Hey Mell :) I'm 63 and was going to go grey all over but after seeing your beautiful color I said...Hell to the No!!! So I went back to my childhood photos and like you, I can pull off both warm and neutral colors and so I formulated a color similar to yours with a bit more red in it and Whamo! You are probably the first haridresser that I know to mention the difference between the tones of your hair, skin and eyes. Usually it is just like: " Your skintone is warm, so your hair is warm-toned, too". That was the first video that's really helpful to me, because I have warm toned but pale af skin, neutral light brown eyes with a bit of olive, and a greyish light brown hair (category w). It really helped that you didn't oversimplefy this. Thank You
I’m stuck between category B and W. When I was born I was blonde then when I was like 1 I turned brown and I have been brown for all my life so far but in the summer my hair goes lighter like a light golden so idk what I am please help 😩
Girl, my skin tone, hair and eyes are exactly like yours! For a long time I thought I was a cool tone, but I am able to pull off warmer tones so now that you mention it I can see I am totally a neutral! You’re a life saver!!
Hey Mel, another great video! I'm a category W, the flow charts are fantastic. Have learned so much about hair from this channel (even though I don't have curly hair lol). Felt to comment though and clear up some confusions about the undertones. 1) *An authentic neutral undertone doesn't exist.* You can be MUCH CLOSER to neutral, but someone will *always* lean slightly warm or cool. The best way to tell is to compare your skin with an olive green colour (warm) to a teal green (cool), and see which one is more radiant. There will always be one which looks *slightly* better, pointing to which direction you lean. If you are closer to neutral you can definitely get away with more. In Mels case, she is definitely warm leaning, just not a super radiant warm skin tone, more soft (like me), which is why she looks lovely in the warm leaning hair colours. 2) *Why the veins test can be confusing.* If you are closer to neutral, you may have both blue and green veins. The veins become green when the skin is warmer, with the yellow colours crossing the blue veins making them appear green. So if you have both vein colours, you are closer to neutral, but I guarantee that you will be leaning slightly more warm or cool (again, test with the olive vs teal green colour). 3) *Don't let skin value (the skin colour itself) fool you.* My partner is super fair in skin, burns very easily, *but he is still warm leaning.* You can be fair and warm (though it may be more likely to be cool if you have less pigment), and you can have really dark skin value and still be cool. Hope that helps!
I am also category R. As I have gotten older my color has faded to a lighter copper color. I have no idea what color to choose to cover my grey and add a tad bit of darker red

Your new hair color literally put the biggest smile on my face it looks so good! I cannot stress how much I love it. I LOVED the blonde but I also LOVE this look on you!
I dont get how shes come to the conclusion shes nuetural?? Her skin tone seems about as warm/olive as you can get? She says her vein colours are a 'combination of blue and green' but of course the color green contains blue, (combined with yellow), suggesting her veins are actually green. She looks absolutely gorgeous and clearly knows what shes doing but I always grapple with haidresser/cosmotology applications of color despite being very familiar with color theory having completed a BA in Vis Arts!?? Help!?

