Adding my 2 cents as an owner of both types of boots. I feel like it's tough to compare these because they're in 2 different price brackets. I use my Captains in dressy situations (NOT a suit); my IRs for everything else. If you are an owner of both styles, you know which one is better made. It then just becomes a matter of when you wear each style. Captains are a fantastic entry into the boot world and can be dressed up; the IR are the workhorse, the 'gold standard' for no-nonsense boot people like me. Bottom line: invest in both pairs, but use them for different events. With the Captains, I feel sleek and stylish. With the IRs, I feel secure, safe, and invincible. Great video, as always.
Super solid breakdown---and if I didn't basically destroy my Captains by wearing them in the worst conditions for 3 years, I'd also be saving them for more dressy occasions.
@@Clarc115 , at least half size SMALLER than your shoe size. Probably one full size, really. Wear them inside the house for one day so you can return them with no problems if they’re too big/small. Don’t take them outside initially.
It's because of videos like these that I just ordered my 1st pair of "nice" boots, the Thursday Captains. I'm in Canada so they came in just under $300. I also ordered a cedar shoe tree to keep them in proper shape. I'm really looking forward to years of stylish use, I love the casual and/or dress appeal of these boots. Keep up the great content, much appreciated.
Thanks for your feedback! The Captain looks really great for 2 years of wear - just needs a resole. It may have been a fairer comparison of durability if you wore the Redwings for two years as well but still glad to see you love the Captain for its versatility and comfort :)
@@BootSpy True. Thursday boots are kind've like the gateway drug into boot addiction. So they deserve special credit there. And a lot of that is their fashion sense and price, which enables it to be so approachable for a lot of guys who are boot fence sitters. It's hard to go from a non-boot guy to a $329 casual wear only Iron Ranger. You kind of need that stepping stone that is Thursday's $199 dressy/casual night out on the town boot.
@@deepstarsix 100%-- I think you nailed it here. I mean, that was my experience with Thursday. I was wearing crappy $100 boots and took the leap to $200 because the Captain and I've seen the light. Thank you so much for watching and commenting---I really appreciate it!
I live here in St. Paul, MN, less than an hour from Red Wing, MN. I’ve tried Iron Rangers, Beckman, Merchant and Blacksmith boots. They are excellent, but a couple key points. Red Wings will *never* be as comfortable as Thursday boots because of the hard insole. I also have what could be referred to as “low volume” feet, meaning they aren’t as thick in the middle of the foot bone. Red Wings are very high volume boots, meaning that they have so much room at the instep and the toe box, I have to use an insole to make them fit. Also, I have 3 Thursday boots and they are all extremely consistent quality. Red Wing vary a LOT from boot to boot. Sometimes the right and left are different heights, different widths, different lengths. I’ve had Red Wing “Factory 2nds” that were seemingly perfect, and full priced Red Wings that had clear differences between the right and left, crooked stitching, etc. Such is the nature of handmade boots, but in my experience, the Thursday craftsmanship is more consistent, and they are more comfortable and a better fit for my feet, as much as I want to love my local company...
You mentioned the Red Wing heal is cemented on, they aren’t. They may have cement in there but they are nailed on, which is why they have the sock liner over the heal on the footbed. They do this so you can replace the heal without needing to resolve the entire boot.
Important question! Is your size the same in both brands? Great analysis! Seems fair and correct based on my experience of the brands. If you want a work-boot that can handle some hiking, go red wing. If you want a nice-looking boot that can still handle a long walk in civilised surroundings, go Thursday.
Like you said style is subjective ,other factors like thickness of leather used, proper cork midsole and overall quality of construction is completely objective. So in my analysis the Red Wing iron rangers win hands down and I can tell by experience that there's no comparison between the two . The closest pair of boots to the iron rangers ( in terms of quality of construction) are the Wolverine 1000 miles Evans boots . You really do get what you pay for.
I'm working on getting me some Wolverine 1000 mile as we speak! I hope to get that showdown together soon too! Thank you for watching and commenting--I really appreciate it!
BootSpy depends on what they want, if the want a more versatile and durable shoe then get the red wing, if they want more comfort out of the box then the Thursday
@@charlesbronson240 Nice-- I disagree a bit on the versatility--I think the Captain is more versatile from a style perspective, but it's pretty much splitting hairs. Thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate it!
@@BootSpy Red Wing. Recommend them to save up a little bit more and get an Iron Ranger or Blacksmith. I own a couple of Thursday boots. Their leather just doesn't age well, and not worth the price imo.
I don't know why these style boots always come with such shitty outsole with such bad grip. If you want to hike with these and not slip you need treads on the heel too. Jesus
Redwing for me only because of the tongue. Thursday’s tongue moves left or right while in use this gets very annoying!!! This is actually a huge factor and makes the Thursday loose all 3 points for me
This is my problem with Thursday boots as well. I want to like them more than my iron rangers.... but the tongue slides down constantly on my Thursday’s which makes me never want to wear them.
To go around the “clown shoes” effect of IR. I have to go down multiple size lower. Breaking in was a hell but after 4 years it was a perfect snug fit.
Damn I knew IR's Reminded me of something "Clown Shoes" :o/ I want to like them, but something about that rounded off tow cap that throws me off, but at same time look kool with jeans, For that Reason I may just settle on BlackSmith. They also look kool with Jeans and can be dressed up as well as be a workhorse.
