My Brannock size is 12.5E, but wound up getting an Iron Ranger size 13D as they didn't make 12.5E in black (#8084). Gave my toes a little more breathing room. The 12.5E in the Blacksmith (just for sizing) was too snug. Some may have to go a size UP or stay the same, not down.
Just picked up a pair of Iron Rangers from a RW store in Kenosha 2 days ago. Been wearing them for a few hours a day and getting a good amount of steps in. A little snug at the sides but ample room in the toe box. Love it. No painful issues yet. Beautiful boots.
These have been my work boots for near two years and I've worn them basically into the ground, beat the hell out of them, and with the work I do they've consistently been wet/dry/wet/dry/wet/dry... Leather is still in fantastic shape (deep scratches aside) after the hell I've put them through and they are ready for their first re-sole.
Nice thorough review. Just iconic boots. My experience on the break in was much better. I had heard that these were tough, but did 1-2 hours of wear over the first few days then went to 8+ hours without difficulty. I do tend to wear them every other day though and mix them into my rotation. Keep up the excellent videos!
Nice job! I enjoyed your review very much. It took me about 4 weeks for the initial break in period. Wore these around the house for 1-2-3 hours at a time , short 30 minute walks with the dogs, to the grocery store etc... I do not recommend wearing these all day. You will murder your feet if you do. You have to slowly break these in. After 4 weeks I can now wear my Red Wings comfortably with thick socks and walk around for several hours. No problem. They feel great! Leather has softened. The more you wear them the more comfortable they get. Just do it slowly with patience. The hard leather insoles take a little longer I suppose. They’re not uncomfortable per say but has not quite molded yet. That will take some more time. I went true to size on these because there are no half sizes after 12. Red wing sized me for a 12 but did not have enough room for my toes. They were hitting upfront and that’s not good. I’m a 13 D on the Brannock device and 12.5 would have been perfect. The 13’s eventually loosened around the width as I expected. I tried the red wing orthotics to fill in the void and they felt very comfortable at first but too tight after an hour. So I decided just to wear thick merino wool socks instead and they fit just fine all day. I must say , the red wing orthotics make these extremely comfortable and will also give you a little arch support. It’s a night and day difference. A lot easier break in with orthotics if you get the right ones. But my feet felt too cramped after an hour or so with inserts. Felt like my toes were being squished. My advice is to make sure you have enough wiggle room for your toes. The rest will loosen up if it’s too tight. The leather will not stretch length wise. : ) Besides I’d much rather have the natural leather insoles mold to my feet. So thick socks work much better in my opinion. I went with the Darn Tough socks from Vermont. They offer different styles and thicknesses. Hope the helps for anyone considering getting a pair. They’re great boots and I’m very happy my IR rough n tough charcoal leather. Oh and if you decide to condition these at some point they will darken the leather for sure unless you use Bickmore 4. Most leather conditioners work great and also help soften the leather but they do darken. Keep that in mind.
Love this! You experience sounds pretty similar to mine. And I think that the safest bet for sizing is to just go a half-size down so people don't run into that same issue you did where they recommended a full size down. Thank you for watching!
I have the IR 8111s EE. I was absolutely blown away by the fact that I did not need one minute of break-in. My first day wearing them, I clocked nearly 7 miles walking in them on asphalt and blacktop without any blisters, any issues. Conversely, my Red Wing Weekender Chukkas needed a couple of days of break-in, with a nice huge blister on my left lower Achilles' tendon. But, again....worth it. The Iron Rangers are my sexy beasts. Aside from a suit or dress pants, they go with everything. Definitely raw denim and IRs are THE quintessential look. Great boots. I'll have mine till the day I die.
I applaud your courage committing to a 7 mile walk with new Red Wings!! And yeah, totally agree that raw denim and IR's are the ultimate combo. If they're both new, you're in for a very uncomfortable time haha. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it! How long have you had the IR 8111s?
@@BootSpy , thanks, but really it was one of those things where my day was light and I got to go out and walk around a few times during my work day, then did a nice, long walk in them when I got home. Since they didn't at all bother me I figured, why not. I'm now going on my 3rd year with the 8111s. I live in NC so the weather finally permits me to break them out right about now (September) and use them 'till about April. I have only the 8111s, I just recently got a pair of Red Wing Weekender Chukkas (great pair of warmer weather boots! Highly recommended. I'd love to see you do a review on them in the future and see what you think.), and I have a pair of Thursday Boot Co. Captains. The Captains are pretty ok for the price point--they were my intro to boots. I use them in dressier situations, but the overall quality as compared to the IRs leaves a bit to be desired. But again, for $199, they look really nice, feel great (I got the 11 D size and they feel almost like a EE, so they're perfect for me), and I dig them. Aside from one pair of low top Chuck Taylors, and one pair of dress shoes, these 3 pairs of boots is all I operate with in my life. I love boots all styles and sizes but I would definitely do my homework if I were in the market for another pair, and definitely invest in the higher price points of models. But for me, I'm a regular guy....Red Wing's products are for me. For life, basically.