This actually helped a lot. I’ve always been confused because I was born with pitch black hair that became a platinum blonde. When I hit puberty I had dark brown roots with ashy brown/blonde highlights and now in my early 20’s I have this dark ashy blonde. My husband was convinced it was brown but literally NO browns matched. Yet I couldn’t believe it to be blonde since no one talks about dark blondes so I didn’t even know they existed. I now understand so much more about my hair, thank you so much!
Your curls make my straight, flat hair cry with jealousy 😩❤️ but seriously, your hair is GORGEOUS!!! Like perfect little ringlets!! My hair could never. And you already know your color is ON POINT!!! 😍 ok ok I’m done simping… for now ☺️ Thank you so so much for the help! you nailed it. great job. I used to do hair years, years ago and color analysis of tones. I'm an R with nuetral more to cool skin tones with blue/ grey cool tone eyes. My natural hair is Reddish blondes got more orange as I got in my teens... I know I was born in contrast...lol My mother is Italian; Father Scottish. now for Redheads we don't have the standard gray. It will become a muted color and turn lighter to cream then white... Funny thing though 7 years ago I died my hair natural black and I love it...and I have pretty much had every hair color known. blonde hair on me now just makes me washed out unless it has some warm tone in it lije honey-blonde...Always hated my natural...lol Great work some gals can get lost in the textbook side of things nor understand how to mix colors to get that one perfect tone so you are helping. This is by far the best video in the category "color" (skin, undertone, eyes, hair etc) I have ever seen. AND you are beautiful, intelligent, engaging and funny. Subscribing with the speed of light. And I am a W wanna be S.
I DIY and had to save money to be able to afford professional bleach & developer. I cut my hair too. Haven’t been to a hair stylist in years, simply don’t make enough $ to afford this nice luxury. If you do research and don’t go all in to let’s say platinum blonde hair you should be fine with DIY. I do believe in paying professionals if you have the money and if you want a drastic hair change.
@@Fernanda2205 I learned through trial error with my own hair and it took a lot of horrors and hair shedding to finally make my hair look like a pro did it. If you have reddish under? tones(edit) it gets that orange or yellow afterwords. Then you have to learn about toners that are right for you and i wouldnt suggest doing it yourself bc youll wind up w a bigger mess and bigger bill at a salon!
DOOOOO IT!! Some balayage especially for fall would add such beautiful light and warmth and definition to the curls!! In black hair you absolutely do not need to go super light! 3-4 levels lighter makes the world of the difference! Also, don’t want to damage that beautiful dark hair!
This was an absolutely amazing video in hair color theory. I learned a lot and appreciate your time and effort to educate us! Such a beautiful, engaging young lady. Keep up the awesome work and I imagine you'll go do far, if you already haven't. Take care 💜🥰

Well spoken words with a steady organic flow, really helped show case your charismatic personality. Thanks for the upload. This was the video I didn’t know I needed until now. Definitely going to show my girls.
OMG I truly have the same exact answers as you. I have Hazle eyes so neutral, my skin tone is neutral, also I was blond for many years and the older I got the darker it got so category W. And finally, I'm now a natural 5 or 6. With all that being said our hair types are completely different! I'm a 2a-3b. Your so informative! Thank you so much!
Loving your energy! And this video is very informative :) I started my childhood with 10 hair color, super blond and almost white. Stayed there till I was around 16. Then it started to become more golden. Until I was 23 it was like that, I would say between 7 and 8, with some lighter whitish blond highlights and some darker golden ones. The past 7 years, I am 30 yo now, my hair have gotten a lot darker and they are a dark ashy blond color. I have some golden highlights but for the most part the highlights I have are greyish blond, more cold toned than warm toned. My eyes are very bright blue, sky blue, with cold undertones and when the weather is gloomy they become grey..Anyhow, this is where my expertise stops. I have no idea what kind of skin undertone I have. I don't tan easily, it takes like the whole summer to get a bit of color but at the same time I am not 100 % sure I have cold undertones..I have tried the trick with the gold vs silver jewelry and the other ones with the veins but I am honestly more confused now than I was before..xD
Thank you so much for the video and the charts, Mell! You have inspired me to colour my hair. I am category W and level 7, I think. I had a very blond hair, like platinum, the first my hair started to grow when I was 2+ years old, it then over the years first got a little darker to level 9, then it again changed to a little darker to level 8 during my teens, and now I am 7 or 6. My colour palette is somewhere between cool - neutral.
Can you do a video about curly hair cuts like diva cut, rezo cut and others Or just like what curly hair cuts suits to a specific curl pattern or face shape ? Love you ❤️❤️
Mel, I have to say you are amazing! I just came across your video and was blown away by your expertise and knowledge of hair color regarding skin tone & eye color. But the clencher was your awesome personality! I would without a Dault, have you as my hair colorist/stylist, if possible! Thank you so much for this educational video. 😊
Want to be red, my hairdresser tried to talk me out of red highlights and I finally made her do a few. They quickly turned purple. She said told you so. I now listen to her better. LOVE your bloopers 🤣.
They were kind of a purplish red. Probably because I have dishwater blonde or light brown hair anyway that I have been getting honey highlights in fir years and that color doesn’t take well to red dye. That is what my hairdresser tried to warn me about.
This colour looks stunning on you!! Having neutral undertones really makes it hard to decide so I think I will colour my hair just like you haha (I have a lighter natural colour but I think it could work). It truly suits you so well.
This helped a lot, born pail white skin with almost black hair and blue eyes but I went blond in the years now having my own haircolor, dark black has a blue glow but getting grey now want to pop those eyes out.
This was so informative, your delivery style is so natural and engaging, you look amazing....I really think you deserve to have a huge audience!! Thanks!
I believe I'm a W because my hair was a lighter brown when I was younger and it will go lighter in the sun. It's always been definitively (darker) brown though. My strands are mostly on the finer, easily damaged side.
The funniest thing I learned from 23 and me DNA testing ; some have a gene that makes our hair blonde 👱♀️ under the sun!! I have that gene, and even after coloring brown, in 3 days in the sun it turns golden! Highlights for free!!
You are amazing. I wish stylists ACTUALLY applied these principles but most don't! I"ve found myself having to explain to them that my skin and hair is cool tone. And some of them have been like nah you're Latina you are warm lol. But seriously I have to explain this to them? I'm not even a hairstylist! I wish you lived in my city! Also, I have curly hair and your eye color is very similar to mine.
my hair is greying and noticed the grey hairs are more course and wire-like. Could you give us greying people tips on how and what we can do to manage the grey? I do like how my grey is coming in, what would be a good grey hair enhance? Thank you, I enjoy watching you and learned so much from you.