Well I will be honest, they dont look like clown shoes after seeing them in person. They will look like clown shoes after a size 10.5 or 11. At least to me once the shoe gets to big, they do look a bit funny, because these shoes run big a size 10.5 looks like an 11.5. I actually picked up two pairs of Iron Rangers, Color Amber Harness and Oxblood Mesa. They look really nice with Jeans or Chino Style Cotton Pants.
Got myself a pair of Iron Rangers last week and I've noticed I look forward to going outside more just to wear them again. I've been looking at Thursday boots as well as Oliver Cabell SB1, but Thursday don't offer shipping to my country and I had doubts about Oliver Cabell sizing so when I found a guy selling a pair of brand new Iron Rangers for around 240 USD (the normally sell for around 500 USD in my country) I realized what a steal it was and bought them immediately. What an amazing pair of boots!
I got my first pair of iron rangers yesterday and today I wore them most of the day while I was digging up my parents septic tank and you are 100% correct about the first time you wear your iron rangers because I think her quote was something like “ The first time you where are rangers they will eff you up”....you’re damn right!
It's also kinda hard to award points for cost, as the Captains are made in Mexico and the IRs are all-American made. Outsourcing work to Mexico or Asia will always be beneficial to the consumer and to the company itself. Again, I think these 2 types of boots shouldn't really be comparable....think of putting head-to-head a Honda Civic or Accord with a Land Rover Defender and comparing/contrasting their features. Two different uses, really. But neither a lemon or dud.
I was going to make the exact same analogy with the cars! The use case for boots like these two should be quite different. Can you use a Land Rover as your daily driver? Of course you can. But the Honda Civic is gonna be able to drive you to work and get groceries just as easily as a Land Rover or a pick up (if we wanna keep things 'Merican). Hell, it's probably gonna be better using the Civic to do this. But are you gonna take your Civic off the highway? ABSOLUTELY NOT! That's something you can do with a Land Rover/Truck. Even comparing the price points of a Civic, to a general pick up truck, the same thing happens. Where I live, a crew cab Silverado starts at $38,000 and a Civic around $20,000. Given specific use cases, the Civic could even outlast the chevy. The same can be said for these two boots. Are you looking for a pair of big, bulky shit kickers that you're not gonna worry about effing up when you're doing yardwork and working on your truck? Buy some Iron Rangers. Do you want a pair of slim, sleek boots that are gonna look great for a night out on the town or even in a business casual setting? Buy some Thursday's! They're gonna more than fit the bill. They're likely to be comfortable right out the box, with that Poron/EVA insole/midsole action. Thursday's, in most colorways, are gonna look great with chino's, a nice shirt and a blazer. Iron Rangers might make for too garish of a contrast in that situation. Although, there are people that have pulled it off to varying success.
It's funny you mention Civics and Land Rovers---I own the most raggedy Civic in NC. It looks about as beat up as my Thursdays. But I like your analogy---definitely different uses. And the made in USA stamp is more meaningful to some folks than others. Thank you again for watching!
BootSpy it’s funny some people care about American made when we buy 90% stuff from overseas and why is it bad non American made boots . I mean 200 dollars for a boot is a steal
First of all, I wanna say, especially with how new your channel is, the production quality on this vid, the lighting, sound design is great! And you sound pretty comfortable in front of the cam! So keep that shit up man! Second of all, while I am generally tired of the comparisons between Thursday and the Iron Rangers (given different use cases), this video was generally well done and well explained. It wasn't overly biased in any regard and offered some good advice on care, etc. And while it might be argued the 3-3 tie is a little bit of a hackneyed result to this "boot battle" I'm glad that you ended up actually picking something in the end. Regardless of what you picked, I'm happy. Outside of how rough and tough these two boots are, you have to have a largely different style for each of them. If you're used to wearing more relaxed fit jeans, have a more rugged/outdoor type look, the IR is probably where you're leaning! While I have IRs and I don't have Thursday's, I'm really thinkin' about them Vanguards in Indigo! I work in an office (or at home) so I don't need some giant, heavy, rugged boot, day to day. It doesn't really work great driving my 6 speed, and I'm not on my feet enough to worry about how "durable" an insole is gonna be and if it will wear out and be uncomfortable. I'd rather it be mostly comfortable out of the box. And I'm not walking 10 miles on concrete every day so the soles are likely to last a while, regardless. And, honestly, it seems like Thursday is only making their boots better in the past couple years. Plus, between my IRs and Allen Edmonds Surrey Cap Toe, I have the rugged boot category pretty filled! And some more sleek boots would serve me better! Keep up the solid work man, your videos are great!
Totally agree with you on the two different styles. The Vanguards are definitely the most interesting Thursday boot to me now. And I gotta get me some of those Allen Edmonds--those are fine looking boots! Thank you again for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
I can vouch for the Thursday Vanguard in Indigo. The color and leather is gorgeous! Pretty good boot for the price, but if you wear them all the time (like I do), they'll wear out much faster than the Iron Ranger. Sure, they have a great patina already, but also the leather heel is beginning to split a little, so I'll need to get them cemented and nailed by a cobbler before I need a resole. Still, gorgeous boots that are very comfortable due to the poron lining in the footbed.
@@thejonathandoan Oh, 110%. I think, for quite some time, I've been biased by a lot of the people I interact with, that all own boots at significantly higher price points than Thursday. And while the marketing from these guys is a little over blown, the more and more I think about it, the more and more I realize that, for the price, it's a completely satisfactory boot. And the fact that they're quite a bit lower in price (before any discounts from other brands) means I'm probably less likely to worry about beating em up a bit. Another positive, living in Canada, is that I can get them on Amazon and have free shipping and returns. The shipping from TBC direct is even free, so I absolutely guarantee I'll be trying some of their boots, probably with a Stormking Outsole, in the very near future.
