this is so cool because its the rare time where John wasn't protesting BSSM live, so I've never heard him try to play these songs nicely from that actual time period until now
me too so cool !!!
can you elaborate on johns protest of BSSM live??
No he definitely was in this video. He intentionally kept breaking the time of the song and ruining the feel/groove. He 'protested' BSSM by playing like shit live; because he was unhappy to be in the band at the time.
@@jordantaylor327 i disagree
John on that tour sabotaded the concerts doing crazy experimentations live, not respecting the dynamics or the arrangments from the songs, screaming instead of doing the backing vocals. So that video it's a rare footage with him playing nicely
So glad I got to see them before this song hit MTV. They were incredible in 1991.
so many interesting things on this video: John and flea flipped sides, all the members smoke on stage, audience doesn't give a damn about under the bridge because it's still unknown then. Anthony is the only consistent thing here as he's out of key 80% of the song, lol.
Totally awesome reply, thank you for sharing, LOVE
NoChrReq the perks of being a legend
Funniest and truest comment of all time! 😂
I didn't understand about Anthony😕
Every time people say Anthony is out of key in this song, I think he sounds great (except for the “love” in that first chorus). For some reason it usually works
lmao anthony sounds like he’s drunk at a karaoke the first chorus 😂❤️ absolutely love the fact of how chill they are and smoking
This is litterally under the bridge before it is what it is now but look how John plays with so much purity like he just really cares at this point in his life until the tour started but this is what he wanted just that 50 -100 crowd like the viper room
Exactly, thank for the comment
This is the best performance of this song. I've seen a lot, but this by far beats it. John and Flea and Chad did amazing job.
Shane castle dude
yeah nothing beats slane.
Slane is for noobs
John never plays the verses quite like this anymore - its the only recording ive found where he plays it like the recording
You have some of the best early Peppers stuff on RUclips, thanks man.
Also, it's amazing how Under The Bridge was so "ignored" by the fans at the very beginning. (just listen to the crowd cheering volume when the song starts, nothing compared to the later years). Single releases really did make a difference back then.
*****
Yeah that's what I mean! As soon as it spinned as a single, it got it's success. Probably because of MTV as well.
Flea is playing John Doe's bass from the band X
Bertomobil the exact same thing when they first played Scar Tissue in 1998 before it was released as a single. Little did they know that it would become one of their biggest hits.
Damn am i the only one who thinks they look so cool smoking on stage while playing under the bridge?, it's Fuckin' Epic!
way cool way to look at it.
Smoking is ok. In Europe we smoke and we live always 10 years longer than you Americans.
@@fiammavalli3732 us Americans are fat and lazy.
I like how they all chill out and smoke at the beginning like they're not performing right at the moment
first time it was performed live...wow , thank you for sharing this
My favorite RHCP's song and this is best live performance during BSSM tour 1991
when the whole band smoked on stage in the same song
smoking weeeed man, weeed! lol
0:36, looks like a cigarette lol
I was just kidding..
John said he thought pot was for burnouts but then he found out Flea was spaced out every show so he became a pothead
when it was illegal... lol
First time seen Flea smoking ❕🍻
The crowd doesn’t even care about what a special moment this is
because this song hadn't became big yet
Glad to be seeing these live footages as an adult, was a baby back then :D
This guys are that so really high ... Great times!
Very sweet version.
0:36 I loved that man!! SO Beautiful
Daaaamn!!!! One of the 1st times played live!
This was the first time played live. BSSM was released a week prior to this show
for sure! i could tell by the date! stoked thank you so much for sharing this!
Did they play Suck My Kiss at this show?
no, they didn't
glad you like it, share it :-)
Man! This is a relic! John was on fire in that show! Thanks!
Actually very good performance. I love early rhcp and I love this channel, best videos you have, a rare stuff!
Beautiful, perfect 💕
Dont care about the smoking stuff, this is so valuable for a fan
they were smoking weed man, weed :-)
It would be amazing to see the whole performance in its entirety. Smoking is a bad habit, yes. But they looked so incredibly gorgeous sharing one cigarette between two. This is one of the best performances of Under the bridge I've ever seen.
Yes I think I uploaded the full set already? Can't remember. If I didn't I will. Thanks for reply, great comment🤣
@@WorldRockumentaryChannel Thank you so much, I finally found the whole concert, yesterday when I was looking for some reason I decided that this was a part from the concert in 1989, I was inattentive. I watched the entire concert literally in one breath, a crazy atmosphere.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The BEST rhcp period
the only time it was played live the right way a few weeks after BSSM was released...
Gold!
Wow, John was actually into this song back then, you can tell. I really don't know why he ended up hating it so much. It's an absolutely amazing song, John's guitar part in this song is one of the most emotional pieces in music history. So many people love it, I guess that's why John hated it. He just had to be different.
I also think its the immense fame associated with mostly all of BSSM. I assume John would've been satisfied in life if he just played in small venues like this the rest of his life.
elephantshelf yes I agree, but it seems like he hated this song the most lol. Maybe because this was the song that launched their mainstream success.
John never said he hated the song. He hated being a rock star, that’s why he played the song badly on purpose. He’s talked about the song many times and never said he hated it.