@@AlexMPruteanu Yeah man, I totally agree with pretty much everything you said. I'm also in NC--Winston-Salem to be specific--definitely loving the cooler weather! And same on my end with the Thursday Captains---they got me started. I remember weighing whether I should get the Red Wings or the Thursdays about three years ago. I went with the Captains, but the Iron Rangers stuck with me. Three years later, I went ahead and picked them up. Super happy with both boots, but Red Wing is definitely on that next level. That said, I still recommend Thursday all the time because they're fantastic. I might get another pair myself!
@@BootSpy Oh wow, my daughter lives in Clemmons and I'm there every other Sunday (bringing her home from my weekends w/her). I live in Raleigh (Cary, really). We should meet up maybe for a drink. Winston is now a great little hip town, well the downtown at least. I think the stuff TBC puts out is definitely nice-looking and quality is definitely worth the price point. I flirted with getting another pair too but... I think I"m staying with Red Wing for basically ever. There are tons of upscale, great boots out there, and some of them I can even afford, but....I don't see the need for me. I know some friends who are boot fiends, with dozens of pairs. Me? I just need my three. And all three can be re-soled, so, I'm thinking these will be it for the rest of my life. Unless they perish in a fire. But I wouldn't put it past the Iron Rangers to actually rise from the ashes and be able to be remade. Ha. Take care and nice meeting you here; one day we should catch a drink downtown Winston.
I just got a pair in rough and tough copper. I heavily treated them with Huberds Show Grease to darken them to a deep rich mahogany. The reason I went with a lighter color is for the crazy contrast in the pullup they get after doing this method. The wear points and creases come out a light reddish orange and the patina they are developing very quickly in these areas due to this treatment is amazing. I cant wait to see how they look after just a few more months, and even more a few years down the road. I will be doing this to some other lighter colored boots down the road and I look forward to the results.
I have the 8025 ruff&tuff copper too. I too conditioned them very heavily. I love the deep shade of copper brown they have now. My 3 werks of breaking in consisted in wearing them only in and around home. Now its about 4 weeks and in the last 2 days i wore them in the city etc 12 hours a day, with a bit thicker worker socks, just in case. No blisters no pain. Only the boot neck is still a bit rough. I always laced them as tight as i can tolerate and they expanded nicely and that tongue crease is nicely flat now.Very happy camper.
Ive got the ones before the 2016 change of the outsole. It's still looking good after 5 years of wear. I really love the look of how many scratches and worn out it becomes after time. These shoes easily lasts 10-20 years
Same here. I love the old outsoles. These boots look like they will last me a lifetime! You do a quick cleaning and it looks almost new with some awesome patina to boot.
Love mine! Went to the Red Wing Store and they fitted me at 11 for regular shoe size and I ended up buying a 9.5. Definitely the best way to buy is in person and have the option to try them on and walk around with them.
I have been wearing the 8085 Iron Rangers for work for the last 2 months while my Nick's Builder Pro's are getting rebuilt. 1. For light duty work they do fine. 2. I have gotten them wet many times and they have not soaked through. 3. They are not made for walking alot on very hard surfaces. I walk between 6 to 8 miles aday and it feels like the cork material is already gone from the ball of my foot. 4. There is no support in the boot of any kind. If you have flat feet you will feel it in your knees and back. I use a Dr Scholls CF440 3/4 orthotic to give me some arch support. These will be going back to casual duty once I get my Nick's back.
Once this boot breaks in though, it is the best feeling to put your foot in it. I've had these for 9 months. Absolutely love them. The break in period sucks no way around it. But, once it does, man, again, best feeling ever.
Nice! I'm looking forward to that day, ha! That's what I've heard--they're already much more comfortable, so I'm psyched about that. Thank you so much for watching!
@@edrader I am an iron worker with 6 pairs and I must say they get comfortable after about 160 hours of wearing the boot. By the time they feel good u need a resole. Which for me is about 2 months. And I work OT like crazy building the LA skyline. I got through new soles in about 2- 3 months
Like you say, I recommend getting then fitted at a Red Wing store. Guys like to talk about how excruciating the break in period is. It doesn’t have to be that way. Don’t cinch them all the way down on day one. Push them a little, and they will give a little. Keep at it. You have to earn the break in. It takes about 40 hours of wearing, but then they will be your most comfortable footwear.