I never understood the whole 1/2 size smaller argument, I have everything from the Vibergs, whites, Alden’s, nicks, Grant Stone, red wing, Thursday, etc etc etc (37 pairs in total, I have a problem) to the bargain basement 50 - 60 dollar boots that fall apart in a year ( I just love new things) and I always go true to size 12 Wide (E) and they fit perfect even after 10+ years of use (Red Wing Moc toe and multiple pairs of whites) and even some true abuse back when I worked for Calfire. I don’t know if maybe the width of my foot makes the difference but if I go 11.5 then I’m in pain with my foot crunched up even after months of use and being well past the break in period. I think to say always size 1/2 or a whole size down is just inaccurate because what works for 1 person may not work for another and vice versa. Just my two cents -Red-
I have no horse in this race as I love both styles, but I do think as far as price is concerned, the Captain is made in Mexico, Iron Ranger is made in the USA. For dollar amount alone, you're right, but it isn't a complete apples to apples comparison. If you look at the Thursday "made in the USA" styles of boots, you're right in the $300 price range as well. Anyway, just found your channel last night and have been enjoying your videos, keep it up!
I didn't know the Thursdays were made in Mexico, thanks for the heads up. To me that's reason enough to buy the Iron Rangers. If we don't vote with our wallets, sooner or later there will be no domestic boot industry left at all and we will have no other option but to wear cheap imported crap.
Thursdays are a great gateway to Goodyear welted boots. Once you buy a pair, you start looking at other brands, and how they, too, could make you feel like the bad guy in a movie.
As owner of both, I would absolutely take my Iron Rangers. No debate. Although one can argue the Captains are a little more versatile, the Iron Rangers are made so damn well. I have the very underrated black IR’s and they look amazing. I just love my IR’s more when it comes down to it. They are an American icon for a reason. Phenomenal boots.
So, you know, and I think this is an interesting story. Red Wing did not continuously make the Iron Ranger through the entire time from the mining days to present. They did act as a major provider of boots for military during 20th century wars, and always have made work boots of very high quality. They now have several subsidiaries which make these. They branched out into this hybrid type (work and casual type) in the 1970's. In my opinion Red Wing may well be the greatest American footwear company, but of course it has great competition too. That's kinda what America is all about. I'm subbing. I think you are diligent and have great potential here. The Iron Ranger model was a loving recreation of essentially the exact type of boot used by Iron Range miners, but it arose from the efforts of a Japanese designer in the 1970 s, and became a phenomena, partly, or initially, because of the amazing trend among Japanese consumers for retro gear of this type (it took hold all over the world basically). This has been going on in Japan for decades. They are big consumers of WW II style gear (A2 leather flight jackets; WW II service shoes from U.S. military design for soldiers) and also of old fashioned denim and "silkie" aloha shirts, or western wear or leather jackets from the 1950's. They sometimes call this type of fashion "Urahara fashion". It combines vintage items with casual street wear and has high fashion providers, and many stores both brick and mortar and online). John Lofgren boots may well be a good example. The design was perfect for Red Wing which decided to create a retro / "classic" line in the 1970's and completed setting this up by the 1990s. The Iron Ranger became the most popular overall within this line and probably because it so carefully followed design of work boots for miners. This product group also included at one time or another a model (I have one) called "Blacksmith" (very similar to an IR, without the toe cap), another called Beckman (in honor of Red Wing founder and boot maker), which is now discontinued (it looks a bit more expensive to make, but is very similar to the Blacksmith with no speed hooks, and a multi part sole. Stridewise has mentioned this in his blog: stridewise.com/red-wing-boot-japan/ I'm not sure right now if this is the original guy, or a spiritual follower, but here is one of the key Heritage Line designers: www.redwingshoes.com/heritage-stories/stories-aki-iwasaki.html Mr. Iwasaki is following this path, where a loving examination of classic boot making is used to produce an amazing modern retro design. Aki says he likes design of the leather itself, which makes Red Wing perfect for him since they have an in-house tannery. I think one area where this Japan/America fashion trend may be found and which may eventually take flight in footwear is in the WW II boot designs (they are similar to RW heritage designs and therefore are both rugged and comfortable - they often use a last called Munson last, named after a doctor who designed an orthopedic design for footwear for U.S. military). The Munson last basically has a noticeably larger toe box which allows the toes to splay during the down stroke of the step action: www.usww2uniforms.com/9-6F.html and www.atthefront.com/WWII-USMC-Boondocker-Boots-p/usfnfb.htm I understand the latter is for re-enactors (At the Front has many bits of WW II garb and kit) and the boot is usually made by American companies to exact WW II spec to the extent possible today. There are both reverse leather (boondocker) and conventional leather models. The reverse leather model, or boondocker, was stipulated for "field" personnel and was sent supplied with a waterproofing compound called "Dubbing". The inner part of the leather (now on the outside) was to be soaked by the soldier with this compound, thus making the boots highly water resistant (a plus in warfare where soldiers do not have time to fuss with wet boots). You will see this type of reverse leather old fashioned boot on the feet of many soldiers in WW II photos. Many hundreds of thousands of these were made, and they still can be found in collections today. With the dubbing, the leather seems to survive well. I see even Ralph Lauren now has made a "boondocker" boot, so that is partly why I think this may be taking off. www.ralphlauren.com/men-footwear-shoes/boondock-suede-boot/305592.html You can probably tell I got sort of deep into this stuff. I still have not purchased boondockers or any WW II design, but do have several heritage type boots (3 are RW, one is Thursday, and one is Allen Edmonds, one of those great competitors) and an A2 flight jacket. They are very rugged, are comfortable, supportive and functional, and go well with many casual styles one could wear. I can sure understand why the Japanese love these styles. It's very much a nod to our forefathers who really did have some great ideas around footwear and clothing.
