Dennis Washington) goes into the annals of history as a railroad operator. Wonder if the engines get a repaint or remain.

Where else in America would you see SD45's midfield as helpers? Its a shame for these fallen flags! Rail really does get in ones blood !

Back in the day with SP and early UP when they took over in the late 90s and early 00s, plenty of older tunnel moter power was still used on the mountain out here(Donner Pass) on a constant with manned helpers still despite newer third generation diesels and dpus. It was definitely a different feel of the engines in run 8 and grinding with everything they had

The locomotive 332 needs a tuneup - too much smoke. I know nothing about locomotives - do modern diesel locomotives use electronically controlled fuel injection? Any progress between 1935 and 2023?

I enjoy watching rail fan videos of railway operation. What I don't enjoy is rail-fans providing free taxi service by transporting crews in their private vehicles. By doing so they are depriving a human being the opportunity of paid employment. If the multi-billion dollar rail corporation wants their crews to have rides in the performance of their duties they should be paying someone to provide that service.