@@louislaz Also to fuck with Anthony. He knew how much this song means to Anthony, so he would "fuck it up" (put in quotation marks cause it still sounded good lol) to piss Anthony off. He absolutely hated being in the band at that time and really only stayed for Flea. Flea was the only enjoyable part of being in the band to him.
@@featheryfemme Not true at all. I hate when people make stuff up. He was not doing anything against Anthony, he was just trying to be creative. At that time, he didn't want to play the same chords over and over, he wanted to do something new every night. And it just so happens that John's creativity clashed with Anthony's wishes, which was to play the song as it was originally written.
This is legendary footage.
Thank you for sharing my dude!
1:06 Red SMOKE Chili Peppers!
I was 2 years old when they were playing this. I’m turning 30 next month and this is still the best song on earth ❤️
wow, We're so happy you enjoy this, the band was so young during this time, in their mid 20's except for John
What flea on left side and jonh on right side
Francisco Santos A. Filho I was thinking the same, it's so strange
I think the image is just flipped
it's real time @@jimmyschmickel2149
could not get enough . . .
Maybe upload the entire performance ?
Uma versão magnífica
flea on the left and john on the right and the band smoking altogether
looks like back in the day in this vid, ppl dont know this track gon be a classic
This is fire
Flea playing a Pbass?
So cool!
Thank you for all
0 dislikes, seems like really good shit 💯
Oh, hell's yea! Fuck yeah! Some serious retro shit right here ya'll. Fuck yeah!
This is what should have been
FLEA is no just on the other side of the stage he is using a PRECISION BASS!
Holy fuck!!!!!! You are a legend for posting this!!!!
Anthony performance killed my ears
So sick, any more stuff from 88'-89' coming? Cheers man
Oct 7 by birthdate wtf 🤘🏻
John was pretty healthy in that time
Antuán Ávila pre drugs
His really bad time with drugs happened after he quit the band the first time.
Después de un tiempo, a John le afectó mucho la fama con las ventas y el reconocimiento de BSSM y abandonó la banda, después, cayó en depresión y en las drogas luego de un tiempo.
One dude from Jane’s Addiction (forget who) introduced him to Heroin in ‘91, so it’s quite possible he’s already tried it by this video
@@gopistons4 Dave Navarro?
Cadê os BR assistindo essa relíquia top?
Oh wow 😻 this made my night. Do you happen to have the date in 1991? Things look to be going well for them here ✨✨✨
Anthony looks like a god here 🥵
Healers I walk withbyah
rare flea with precision bass
This is before john went off the deep end
yeah, there was no way to help him too.
@@WorldRockumentaryChannel why you say that?
@@Logoooo Well, for one, they had no idea that John would eventually get addicted. I mean, how could they have known? Another reason is that heroin is one of those things that you never want to try, even once. It's something that you can get addicted to immediately, and that addiction can get _bad._ There are a lot of other reasons, but those two are probably the biggest.
Flea playing a P-Bass? Crazy
wow, I didn't even notice that, good eye
@@WorldRockumentaryChannel It even looks like a 59 P-bass, so it might have been borrowed. Idk
yeah I think he borrowed John Does bass from X this night. They played a set earlier.
I like the SNL version better ;)
Just watched it again, I remember seeing that and being blown away at John's condition.
World Rockumentary Channel™ his scream during that performance is haunting, knowing some of what he must have been feeling at the time.
This one has more positive vibes than the SNL one
Chad had hair??
lol he was a metal head
Rest of show?
Great. First time i see flea playin wal bass in live. Before i only saw flea played wal in funky monks video
you mean fender precision bass...
I think john just grew tired of Anthony being tone deaf
Hey. Who is playing the intro at the beginning ? Sounds like John style ha.. ?!
Great stuff anyway. Hope that's just a beginning.
thats john
Tomasz Piotrowski because is john...
It is John he jus looks different cause of surgery
scarred
Anyone know which song the jam from the intro to the video is from?
Does he ever sing in tune?
Never
John's playing is great but god Anthony in just terrible here
the sound guy had the levels wrong, it 's good because this is naked vocals to the max LOL
Do you have the whole setlist for this show?!
is this the old Music Machine in West LA?
At 3:15 did john play that part differently than the original?? after the breakdown when he's supposed to sing he plays the original tho
Overdubbed part on the recording
1
Chad's snare was tuned too low. :(
what bass is flea playing?
When john was good ..
Damn he's hot 🤐
Anthony singing out of tune. Priceless.
It was all part of his act. 🤣🎸🎶🥁
Chad's snare was too loose. :(
I just noticed that after all these years too
Dave Navarro hitting the dislike button.
Ant’s intro (Flea doesn’t have his bass so we’re gonna play something slow), to me, has a hint of embarrassment.
Maybe this is around the time he realized vulnerability sells.
Wow, Anthony isn't singing like shit and ruining the whole song. Don't like the studio vocals either, but this is actually decent.
you don't really have an ear for music, do you? Anthony is out of the musical spectrum by miles. here he sings out of key all the time and not by an inch. he s terrible.
@@heelstevenmaggle5615 ? Mr. Front-wet, aka Anthony Kiedis, is way out of key. And you sir, well, be well.
@@mithundalal1903
I said he was decent. He definitely gets off key a few times, but it's less bad than it usually is.
@@heelstevenmaggle5615 This is the worst Under The Bridge I've ever heard. Please show me a worse one.