This has to go down as the best comment in RUclips history. Seriously, so much detail and I learned a ton. How often can you say a RUclips comment was a good read? That's awesome. Thank you so much for the background, Chris. I really appreciate your support---it means a lot! -William
Well I'm from Germany, where there's no significant price difference between Red Wing and Thursday boots. Locally, Red Wing Iron Rangers are priced at 379 euros. On the other hand, Thursday boots are available on Amazon for 319 euros, but with an additional delivery fee of 24 euros, bringing the total to 343 euros. If ordered directly from the US, including tax and delivery, the cost is around 320 euros. Given these considerations, for those in Europe, the Iron Ranger seems like a more sensible choice. It offers greater value, especially when factoring in the convenience and quality associated with the brand
You should do a video on the Grant Stone Diesel's vs the GS Ottawa's. I would love to watch a video like that because I wonder what your opinion is regarding the two boots. I have the Ottawa's because I like the fact they look like the Alden Tankers. The NST is super unique and I love them what they are. They are an alternative to AE and at the same level as Alden's.
I have redwings and Thursdays. About 8 months ago I needed a safety boot. I ended up with a composite toe….Irish Setter. These are without comparison the most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn.
What's up, nice vid. Bro, I would like to ask if the Captain and Iron Ranger have the same size. I have a Captain size 10 and I would like to buy the Ironranger on-line. Will it be the same or I have to adjust. tia
Red Wing Iron Rangers where standard issue when I went through United States NAVY Boot. I spent a lot of hard days getting to know those boots...and I never liked the way that the boots looked, or felt in training. For that reason I'll never purchase them. Instead I got the Zamberlan Latemer.
The redwing wins all day long. Redwing boots are a right of passage. U have to earn the right by breaking them in . They are made better and look better when u beat them up. If I wanted to buy something a bit more dressy it would not be a online discount boot company that has to pay RUclipsrs to talk nice about them. Thursday boots are fast fashion.
They are cheap made Mexican boots that have synthetic parts. The leather they use is cheap and mass. They used to use a lot chrome XL but they almost stopped using it. Also when they did it was always the cheapest cxl with the thinnest cross section. I have both. If u want a boot that is high quality but not USA made go grant stone or parkhurst.
I guess it makes a video but these boots are aimed at totally different customers and uses. The Red Wing is a work boot and looks it. The Thursday Boot is more of a dress boot. Everything else falls in line. You're comparing apples and oranges, not "quality."
I have the Thursday captain, and Rogue. 3 pairs of iron rangers. Like the look of all. Wear a 10.5 in Thursdays, 10-D in rangers. Disagree that rangers are difficult to wear when new. That was not my experience at all. Maybe because they fit me perfectly. Mid weight socks. Agree that the captain is dressier.
Versatility is relative. A pair of iron rangers can be your only boot working in a trade, and last forever while still looking presentable enough to not bring a change of shoes after work. Those other ones look really nice, but I wouldn’t work in those.
I love the look of the Captains but I'm one of those people who just can't tolerate the narrowness. After half an hour, there's pain. I'm breaking in a pair of new Iron Rangers now and for me at least, they're perfect.
Well boots built with leather footbeds and built unlined - probably wont get stunk up by ones sweaty feet. But if you really want to controll the odor i recommend cedar shoe/boot trees. A side bonus is that the cedar trees will also help maintain the boots shape. If you do decide to use trees, just remember to let your boots air out after wear, before you insert the trees.
Both are really sturdy and last a long time in the heel. I personally prefer the Iron Ranger Vibram to the Storm King---it's just sleeker, though it's much harder and not as shock absorbant. depends on how much walking you're going to do. More walking = storm king
@@BootSpy thank you. Tring to decide which one I'm going to buy. I have 3 or 4 pair of both redwing and Thursday. Leaning towards iron ranger for my everyday work around house/motorcycle/casual boot. Think it might hold up better than the rough out captain boot. Thoughts? Great videos thank you
I don't know about the IR specifically but aren't most redwings made in vietnam, with US leather? Just seems worth pointing out especially since you mention the guy who's had a pair since the 70s when they would've been made in the US
I own a pair of iron rangers and was thinking about buying the captains. However, I'm skeptical of the sizing. Did you get the same size in your IR's and captains? or do they fit differently? I am a size 11 in the IR's btw.
Hi William, you have just popped up in my recomendations(sp). ive had thursday boots captains in the past but found the break in quite bad on my heels. always wanted the iron rangers but after getting the thursdays it has felt like a gamble to try without buying first in terms of getting the correct size. anyways as an australian i have always worn rm williams chelsea boots which have required no break in at all. thanks for the content,
Interesting re: the Captains. Yeah, the Iron Rangers were on my wish list for several years before I finally picked them up. If you normally wear boots with the standard D width, I think you'll be fine getting a half-size down for the Iron Rangers. If you get them on Amazon, you should hopefully be able to return with no hassle. Not sure if the return policy is the same in AUS so maybe check on that before hand. And yeah, I've heard a lot about RM Williams--I definitely want to pick up a pair for a review here! Thank you so much for watching--I really appreciate it!
