    That. Was fantastic. I have watched 1000 'Last Jedi' videos, and that was the best. I mean it. I am a professional film critic and watch a lot of You Tube junk with varying degrees of amusement and depression. However, your stuff is very funny, VERY well produced and for the first time in like five years, I actually subscribed to your channel. I mean, I get soooo irritated that EVERY you tube video starts off with the creator begging you to like and subscribe, which I never do. So, Corn Pone Flicks... you stand tall, apart from the rest. Like the 'Twin Peaks' stuff too! Look forward to exploring more of your content.

    "Luke becoming a dumbass" is exactly what I've been saying ever since watching it. My first reaction wasn't "Luke became evil" it was "Luke became stupid" because, when he decides to kill a SLEEPING BOY, he decides to turn on his lightsaber. You know, that weapon that makes a loud noise when you turn it on! That weapon that will wake up your target as soon as you light it! All one would need to do is place it up to the person's head and turn it on. But somehow, Luke can't even remember that the weapon he's used for decades makes a loud noise and might wake his target up.

    good lord, you know how hard it is finding a reasonable, thoughtful critique of this movie?!
    i loved force awakens, and at the start of this movie I thought Luke was messing with Rey, Yoda-style. she's going to have to prove herself worthy of training, i foolishly thought! she's actually going to have to struggle and learn this time and... nope. Just bad writing. and then the movie kept getting worse and worse.

    "Now, you may not like it, but not liking it, and it not being any good, are not the same thing. I don't like opera, but I would never accuse opera singers of having no talent. Some things just aren't for some people."
    I've enjoyed a number of your videos since finding your channel, but those two sentences right there earned you a subscriber. I have never in my damn life understood why that simple point is so fucking hard for many people to understand.
    For instance: I was born in the mid-80s with much older siblings who grew up with STAR WARS, so it was a presence in my childhood. I like the franchise, but don't love it, and have been fairly indifferent about the recent Episodes. I actually like THE LAST JEDI for what it is, but even a very casual viewer like me can see how abysmally "thought out" this trilogy was, and I completely understand why more devoted fans hated/loved it. (I haven't bothered with Episode 9.) I also have a deep love for numerous operas (the best productions of them, anyway), but even a Wagnerite like me understands why many folks can't stand the medium itself. I firmly believe that Quality and Preference are orthogonal to each other, which is admittedly an extreme view. So when I find an art critic/essayist/commentator who actually has a similar-ish view, I cling to their work in the glut of such RUclips videos.
    So yeah, definitely digging your work, and can't wait to binge your TWIN PEAKS series tonight. I expect to agree and disagree with it with equal measure, and enjoy every second of it.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +3

      The weird part is that that's what got a copyright claim on this video. Not the metric fuckloads of Star Wars footage and music, but a few seconds of Angel which I purposely trimmed and re-arranged to make it harder to detect. RUclips is bizarre.
      I was slightly grateful that I got to tackle another Star Wars film precisely because I'd meant to do that Lemonheads joke in the last one and then forgot about it.

    Force fields can retain atmosphere in Star Wars. Note how ship decks can be open to space and no one needs a vacuum suit.
    Han, Leia and Chewbacca are walking inside a force field in that scene but still need respirators.

    Alright so one thing that I'm 80% sure will be revealed in EP9 (not that I care) is that Rey didn't "learn" force moves from Kylo but instead "absorbed his training" which unlocked the force powers she previously had. The big reveal will be that she had a mind wipe and she was previously a powerful jedi, but she had to unlock the powers by "downloading" from Kylo... it's kind of like putting a band aid on a scar, it's too late... but that's my prediction.

