Hey Kirk can I put the bonding agent the day before I do my stucco repair. The old stuff is coming off in sheets. I’ve scraped and pressure washed to get all the loose stuff off. I was hoping to do the bonding agent today and start fresh with the stucco tomorrow
Bonding agents never come off if applied to a well water-pressure wall with at least 3500 to 4,500 PSI strength; this sort of micro-etches the wall to accept the new bonding agent. If your bonding agent came off, that was a blessing in disguise, as the stucco too would have come off within months in sheets too. Nothing adheres to a dusty, dirty wall, except maybe, spider webs. A bonding agent can last at least ten days before a color coat is applied. 👨🏻🔬
@@StuccoPlastering I didn’t do the original stucco job. I’m here to repair it for a friend who owns the house. I’m assuming by watching your videos that they didn’t prep it correctly and I’m learning what to do so I’m at the bonding step. Thank you for letting me know I have a few days to stucco over the adhesive.
Great informative video on bonding agents! After watching your videos, and getting some practice over the past year, I repaired my Aunt and Uncle's color coat in December of 2011 - It was bubbling and lifting badly on one side that gets a lot of sun and weather exposure. They told my when they color coated the house in 2004 the guy waited too long to color coat after applying the bonding agent; he used a clear bonder and mixed it in the stucco mix. Now I know why it was coming off in sheets!
Howdy dawaves22, thank you for the compliment. I recommend you first you pressure wash the walls, then apply a bonding agent, next apply a skim coat. After the skim coat has cured then apply back to back coats of SBSMF. Best wishes and have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering
Howdy altoegovcl, I don’t like to criticize other folks work plus its difficult responding without truly knowing what that fella did. If he were applying an acrylic finish he would first apply a primer then a finish coat, if he were applying a color finish over a brown coat no bonding agent would be necessary. Over a painted surface a bonding agent is necessary. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering
Good morning jemocal, I have gotten several e-mails in the last month very similar to yours. It seems folks that don’t know how to repair the stucco just cover the areas up with wood trim. If the material you apply is soupy add more sand or stucco to make it workable. A fella cant apply mud if it spills over the sides of a hawk. Best wishes and have a great day! Thank you for this video. I suspected this might work but I was getting unsure info from the paint store and the product label. But I've used it for plastering over old paint so I figured if it bonds to old paint why wouldn't new paint bond to it. Your video and experience helped me confirm and try it out.
Hey Gilbert, this is what I do if I am applying a stucco color finish over painted stucco. If I am going concrete to concrete I sometimes double the amount, it all depends on what I am trying to achieve. Whatever the product you decide on, read their instructions as different bonding agents different rules. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano plastering
Hey Savage. Over the past 25 years I have diluted the bonding agent I prefer to use, however I'm sure all bonding agent shouldn't be diluted. Read the instructions. Some bonding agents are made specifically for concrete to concrete so it's too strong for adhering stucco to painted stucco. Do a test patch, apply a bit of color wait until it dries, if it spider checks it's too strong. Best wishes. Kirk Giordano Plastering
Oppps, you’re not supposed to do that, although I have read on some bottles you can, but I am an applicator not an engineer. I guess if one really researches it from the description or instructions it may mean something else. For example (text coats) which are primarily paint, bonding agents, aggregates and colors, these have bonding agent in them but the paint also adhere well to many surfaces from stucco to wood. Hi Kirk, thanks for all the great videos. Ive been following you for some time now. Ive learnt alot from you. Question...would you cut the bonding agent if you where doing a scratch coat over painted block? Or do you only cut it when doing a color coat? Thanks again 👍
I should have mentioned that there is at worst a 6 in gaps surrounding cracked stucco and window. A horrible job concealed by a poor frame. I noticed a horrible draft and coldness in winter. I repaired one window using "premix stucco." It took several coats as it was kind of soupy. Thanks Kirk.

This is easy for me to say, but hopefully you have a cloudy day your fist time applying a color finish. Best wishes, kirk
DO NOT EVER PUT WATER IN WELD CRETE THAT'S LIKE PUTTING WATER IN PAINT IT WAS MADE TO USE UNDILUTED you have to wait a day before you put the color coat on in fact you can wait up to two weeks it says so right on the can and it won't check crack but even if it does just fog coat it you'll get a much better job anyway .
Kirk, great videos. Q: regarding prep on repairing old stucco. I discovered an old poorly installed window and need to fix it. A wood frame concealed a poor installation. How to properly clean and prep the old stucco so that the new stucco adheres properly is of concern. Is brushing and vacuuming/blowing the surface fine? I've read about using "liquid concrete bonding agents" and is using a "premixed stucco patch" product okay to use? Do you caulk the around the window before the stucco? Thanks!
Hi Kirk , will this also work for painted cinder blocks ? Or would you suggest another product ? I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle this. Also , I remember from another video you said no scratch coat needed , is this still true with painted blocks ?Thanks.
Howdy Ricky, this process will work for cinder or concrete blocks, bricks, concrete walls, you name it. As far as not a scratch coat needed, that means just one coat about a half-inch thick is all you need to apply; this too, stands the test of time.🥳
Hi Ricky Dude, Applying a finish coat over any block wall is too thin; thus the result would be when dry all the block lines would show through and have cracks. A base coat must first be applied at least a half-inch thick before any finish coat of stucco. 🥳
Hello Omar, I allow it time to dry myself. When applied, it takes 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the outside temperature. Read the directions as some bonding agents say you can apply when tacky. This I don't do. I allow it to dry.😉
We had our house sand blasted and our painter just applied color coat to the house. Should he have used a bond? Will his job fail after a few years? Also, if he came back a day or so later and restarted an application and some of the strokes are 4 inch wide and streaked, how can the flow marks be repaired to match the rest of the job? Some other places like the top of the chimney I notice he didn't apply the same amount of stucco and it's inconsistent. Can this be repaired? Thanks for your help!
Hi Kirk! Great Videos, I literally spent 2 hours watching most of them :) Question: I own a 1920's spanish style home and over the years, there are several different types of texturing on the building. Howdy Daniel Dude, the cans say don't dilute, however this is for concrete to concrete. When I'm applying an eighth of an inch color coats, I do indeed dilute it, as to prevent spider cracking in usually every square inch. Use full strength for your needs.👨🏻🔬
@@StuccoPlastering thanks Kirk. Just wanted to follow up as I think I may have asked my question in a confusing way. I’m going to color coat, but I’m not going onto a painted surface as you do in this vid. I’ll be color coating a concrete wall with a lime wash veneer. Maybe you understood this - just double checking. Not sure if you are diluting because of the paint which blocks absorption of the adhesive, or because the 1/8 thickness dries out too much because of the adhesive
A stucco color coat is troweling on a stucco finish. A lime wash is mixing Lime in a bucket and using a paintbrush or roller or even a broom and painting the lime over things such as branches, bricks, or similar to protect them from the rains, rodents, or elements. I do have a video that explains what lime washing is. Moving on use a bonding agent.

Hey Kirk, gotta a question gonna be putting a flash wall behind a garage that has at least 18"of dirt against the back of a customer's garage and I do plan on using a bonding agent after the dirt is removed does the surface of the wall need to be pressure washed for better adhesion?