@@joshandrew90 oh man, great question---so many watches. I'm up around 30 now. A good chunk is Nordgreen, Vincero, Filippo Loreti, UNDONE---Ironically the watch I wear the most right now is my super cheap digital Casio. I love that thing. If you're ever interested in some watch reviews, I occasionally post a review over at our other RUclips channel: ruclips.net/user/TheAdultMan Thank you for taking the time to go through and watch some of the videos I've put up here. I really appreciate it!
While I believe Thursday is really great value for the money... I went with Iron Rangers. The 10.5 D feels like it was made from a last that was made from my feet. They fit so well! I like the more rounded toe, too. The pointy toe is a bit more 'fashion' for me. I still like them and will probably pick up a pair someday!
I don’t know what anyone would be standing on if they disagree with your point on styling the Captain over the Iron Rangers. If you wear the Iron Rangers with anything nicer than a pair of blue jeans you are wrong.
Question for anyone who’s bought a pair of Thursday Captains: the Thursday website says to order a half size down from your sneaker size; however, the sizing of my Iron Rangers makes me unsure about that advice. In sneakers I’m a 10.5, but in my Iron Rangers I’m an 8.5-two sizes down . So, going by the Thursday website’s advice, I’d order a size 10 Captain, but that would mean a big difference in the sizing between Iron Rangers and Captains (which could be true, I don’t know). I asked Thursday and they suggested that I stick with my Iron Ranger size of 8.5, so they’re suggesting that I ignore the advice about dropping a half size given on their website. Thursday was quick with a response to me and they were super friendly, so that’s awesome, but before I order a pair, I wanted to hear from some regular folks who have worn the boots. So, does anyone have any useful info on this? Should I go a half size down from my sneaker size, like the Thursday site suggests, or should I stick to my Iron Ranger size of 8.5 ? Thanks a lot, cheers. (sorry for the long message)
I plaining on buying in the future Iron Rangers I have a pair of the Captions and love them for just waring around the house I'm into a quality boot Redwing has been my choice for 30 years !
Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate it! And, I hear what you're saying. I think it really comes down to the specific person and what they want from their boots. Especially if its their first good quality pair.
For me it's the Redwings, I have the Thursday mock toe but the captains are a little pointy looking for my taste. Then again maybe I just have bad taste lol. Thursday explorers are pretty sweet looking
Iron rangers win in all categories imo. Just my thoughts. I wear them everyday and don’t need another pair of shoes for anything but running. SHTF you got a great boot that would last for a decade unless you intentionally leave them in mud or water. Just a better boot over all
I picked up a set of Thursdays and they fit great. but man, they are so feminine I simply gave them away. Maybe I just wore Iron Rangers too long, but just got mt IR's back from a resole and will stay away from hipster boots from now on. Look like a woman's boot.
This video is just wrong or incredibly biased. The point for the "price" category goes to the cheaper boot because, what a surprise! they are cheaper. To exaggerate but following your logic, if you compare the Thursday and the $100 Amazon boot, the point in that case will go to the Amazon boot, right? . It is also interesting that almost all the subjective categories are going to the Thursday. I get the love that makes you really attached to the Thursday(i.e. sponsorship), but the iron Rangers are in a different level. Much better materials, construction, MIU, proven longevity, quality. Versus a style boot that looks pretty decent, not going to lie, but a tie is just not right.
I was very surprised, thought this was going to be a white wash for the Rangers! I was left thinking that you had got emotionally attached to the Thursday because you’ve had them so long! Looks I guess, are subjective thing of course . The Thursday is probably more versatile like you said, in possibly a more Urban setting, but I find the ranger just such a more substantial better looking boot. With denim, difficult to beat the look of the Iron Ranger, The quality, thickness of the leather , You can see many examples of stunning older Rangers, with awesome patina that develops over the years! I’m trying to think of the word, but I think the Iron Rangers just look a whole lot more impressive. Whereas the Thursday, looks, well, just a like a regular piece of footwear. In my opinion over the lifetime of the boot a couple of weeks of break in is nothing! Price is a point, because everybody has a different budget and my opinion of these boots does not mean the Thursday is a bad boot at all, and certainly great value! People mention Nicks boots, but when you talk about these you are then ramping up to another level so not playing in the same ball park. I’d love a pair, but not been in the position to blow $500+possibly on some boots. One day maybe!
Yeah, I totally here you on Nicks---that's the next tier. Definitely picking up pennies on the ground to save up for those haha. I've had a lot more time in my Iron Rangers now that we're in fall, and I think I'm already just as attached to my Thursdays as I am my Iron Rangers. I still stick with what I said in the review---I think for anyone who's shuffling between the two, Thursday is a slightly better option because of its price and style versatility. That said, I did pick up a pair of IR's instead of getting a 2nd pair of Thursdays, so that says something for itself. It just took me 3 years to get there! Thank you so much for watching and commenting---I really appreciate it!
Your not the first, nor will you be the last to say the Thursday Boots are not make in America, reminding, North America, Central America, and South America are all America. Just Saying. Mexico BTW have some quite skilled artisans when it comes to Boot Making. Did like the finish. I have two pair of Thursday Boots, One pair of Allen Edmonds Alpine.
