Well done, old skool skillz not taught much anymore. You put in some love into that, you will enjoy them. FYI you can use this method for a 6 ft tank if you use a center brace or use 2x8 for the span without a center brace. You can counter sink those screw holes and might have been happy with that. just my 2 cents, going check out your fish on ur channel....again, nice job!
Every project always requires more tools! I know you mentioned you weren't handy, but you did a fantastic job! They look really sharp, and I think they really take the fish cave to the next level!
Thanks for showing all your small errors too. It makes it a real DIY project like so many people experience IRL. A cheap wood chisel could be a nice addition to your tool kit for finishing those dado cuts instead of a Dremel.
As a new woodworker myself, I started with only mechanics tools and nothing for woodworking. Building garage and shed shelving, small fish racks and yard stuff, I know exactly what you mean by slow progress, not wanting to use the saw again, happy accidents and the frustration of finding nice boards. I’ve improved a lot (and bought a lot of tools!) but I’m actually having fun now. I was building some shed shelving for my wife when I watched this video the first time. Need to start building some 40b stands soon because I’m being overrun by calico plecos! I use 5/8” bolts and 3/4” plywood shelving to avoid the 2x4 along the front; that gives me more space to reach into tanks. I also prefer paint - but then I love painting. Watching you crawl out at the end of day two was worth watching the whole video! Lol. Those stands did end up looking good, and more importantly; they’re functional! I should say, my first stand attempt, which was for a 180g, ended up as my wife’s compost bin. I learned a lot though. Wait... you enjoyed the sanding? What planet are you from? Ha!
Glad to hear the calicos are going!! It was a tough go there for a while and thought I was in over my head but I think I’m going to build two more stands and look to apply what I want learned from these as well as advice from all the helpful comments. I was jamming out to some good tunes while sanding, maybe that’s why haha
I love how real this is. I have a ton of projects on hold because of how time consuming and all the surprises along the way. Seems I need a week off work to get anything accomplished lol.
I learned a lot for sure, would definitely do this method again and apply the knowledge I got from the first time around as well as the helpful tips I’ve gotten in the comments
I have been wondering how to build my tank stands. I have built plenty of things in the past, but I just couldn't come up with a stand design that I liked. Your design has really inspired me and I feel like I now have the design I need to build my stands. Thanks for sharing!
Dude, thank you! I own a few screwdrivers and a hammer, not skilled. I will be watching this vid again. I have a small space that if I follow your lead I believe I can squeeze in six 10 g tanks.
Looks great and not that difficult (in technique, in time tho it's obviously exhausting as heck!). The dadoes are a basic and essential technique, super strong. I know Joey and Cory are big time, but their stands leave a lot to be desired. This is top notch.
Coreys stand is kind of genius, anyone can do it. You don't even need tools... Joeys stand was stolen from a reef central thread just like most of his DIY guides.
I used a cinder block stand for my 29 gallon and used 2 by 4's and 3/4 plywood, so the weight was around 8.3 x 29= 240.7lbs. It is Ideal because the Petco 29 gallon was 1/2 inch inside the play, all around. My 2/4 was flat with the ply on top, very thick.
Building my first stand I learned the value of a good cordless drill-driver. My suggestion is to get the combo kit that also includes an impact driver. An impact driver uses less bits and strips out fewer screws, even when you are using pilot holes.
Great video. I couldn’t stop watching given though it’s over 30 minutes. Lol I just watched you work on your fishroom for 30 minutes as a warm up to working on mine all day!
I'm a lifelong carpenter and I have to say these racks are so much better and safer than cinder blocks. It's not hard to do and what you learn you'll be able to use again
Looks great buddy. Two tips for the future. Get a speed square (they are the triangles) and stain the wood after you have all your cuts done and test fits but before you so the final assembly.
Hey Ryan, just caught your informative interview with Randy from Aquarium Co-op on the podcast. I live in Orlando too....Lake Nona. And yes, there is a local fish club.....Central Florida Aquarium Society. They don’t appear to be like the Tampa club or other similar clubs. Take a look for yourself and let us know what you think.
Hey there Frank, thank you for the heads up! I just checked out the website, are they active or how does it work? I see the last news is from 2018 and last event is from 2016
@@WildFishTanks Not a member Ryan so I don’t know. When I came across the site a year ago I noticed that apart from an invitation to subscribe to their newsletter, there was none to become a member. They seem to be big on promoting an annual Immersed aquatic art show. Lot’s of societal news, no notices of monthly meetings, guest speakers etc. I just didn’t get the “vibe” that they were the the type of club that interests me. It’s a shame that central Florida has so many fish farms......not to mention the giant Segrest, yet do not have a real functioning fish club in Orlando, the most visited part of the state.
Hey Wild Fish Tanks, Great job. I built something similar some 15 years ago with 4x4 and 2x4 for my x 3 5' fish tanks, but yours looked better ! How do you maintain your garage temperature especially in the summer for your fish to thrive? Thanks!
Hello Wild Fish Tanks, It would mean the world to me if you replied and liked this comment. I hope it is not too much to ask and I know your a busy guy and you get this a lot.
HI Ryan, Great vid! 4:28 I knew that you were a big guy but those have to be small saw horses, right?😀 I built two racks for my basement this spring using a slightly different design. It's amazing how heavy they get when all the pieces and screws are in place. Cheers, Chris
You did awesome! Just curious why not just buy gladiator racks? For how much money and time spent I think it would have been cheaper and only take an hour to fully be setup....
Badass racks man!! I’m working on planning my first.. has the 6 inch gap for work space been enough? I was thinking I’d leave 10, but if 6 works fine I’d be able to get away with another row of tanks
Looks like you got the wood at Home Depot, my question to you is this. Why didn't you have them cut it for you at home depot? Would remove the need for a Saw and would ensure you got the right mesurements.
8:02 I'm not advising you to do this, you shouldn't do this, but I would take the circular saw with the guard held back, and slowly move it side to side chipping out the remainder of the rough cut. I still have the nine fingers I started with.
Great video, but I have 2 comments. Rule #1 - Measure twice, cut once... Go get yourself a small roofers square, make all the drawn lines and angles so easy....
I agree, I mentioned in the video that a 4 foot span is Max I would recommend. I am currently keeping 4 tanks per row instead of 5 with the middle empty and plan to add vertical support in that space
I always recommend, whether building a deck or what have you, build with 4x the strength you think you need. I've seen 2xs break with 200lbs on 6 center,, and some be fine with 400+. You can't be too careful with living creatures. Great video though. Fish are awesome animals to observe.
All the trial and error, it looked like one of my projects, minus the cursing lol (gotta keep it PG!). Also, it looks like your safety glasses need safety glasses!
Hey man, not just you but all of these tank rack builds on youtube that use wood keep forgetting about lateral movement protection. You guys are focusing so much on downward weight distribution that you forget about horizontal support. For example if you were to bump into that rack with enough force, such as falling and catching yourself from the sides of the rack the combined weight of full tanks would cause it all to come crashing down, especially if any of your viewers live in earthquake zones like California, even a small one will break the structure. (Think of a pendulum) The screws would rip right out and through the wood. It is an easy fix though. Just get some half inch or 3/4 inch plywood and make some gusset triangles or just buy pre made metal ones and screw them in on the back side. Or double the number and add them to the front side as well if you are extra paranoid. The gussets protect your rack from lateral movement. This is important especially if one tank is heavier than the other tanks on an end. Google images shows what they look like. They are just triangles that join the various joints. Just some advice from a woodworker who is also into fish.
Lol! 1.5x3.5 As near as I have learned over the years, the lumber before it is milled to size is rough sawn to those proportions. The 1.5x3.5 is what is left after a 2x4 rough sawn. Having said that, I’ve also heard it’s a conspiracy going back a 100 years by the mills. If you’ve ever seen a 19th century house, they’ll talk about remodeling a home and having to use REAL 2x4s -they measure 2x4. And of course, there is the ease of reading and writing; 2x4 is much easier to say and write than 1.5x3.5.

