I was a roadie for PB, when they first signed with Lone wolf production. Rusty passed 2018, and my best friend Peter (buzzy) Gruin passed April 5th 2023. All of the guys from the original band is now gone. John Odanel passed in 2021. I miss them. Thanks for the show.
Same in Houston, but we lost our flagship 30 year AOR station when it flipped to Spanish... And that was over 10 years ago. Nothing has been the same since.
Same thing in Noo Yawk, ova heyah, on the east coast. In fact, it’s the only Point Blank song l know. But l will, however, check out their earlier oeuvre.
What a great band point blank was. Their first two albums are pure, powerful and great southern rock. They had great songs, riffs, whiskey vocals and awesome hooks. Such an inspiring, I wish they had more albums like their first two but anyway their contribution to southern rock was memorable
Pete. Just recently got into the now with a cell phone. The children finally won. Anyway came upon your show and our love of BOC glued me to your show. We must be around the same age we have many bands in common and you're pretty cool. You do a wonderful job and I have learned much listening to you. And then today I find you're doing Point Blank. Incredible! Man stay strong and best of luck in the future you've got another buddy in your tribe
I saw Point Blank live in Tulsa but not sure what year or venue. My guess is 1976 with Foghat and Tommy Bolin at the State Fair Pavillion, (?) I can't remember for sure. Yes, that was it because I remember the beer and popcorn and fair food all over the floor and my old friends that were crammed into the car like sardines. Oh the memories I almost forgot.🙂 TY Pete, and rock 'n roll !!
Being from and still living in the South and having a particular fondness for Southern Rock, really enjoyed the discussion of this often overlooked band. And really enjoyed Simon's view of this as someone from across the pond. Good to see/hear you again, Simon. Agreed that that the later albums or a bit to overproduced and miss the the mark a bit. My favorite is the self-titled debut followed in either order by Second Season and Airplay. The Hard Way would occupy 4th place. After that, I wasn't following the band but your show makes me want to visit that part of the catalogue . Thanks again, Simon and Pete, for a great show about a band that should be heard.
Listened to “Second Season” during my workout yesterday. What a killer album... why have I never heard of these guys? Now the hunt begins for a clean LP copy. Thanks again Pete!
Saw Point Blank open for ZZ Top's World Wide Texas Tour along with Blue Oyster Cult and Johnny and Edgar Winter back in 1976 love those first two albums; haven't heard the others. Thanks Pete.
Great underrated band! I have their 70's and 80's albums. "The hard way" is my favourite one, I do love their live cover of "Highway star", awesome!!! 1. The hard way 2. Airplay 3. Point blank 4. Second season 5. American excess 6. On a roll
Saw them open for ZZ Top in 1976. They were a last minute replacement for Wet Willie who broke up in the middle of the tour. Blew me away went out the next day and bought the first album
My introduction to Point Blank was by accident It was 1976 ZZ Top were the headliner Wet Willie was to open, but Point Blank took their place. Started the set with Free Man, I was instantly hooked got up the next morning and bought their debut album.
Thanks Pete, really enjoy your insights - just dig out my copy of Second Season! It'll be my breakfast listen. Would love to see a video on the best of the 80's Mausoleum Records label from Belgium if you dig any of that stuff?
Let Her Go from 82's On a Roll always a favorite got FM airplay for a bit and disappeared, was a hard album to find in years before internet. Really had know idea that they were Still a band and making music!
Yeah the first one for me was the deal. Amazing sound. Heavier than ZZTop. Some original riffing believe it or not. Not easy to do in that genre. Bill Ham managed/ produced. Opened for Triumph on the Allied Forces tour.
Love Point Blank, especially the early albums, one of the lesser known, Southern Rock bands 1 Point Blank 2 Second Season 3 The Hard Way 4 American Excess 5 Airplay 6 Fight On 7 Volume 8 On A Roll I have to say guys, Living in England, I have had no problem obtaining their two most recent albums, via a certain on line retailer beginning with A.
Really underrated band, one of the very best Southern Rock bands for me, along with Blackfoot! I have only two of their records, but I plan to buy the others.
Thanks Pete, after UFO Lights Out my second favourite track of ALL time is Penthouse Pauper which was on a compilation album “Precious Metal” many years ago. I’ve never listened to anything else by Point Blank in case it spoils Penthouse Pauper for me but I sure will do now! 🇬🇧
"American Exce$$" & "On A Roll" as well as "Best Of" are on iTunes!! Their second for Arista (1977) is missing a song on iTunes!! The other 3 for MCA are missing from iTunes!!!
I remember hearing Lone star fool on the radio: great. The only PB album I could find at the time was On a roll ... and that was it. Bit like Head East. I heard when i get ready live, bought another album and the band sounded completely different.
These guys were so underrated...but they were really big from Texas to Georgia and the other southern states. Just never got any air play up north much at all. The labels really didn't push them and give them the support they needed. That being said they had Mean To Your Queenie ans Nicole. Both were killer songs with great hooks and the music was very tight and rockin'. Same thing happened to Atlanta Band Fortnox...they got signed and after the first record the label started to change them and the sound.
On a Roll is a absolutely great AOR Album, you're right, not so much Southern Rock, but the most of that Bands grew in the AOR Direction in the early/ mid Eighties to make a lot of Bucks. 38, ARS, Skynyrd Side Projects, Blackfoot, etc. Let her go is such a great AOR Tune. Love it. Under the Southern Moniker Second Season rules without a Doubt 👍
Saw them open for Molly Hatchet and AC/DC on their Highway to Hell tour… Point Blank ripped it up really heavy guitars tight 30 minute set! Great topic Pete!