    Good video, some superb editing and it made me laugh a fair few times. And also made me want to watch more Ren & Stimpy again. God, that was a good show. Um, anyway - watching this was a roller-coaster experience which had me alternatively nodding in sage agreement and - albeit less so - disagreeing with some of your points. My main issue is that at the core of The Last Jedi there is a lot that I find genuinely interesting. Having Luke simply turn up and train Rey would have been dull, having him consumed by a bitter sense of failure at seeing the whole cycle continue is gripping. The theme of disconnect between the impulsive young generation and the old I found to be an interest dynamic. Most of all I was really excited during the movie at the half way point when Kylo Ren knocked off the tedious Snoke and offered Rey joint-rule. Since I found Snoke to be seemingly nothing more than a place-holder villain I applauded his glib demise, and momentarily was assailed by a magical vision of third act and follow-up movie with Kylo and Rey together where anything could happen. Would they try to bring order to the galaxy, Rey being driven to save others from her miserable childhood experience by creating a more just society through the rule of force? Would Kylo get over his father issues and, I don't know, plan a musical or something?
    And then she turned him down. Bah. And the film proceeded to devolve into nonsense. But for a while it was trying new things, and I had to give it some credit for that.
    Unfortunately though everything it did try was undermined by the worst cinema sin of all - people acting like idiots. Even though I was cheerfully accepting the new stuff like slow moving naval battle stern-chases (Which I love in anything. Everything and anything needs a slow-moving naval battle stern-chase. Hornblower. The Golden Girls. Literally anything...) and hyper-space kamikaze and even Miss Leia Poppins floating about... I was utterly baffled on the same points you were. Why didn't Holdo simply at least tell the crew, "Look, we've got a plan and simply waiting to be picked off isn't it. But we can't tell you what that plan is because there may be a traitor on board and it relies on subterfuge. But trust us, we've got a plan. Have faith in us." And why did Finn let the shifty as Shifty McShifty of the Shifty Clan DJ listen in on his highly sensitive conversation with Poe on the radio? And as much as I actually enjoyed the actress playing Rose in the movie, everything involving her and Finn ultimately became like some sort of weird human-pinball game where they were just bouncing off every random possible plot element in sight to no effect.
    So in summary, not a terribly good film. But not a cinematic disaster either. Visually there were some incredibly artfully done scenes in this one. And hey, Laura Dern and Adrian Edmondson, always good to see them get work. Yoda being deranged was car-crash fun. The main issue I take away is that they failed to change anything meaningful in the story-telling universe other than reduce the numbers on each side, which means nothing since the next title crawl can reset everything to status quo again, with another big thing that needs blowing up. I mean, what else can you do with Star Wars really? It's not Star Trek. Time-travelling to 1980's San Francisco to save whales isn't an option.
    Still baffled why people keep calling Rey a Mary Sue by the way, since farm-boy Luke gets a free pass on blowing a planet-killing weapon up following an intense dogfight whereas she repeatedly achieves nothing-much-at-all-really beyond play-fighting with Scowly McSmoulder Kylo Ren. The tricks she does know without learning don't make her over-powered, they just indicate that the screenwriters are incredibly lazy.
    Sorry, this was a really long post. But so was your entertaining video, so, um... yes!

    I will disagree with one major thing in this review. That is that no matter who you are, you shouldn't attack your fanbase and your consumer base. It's just bad for business in general, something that we saw in the box office of Solo. Solo may have been a popcorn flick with little substance since we know that Han and Chewie will make it out in the end because they need to, but it was miles more entertaining than the mess that Johnson created. Although, I do agree that he would have been better on a standalone project versus an interconnected one.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +4

      Oh, I do agree it's really terrible for business, and I don't know how people as rich as Disney could possibly not realize that. I just don't care at a personal level; I don't identify with any sort of fandom or group mentality. Solo was basically a very disposable film, but it didn't royally crap all over the continuity, and as such is probably the best of these new films thus far. In the end, though, I consider it all fan-fic, and I can't really count it as part of the saga either way.