Been a year since you made this and here you are still helping us! Thank you for putting this out. At 44 I'm just starting with the grays. Dyed my hair ONCE in my lifetime. I'm a W/ warm tones. Lightest brown/ darkest blond as a kid, lighter in the sun. Now I'm a dark brown like you. This video helped SO much! Thank you for making it!
I'm a W for hair, with a lot of blond and red natural highlights in my brown hair. For skin I am the palest anyone can be with definitely a Cool undertone. This was fun! Thank you so much!🙂
I am in category W... With Brown eyes, i usually tan fast, but i get burned at first... I like your video, is verry well explained. Thank you for these informations
As someone who voted to stay blonde in your Insta stories, I would like to rescind my vote and put it towards the darker. Your hair looks soooo good! 2020 might be the year that I finally try to color my hair (for fun). I'm a B, but I have some W strands that go blonde in the sun.
Hey, Mell. I just have to say I absolutely love every one of your videos! I have watched tons of “hair color for your colors“ videos and this is by fair the best I’ve seen. Do you think you could make a video/chart for unnatural hair colors? (i.e. Blues, greens, etc...) Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and inner sunshine when we all need a little light in the darkness.
Hahahahaha “read between the lines!!” Hahahahaha love you Mell!!!!!! ... your new look is amazing!!! I love it, 😍😍😍 even more that your blonde look!...
Reporting here from the Warm Brown, with a mixture of fine-to-medium-fine-to some-coarse-hair family and I love my rich, dark brown hair with natural highlights! I didn't actually realize that I have natural reddish highlights until I was fully grown and while standing in the sun one day my husband asked if I put color in my hair to which I said "No". He said, "Oh, then you have natural highlights." Cool! His admiration of the natural color of my hair helped me appreciate the gorgeous color God blessed me with even more. After that, both my parents asked me the same question when they noticed my hair when sunlight hit it. Then, a few years ago I ran across an old picture of me when I was little standing outside in the sun with a big pretty afro puff on the top of my head, and for the first time I realized my hair was a sandy brown color back then.
Yes, don’t color your hair black 😂 took me a while to figure out, my hair color is light brown but very cool toned, almost looks like light grayish, when I colored my hair black it made my eye color pop for a few weeks, but when my roots grew out I looked very very very bald👩🦲 .

