The beauty of music is that everyone hears things differently…. IMO Dying Surfer is a masterpiece of an album. Just so good. Has always been my favorite of theirs.
This is easiest the greatest band you have led me to. My god what a monster of a guitarist. Crushing rhythmic bass, great vocals, groove ridden drummer, poetic, dirty, slick - excellent stuff. Cheers Pete….🤟
Probably my favorite band from the last 20 years. When I saw them this past spring, Parks and introduced them as “a heavy metal band from Nashville, TN”. I wouldn’t label them heavy metal band, but Parks did on at least one occasion.
My list would be: Dying Surfer meets his Maker Sleeping through the War Lightning at the Door Nothing as the Ideal Mother Electricity ATW Seeing King Buffalo this Friday. Excited. Happy to see you review their albums!
I thought I was disappointed by Dying Surfer at the time, but it's my top rated apparently. Will have to re-think! Their 2012 debut was on Elektrohasch, Colour Haze's label. I just reviewed their new album, Sacred, which is amazing. Also check out ATW's monthly singles released on the last Friday of every month, starting with the sprawling 11:14 "Blacksnake Blues," and the 17:59 "Acid Face." They will probably be released next year as Baker's Dozen. Dying Surfer Meets His Maker (New West, 2015) Lightning At The Door (New West, 2013) Nothing As the Ideal (New West, 2020) Sleeping Through The War (New West, 2017) Our Mother Electricity (Elektrohasch, 2012) ATW (New West, 2018)
Thanks for this awesome news (ALL is a top 5 all-time album for me)! I didn't realize the CH was out now. It's great to see them finally join Bandcamp as well.
I consider the Baker's Dozen a album in itself. And as such it is my favourite. I have Sleeping through the war and Nothing as the ideal in Vinyl form and their are beautiful.
Bakers dozen is solid ive played the shit out of it. But my go to will always be my introduction to them our mother electricity. Elk.blood.heart hook lined and sinkered me lol.
Great to see some love for ATW! I discovered the band on their debut as I buy everything Elektrohasch Records puts out… Dying Surfer would be my fav and the remaining 5 tied for 2nd, which the order could change daily. I think they are one of the best newer USA bands out there. Fantastic live too.
I only discovered them very recently but already they're one of my favourite bands ever. What I have found though is that Live on the Internet is unquestionably my favourite if I had to rank their albums, I enjoy watching their live concerts on youtube far more than listening to their albums, the vocals seem clearer on the live stuff to me? Really love both KEXP sessions and also Live at The Vogue, Indianapolis and Live at AB - Ancienne Belgique are both fantastic concerts with good audio & video.
Hey Pete. First of all, I'm thanking the heavens for our current series of picks (back to school month). I already own almost all of your picks. It's giving me the opportunity to catch up a little on the last series of picks, must hear bands of the 21st century. I'm soaking it in like crazy. I'm now working on bands on your honorable mentions list and am up to All Them Witches. I just listened to their album "Nothing As The Idea". It's mesmerizing. I don't do drugs and I don't get stoned. This album makes me think ahhh, thats too bad, because it would be fun to listen to music like this and not be altogether straight.
Long time watcher, first time commenter. Love your suggestions in general, and I've discovered a bunch of new and old bands thanks to you, so.... thanks! ATW is hands down easily one of my favorite bands of the last decade, beaten only by the greatest band of the last decade, King Buffalo. I find it really hard to rank albums, but putting Dying Surfer last is.... well.... surprising to say the least. Top 3 all day for me. Regardless, love your content - keep up the good stuff, Pete.
I'm a new fan of ATW and your video was very helpful. So far I am finding that they really shine on live recordings. The Live from the Internet album is great, despite not being in front of an audience. I also really enjoy a digital only live album of theirs called "Live in Brussels." Some of the songs from albums like Dying Surfer take on a whole new life on the live recording.
I recently discovered these guys,?as we talked about Pete. To me, they have a Doors vibe to them. They have fuzzed out, Flanger guitars and heavy, tube distorted bass. I dig them.
Easily one of my favorite bands right now. So many different sounds from these guys. You can hear Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, The Doors, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Kyuss, Verve, sometimes all in one song. They just don’t disappoint. They have such a broad spectrum. If anyone is looking for an album that displays all of their styles, I would suggest to listen to the “Live on the Internet.” Granted, there are no keyboards in that recording, but this can give you a little taste of all styles. One could take a deep dive from there.
Thanks so much Pete! These guys are one of my favorites. I'm so glad you found out about them. Now you just need to check out KOYO (UK) and Mother's Cake (Austria.). To me, those are the three best current rock bands. Thank again!!! Cheers.
Have you seen them live Pete? That is where they shine. I’m sure you have become quite the label guy by reviewing so much . I like to feel and their albums feel good
I bought dying surfer meets his maker album immediately when I saw a new album was about to be released, live stream from RUclips are fantastic, cheers 🥂!
1. Lightning at the Door 2. Sleeping Through The War 3. ATW 4. Dying Surfer Meets His Maker 5. Nothing As The Ideal 6. Our Mother Electricity 3 through 5 can switch positions depending on my mood. Baker's Dozen would be up there is it was an album.
Agree to disagree ‘Rats in Ruin’ is an album highlight IMHO. True, it’s long, but it’s a journey with a great payoff with the epic haunting soloing at the end.
So great to see this band in the SoT channel! Pete, are you keeping up with the Baker’s Dozen project they are doing? No physical release yet (hopefully someday), but a number of really good songs so far.
So hard to pin this band down as you can see from everyone's rankings being all over the place. They are really great, the sort of band you appreciate more as you listen more. Songs like Alabaster and See you Next Fall, stay with you a long time. They pull in the Doors, Tragically Hip, Black Sabbath, Floyd, and turn it into something really original. The worst thing about them is whoever is doing their vinyl pressings. Pretty shaky quality. 1. Sleeping through the War 2. ATW 3. Dying Surfer meets his Maker 4. Nothing as the Ideal 4. Lightning at the Door 5. Mother Electricity
I own zero. But, I’m always eager to learn. Actually, GEORGE has me in Hall of FAME as a student, lol. And GEORGE knows”! Thx for this PETE, I will check out 👍💯
Oh Pete this time don’t agree…dying surfer is a masterpiece…mystical and acoustic and blood and sand is great… pls check the version they play at kexp show…do you still think it’s mediocre or mellow? Don‘t think so 😊 overall you are a bit rushing through the video here
i stop following them after the fourth album. They make fantastic music but i have the same problem with their records. They're all over the place. I never seem to get into them as a whole album and never play them because of that. Seen them live one time and they were really good.
I get it. You were stretching on trying to figure out why Alan took a hiatus but Covid didn’t really disrupt in the states until March of 2020. Kind of hard to take anyone seriously when they can’t even get the small facts right.