Have two pairs of RWs, these and the Moc Toe. Both are both the most uncomfortable boots I have ever owned and my most loved. The Moc Toe were the worst to break in - many hours in thick socks with the laces only halfway up (ankle rub is a nightmare on both these). For both the insole is a torture device. Even if they “moulded to my feet” they would be thin and unforgiving. On both I have just given in and added insoles, which has changed the experience 100%. The most recommended upgrade. Esp if you buy the Mocs 1/2 a size too big like I did. For the IR I did the same, thick socks, new insoles, regular oiling and half done up laces (leave top hook off) - they are JUST starting to break in after 6 months. They are the best of times, and the worst of times, which is why they last a lifetime and not just for a few years.
OK. Put this in perspective. As a full time soccer player/soccer dad, I EASILY go through a $225-$265 pair of high end, professional cleats in 1 SEASON. Sometimes 2 pairs, one has FG (Firm Ground) studs for dry ground & the other, SG (Soft Ground) metal studs for wet grounds. With the Redwing boots @ $320, which I already own a pair. It’s going little over 3 years now & its looking better than it was brand new. It’s conditioned, supple, everything’s still intact. I love it! So for $320 pair of boots that will last maybe 5 years, 10 years or maybe even more! YES, its worth spending $320.
Good boots are an investment. Do you want to spend $80 every year on a new pair of boots for the rest of your life, or do you want to spend $320 on a pair that will _conservatively_ last you a decade-plus? Even the periodic resoling pays for itself over that stretch.
I think you didn’t do your arithmetic. Red Wing’s site quotes $100 for a resole, with or without a heel replacement. If you assume a resole once/year, you’d be WAY ahead buying $80 boots once/year. If you think you can go 2 years between resoles, then you could probably get two years out of those $80 boots, too. These are fashion boots, with a miserable break-in and a high price tag. But YMMV.
Acting on your very positive review I have just ordered a pair of these boots this evening. Also I’m planning to send my measurements in to Nicks for a pair of boots (haven’t quite decided which yet). I have to admit I’m worried about the Nick’s break-in period. Love all your reviews!
Had Red Wing work boots but IR in Oxblood Mesa my 1st Heritage boot. Broke in wearing around house couple of hours at a time for a couple of weeks before venturing out for long periods. Almost an everyday shoe for over 2 years now (except when south Texas weather demands shorts). Love the leather and feel of the boot, it’s a firm sole but very comfortable to me - and I think they’re a great value.
Just watched this review for the 2nd time. Brought home the 8084, black harness leather, today! Starting the break in process, slowly. Thanks for your advice. I’m 68 & retired so can take my time😎
I had to go with a size and a half smaller. I wear a 12 new balance sneaker to work out in. I had to go with a 10.5 regular width for the right fit. Also I had to watch this video about 3-4 times before I bought these. Love your reviews
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm happy I could help! I have an updated review (after owning these for a full year) coming up soon! Thank you for watching!
My two pair of IR are one whole size down from my regular shoe size. For me the break in time was much less than my RW Moc Toe 1907's. Love the Iron Ranger's.
I think the break in period and amount of pain depends either from person to person or type of leather you choose. The hawthorne muleskinner leather was very comfy from the start and almost no break in period was required. Already on the second day of owning them I was walking 10 km + in them and they were very comfy.
What environment are these boots typically worn in? From your discussion, it sounds like they are urban casual wear, around town and in the office. How about walking on trails in the woods or other overland (i.e. not urban) hikes over uneven and even wet ground? Thanks.
Nice review, I’m also the proud owner of a pair of 8111s. Like you, I sized down half a size, normally a 10.5 got these in a 10, fit perfect. But I have to say hardly any break-in. I did wear them in the house for the first few days, had a slight squeeze but no more than that. I also have Mule Skinner rangers. They was great straight out of the box!
Oh nice! You got away with it haha! And I've heard that about the Mule Skinners. Thank you so much for watching and commenting--I really appreciate it!
Additional consideration for those who are still figuring out their size for these boots, I wear size 8 in Converse sneakers, and I wear size 7 in Iron Ranger. Make sure the ball of your foot sits in the widest part of the boots, which is right in between the toe cap stitching and the vamp. That's where the creases should be. Doesn't matter how much room you have in the toe box. If your foot ball sits under the toe cap, you may end up creasing (and therefore, messing up) the toe cap.
Wow, my experience with the Iron Ranger break in period was really good, I had no blister or sore feet at all. The upper fit me really well, it felt like it was custom built just for my foot, not tight or loose on the heel or vamp area. The only thing I can say negative about the boot is that since there is no midsole, the sole feels harder, not much shock absorption. I plan on remedy that when I resole them by adding a midsole, I am actually looking forward to customizing them in the future, maybe a lug sole and heel with a thick leather midsole or maybe a Dr Sole half sole....decisions decisions...