    Great review with many excellent points. Just one small factual correction, though: Luke didn’t seen the future in Ben’s mind. Jedi don’t reach into people’s heads and summon visions of their future. Luke was reading Ben’s memories. (Note: The screenplay states that when Ben awoke and saw Luke, he knew what Luke had seen.) The implications are pretty huge.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +1

      I'm just going on what was said in the film itself, which was just "I saw darkness...he would bring destruction and pain and etc. etc. because of what he would become." I didn't say where that vision came from, just that he already knew he couldn't trust visions to definitely indicate the future, and thus wasn't exhibiting any sense that he'd learned anything from his own past experiences..

    • @beccaavocado
      @beccaavocado 5 лет назад

      I understand the critique being based only on the film. That’s perfectly fair, and prudent. But what was shown in the film was Luke making the Jedi gesture we’ve seen Kylo do to Rey. Canonically, that’s memory-reading, not vision-summoning. This is important because while the future is always in motion, memories are of fixed past events. So Luke’s horror was in reaction to something that had already happened.( Something, by the way, involving a woman’s scream - a scream which Rey heard when the cave called to her.) To be clear - I think your criticisms are excellent and the fandom frustation/anger with this film is absolutely justified. It’s just that I see most commentators on all sides mistaking what literally happened in this scene, and I feel that’s pivitol to piecing together wtf was going on with Luke (which I’m sure we’ll learn about in 9, though I think not giving us more in TLJ was a really bad move).

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад

      I don't know what states that as being canonical, but to me it looks exactly like the gesture Luke makes when he's trying to lift his X-wing in Empire. If that's what the film was trying to convey, it totally eluded being represented by the scene that was written, where Luke says nothing about "what he had done," and instead references "what he will become." And the future isn't in motion nearly as much as continuity between these new films...Luke made a map he didn't want used, Finn had to help Poe escape because he couldn't fly an escape craft, except now he can...they can't even keep the broad strokes fixed. I just can't put much stock in the specifc meaning behind a hand gesture. They keep inventing new Force abilities at a whim.

    • @beccaavocado
      @beccaavocado 5 лет назад

      It’s a “using the Force” gesture. And as we saw in the prior movie - whose context is relevant, as this is a 3-part story - that gesture towards someone’s head is memory-reading. Luke’s words are indeed confusing, tense-wise. But Luke is speaking not just from his perspective then but from his perspective now. Moreover, he hears a woman’s scream when he looks in Kylo’s mind - a scream that echoes as the flashback ends. Rey hears this exact same scream - eminating from the cave, along with the scream of a child. Interesting and oddly specific, yes?

    I think Disney has finally wised up (or, rather, taken assessment of both ticket and toy sales, and the lack thereof) and Rian Johnson will not come within 10 miles of another Star Wars film. However, since public relations is a thing, both Rian and Disney will continue to act as if his trilogy is still very much happening. There will never be an official announcement to the contrary because it only makes both parties look bad.
    In any case, TLJ is a spectacular example of hijacking a franchise that is essentially escapist entertainment and twisting it into your own vehicle for preachy political agendas. This would be as opposed to being concerned with, you know, actually telling a story...

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +2

      I hear this a lot, but frankly I think the political issues are blown way out of proportion and are nowhere near the biggest problems. I mean, Iron Man was built very much on the story of Tony Stark being a war profiteer and learning how his lack of awareness was causing real harm. The problem in Last Jedi is the total irrelevance of those ideas to the story being told. Have you seen Ivan Ortega's Last Jedi re-edit? It's revelatory, because after cutting out all the irrelevant tangents, bad humor, and downright silly events like Space Leia, the film is still just dull. Individual scenes are far improved, but there wasn't any meat on the bones to begin with. THAT'S this film's biggest issue: lots of bad points, very few good points.