I want to try something similar for the frame to build tanks and racks because that looks so good.
Doooo it!
To cover the screw holes countersink the screws, then flush cut dowels to hide the screws.
Hey thanks for the video! I was wondering about the aquarium stands!
You’re welcome, I appreciate you checking it out
Nice eye protection psa
lol thanks. I have new glasses now but was rocking those gems for a bit when they broke

We called reject boards boner boards in construction. Great vid and great stands Dude. Thanks for the help.

I’ll right! Now let’s fly you out to Phoenix to build some more with me!
Normally I would baulk at that but I feel I’d learn so much about fishkeeping from being around you it might be worth it lol
Next time use a oscillating multi tool , it’ll be easier to shape the wood notch and avoid a happy accident , Dope video!
Chisel even better

The stain probably looked darker when you got them all setup inside. I used a Metal stand it’s 4 adjustable shelves each one holds up to 2,000 lbs.
You are right, it is a little darker once inside
Looks like you got the wood at Home Depot, my question to you is this. Why didn't you have them cut it for you at home depot? Would remove the need for a Saw and would ensure you got the right mesurements.

Lmao. I've been trapped in a stand before too. Had to crawl out
next time you build something like this instead of the dremel use a chisel and mallet. you will start enjoying woodworking much more :)
Thank you for the tips! Actually planning to build another couple with some different dimensions so will look to invest in those
Great video, but I have 2 comments.
Rule #1 - Measure twice, cut once...
Go get yourself a small roofers square, make all the drawn lines and angles so easy....
Great point Don, will be using one for sure next time around
Lmfao, its been 6 hours and I got 3 cuts done....funny. I'm laughing bro because u sound just like me. Been there never want to go there again.
To anyone reading this #9 or #10 deck screws and wood glue are your friends. And a table saw and a chisel will make these dadoes a joke.
Ahhhh the joy of actually being a welder so i do not need messing with this wood stuff.... Just kidding well done.
Haha I’m envious!
That's pushing the load max on a 2x4. That unsupported span is too great.
I agree, I mentioned in the video that a 4 foot span is Max I would recommend. I am currently keeping 4 tanks per row instead of 5 with the middle empty and plan to add vertical support in that space

There may or may not have been some cursing I edited it out haha
30 boards to find 11 good ones, your lumber store has way better lumber than mine. I've been through 50 and barely found 5 good boards.
It’s always a crapshoot

Why do you have so many tanks?
An upgrade? Yes
Am I going to give up my cinder block stands? No.
must be old video, can't find lumber Thank you Covid
I did this a few months back, it was already during Covid but I’ve heard prices have went up on lumber too
I built a stand and realised I made some measurement mistakes.
Why do they call a 2"×4" a 2"×4" if it's actually 1.5"×3"? 🤔🤭
Lol! 1.5x3.5 As near as I have learned over the years, the lumber before it is milled to size is rough sawn to those proportions. The 1.5x3.5 is what is left after a 2x4 rough sawn.

Yeah, it could be a pain. You have to really use the piece of wood itself as a template
could have used a router to cut the groves
I know there are different ways to do this, I just used what I had on hand