Maybe psychological but I tried them on last week at the Red Wing store & immediately hated them. They felt like blocks and very stiff. Im used to light sneakers (Brooks) & hiking boots (La Sportiva). Yet I kept them on & kept walking around the store. After about 15 mins. of wearing them, I did not want to take them off. They truly felt awesome & solid. I was like no way, this cant be real. Yet I was sad to take them off but knew it was time to buy them. Its as off the Iron Ranger gods spoke to me. Truly ridiculous I know but they felt amazing in 15 mins. (the correct size for my feet was not in stock & I was wearing a 1/2 size bigger. They should arrive at the store this week & Im stoicly waiting. Calm but super excited in the soul).
I've always wanted a good pair of leather boots but not until recently have I actually started looking. Initially I was going to go with Johnston & Murphy since they were on sale at Nordstrom but I kept looking and then found Thursday and Red Wing. Both looked better than J&M but were way more expensive. However I find myself getting attached Red Wing's Iron Rangers. I kinda really want them now despite the expensive price. Seems like they're high quality boots, they get a lot of praise, and best of all American made. Can't go wrong with that. I think I'm going to go for it.
I just got a pair of these. I honestly dont think you should size down unless you have narrow feet. Its a mistake to size down if you have anything approaching wide feet.
I actaully had to go down a full size on my 8111’s & 8084’s and a full size and a half on my 8085’s (rough & tough leather). I wear size 13 in sneakers (Jordans & Yeezy) and size 12 & 11.5 on Iron Rangers. Now, for me the Iron Rangers are the best Boot in the market. Also, the Blacksmith, 1907’s & 2950’s.
Wear a tight fitting good wool sock. I hardly ever do but when I do I realize that this style of boot is really meant for that. Most of the time I just wear a cotton ankle sock. Its comfortable because I have had mine 4 years. But when I wear a wool sock its a totally different fit. Great video. Subbed
Do you have any recommendations for good wool socks? I've been looking around here and there for a great brand. With winter coming up I'm definitely going to take your advice! Thank you for watching and the support---it means a lot and I really appreciate it! -William
@@BootSpy Lotsa guys swear by the Darn Tough wool socks and won't wear anything else. But I'm not usually that spendy with socks so often get them at Costco. Heck, even Red Wing makes woolen socks that are like half the price of the Darn Tough ones!
@@BootSpy I second Ian on the Costco wool blend hiking socks. Just make sure to never dry them and they will last at least a year. They are what I usually wear with my Iron Rangers.
@@BootSpy I didn’t initially take Red Wing store’s advice to buy their merino wool socks when I bought my IRs - but after purchasing and wearing a pair, I was immediately sold on them. Now own about eight pair, they’ve shown no wear over a couple of years - and still seem absolutely perfect for the boots. I may eventually try another brand, but it’s difficult to imagine any improvement.
Just bought a pair of these and both stores in my area know how the boots fit. Told him I was a 12 D in my king toe work boots buying my pair and he gave me a 12 D and an 11 1/2 D to try, def try these in a half size down. The other store when I was thinking about them told me to size down. I need a wide toe box and these fix great for folks like me.
I didn't notice any blue tint to the leather, but upon closer looking, it is chrome tanned and oil treated. It's still that oil tanned process, but it looks like I must have misspoke if I said this was veg-tanned. Still, given that it goes through a chrome tanning process, it definitely retains a super rich color---none of that cheap blueish tint at all. Thank you so much for watching and commenting--I really appreciate it!
I have a pair of Iron Ranger Hawthorne Muleskinners (roughout) on order from the local RW store. In order to lessen the pain and tears of the Break-In period, would you recommend that I put a little leather conditioner on the inside to soften the leather?
I wear a red wing steel toe for work and after they break in they are super comfortable and durable. Trudging thru mud in the landfill, I never get wet socks! I keep cleaning them and they hold up.
Yrs ago i bought a pr of redwings pull ons, they were miserable nvr got comfortable, I'm reluctant 2 try another pair. I do like the iron rangers though...
I’ve owned those boots, for about a month now. I’m an 11 tennis shoe, and I’m breaking in a pair of size 10’s, with a thin sock. (I also grabbed a pair of 10.5’s to pair with 4ply wool socks). My break in was tough, and I needed to tamp down a spot on the leather foot bed, on the Left boot only, with a large punch and hammer. (I think My left foot is a bit deformed, as I also had trouble with my left 10.5.) I also needed to stuff a folded up paper towel, around one of the ankle areas, (left boot again) to stretch it, with the Amazon cobbler’s choice shoe trees inserted. They are getting super comfortable now, and I’m thinking they are the best I’ve ever owned …
If you are having a tough break in period they likely are the wrong size. I had mine fitted at Red Wing and they were comfortable from the get go. I wear 7.5 or 8 and I got an 8. Perfect!