I have a pair of these Thursday Captains. They're alright at best. Ive worn them maybe 75 times in 2.5 yrs. Getting ready for a date the other night and the speed hooks popped off the boot. Contacted Thursday Boot company to try to get them repaired... Nothing... Crickets. So I hit up their facebook page and they freaking blocked me. Guys spend your $200 with a company who will stand behind their products and back them up. These influencers act like $200 for boots is inexpensive. Guy's, I had to bust my ass and save to buy these boots and this company wont even entertain a conversation about repairing a well kept, very lightly used pair of boots bought from them. I was proud to own them. Now I'm embarrassed to say they took my hard earned $$. I would've gotten better wear from a $50 boot on amazon and recieved the same bad customer service
Have always worn redwing but only as work boots,no way you can use them as everyday wear. Thay look like work boots period! Got a pair of thursdays mainly for the price. One damn good boot, work or play, they do it all! Hate to say it but no more redwings for me.
Comfort should go to the Iron Ranger as they break in, they will ultimately be the winner. The durability justifies the price. You said it, a pair lasting 40 years if not a lifetime. Iron Ranger clear winner.
Disagree. Yes, they mold to your foot and feel like a glove, but the shock absorption on the Iron Rangers is terrible. I've had my Iron Rangers for 18 months, and really want to love them, but the fact is they are the most uncomfortable piece of footwear I have ever owned due to the all of the joint pain caused by banging around with no shock absorption...and that's coming from a guy who has spent years wearing safety toe work boots.
Nah, I had the Thursday’s for a day and sent them back. If I could only have one boot, it would be the IRs. However I did also get the Alan Edmonds Higgins Mill boot and that destroys the Thursday in every way but price.
STOP STOP STOP. Not even close. Nick at Stridewise did this already. You are comparing two totally different boots. That’s like comporting a compact car to a full size truck.
Your winner for price was wrong heck winner altogether was wrong. Lol you have a boot that will last 30+ years and just need a re sole every now and then foe an extra 100-125$ and better quality materials. 100% red qing is the winner. But I guess if your just a hipster ( not saying you are) and want a nice pair to go out and dress like a lumber jack but can't start and electric lawn mower and drink 12$ 4pks of craft beer I question yea go get you a pair of Thursdays your not going to do anything that's going to destroy them unless your pomeranian gets ahold of them. I will day this if I was going out and wanted a nicer looking boot for a special occasion I'd go with the Thursdays actually going to get a pair just for that occasion some instances in my opinion the iron rangers have to much of a rugged look for certain occasions. I consider Thursdays more of a drees/casual boot. Were the iron rangers are more of a everyday boot can be used from anything to work around the yard or shop (depending what kind of shop) to going to the store to the local bar imnnot going to worrie about messing them up like I would Thursdays. But honestly the whole point for 100-125$ and I can go to a local store to get them pluse there going to last decades longer your winner is 100% red wings.
@@BootSpy well I'll be damn I have a pomapoo mix of both, she's an a**hole but cute as hell and funny only dog I've seen actually catch her tail she dont really know what to do with it though when she get it just sits there with the what do I do now look on her face lol
They're definitely that service boot style. For more background, I'll just quote @chris_tune who just left the best comment on this very video: "So, you know, and I think this is an interesting story. I see even Ralph Lauren now has made a "boondocker" boot, so that is partly why I think this may be taking off." Thank you so much for watching---I really appreciate it!
Do you recommend purchasing the IR is your shoe size?
@@Clarc115 , at least half size SMALLER than your shoe size. Probably one full size, really. Wear them inside the house for one day so you can return them with no problems if they’re too big/small. Don’t take them outside initially.
@@Clarc115 If you wear a size 10 in sneakers, get a size 9.5 for the Iron Rangers. I recommend going one half-size smaller than your "true" size
@@Clarc115 You need to go half a size down for iron rangers. I was told to do the same for the Thursday captains, and they were right 🤷♂️
So the answer really is to get the Red Wing Blacksmiths. All the versatility plus the quality. They're also a bit cheaper than the Iron Rangers.
True! Maybe I'll come back in two years and update this-- but yeah, Thursday Captain is a beast. It's the boot that started the obsession.
Good clarification--thank you!
The nails also have small washers with the nails bent over them to stop them pulling out - all 22 of them.
I'm looking forward to the Wolverine 1000 miles review. Cheers and keep the content coming 👍👍👍👍
Red Wing is way more durable and built with better materials but the Thursday is very affordable.
Very fair assessment---if you had to recommend a boot to a friend who was getting his first pair, which brand would you suggest?
This is actually a huge factor and makes the Thursday loose all 3 points for me
Totally makes sense! I haven't had any issues with my Captains doing that, but I've heard a few people mention it.
This is my problem with Thursday boots as well. I want to like them more than my iron rangers.... but the tongue slides down constantly on my Thursday’s which makes me never want to wear them.
To go around the “clown shoes” effect of IR. I have to go down multiple size lower. Breaking in was a hell but after 4 years it was a perfect snug fit.
only 4 years! you got away lucky... thank you for watching!
Damn I knew IR's Reminded me of something "Clown Shoes" :o/
I want to like them, but something about that rounded off tow cap that throws me off, but at same time look kool with jeans, For that Reason I may just settle on BlackSmith. They also look kool with Jeans and can be dressed up as well as be a workhorse.
That's hilarious. Love the commitment!
Hahaha I'm glad that hit home with you
Would you wear the Iron Rangers to work on a "ranch"? Driving tractor, shredding, planting small fields of grass, working with bees, etc.