Was desperately seeking guidance on picking hair color for my cool ish complexion and brown eyes .... Am about to turn 60 in a few weeks, and have been letting my gray roots grow to nearly THREE INCHES against the also dyed length of my light brown hair -- which I think has too much gold for my skin ... In ANY case, I was fixated to your video -- like the other MILLION or so of us looking for advice .... and man oh man do I wish I could have a consultation with YOU.... I've told my stylist of 6 years that I am very focused on getting the right shade/tone this time, and was told they could do whatever I PICKED... which wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear... What i wanted was someone with the knowledge and confidence of YOU to DIRECT ME -- not the other way around.... I am pretty sure I need to go ash/natural, avoiding gold and warmth, but think there might also be some neutral going in MY COLORING, as well. I am fair, with blue veins, pink undertones, but my eyes are medium brown, with some hazel/gold in them .... Uggggghhhh.... Any chance you know of a Brooklyn or NYC salon that knows their COLOR STUFF and how to compliment skin undertone, eyes and hair texture? It IS. NOT. EASY. to find, just sayin' Anywho, even though I am clearly late to the party, I am SO glad I came; You are FANTASTIC. TY.
So, what if my skin is cool toned, my eyes are neutral (green on the outside, brownish copper on near the pupil), and my hair is 'W' (born platinum blonde but darkened to medium brown). Would I be considered generally neutral? Love your videos! They're so educational and interesting!
I'm an oddball. My hair is very dark, my eyes are dark and my skin is very pale. I only burn and never tan. I think my hair looks better a shade or two lighter than my natural color. My hair as a small child was auburn but became browner and darker as a child.
The only way to receive true happiness is to be born again.Jesus loves you and is coming back to earth soon. This year is giving signs of end times. You need to repent. Please believe and spread the word
Dear, you have a wonderful and friendly character!! You look really beautiful and harmonious. You could look simply GREAT with your natural hair colour (ashy brown) and perhaps silver ends / strains. I think you are indeed cold, a winter type :)
omg im a W... i was blonde as a child but turned brown when I was like 5 or 6... i have brown hair that turns blonde in the sun and I used to wear it in a pony tail all the time so the underside of my hair is way lighter than the outside hahaha, whenever I wear it down people ask if I dyed it darker
My eyes are both cool and warm. I never knew they where "neutral" until today! I have blue eyes but have yellow/orange in the center and specs throughout. But as a medium/dark blonde with some red hairs here and there with cool light skin I feel I could never pull off a warm colored hairstyle.
The yellow dots in your eyes might also be from being in the sun a lot, as someone who also has light eyes, I noticed it before, so I did some research, but I don't know the technical terms, it could be natural as well, but its likely a response to the sunlight, before your eyes get darker to protect themselves, if they disappear when you are inside a lot. The yellow dots would eventually darken to protect your eyes, pretty cool imo
@@emiv592 hmm that is interesting. I'll have to pay attention to that see if I notice a difference my eyes have always had the 4/5 different colors in them. Never knew it could be from the sun. People always said it was the German in me.
W team 😁😂 well... i'm just wondering if i could be in category R on some points... I have a lot of ginger/copper reflects and my hair tends to be more ginger-like in Winter... 😅 in summer my hair lightens a bit like when i was young (kind of golden blonde). So not really sure but maybe i'm more in the W category ? 😊 Also i'm french and i can't really explain what my color is in english (i think kind of medium or light brown but not sure, in french we say "châtain clair"). Oh and i definitely will go redhead before the end of the year! I tried a soft copper color, it wasn't warm and light enough for me (it looked surprisingly more "red" than copper because the hairstylist applied a color on my natural color, and i really wanted the color to pop, and it didn't showed up so much as i wanted). Such a great video! I've already seen some similar videos but they were not explained that much. 😘 So keep going! 💪
My hair sounds a lot like yours! English is my first language and I always just discribed it light brown/ dark blonde. When we learned about hair colors in French class that’s what my teacher said my hair was (châtain clair). There’s not really an English word for it
Well, that was easy. I have all the exact same mixed skin, hair and eye tones as you. Except I am a couple shades lighter in W hair category. Thanks. You made this easy for me.
The only way to receive true happiness is to be born again.Jesus loves you and is coming back to earth soon. This year is giving signs of end times. You need to repent. Please believe and spread the word
I’m category B, neutral/warm skin with warm eyes and I think neutral-warm hair. So I’d go best with blacks, espressos, and reds. Which I can agree with cause I’ve dyed my hair black and magenta red (didn’t pick up completely with the red) before and it matched me really well.
Inspired by this video (same skin tone, same colour, same porosity, with wavy/curly hair in progress) I skipped from blonde ends to a cold strawberry-golden-rose nuance on the whole hair, resulting in slightly lighter "pink" on the ends, but with a great coherence as a whole. I never thought I could abandon blonde hair ends, but i'm happy I did it. My face look much healthier and "alive", even if I have boring, mouse-like dark eyes, but now, with a BLUE makeup on them, they POP! And, more importantly, with no makeup I look fresher and younger. Thanks so much, I'm learning a lot.
My entire family is too. My teenage daughter got sick of having (naturally) platinum blonde hair and got it colored dark brown. I just tell myself it’s only hair.