Awesome live band and really cool guys too.

It's interesting how varied all the lists are.
@@MrSmith0128 I guess some of their albums have a certain mood/vibe to them.
One of my favorite psychedelic bands with blues that hits all the right spots!

Agree with your list
Almost agree with your list. Just switch Sleeping Through The War and Our Mother Electricity ;)

Good band. I’ve described them as the heaviest mellow band or the mellowest heavy band out there.
No labels is the best label

The Rhodes piano with guitar pedal effects is a nice addition as well.

Would still love to see an Anathema ranking with Mr. Franco.

1. Lightning at the Door
2. Sleeping Through The War
3. ATW
4. Dying Surfer Meets His Maker
5. Nothing As The Ideal
6. Our Mother Electricity
3 through 5 can switch positions depending on my mood.
Baker's Dozen would be up there is it was an album.
Great great american newer band! My favorite album is Lighting at the door, bur Our Mother electricity is a close second for me. Greetings from Chile!
Cool Band!!
Good choice Pete!!
Live on The Internet is a good place to start with them.
Another one to check out, cheers Pete!
Ah dude, Dying Surfer-I saw someone else say it: mystical is the word.
Cool Pete. For me they are one long song. Love the movie they lay out
My list:

ATW
Lightening at the Door
Nothing as the Ideal
Sleeping
Mother Electricity
1) Lightning at the Door
2) Nothing as the Ideal
3) Sleeping Through the War
4) ATW

Pete I've never heard of this band, will check them out tomorrow. What about doing a Steven Wilson ranking the albums show?
Awesome shirt!
Agree to disagree ‘Rats in Ruin’ is an album highlight IMHO. True, it’s long, but it’s a journey with a great payoff with the epic haunting soloing at the end.
Definitely agree. It’s really not even that long. It’s a beautiful song with great melody and dynamics. Caught me right away
The song ain't long enough for me. I could listen to another 20 minutes of that incredible guitar and feedback ending.
Yeah, that ending fucks me up in the best possible way. Love, love, love it
ATW Guitarist Ben McLeod is lead guitar on our record, first single out now: ruclips.net/video/Da68oC1pOZU/видео.html
I really like "Dying Surfer", but as you say "we all hear things differently". Thanks for the ranking.
So great to see this band in the SoT channel! Pete, are you keeping up with the Baker’s Dozen project they are doing? No physical release yet (hopefully someday), but a number of really good songs so far.
I too find most of their albums spotty. That's why I never went "all in" on their discography. But what I like, I like a lot.
Great band!
Great band
I would suggest "Live On the Internet" as a good primer for those new to the band.

4. Nothing as the Ideal

I think they're at their best live. It's a bit old but the Rockpalast concert is great
The ranking always depends on my mood,
but in the end they're all good.
I own zero. But, I’m always eager to learn. Actually, GEORGE has me in Hall of FAME as a student, lol. And GEORGE knows”! Thx for this PETE, I will check out 👍💯
All Them Witches...reminds me o' a book from the film Rosemary's Baby...All Them Witches.
They say they got their name from that movie.
That is a close shave you got there!
you should check out Jack Rider Presents
Look into Canadian Prog/Thrash band Varga. They're worth a look.
Oh Pete this time don’t agree…dying surfer is a masterpiece…mystical and acoustic and blood and sand is great… pls check the version they play at kexp show…do you still think it’s mediocre or mellow? Don‘t think so 😊 overall you are a bit rushing through the video here
Nearly 25 minutes, just me, and only 6 albums...don't think I rushed at all.
First ATW song I heard was cover of "Voodoo Chile" on a JH tribute CD. Thought it was really great. Not on any of their albums.
ATW
Sleeping through the war
Lightning at the door
Dying Surfer
Nothing as the Ideal
Our Mother Electricity

And I did say “maybe”…he was gone from 2019 to 2021. It’s not impossible. Anyway, who cares. This show is all about the albums.
He just went to finish his education and came back after