Penthouse Pauper is the only song of theirs I'd ever heard until a few years ago, so wjhile I handt heard anyhting else bh tem I was aware of teh name. It was on an MCA compilation called 'Precious Metal' back in 1980 that also has tracks from Gary Moore, Gillan, Axe, New England,Steppenwolf, Storm,Tygers of Pan Tang, Lynyrd Skynryd, Budgie and Wishbone Ash - quite a varied selection that mirrors a lot of what I like to listen to - though theres no Prog, Fusion or Jazz on it. Listening to Penthouse Pauper at the time I thought they sounded more of a Styx like pomp rocky type of band manly due to the opening synth work, however around ten or so years ago (maybe longer- dont remember) I managed to get hold of a copy of Martin Popoff's Southern Rock Review book that showed me that there are a whole host of great Southern Rock bands, as until then I had only really been into the main bands of the 70's and 80s - Skynyrd, Hatchet (having been wowed by them at their Reading Festival appearance back in 1979), ZZ Top and Blackfoot, however thanks to that book and now these shows with Simon, and others you've done over the last few months, I've been making a concerted effort to get hold of or at least hear ( and kicking myself for not doing so earlier) the fantastic delights of The Outlaws, Charlie Daniels Band, Henry Paul Band (love Grey Ghost - superb album), Allman Brothers ( why did I never get their Fillmore live before? - at least the version I now have is the superb extended one) , Marshall Tucker Band (love the way the flute is used) etc etc. - will need to check out ARS before you do the next show with Simon. Having read through Martin Popoff's book (which I recommend to anyone with at least a passing interest in Southern Rock as it's a great reference book) I also sought out Point Blank's First and Second Season albums - and I've just re looked at he book which has Donny Je Brown's solo album rated as a 9 (Pete having recommended it on his 7th 1 and done show). I have to say that while I'll never be as into or nowledgeable about Southern Rock as Simon obviously is, there are still many of us Brits who love and appreciate this genre of rock music - after a hard day at work or having studiously listened to brace of King Crimsons sometimes its just great to flirt with disaster or tap your foot along to any of the above mentioned. Lots of good time music that raises the spirit, and by gum dont we need that just now!
Great band, I actually got to see them at a Blues festival in the UK about 10 years ago but it wasn't the original lineup. Second Season and the Hard Way are my favourie albums. Johnny O on vocals and Kimbo and Rusty on guitar - Brilliant and sadly missed
An enlightened fact concerning Kim Davis, he cut is teeth in late 60 band: The Family Dog with Joe B. Wilmore in drums.,..then he and Joe got together with a young guitarist named Steve Vaughn in BLACK BIRD. This gave Davis the direction for Point Blank
Great program Pete... I've got about 3500 CD's and 500 vinyls you'got at least three times as much. Where do you find the time to listen to all these albums? Because it's hard to decide what to listen to expecially when you're surrounded by top class music at all levels.
Thanks for another excellent video Pete. Southern Rock is my thang and I think I might be South Africa's number one fan of the genre😂..Will give that 2nd album of Point Blank a spin. I seem to have overlooked it. The lesser known bands of SR have released some gems. Do u like or listen to Grinderswitch, The Winters Brothers Band and Heartsfield? The 80s really ruined the classic sound of most of the great Southern Bands. I only have the first two 38 Special albums for example, their commercial redirection was not for me. Wonder what direction Skynyrd would have taken if the plane crash had not happened? I think Ronnie wanted to explore producing and perhaps a country album?
Incredibly late to the game but I'll play, regardless. I like them all but given I heard the later albums first & I love AOR, I probably like the later albums more than many: 1. Airlplay 2. On Roll 3. American Excess 4. Debut 5. Second Season (haven't had this one very long. Might well climb given more time) 6. The Hard Way I have Fight On! from 2009, which is worth picking up if you ever see it. If it were included, I'd have placed it at #5.
Much better than black foot. I really like the song "on the run" from the hard way record. A perennial warm up band, they were very good live. I think they would have benefitted more from a producer that could break them out of their southern country niche. Havent heard any of their new (2000+) stuff.
So not many people know this, Kim Davies played in Black bird, with SRV in 1970. Bill Wolf met with Rusty a Stevie in about 76 I think to propose a band idea featuring them both. Stevie didn’t trust Wolf. I met Rusty in 79. He was very nice person. We talked for a long time. It’s a strange business to be in when you are at the top of the concert tour business but just can’t break through. There r songs are creative and super high energy. Was the issue, the production ? Or politics ? I know that what they did to Bad Finger was politics. I read that Rusty had to work in construction and I was like, wtf. Rusty was one of the greatest southern rock guitar players in the world. He should be ranked along side hughy thompson, Vince Gill, Billy Gibbons. I’ll always be a huge fan.
Glad I found this...the first Point Blank album is easily a Top 20 all time album for me. What a ferocious statement album that was. problem was, Bill Ham may have produced them, but he sure as hell didn't promote them. He had his hands full with another little ol' band from Texas at the time. Real shame, actually. I had to revisit Second Season to see why I lot interest after the first album, and sure enough, it felt like a tepid letdown compared to the first one (for my tastes). Plus, a couple of rehashed ideas from the first one. Who knows, maybe if my first exposure to the band were Second Season, I might've felt differently about it. At any rat, Kim Davis and Rusty Burns...what great axe slingers. Also a crime by Bill Ham, the way he recorded the drums. Sounds like he applied the classic '70s "recorded in a wet cardboard box" mastering acumen. You can barely make out the snare on the second album. It sounds like he mixed and mastered the first couple of albums as though he were counting on solely 100% AM airplay...no FM for these guys. What the hell, Bill. Oh, and Jon O'Daniel...dynamo on vocals.
Interesting about these second tier bands it’s always they sound like Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, ZZ Top, etc. Never a definitive original sound. Probably the reason why they never moved into the upper tier. That said Point Blank were definitely talented players and a fun worthwhile listen.
All the members are gone now except for Bubba Keith. They were all my personal friends, and I was able to share the stage with them many times. They stayed in court with Bill Ham their producer for years. He was not the most upstanding person.
Their version of Highway star isnt country rock LOL No shuffle beat or chicken pickin LOL Other than the better soloing, it's no different than the original. Those guitarists and keyboard player do a better job than Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore.
First two albums are AWESOME.
Been seeing a lot of these episodes lately from bands I've never heard of. Glad to have more "new" music to discover.
The song “Nicole” was a staple on the AOR stations in the Detroit area where I grew up.

