The first time I caught an asteroid and tried to land it with parachutes it launched itself and my craft out of kerbol system with speed around +1370000000 m/s… ..but at least i’ve got an achievement for leaving kerbol system :D
I once caught an asteroid and tried to land it, but it was too heavy and my aerobraking was less than effective. I had to abort the descent at 2000m and emergency deploy my chutes to not kill jeb.
tip: i reccomend checking inclination before launching incase asteroid fly-by is opposite direction than you normally launch (eastward), so you dont have to redo mission or flip orbital direction
@@flyntwick Ye, you're gonna escape kerbin for intercept. It doesn't matter from what inclination you do that from, you'll end up going the same direction anyways.
A little tip when doing this, once you've attached your rocket to the asteroid, activate free pivot and turn down your reaction wheels. Then slowly point towards target. Once you are there, lock the piviot. This will reduce the issue of your thrust vector not being aligned with your COM.
My first asteroid capture was a D class asteroid to be put around the Mun. I went brute force (there was no natural encounter anytime soon) as I neglected the mission until last minute and after attaching the rocket, I had only about 400m/s delta V. Took some last minute randevous and refuelings, but I got it to work.
Simple, no waffle, concise and funny. Nice work. I put sentinel out last night so hoping to do a capture tonight if I can. Btw, how did you build that base with interconnecting parts on the asteroid ? I'm thinking of grabbing one and making a hotel for all kerbalkind
You use a lvl 1 engineer to directly place docking ports on the asteroid in EVA construction mode, then dock the main modules of the space station to those ports (you can also just use the claw). After that, I interconnected the modules with modular pipes with docking ports on hinges on each end. Turns out you can have a single vessel dock to itself.
In all seriousness, attaching it to a space station that can then mine it will give you a space station that is able to provide infinite fuel for the foreseeable future.
Lol the way the kerbal looks at you after you hit it.. so you could attach an engine to an asteroid and use it as a fuel tank.. with drills and a convertotron, an asteroid could be the fuel tank for a ship.. i also had an idea where you could orbit asteroids aroundbother asteroid and orbit them around the mun like an orbital sculpture..
couldn't you destroy the ksc with it? or crash it into a small moon? also, how do the developers ensure that you can actually capture asteroids? it seems like an extremely hard system to code. and flyby's and gravity assists would screw with their orbits, right?
Basically the asteroid objects are just like rockets, they get spawned in with a trajectory close to wherever you're searching for them, and it is entirely possible for gravity assists to derail them.
I built a plane with a grappler and extra cockpit for flying an asteroid to different biomes and doing science while flying and landed. Good for 12000 science
Kerbal: "Or decommission a space station in style"
Kessler: Please don't.
hey! it all deorbitted. As long as it gets slammed from the opposite direction you should be good. Would suck to be hit from behind.
@@bermchasin 🤨📸
Tfw you struggle with docking two vessels while some guy just added an asteroid to his space station.
I can barely dock the 2 vessels on acapello mission 💀
@@cristicristi1639 I can barely dock the 2 vessels in the scenario refuelling at minmus💀
I can't dock 2 vessels in the docking tutorial
I cant even dock 2 craft together cause both spin and every time I get close I go over and away
Tfw you realize you’re old AF because you just struggled for 2 minutes to figure out wtf “Tfw” means 😅
Using the asteroid as a heat shield during aero braking looks so cool…
it might be unstable, uncontrollable, might disintegrate, and might oxidize in the atmosphere. but looks cool

@@haydentravis3348 bruh... You still have to be travelling in the same direction.

So that's how a kerbal gets trapped in a cupola in orbit
tensile strength of those parachutes is nuts
you also could capture the asteroid when it's still not entering kerbin's SOI, that's saving much deltaV compared to direct rendezvous and capture
Pretty much. That same ship could probably capture a D-class asteroid if done correctly

Kerbal: :D
Well, he's Jeb, after all
I mean, it's Jeb. Of course he's having a good time in the face of death.
i was not expecting it to hit the station at such velocity
The Expanse teaches us: things go fast in space.
this has to be one the most didactic tutorials on asteroid capture on youtube. great job!!
Thank you so much! There are no other good videos I could find about this and it explains it perfectly!

The speed at which that station was obliterated almost got me.

if you match the inclination of the asteroid in your launch direction, rather than when reaching orbit, you save a lot of fuel
its very cool to keep it as an ore source and just have a refuel station in orbit!

Great video!
I don't catch asteroids that often but this is quality content
Thank you so so much for this tutorial! Subbed
Very nicely executed
I had no idea! Informative video.
Oh my god how cool it would be to be the kerbal in the cupola when that thing was obliterated
I love how he talked about his low fuel taking journey 😂
I always use Clydesdales for my mass simulation. And I like going 1 full Clydesdale above my expected max mass. Fewer parts for more ballast.
kerbal space program weapon of destruction:
I can proudly say I once parked a class g asteroid at the ksc, it took weeks 😅
I weep for that Kerbal in his cupola....
Thanks for the tips!
Looks like a massive PITA. I'll just go mine some basic rocks on the ground of Mun/Minmus. Probably where half the asteroids come from anyway.
What’s the little red landing target on the map screen? Is that a mod or new feature?
its part of a mod called kerbal engineer redux
Note to myself: once I actually manage to get rockets in the sky, why not aim for an asteroid next?
That ending holy shit hahahahah
Not what i came for. Just wanted to know how to move an asteroid.
But i ain’t complaining 😂 this was freaking awesome and funny 🤣💪🏼👍🏼

This is really helpful thanks
It's not just a boulder...it's a rock

I have captured my first asteroid today. Now I just need to figure out how to get back to Kerbin :D

MechJeb2 is the best mod for this job...
But also this is usefully :))))
Thanks! Do they give science points as well?
They do! I should've included that. You just EVA a kerbal close to it and get a surface sample.
@@jebrulio nice thanks! I'm trying to complete the techtree with the interstellar extended mod so I need every bit of science I can get ;)

tell me, please, what is the name of the mod that shows the landing place?
Kerbal Engineer Redux has it, on the landing tab. Alternatively you can use a mod called Trajectories

I managed to capture a comet once, I don't recommend putting comets in low kerbin orbit

My fav thing to do with asteroids is just send kerbals and dock a little station to asteroids and the kerbals ar entrapped there for eternity
