- JUST OUR LUCK! Trailer Came off the truck, crushed my tailgate & fell off the Bridge into the creek!
What had happened was….
Yes. We rented a Ditch Witch trencher that’s trailer tongue was worn out. Dad borrowed my truck to get it. It comes off the truck, dents my tailgate, busts my taillight, the rolls off the bridge and falls into the ONLY creek on the way home. Just our luck!
Might as well laugh about it!

Whoever tied that ditch-witch down did so with the weight too far back and is the reason for the accident. The wore out tongue wouldn't have mattered so much if it had been loaded tongue heavy as it always should be. Nobody is born knowing this stuff. In a world full of warning labels there should have been a warning label on the trailer tongue saying 'Load 60% of weight forward of trailer axle'.

@@loganmorris9660 the man towing the rig down the rd is ultimately responsible for the rig , the cargo and all safety an loading .... even if some else loaded it , that's a poor excuse and anybody who's done any towing should know u want enough tongue wait too keep the hitch from being constantly tested against the forces of nature

Negative tongue weight is the cause of a LARGE percentage of accidents involving trailers. Avoiding negative tongue weight should be everyone's first priority when towing, but too many don't understand the danger this represents.
YUP. I've been towing bumper pull and 5th wheels trailers from single axle to triple axle for about 47 years now, and knock on wood have never had a disconnect, bearing problem, or accident. I have always kept my trailers in perfect mechanical condition, run tires rated above the weight I'm hauling, and replaced them every 5 to 6 years regardless of wear. I also weigh the actual tougne weight when setting up a trailer to ensure I have at least 10% on the hitch but strive for closer to 15%, just seems more stable at higher speeds that way. A few years ago I started using a TPMS on all my trailer tires, so short of an actual blowout I'll never end up running a tire flat, which means I can plug or patch the leak and keep on trucking without ruining the tire or damaging the trailer...
All that being said I sure can appreciate the people in this video having such a good attitude with the damage and injury and wish them well.
Yup. There are videos all over youtube that visually demonstrate it.
Sadly, so many people do this that you cannot even by a descent trailer anymore unless it's custom. They are all built to have WAAYYY too much tongue weight which greatly reduces the weight capacity per trailer length and makes it less maneuverable, although easier to back up with.
Kinda similar to the reason cars are intentionally designed to handle poorly to reduce manufacturer liability.

Glad y'all are safe and nobody got hurt. Just makes us all remember that no matter what we always need to check our equipment in more of an in depth and detailed way. Same thing happened to me and my dad pulling a boat. Trailer came off the ball and broke the safety chains. We didn't even notice until we slowed down to make a turn and the boat passed us on the road. LOL You are a sweet southern belle Hannah Barron. God bless you and your family.

I'm impressed with the strength of that ditch witch trencher and congratulations to whomever chained it to the trailer. I used to drive a tow truck so tying things down properly is essential. I've seen many many accidents from minor like this one to major pile ups and fatalities. Coulda been a lot worse, God speed and I LOVE THE ACCENT!

I was also impressed it was still attached, but it also told me right away what happened. Well, most of what happened. Given the size of the trailer, it was probably already sized for 1-7/8" ball, so a ball mix up is unlikely, I know of no smaller trailer ball. But, it clearly was either out of adjustment or damaged. They also require grease.
Whenever you see these big trucks with shiny tow balls, you know they've never towed trailer, or they don't know how, or you've just met a true autisté who cleans the ball after towing. ;)

Good job tying it down but most of the weight is behind the wheels which is what caused the accident. Lucky it came off. I've seen loads like this push the truck sideways and off the road.
I actually appreciate this video. Reminds me that even people as experienced as your dad in doing things can have crazy stuff happen. Makes me feel better about myself. Glad yall have a good sense of humor about it.

Trailers just don't become unhooked from a truck. Someone made a mistake somewhere. Just be thankful nothing serious happened and the owner was cool about it.

Ditch witch thought it was a duck 🦆. Saw the creek and wanted to go for a swim. Someone's gonna have a bad hair day over this one. Damn trailer toungue was not locked onto the ball properly. I didn't see the lock pin. What snafu this was. Glad no one got hurt. Cute little 21st Century Southern Belle got through it alright.😉

There are three sizes of hitch ball 1-7/8"; 2" and 2-5/16". I would also look if the trailer size matches the truck size, more likely than worn it may be mismatch. Otherwise it was your lucky day, it could take much worse end. Cheers👍

I remember growing, we were in a group of Dad's fishing club buddies coming home from a camping trip when something similar happened to a boat trailer, but with a bit more pandemonium, expletives, and boat acrobatics ensuing.
