Yogendra Yadav talks about what went wrong with the Lokpal movement and why he left AAP

  • Yogendra Yadav discusses politics, virtue, his ambition for his party, Swaraj Abhiyan, and the cost he had to pay after entering politics, in this brutally honest interview with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra, The Arts & Ideas Club, Gurgaon on 16 October 2016.
“The entire political administration of this country including the opposition is unable to defend the idea of India and that’s why we need a new force,” says Yogendra Yadav on being asked why he formed his party. He also talks about how Rahul Gandhi sunk the Congress, his views on being called a Leftist and much more.
Calm, sensible and dignified, Yogendra Yadav is not your typical politician. From being an academic and authoring school text books, to starting his own political party Yogendra Yadav has come a long way. He started his political career by supporting the Lokpal movement and then later joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2012. He served as a member of the National Executive of the party but matters took a sharp turn in 2015, when he was expelled from the party. A year later he formed Swaraj Abhiyan along with other former AAP members.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.
Membership to Algebra is by invitation or referral. If you know an Algebra member, ask them to put you in touch with us.

@Shambhu The Eternal I am a bhakt of Kejriwal ji. I have been following AAP since 2013. I am an NRI and have seen almost all videos of AAP, debates of Yogendra Yadav between 2013 and 2015. I have seen videos by AAP members where they accuse YY trying to subvert Kejriwal and organize a coup in AAP. Of course the circus YY and Bhushan created in national media after 2015 is for everyone to see. If you watch the documentary "An Insignificant Man", you can watch YY's envy, jealousy and narcissistic attitude come to fore.
I recognize his tremendous contributions in building a good image for AAP among urban Indians. YY has been an electoral loser, otherwise AAP would have tolerated him and he could have had an opportunity to grow. Now he is easily replaced by people like Atishi.

Answer to why social movements fail in politics can be found in pyschology. Social movements tends to be categorical about many issues. It takes a while to change mindset. Hence these movements when enter politics also have to face sharp opposition among poeple. Politics unfortunately is very much about perception.

I don't understand this obsession of the Secular Intellectuals with the "Idea of India".....
Indian society is not based on an idea as some of the other Western countries are.....
Indians are secular by nature and this comes from pragmatism not a fancy idea (as it is in the West).....there is so much diversity in our society that the only way to co-exist is by being secular and going beyond tolerance to the level of acceptance.....

The current Government has tackled most of the problems but they will take sometime to become fully functional. Some movement for the Lokpal is better than no movement. It can be improved with time and I am sure this will happen in time. No point being negative. He tried7 to go into politics but failed miserable. At least see the bright light at the end of this political tunnel with the current Government. Your views mean nothing if the Government of the day does not seriously evaluate it.

Sir,I just wrote what i felt about Mr. Yadav's presentation, style .He is boring you dont feel it ...OK. Don't take it personal .He is a learned man and i m sure. i believe he has good intention of playing cleaner politics. But his idea wont reach to general public(like me) until Mr Yadav don't present it the way one understand. Using fancy vocabulary and wearing ethnic cloths make you looks like intellectual which is not wrong at all .But these so called intellectual lives in self illusionist world which is a bit disconnect from real world. He is such a disconnected man that he dint even win a election from Hariyana, state he belong from. He is out of the party of which he himself was a found member. I wish he would have been in AAP still and be a balancing force in the party to stabilize it to keep it on party fundamentals. Mr Yadav said he was "duped" No sir you let yours self duped by accepting, accepting and accepting your criticisms inside the AAP .This started with Anna movement and then Lokpal which means peoples power .then how it happen that A person have all the powers to run, to include or disinclined someone. It is Mr Yadav and other founder members who gave authority to rule Mr Kajriwal to become as party sarvesarva .