Love the track stars and scars, awesome guitar work.
Hi Pete. My heart is so so broken
Thanks for the videos to make me happier.
I could not sleep last night.
RIP Eddie
Great band, back when FM Rock radio had interesting playlists they would play Mean To Your Queenie and a few others from Point Blank.
Ain't that the truth. Don't even consider true free wave radio exists anymore.
Pete. Just recently got into the now with a cell phone. The children finally won. Anyway came upon your show and our love of BOC glued me to your show. All time favorite song.."Great White Line". Still smokin' southern rock!
Oh the memories I almost forgot.🙂

Always liked Mean To Your Queenie buy them. Seen them open for ZZ Top in the early 1980's

1. The hard way
2. Airplay
3. Point blank
4. Second season
5. American excess
6. On a roll
There are two other studio albums
Saw them open for ZZ Top in 1976. They were a last minute replacement for Wet Willie who broke up in the middle of the tour. Blew me away went out the next day and bought the first album

My first meet with the band was On a Roll in a time I was much into Melodic Rock. Then I heard the debut, a very cool album.
The song "Nicole" went to # 39 in September of 1981 & their only Top 40 song.
Thanks Pete, really enjoy your insights - just dig out my copy of Second Season! It'll be my breakfast listen. Would love to see a video on the best of the 80's Mausoleum Records label from Belgium if you dig any of that stuff?