These seem to be the perfect balance between cost and long term value. I'm looking for the perfect workboot. I'm not against Nick's but I also don't know that my needs will see the $250 difference... Thank you for this review!
Nick’s(and other brands) blow these away as a work boot. I upgraded to a pair of White’s( on sale for $480) because my right arch fell from a lack of arch support after wearing the iron ranger for less than a year. Also keep in mind that the iron ranger will not keep your feet warm at all over the winter so wear thick socks when you go to try them on.
Generally a pair of $150-$250 work boots will suit you better for proper work needs than the Iron Rangers. These are great for going into town or for a simple around the house boot but they lack the proper safety requirements, shock absorption etc... that is needed for a good work boot. The common consensus on the Iron Ranger is that the feel like you're walking on wood and they have some of the worst shock absorption for that price range. It can cause joint problems from repeated jarring shocks through the body and in general will wear out your body quicker which is the opposite of what you want if you plan on remaining in the trade for a long time. To be fair, Red Wing leather is extremely nice so if you want a Red Wing boot alternative something like the Work - Style 2415, 2418, 411 or 405 will do a good job. If you want a heeled version then the Style 202, 953, 402, 2233, 2203, 3508 or 3548 are all good choices. Make sure to check the safety standards of each boot however cause they all meet different requirements. If you don't mind them not being Red Wing but still want a more heritage look then Thorogood is generally a good way to go cause their boots are just flat out better in terms of sole longevity, shock absorption and safety. EDIT: Leaving this here for an explanation on I listed boots that have a wedge sole instead of a heel. For most trades, something like a wedge sole will suit you better than a heeled boot due to the increased surface area and shock absorption they give. They're also generally lighter on foot due them being made of a lighter compound than hard rubber so you don't feel like you're carrying around bricks on your feet all day. Also due to them being flatter, walking is less of a hassle because you don't have to deal with the jarring motion of going heel-toe heel-toe when you're taking steps. EDIT 2: Put in more style options.
@@jimmydgrant Certainly so haha. There's a good reason why there's been so much R&D into work gear. The stuff I listed there was the tip of the iceberg.
Same here. Been watching a lot of boot videos lately to look for my first real pair of leather boots and so far I'm really liking these Iron Rangers the most.
Hi, I sized down half size from my snicker size as suggested from the Thursday Company so bought the Thursday boots Captan(burnt copper) in size 7 US, but it was little snug/tight esp in the tip portion of my foot. I usually wear size 7.5 US size in snickers , now I am interested in buying the Redwing Ironranger 8111, so what size should I go for? Should I go for size US 7.5??? Please advise 🙏
Hey! I love your videos and appreciate what knowledge you bring to the boot community. I just got my iron rangers in the mail today and love how they look and they feel snug on the foot but I do have a concern...I have a gap on the top of the boot that is about an index finger wide on the back...should I exchange for a smaller size or is it just the leather being rigid up top? Thanks man.
I went into a red wing store and I looked at the rough and tough copper and the amber harness so hard to choose which boots But the amber harness in person looks amazing...
I went with Amber harness over rough and tough because I feel I can always beat the boots up more, but you can't get the rough and tough back into shape.. I don't know if that makes any sense.
Re break in. If you ever wore bikenstocks which are all cork under feet, you know how it molds to your feet perfectly. It is worth the 5-10 wears to break these in.
Iv'e had mine 4 years. Sent back to RW for the roccia resole. They didn't really need to be resoled . I use basic insoles and they make the boot more comfortable. No one will know and you don't have to turn in your man card.
Nice! Yeah, that's good to know they'll last at least that long before needing a resole. Thank you so much for watching and commenting---I really appreciate it!
I bought lose the use for actual work boots. I drill water wells and do a lot of pump service I can say they kick ass. Also just my everyday wearing boots too.
That's awesome---it's funny, I don't know anyone who actually wears them for work, but that's exactly what they're built for. You're using them true to their purpose! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!
I am a truckdriver in Europe en I wear them all te time at work. Just had them resoled after a year of intense use. Got the copper rough & tough for work and the charcoal for the weekends.
I just picked up this Color "Amber Harness-8111" as well as the "OXBlood Mesa-8119 " which I love. Just got them in the mail today. order them on Black Friday from a Store out in Texas. Took forever to get here do to the shortage of USPS Employees being out because of Covid Cases. You can change the eyelets on the boots, Some Red Wing Stores do it right on the spot. You have to look for a store that does it. otherwise the store sends it out to a Qualified Cobbler hired by Red Wing. I wouldn't send them back out to Red Wing. it could be months before you get them back.
