    My introduction to David Lynch. Though I'm a big Peaks fan, I was a little too young when it aired for the first time.
    Lost Highway I saw in the theater and loved it. I think, I even had the soundtrack-CD before I saw the film, thanks to an interview with David Lynch in Rolling Stone.
    Alas, Jack Nance's last film, unfortunately. R. I. P.
    Thank you for this review!

    One of your best, Mr Pone. I saw this twice in-theatre when it was run in '97.
    Both times were in Orinda CA's little old 1940s cinema - low ceilings, only 30-40 luxurious seats - red velvet curtains, carpeting and wood everything; all very Mediterranean.
    Possibly the best memory I have of being in a genuine cinema - experiencing something that you really can't get in any other way.

    The mystery man has to be Death, right? He's friends with Larond but then he comes for Larond, he's friends with Fred but then comes for Fred. It's something he can't avoid no matter how much he lies to others or himself. Not to mention he appears to be a visual reference to Death from The Seventh Seal.

    At the end, Fred is morphing, as shown in the car. Realities, characters whatever. The crime scene at the end is a work of this blended reality. Once again Fred is re-imagining everything, trying make sense of it all. Trying to make it linear, but it doesn't make much sense to the viewers because it shouldn't. In my humble opinion.

    I believe the mystery man repersents pistol, the murder weapon. The give away is in the scene that after Pete turning back to Fred. He found the mystery man sitting on the rear seat of the car where exactly the pistol was left. If one follows this logic. Now, the scene of Fred first meeting him at party makes sense. The mystery man told him they met before, reveals Fred had the pistol prepared. He had probably planned to murder his wife and Dick Laurent all along. Then the mystery man told him he is at his home right now. It literally means the pistol was stocked somewhere in his house at the moment. Afterwards, Fred asked Andy who is that man in black. He was relied that he is a friend of Mr. Laurent. Later, we learnt from the scene with Dick Laurent talking Pete on phone while the mystery man sitting beside him. They two ( Dick and his pistol) indeed are always together. They are like "friends". Remember, after Fred dragged Dick to the car, the mystery man glancing through windows? It is Dick Laurent had left his pistol in the room for he got caught off guard. In short, the mystery man is created by Fred to seprate giult from his consciousness. By doing so, he tries to convince himslef the pistol made him committed such crimes. Yet, through the whole movie we have witnessed how Fred failed spectacularly.

      How is a gun the murder weapon when Renee's body is in pieces, like the victim of a chainsaw murder?

    • @riva2003
      @riva2003 4 года назад

      @@Corn_Pone_Flicks Well, we have never learnt any autopsy reports from the movie, haven't we? One could assume she was shot and killed first, later butchered. Same applies to the killing of Dick Laurent. Fred slit his throat before fired sevral shots. What are the murder weapons at this particular scene? The knife and pistol both involved.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  4 года назад +2

      We COULD assume that, but we could also assume she was poisoned. What reason do we have to assume the manner of death at all? The only clue we have is Fred's "dream," where it appears that he physically attacks her.

    • @bartholomewesperanza3442
      @bartholomewesperanza3442 4 года назад

      Alice’s murder weapon was not a pistol, there’s zero evidence for that. The video tape represents the objective truth, what really happened, and it’s clear to see Fred lost control and brutally attacked Alice and ended up dismembering her. There was no gun involved in that murder in the first place

    My question is: Fred killed Dick Laurent and Renee in real life. But did he also kill Andy in real life?

  • @markpaterson2053
    @markpaterson2053 6 месяцев назад

    No, Pete only ever existed in Fred's dellusion; the cops investigating the scene actually happened becaus this is the REAL memory incorporated into his derangement; towards the end the dellusion begins to merge with true events as his dream fails and his true memory wins.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  6 месяцев назад

      How does Fred have any memory of an event where he was not present? That would also have to be a complete delusion.

    • @markpaterson2053
      @markpaterson2053 6 месяцев назад

      @@Corn_Pone_Flicks Because none of it happened that way, like he said, "I like to remember things my own way." -- remember? Nothing that happens in the movie happened the way it really did, get it? He killed his wife, got put on death row, subsequently died on death row, except his dellusion tried to escape...

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  6 месяцев назад

      That does not answer the question. You do not have memories, real or inaccurate, of events you did not experience at all. Fred thinking he just found his wife dead when he actually did the killing is a false memory. Fred thinking that a bunch of detectives are milling around Andy's place and discussing certain topics and possibilities while he's in the belief that he's somewhere else is more akin to a dream. We all have memories that are wrong to varying degrees, but nobody has memories of things they never experienced. It doesn't feel like it fits the pattern.
      Also, it's "delusion."

    • @markpaterson2053
      @markpaterson2053 6 месяцев назад

      @@Corn_Pone_FlicksI think Lynch confuses you more than others, if you're nitpicking this much about others' experience. You're basically telling people "you don't get Lynch" which doesn't help. I understand this movie in my own way, your confusion doesn't in any way affect that. Plus, you seem to have completely missed my point, seeing how you keep repeating it back to me (you don't seem to click on the fact that we actually agree, in some form, which is the best you'd ever get from two separate opinions on Lynch).