You’re a life saver!!
I am neutral. It took forever to figure it out.
I am one of the 1% who is a red head, natural Category “R”

I am also category R. As I have gotten older my color has faded to a lighter copper color. I have no idea what color to choose to cover my grey and add a tad bit of darker red
Same!
Yes, me tooooo :)
Me too! 😄
Just went to the salon to color my hair and left almost in tears because she said she literally can only do brown! (my hair is darkest brown) determined to add some color in my life, I went to the one who always has the answers 😍 literally appreciate you so much xoxo
Me, an olive skin, every time someone says "cold, warm or NEUTRAL": oh shit, here we go again 🙂 👍
Wait what? I don't get it 😅
I feel you. I have olive skin so am I warm, cold or alien lol.

Most olives (me, Portuguese) can’t go wrong as winters.
You just totally blew my mind. I have always pulled really warm and I have tried like CRAZY to get my hair to be an ashy blonde and it’s just not happening, no matter what I do. I am also a W, and now I finally understand!! Thanks!!
I’ve never been so happy to have a neutral skin tone! So many options 😍 😍
Your new hair color literally put the biggest smile on my face it looks so good! I cannot stress how much I love it. I LOVED the blonde but I also LOVE this look on you!
Yes!! I'm having a little trouble for what color I'm going to do. So this came just in time. 😍😍😍😃❤
I need to color my hair and have watched so MANY hairdressing/colorist vids but they never make sense to me!!??

Did yours start getting lighter again too? Mine got super dark but then went to more of a dark blonde.
@@spacecat1974 It gets lighter in the summer and when it's longer

Thank you so so much for the help! I’m about to lighten my hair and know very well the pitfalls of choosing the wrong tone for your overall look, so your expertise is very much appreciated!! Wish me luck!! 🍀
It would be so cool if we could upload our hair routines on Instagram and Mell and Amanda could make a video giving us tips! I think even if you can’t get through everyone, we can still benefit from seeing others style their hair! What do you think??
Also I love the new color Mell!!! Looks great! 💗
that's a great idea!

you nailed it. great job. I used to do hair years, years ago and color analysis of tones. I'm an R with nuetral more to cool skin tones with blue/ grey cool tone eyes. My natural hair is Reddish blondes got more orange as I got in my teens...

now for Redheads we don't have the standard gray.
@@CrownedLily I wish I could do that too! But I'm scared to bleach it by myself because I KNOW 100% that I would mess it up
I DIY and had to save money to be able to afford professional bleach & developer.

You're such a saviour! I've had dark black hair my whole life and I'd love some warmth to make my curls pop. This makes me want to do it even more!
DOOOOO IT!! Some balayage especially for fall would add such beautiful light and warmth and definition to the curls!! In black hair you absolutely do not need to go super light! 3-4 levels lighter makes the world of the difference! Also, don’t want to damage that beautiful dark hair!
That reddish brown hair is gorgeous on your skin tone!!!
This was an absolutely amazing video in hair color theory. I learned a lot and appreciate your time and effort to educate us! Such a beautiful, engaging young lady. Keep up the awesome work and I imagine you'll go do far, if you already haven't. Take care 💜🥰