@@BootSpy That's a real Tough Call. The 8111 is a Hard Top Benz and the 8119 is a Convertible Benz. Tough to decide, but they both have their places. The Oxblood is more versatile than you think. Goes with , Grey, Tobacco, Bone White, Blue, Etc. The Ambers Would be less versatile but More on the Higher Casual/Dressier side? At least that's how I see it. That's Why I got both, I'm not driving myself crazy like that. LOL Hope that makes sense :o)
Awesome video. I subbed within 30 seconds. Going to pull the trigger on these in the next few weeks. Something about these boots and they way that they will age just makes them seem so effortless and easy to fit in, especially with denim, like you’ve said.
Yes, you should definitely use cedar boot trees. Just getting one pair that you can switch between your boots is a great start, but you can find two pairs on amazon for something like $20. It'll help your boots continue to look great for much longer
If you're in pain or bleeding from wearing a boot, you aren't "breaking it in", you bought the wrong size. Consider the EE width that Red Wing offers for the Iron Ranger if you aren't fitting comfortably in the standard D width at an appropriate length.
Interesting, that's good to know! When I was fitted for my Iron Rangers, the sales guys did mention that some people go a full size down. I imagine the break in period was pretty substantial for you. Thanks for watching!
I went a full step down. It kicked my butt. The sales guys at redwing smiled and laughed as I limped out of the store. Now I love them wear them about 4-5 days a week.
Question: I'm wearing a pair of 1907's in size 10. Wanting to order a pair of Iron Rangers and thinking size 9.5. Sound right from your experience? Thanks in advance
In my experience, Red Wing Heritage boots all have similar sizing between them, so I wouldn't change the size unless your 1907s are a bit big on you now
I'm one of the 4 months break in period. I'm a little wider than this boot is meant for and it was a brutal experience. But now they're a second skin and the most comfortable boots I own outside of a pair of danner logger 917s, which fit and feel like a sneaker, but also they will not last long and they don't do well with smelling good either. Thats another thing the iron rangers excell in, the whole boot made of leather, they don't smell.
Interesting! I've never heard that before, but I'll make sure I stow that away because I'm sure others have faced the same issue! Thank you for watching!
I wear various sizes of boots and shoes, so I need recommendation for these boots. I wear adidas running shoes size US 8.5, converse sneakers size US 8, and salomon hiking boots size US 8.5. Should I go for size US 8 or 7.5?
@@BootSpy Oh forgot to mention. I also wear an Aquila leather oxford size US 7, and previously had Thursday chelsea (Duke) size US 7.5. My foot length is 25.5 cm. So now I'm so confused, and no store in my town selling Iron Ranger to try on.
I've got the UNDONE Basecamp on a Vario nato strap. UNDONE was founded by one of the world's best Rolex repairmen---I highly recommend you at least check out their IG feed because they have some of the most unique watches I've ever seen---I'm a big fan of the brand.
First video I’ve watched on the Iron Rangers. Went into a RedWings store last week and I’m still researching. I wear a size 10-11 most brands, they sized me at a 9.5 D. They said where the toe crease was at when I was walking around in the 9.5 D is where it should be? They felt really stiff, so I’m still researching. I love the look of them. I’m thinking about the 8084 Black or the 8086 Charcoal. So is it to my understanding that the leather grain/type varies depending upon the color of boot?
Yeah, there are minor differences in the leather depending on which color you get, but the leather is all great quality so I'd always go with whichever is catching your eye.
Quick question. Did I understand the reviewer right when he said they will last 2 or 3 years ? I'm interested in possibly gett these but leary if they only last a few years as I have several pairs of doc martens that still going strong after 4-5 years.
If you wear Red Wings every day, the SOLE may wear out after 2 or 3 years, but you can easily get that replaced. I plan on having my Iron Rangers for 20 years---the quality is high enough for that kind of longevity with a little care
Awesome--thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it! I'm wearing an UNDONE Basecamp. They're a fantastic brand--the founder is one of the best Rolex repairmen in the world and he started an affordable brand that does some pretty off the wall designs.
@@BootSpy I am very familiar with Undone but have never pulled the trigger. The Basecamp is a very interesting piece for sure. Thanks so much for answering my question. As a watch guy I'm always curious about what people have on their wrist.
@@halfpastblog Yeah, I really like the Basecamp. I also have the Basecamp Cali, and I think I prefer the California dial---super unique. And I'm the same way when it comes to watches!

What color brown are your iron rangers
Love these boots. Found a pair for $100 at my local thrift store, such a a good find.
Besides I’d much rather have the natural leather insoles mold to my feet.
These shoes easily lasts 10-20 years
oooo I'm excited to see what these look like 10 years from now! Thank you for watching!