You have convinced me good sir, I was on the fence for a long time. Captains it is.
glad I could help!
Iron Ranger heels are nailed on and the points bent over washers - all 22 of them. They're not coming off unintentionally.
Also not mentioned, Vanguard not available in wider sizes. Apologies if I missed it in the beginning.
Have you checked out the Jim Green boots?
Just my two cents
-Red-
I have no horse in this race as I love both styles, but I do think as far as price is concerned, the Captain is made in Mexico, Iron Ranger is made in the USA.
They aren’t even comparable. Maybe the thursdays could be compared to the Chippewa boots, but they are way outclassed by the red wings.
No they're not lol.
Red wing = made for work. Thursday boots = style
Sums it up nicely.

Great comparison ! Was conflicted between the two.
I would also recommend a pair of kilties or false tongues. Nick’s boots sells some on their site for about 12$
I went with the Thursday due to my Sasquatch sized feet of 14W is not available in the Redwing!

Stridewise has mentioned this in his blog:
stridewise.com/red-wing-boot-japan/
I'm not sure right now if this is the original guy, or a spiritual follower, but here is one of the key Heritage Line designers:
www.redwingshoes.com/heritage-stories/stories-aki-iwasaki.html
Mr. Iwasaki is following this path, where a loving examination of classic boot making is used to produce an amazing modern retro design. Aki says he likes design of the leather itself, which makes Red Wing perfect for him since they have an in-house tannery. I think one area where this Japan/America fashion trend may be found and which may eventually take flight in footwear is in the WW II boot designs (they are similar to RW heritage designs and therefore are both rugged and comfortable - they often use a last called Munson last, named after a doctor who designed an orthopedic design for footwear for U.S. military). The Munson last basically has a noticeably larger toe box which allows the toes to splay during the down stroke of the step action:
www.usww2uniforms.com/9-6F.html
and
www.atthefront.com/WWII-USMC-Boondocker-Boots-p/usfnfb.htm
I understand the latter is for re-enactors (At the Front has many bits of WW II garb and kit) and the boot is usually made by American companies to exact WW II spec to the extent possible today.

www.ralphlauren.com/men-footwear-shoes/boondock-suede-boot/305592.html
You can probably tell I got sort of deep into this stuff.

Great post!
Interested in the long term comfort point after the Red Wing break in. Squishy comfort vs. molded supportive comfort?
Which one is more comfortable over time? Also…. The clown shoe comment really made me not want IR
What is the name of the color of the Thursday captain here? Thanks. Enjoying the channel.
Will it be the same or I have to adjust. tia
I have a hard time finding boots I wear a size 16 and unfortunately Redwing doesn't make a 16 so far all I found were the Thursdays in size 16

Red Wing Iron Rangers where standard issue when I went through United States NAVY Boot. I spent a lot of hard days getting to know those boots...and I never liked the way that the boots looked, or felt in training. For that reason I'll never purchase them. Instead I got the Zamberlan Latemer.
I just cant get past the bulbous toe on the IR. The RW beckmans are so nice but discontinued here in the US😭
The redwing wins all day long.
You have no idea what you're talking about lol.
Office Style vs Work Longevity
I love the look of the Captains but I'm one of those people who just can't tolerate the narrowness. After half an hour, there's pain. I'm breaking in a pair of new Iron Rangers now and for me at least, they're perfect.
What’s the best method for controlling odor in these type of boots?
Well boots built with leather footbeds and built unlined - probably wont get stunk up by ones sweaty feet. But if you really want to controll the odor i recommend cedar shoe/boot trees. A side bonus is that the cedar trees will also help maintain the boots shape.
If you do decide to use trees, just remember to let your boots air out after wear, before you insert the trees.
Tharification thanks,
Totally agree with Tharification---that's what I do and my boots don't get stanky
I see no bulbous look.
I don't like the sole design of the Thursday at all. I also don't like the pointy toe, I prefer a more masculine work boot style.
How does the captain storm outersole compare with the iron ranger vibram. I tend to go through boot heels fast as I walk wierd
Thoughts? Great videos thank you
You should have show clips of the Thursday when they were new so people could see what they get out of the box and how it looks when it wears
Hi, Can you do a sizing video on the Red Wings IR or Blacksmiths? Trying to buy one online without a physical store from where I am.
Go a half size too even a full size smaller
I don't know about the IR specifically but aren't most redwings made in vietnam, with US leather? Just seems worth pointing out especially since you mention the guy who's had a pair since the 70s when they would've been made in the US
Heritage line is exclusively made in there Minnesota plant. Everything else is outsourced.
I own a pair of iron rangers and was thinking about buying the captains. However, I'm skeptical of the sizing. Did you get the same size in your IR's and captains? or do they fit differently? I am a size 11 in the IR's btw.
I would also get a half-size smaller than true size with Thursdays. So probably an 11 for you. Thanks for watching!
@@BootSpy thanks for the reply!
Great review
Red Wing ❤😊
Better comparison would have been the Iron Ranger vs Thursday Vanguard.
@@BootSpy ive watched a few of your vids now. what watches are part of your collection?
@@joshandrew90 oh man, great question---so many watches. I'm up around 30 now. A good chunk is Nordgreen, Vincero, Filippo Loreti, UNDONE---Ironically the watch I wear the most right now is my super cheap digital Casio. I love that thing. If you're ever interested in some watch reviews, I occasionally post a review over at our other RUclips channel: ruclips.net/user/TheAdultMan
Thank you for taking the time to go through and watch some of the videos I've put up here. I really appreciate it!