Wow thank u for such kind words 🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
OMG I truly have the same exact answers as you. I have Hazle eyes so neutral, my skin tone is neutral, also I was blond for many years and the older I got the darker it got so category W. And finally, I'm now a natural 5 or 6. With all that being said our hair types are completely different! I'm a 2a-3b. Your so informative! Thank you so much!
You have the most adorable personality and funny too! Yes I wanna see the best hair cuts.
Love you ❤️❤️
I love that hair color on you, looks so perfect and flattering for you ! 😊
Natural redhead now grey. Cool undertones. I've tried several hair colors. Im loving soft black.
I think I'm in category 'W' with Mell!!
Me too I had the lightest blonde when I was a toddler and it got darker and darker over the years to a level 6, goldenish light brown, I think.
I had golden blond hair and started to darken till it became a medium/dark hair that lightens in the sun.
Want to be red, my hairdresser tried to talk me out of red highlights and I finally made her do a few. They quickly turned purple. She said told you so. I now listen to her better. LOVE your bloopers 🤣.
Why did they turn purple? I’m curious
I love you girl , Iam searching for eay to determine my tone for 2 years now and just NOW i know it finally
This helped a lot, born pail white skin with almost black hair and blue eyes but I went blond in the years now having my own haircolor, dark black has a blue glow but getting grey now want to pop those eyes out.
new subscriber! i love her energy and she still keeps it professional.
Same idk where I belong
Such a great video! Thank you! I’ve been working on my own hair and my son wants me to do his and this was SO helpful for understanding our hair, skin, and eye color differences!
So sorry I disliked your comment by mistake 😊😂 This video was very helpful 😁
I'm a B-category hair color, my seester is a total W. Started out blonde, ended up medium brown, and lightens in the sun.

I cannot thank you enough for breaking down tones!! You clarified to me that I'm neutral. I was always so conflicted!!
I love the way u explain everything in detail. I wish u were my college professor lmao.
As someone who voted to stay blonde in your Insta stories, I would like to rescind my vote and put it towards the darker. Your hair looks soooo good! 2020 might be the year that I finally try to color my hair (for fun). I'm a B, but I have some W strands that go blonde in the sun.
OMG The best video to help me. I've been trying to figure it all out for over 20 years. This is awesome. Thank you

Yeeeesss I love color theory!!! Aaaahh your new color is stunning!!! 😍😍😍
You could do a TED talk. This is an amazing video that explains everything so well. Now how do you keep your curly hair look so amazing?

Yes, don’t color your hair black 😂 took me a while to figure out, my hair color is light brown but very cool toned, almost looks like light grayish, when I colored my hair black it made my eye color pop for a few weeks, but when my roots grew out I looked very very very bald👩🦲 .
Same here ,looks awful
Try doing a toner instead of permanent color. It fades away and doesn't give you that harsh line as your hair grows out.

What are you even talking about... That has nothing to do with my post 👎 Or this video!
I think I’m a neutral leaning on the cool side. I played with hair color and noticed cooler tones look better on me. Thanks for this!
It IS. NOT. EASY. to find, just sayin'
Anywho, even though I am clearly late to the party, I am SO glad I came; You are FANTASTIC. TY.
I was waiting for the video for the whole day 🥳❤️
So, what if my skin is cool toned, my eyes are neutral (green on the outside, brownish copper on near the pupil), and my hair is 'W' (born platinum blonde but darkened to medium brown).

Not so odd- that is me, too. My father has black hair and my mother is a redhead.
Dear, you have a wonderful and friendly character!!
You look really beautiful and harmonious. You could look simply GREAT with your natural hair colour (ashy brown) and perhaps silver ends / strains. I think you are indeed cold, a winter type :)
strands instead of strains, sorry
I am a B but my hair lightens in the summer without any additives. Love your content!!!!
omg im a W... i was blonde as a child but turned brown when I was like 5 or 6... i have brown hair that turns blonde in the sun and I used to wear it in a pony tail all the time so the underside of my hair is way lighter than the outside hahaha, whenever I wear it down people ask if I dyed it darker
There’s not really an English word for it
I'm W! With one greyish eye and one green eye. And very cool tones skin. All my relatives have a very light skin tone but a cool almost black hair.
Well, that was easy. I have all the exact same mixed skin, hair and eye tones as you. Except I am a couple shades lighter in W hair category. Thanks. You made this easy for me.

I’m category B, neutral/warm skin with warm eyes and I think neutral-warm hair. So I’d go best with blacks, espressos, and reds. Which I can agree with cause I’ve dyed my hair black and magenta red (didn’t pick up completely with the red) before and it matched me really well.
same! this just confirmed my new color, espresso haha thank you!
This is the best video I’ve ever seen! Now I know I’m neutral/ warm. Thank you so much!!
Literally on the edge of my seat to find out what I am 🤓👩🏻🦱😍 you’re the best Mell!