It's a fucked world. 10-11 sneaker, 9.5 Brannock, 9 Ranger. The hell?
Shit good times!
Until you have to break in a pair of Nick's
comfortable compared to new but comfortable? let's face it redwings boots are not comfortable....and i own a few pairs
I have 6 pairs of red wings and I agree with this message. Word of advice get insoles.
It takes about 40 hours of wearing, but then they will be your most comfortable footwear.
totally agree---I'm digging them a lot more now after breaking them fully in
Love wearing mine with my Levi’s.
classic look!
I had absolutely no break-in period “. Felt sooo goood right out of the box.
They are the best of times, and the worst of times, which is why they last a lifetime and not just for a few years.
haha yeah, I haven't gone to full insole mode, but I can see why you would!
One of the best boot review on RUclips! Thanks man. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much--I really appreciate the kind words!
Mine are 8111 too and I had absolutely no discomfort breaking in mine. None. 😉👍
If you wear darn tough socks with them from the beginning it makes it so much better!! Great review by the way.
Yeah, I've been hearing about those socks.. gotta give them a try!
I wore them on my Appalachian trail hike from Georgia to Virginia. They worked great!
YES, its worth spending $320.
some times you gotta put things in perspective! I love it!
Worth every penny. I am sold on Red Wing
Yeah Buddy!
Yeah buddy!
Good boots are an investment. Do you want to spend $80 every year on a new pair of boots for the rest of your life, or do you want to spend $320 on a pair that will _conservatively_ last you a decade-plus? Even the periodic resoling pays for itself over that stretch.
That's a thinking man right there!
Idk I put my boots through a lot, I've been debating about buying them. Boots don't ever last me a year and I've used every brand even red wing
But YMMV.
It’s chrome tanned and infused with oils
Yep---got that wrong in the vid, but was corrected somewhere along the way within the comments--thank you for watching and commenting!
@@BootSpyyou gotta update that on the vid with a caption or something
Yeah, I've heard a lot about the Oxblood Mesa's---aren't they great?!
Just watched this review for the 2nd time. Brought home the 8084, black harness leather, today! Starting the break in process, slowly. Thanks for your advice. I’m 68 & retired so can take my time😎
You're wise, too! Well, enjoy yourself with those boots---you deserve them!
Totally agree on the break in. My 8085's had less than a week break in time. My 1907's, I'm two months in and they're still breaking in.
I think the break in period and amount of pain depends either from person to person or type of leather you choose. The hawthorne muleskinner leather was very comfy from the start and almost no break in period was required. Already on the second day of owning them I was walking 10 km + in them and they were very comfy.
Great review, helped me by my own pair recently. I wear 11.5 (Brannock) and ended up dropping a full size (10.5) to get the correct fit.
I am gonna buy exactly same IR 8111 the amber harness.
Nice, thank you for adding this---always good to hear how these fit other people
Great video ! Do you think the Ranger or the Moc Toe is more indicated for a lil hiking/ office characteristic ? Thanks in advance!
This is a work boot hence the iron ranger. Originally produced for iron workers. However redwing does sell casual boots if you're interested.
Did you get them?

@@BootSpy I loke merino wool. I also need them nice and form fitting. This way they dont move around my feet as I move.
I think oil tanned leather is chrome tanned, cause its blueish on the inside. no?
I am thinking of buying one and going to the Red Wing store after watching this video.
Did you do it, Larry?

My first pair felt great. They didn't hurt my feet at all. Normal wear my feet didn't hurt at all. 8 to 10 miles my feet felt a little tired.
Very nice content. Hope your channel takes off!

@@BootSpy thanks! Heading to my local Redwing retailer to test my size.
If you are having a tough break in period they likely are the wrong size. I had mine fitted at Red Wing and they were comfortable from the get go. I wear 7.5 or 8 and I got an 8. Perfect!
I own the oxblood IR and the copper IR. Best boots I have ever owned and imo looks a lot better than the Captain boots.
That's my thought exactly.. Nicks boots are definitely on my list, but they're still a little out of range at the moment.
@@waxa3869 I think it’s a safe bet that our great grandfathers had sore feet.

Thanks man.
Great comments and observations!
Thank you for watching!
little correction they start their life as chrome tan. great review!!
Una pregunta. Yo soy 8,5 wide en timberland premium 6inch. Es la misma talla en Iron ranger?
I went into a red wing store and I looked at the rough and tough copper and the amber harness so hard to choose which boots But the amber harness in person looks amazing...
I went with Amber harness over rough and tough because I feel I can always beat the boots up more, but you can't get the rough and tough back into shape.. I don't know if that makes any sense.