Very detailed review. Great job.
Thank you so much for watching and for the love!
Do you think the rangers are naturally wider than the Thursdays
I wear a 10 in most sneakers. I went with a 9 in thursday captains.
I plaining on buying in the future Iron Rangers I have a pair of the Captions and love them for just waring around the house I'm into a quality boot Redwing has been my choice for 30 years !
I would get the Thursday in a different color and keep both.
great minds think alike!
Off-topic but apparently a watch guy. Check out the Bark and Jack channel. You guys have the same intro music.
I'll definitely give them a check---great tip!
That's gay
Good video , I own both and the Redwing Iron Ranger is a much better boot in my opinion .. you can’t compare the quality
Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate it! And, I hear what you're saying. I think it really comes down to the specific person and what they want from their boots. Especially if its their first good quality pair.
BootSpy excellent video !
The iron ranger is $100 us more too though isn't it?
The iron ranger looks too bulky. I cant get past it to even start considering quality etc.
@@adrianr4095 to each his own .. my opinion is I like them
For me it's the Redwings, I have the Thursday mock toe but the captains are a little pointy looking for my taste. Then again maybe I just have bad taste lol. Thursday explorers are pretty sweet looking
You have bad taste
@@Big_AlMC thank you
Iron rangers win in all categories imo. Just my thoughts. I wear them everyday and don’t need another pair of shoes for anything but running. SHTF you got a great boot that would last for a decade unless you intentionally leave them in mud or water. Just a better boot over all
Should’ve compared to the Vanguard. That simple.
I picked up a set of Thursdays and they fit great. but man, they are so feminine I simply gave them away. Maybe I just wore Iron Rangers too long, but just got mt IR's back from a resole and will stay away from hipster boots from now on. Look like a woman's boot.
Lmao. Someone is a little insecure.
Can you buy the Thursday on a Black Friday? That's the million Dollar question there :o)
you'll break the system
Great question.
Did you just call me a hipster?
"for hipsters everywhere"
It's me. I'm the hipster lol
Not a very fair comparison at all. Two years vs 3 weeks.
I like Red wing $329 is little expensive and $199 for Thursday
Your not the first, nor will you be the last to say the Thursday Boots are not make in America, reminding, North America, Central America, and South America are all America. Just Saying. Mexico BTW have some quite skilled artisans when it comes to Boot Making. Did like the finish. I have two pair of Thursday Boots, One pair of Allen Edmonds Alpine.
I have both. Captain is better.
I think there is also value in brand name. Redwings +1
Thursdays are for everyday men and women, and the red wings are for tradeys when on the jobsite
Really should be using the Blacksmith from Red Wing instead. It's more similar in design.
oh, maybe I will, Lee. Maybe I will....subscribe if its REALLY what you want to see. But seriously, it's coming
51 Subscribers?!?! Make it 52
Boom! Done! Thank you so much for watching and subscribing---it means a lot!
2k subscriber in just 4 months?
I'm sorry but those Thursday's look trashed compared to the iron rangers.
Can't compare an apple to an orange.
true! but you can compare one boot to another boot.
I would never consider red wing simply because I think they look ugly lol. I can't get over that bulbous toe!
Comfort should go to the Iron Ranger as they break in, they will ultimately be the winner. The durability justifies the price. You said it, a pair lasting 40 years if not a lifetime. Iron Ranger clear winner.
I'm about 3 months into my IR's now---I still feel the Thursdays are more comfortable, but the IR's are much more comfy than they were previously.
@@Bmoseley85 Get a Spenco flat insole they don't take up much room and make the boots more comfortable if your on your feet all day.
Nah, I had the Thursday’s for a day and sent them back. If I could only have one boot, it would be the IRs. However I did also get the Alan Edmonds Higgins Mill boot and that destroys the Thursday in every way but price.
ooo sounds nice!
Higgins mill are awesome looking but 445?
I would recommend the Red Wing Blacksmith over both of these. The build quality of the iron ranger, but a bit easier to dress up like the Captain’s.
Interesting! I'll be checking out the Blacksmiths soon, actually! Thank you for watching and commenting--I really appreciate it
Jesus loves you.
Lol paid those Thursdays are fucked compared to a boot he returned. That was fake and bullshit lol!!!!!!
Perfect review for guys that use boots to look good with skinny jeans
For hipsters everywhere 😂😂😂
STOP STOP STOP. Not even close. Nick at Stridewise did this already. You are comparing two totally different boots. That’s like comporting a compact car to a full size truck.
the Simpsons did it first
Your winner for price was wrong heck winner altogether was wrong.
My dog is a shih-tzu, not a pomeranian...get your facts straight...
@@BootSpy well I'll be damn I have a pomapoo mix of both, she's an a**hole but cute as hell and funny only dog I've seen actually catch her tail she dont really know what to do with it though when she get it just sits there with the what do I do now look on her face lol
Talking out of the air. Red wing were worn by military???? Lol
They're definitely that service boot style. For more background, I'll just quote @chris_tune who just left the best comment on this very video:
"So, you know, and I think this is an interesting story.
I see even Ralph Lauren now has made a "boondocker" boot, so that is partly why I think this may be taking off."
Thank you so much for watching---I really appreciate it!
Ha ha. Never been to Navy boot camp, I take it. Yer ignorant Jack.
Clean the crud from the sole of the Thursday Captain boot.
Good tip--I'll try that next time. Thanks for watching!