Muito bom! Eu tenho dois álbuns: Point Blank e Second Season, é dificil escolher o melhor dos dois, são sensacionais! Abraços!
Love Point Blank, especially the early albums, one of the lesser known, Southern Rock bands
1 Point Blank
2 Second Season
3 The Hard Way
4 American Excess
5 Airplay
6 Fight On
7 Volume
8 On A Roll
I have to say guys, Living in England, I have had no problem obtaining their two most recent albums, via a certain on line retailer beginning with A.
Have you heard Volume 9 very good release
@@donaldellis8952 No, I haven't, I must admit to not knowing about this, will definitely check it out, thanks for the info Donald.
I remember hearing “let me stay with you tonight” and “Nicole” on the radio. They were mildly popular in northeast Ohio.
Bubba Keith was also on the James Gang’s “Newborn” album. Great show though. I’ll be listening to more Point Blank soon.
Really underrated band, one of the very best Southern Rock bands for me, along with Blackfoot! I have only two of their records, but I plan to buy the others.

Loved Rusty Burns guitar playing! So underrated!
Saw these guys back up the Nuge and was a fan ever since.
Got to see them on a double bill with Mothers Finest. Gonna say '79. Had forgotten all about it. Thanks for the flashback
Curious your thoughts on Ozark Mountain Daredevils? Got a couple of their albums I really like.
Did NOT heard of Point Blank until "American Exce$$" in 1981 & the song "Nicole".
I always considered them a 1 hit wonder.
"American Exce$$" & "On A Roll" as well as "Best Of" are on iTunes!! Their second for Arista (1977) is missing a song on iTunes!! The other 3 for MCA are missing from iTunes!!!
My mistake!! Their debut for Arista in 1976 is NOT on iTunes. Their first 2 for MCA (1978 & 1979) also NOT available on iTunes either!!
These guys opened for journey in 1981
Yeah they played highway star
Thank you for Ranking the Studio Albums: Point Blank🎤🎸🎵🥁
Had their first 2 albums, great albums. I think I was the only one up here in Canada that was listening to them.
They played at the El Mocambo in Toronto around 79-80. Saw them live.
What a knock out show. Glad I got to see them in their prime. ❤
Here are my top 5
1. Second
2. Point Blank
3. Airplay
4. The Hard Way
5. Fight On
I remember hearing Lone star fool on the radio: great. The only PB album I could find at the time was On a roll ... and that was it. Bit like Head East. I heard when i get ready live, bought another album and the band sounded completely different.

Bought this Lp in 1980ish for 10p!!!! Have loved Stars and Scars ever since.
Have been a long time fan of this band. Saw them a couple times in the early days. The first 2 albums were the best of southern raunch and roll.
Saw them open for Molly Hatchet and AC/DC on their Highway to Hell tour… Point Blank ripped it up really heavy guitars tight 30 minute set! Great topic Pete!
Penthouse Pauper from the fantastic Airplay album is pure fire, amazing riffs and solos.
Any chance of ranking Blind Guardian? I don't think you tackled them yet.
Penthouse Pauper is the only song of theirs I'd ever heard until a few years ago, so wjhile I handt heard anyhting else bh tem I was aware of teh name. Worth checking out band called the quaker city night hawks got that southern rock thing going on.
Blackhorse & Chain Lightning were both one LP Southern Rock Bands. And very good.
I saw them open for ZZ Top 2 times and both times they were the better band
Love these southern rock vids. Thanks Pete.(,Marshall Tucker,CDB,Potliquer,Hydra,Blackfoot,Outlaws,)just some suggestions 🙂
1) Point Blank
2) Second Season

Pete do you like drivin cryin? Just wondering love the channel watch alot found dream theater and symphony x here
Their second album for Arista (& Pete's # 1) went nowhere on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts. They signed with MCA in 1978.
Their 5 out of the 6 charted albums (Billboard Top 200 Album Charts) including their highest "American Exce$$" went to # 80 in August of 1981.

Point Blank and Second Season are their best
@dvaoa2910 correct Bill Ham screwed these guys over big time Rusty told me a lot more about that. Point Blank will always be my favorite Texas band
Rusty Burns a Great Axe Man.
Talking about southern rock: what about Blackberry Smoke ?
ARS....sweet.
you listen to ac/dc new single shot in the dark?
Interesting about these second tier bands it’s always they sound like Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet, 38 Special, ZZ Top, etc. Never a definitive original sound. I don't think I'm gonna go there...that stuff is HORRENDOUS
Have you heard of a compilation called " GOLDEN THROATS" ? It is the " Best" of thee worst.
@@jimfritz9503 Sometimes it's fun to listen to the worst -- thanks for the tip!
I seen them open up for the Allman Brothers and they stole the show
epic band.. vocals, strings up side down.. That DP cover is better than DP.. haha. They had it all..
.38 special ranking if you haven’t done it already
Their version of Highway star isnt country rock LOL No shuffle beat or chicken pickin LOL Other than the better soloing, it's no different than the original. Those guitarists and keyboard player do a better job than Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore.