Are there a specific type of sock that should be worn with these?
thick wool socks. Nothing specific. But thick wool is the best
Cool channel, can’t wait to watch it grow
Thank you so much for the love--I really appreciate it!
What is raw denim?
Which one do you like better? 8111 or 8119? Thank you for watching again!
LOL
Hope that makes sense :o)
Should I spray them with Crep protector? Thx
I wouldn't. No need. If you watch my recent video, I break down all the best leather conditioners and I like venetian for my 8111s
@@BootSpy Thank you. Just treat myself a pair of 8084 and 8111 this month.
Very informative. Thanks brotha
Guys I have flat feet are these good boots for my feet ?
Put them on and they feel great. Well worth the money. They look good with my Ben Davis.
Awesome video. I subbed within 30 seconds. Going to pull the trigger on these in the next few weeks. Something about these boots and they way that they will age just makes them seem so effortless and easy to fit in, especially with denim, like you’ve said.
Nice! Thank you for the love--I really appreciate it!
Great review!
Question for folks who have been wearing Rangers for a while: do y'all use boot trees? I'm on the fence about whether I should bother with them.
Yes, you should definitely use cedar boot trees. Just getting one pair that you can switch between your boots is a great start, but you can find two pairs on amazon for something like $20. It'll help your boots continue to look great for much longer
@@BootSpy thanks
I’m on day two of break in on my iron rangers 😅🤕. Regardless of the awful break in period, I still love my boots
haha I hear you! Stay tough!
I bought yesterday 8085 I use today for 10 hours and go to some places … bad idea my feet hurt so bad I got blisters on my pinky finger and the heel
If you're in pain or bleeding from wearing a boot, you aren't "breaking it in", you bought the wrong size. Consider the EE width that Red Wing offers for the Iron Ranger if you aren't fitting comfortably in the standard D width at an appropriate length.
I'm an 11.5 wide in running shoes. Most shoes I'm a twelve because they don't do wide sizes and I need the width. Somehow I'm a 9.5 wide in these
huh, that's so interesting---I'm assuming you went and got fitted at the Red Wing store then?
Great review with great details. Thanks, nice looking boots, too
I'd definitely go a whole size down if you have narrower feet. I also wear a 10.5 in nikes but wear a 9.5 in red wings and wolverine 1000 miles
Interesting, that's good to know! When I was fitted for my Iron Rangers, the sales guys did mention that some people go a full size down. I imagine the break in period was pretty substantial for you. Thanks for watching!
@@BootSpy Well I have 2 pairs of iron rangers. My muleskinners weren't too bad to break in but my amber harness is a pain quite literally lol
I went a full step down. It kicked my butt. The sales guys at redwing smiled and laughed as I limped out of the store. Now I love them wear them about 4-5 days a week.
I was told a full size down from my brannock size which is a 10.5 so my IR’s are a 9.5 and my sneakers are all 11.
great Review...will get them soon..but i have wide feet..will go to store, instead of online
You can always easily have Cobbler change out the Eyelets to whatever color you prefer.
Did you have "popping" issues with the soles?
Which is more classic? Black or Brown?
Brown is the more classic of the two, but you can't go wrong either way!
My boots were comfortable right out out of the box.
I wear Chuck Taylor size 11 and they're actually ture to size with my Iron Ranger. I tried 10.5 and they felt little bit tight for me.
It depends on your true size. What's the first size you try with any new brand? If it's 8.5, then I would recommend going with a size 8 in Red Wings
What watch are you wearing?
I've got the UNDONE Basecamp on a Vario nato strap. UNDONE was founded by one of the world's best Rolex repairmen---I highly recommend you at least check out their IG feed because they have some of the most unique watches I've ever seen---I'm a big fan of the brand.
Great video. Great job.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!
They look brutal 2 break in?
I always think when you get blisters you got wrong size. Boot should feel good at start, leather streches but it doesn't have to.
So hard to decide on color? What did you end up going with?
Quick question. Did I understand the reviewer right when he said they will last 2 or 3 years ?
I'm interested in possibly gett these but leary if they only last a few years as I have several pairs of doc martens that still going strong after 4-5 years.
If you wear Red Wings every day, the SOLE may wear out after 2 or 3 years, but you can easily get that replaced. I plan on having my Iron Rangers for 20 years---the quality is high enough for that kind of longevity with a little care
@@BootSpy may I ask how much does it roughly cost to have something like that done?
The thick leather helps with abrasions.
very true! thank you for watching!
Really enjoyed the view. Thanks! As a watch channel I have to ask what watch you are wearing. 🙂
@@BootSpy I love a Cali dial. Don't own one at this time though.
I have a pair of iron ranger boots and they are great, but feel like bargain basement boots compared to my Nicks boots.