    • @batman.darthmaul
      @batman.darthmaul 5 лет назад

      @@Corn_Pone_Flicks I actually like, i don't know, about half of the film. Those parts I like a lot, actually. In any case, part of what I'm suggesting is maybe film's problems are an outgrowth of the filmmakers' being more concerned with political proselytizing than storytelling.
      As far as the political issue being "blown way out of proportion," there are those who actually work in the industry that agree with me regarding turning films into vessels for political statements. I'm sure you're aware of the first Alien film? Well, the film's writer has this to say: “The whole point of Alien [according to the producer] isn’t that this is a dangerous space monster. The whole point of Alien, according to Walter Hill, is that evil corporations created this situation…You can see how having taken the time and trouble to have conceived of and write Alien in the first place to find myself butting up against a producer who’s a writer and believes that’s what your movie should be converted into...In other words, my work of art must now be blunted and warped into being a flag for a trite social statement.” --Dan O'Bannon, Cast & Crew commentary
      ...and I don't even think the political messaging in the first two Alien films is that heavy-handed. The Last Jedi, on the other hand.....
      Edit: The writer of the first Alien is Dan O'Bannon, not David Giler as I first stated.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +1

      I've listened to the Alien commentary on a few different occasions, so I'm familiar with Dan O'Bannons's issues with the finished film. However, I EXPECT writers to put their own ideas or beliefs into what they write. To not do so would seem absurd on the face of it...we'd end up with a bunch of stories so neutered they might as well have been penned by machines. Obviously, it's better in every case if the handling of the ideas is done correctly, hence my prior comparison to Iron Man. Both addressed war profiteering, but only one bothered to make it worth including. What I see happening a lot can also use Alien as a handy example...Ripley was written in the script as a male (as were all the crew). It was later decided to make her female, and she's now one of the most famous badass female characters in sci-fi. If the same thing happened now, instanrtly people would be screaming about "feminising the media" and other such knee-jerk reactions, assuming the least charitable reasons. I don't care at all that Rey is female. I like women. I care that her character is poorly written and violates established story rules.

    • @batman.darthmaul

      @@Corn_Pone_Flicks Personally, I go to films for entertainment, not to hear the writer's political views, and I certainly didn't pay to hear an effort toward social engineering and obnoxious political preaching. I'll even go so far as to say I think most feel that way. When you were on the way to the theater to see TLJ for the first time, did you say to yourself something like, "Hey, I wonder what animal rights issue I'll see portrayed. That'll be swell! ...and, you know, so appropriate to the franchise..." I know I didn't.
      Or, hey, how about if the political messaging was, instead, about Making The Galaxy Great Again, or the importance of enforcing Tatooine's laws regarding illegal immigration? Would the fallout from that be knee-jerk as well? Or, rather, would including that sort of thing just be obnoxious and inappropriate to the franchise? To ask the question is to answer it, certainly as far as I'm concerned.
      A deliberate proselytizing effort to get our culture to think a certain way across several media forms is well underway. It used to be more subtle, such as the Alien films we discussed, but now it has all the ham-fisted subtlety of a 10-pound skillet to the head...and generally in substandard films to boot. This sort of thing became rampant in comic books a long time ago. Video games as well. It's already all over film. Anime is about to get hit with it big time.
      To me it sounds as though we'll have to just agree to disagree. Look, you've been respectful in our debate so I give you credit for that. The internet is so toxic nowadays, especially with these sort of topics. With that, I'll give you the last word.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад

      I'm respectful to anyone who is respectful to me, regardless of differences in opinion. You seem, however, to be missing my point-I already said repeatedly that the particular examples of political messaging in The Last Jedi didn't fit the story being told, and were therefore irrelevant and should've been left out. I don't go into a movie hoping it will tick off boxes on a checklist-I just hope it will be well-made. This one wasn't, but I see far more fundamental design flaws than those few bits, and I certainly don't see anything that would constitute "social engineering." People throughout history have used art to try and convey their ideas and messages. There's nothing happening here that's new. People are so aggrieved at the idea of hearing ideas they don't agree with these days-personally, I welcome it, as long as it's written intelligently. Rorschach from Watchmen is a character who wears his political views on his sleeve, and they are very, very opposite to mine, but he's my favorite character in the comic/film.
      I would argue that the prequel trilogy was, in fact, "Make the Galaxy Great Again," and if those films were released now, they'd be seen as a specific allegory to the politics of today, when in fact they're just applicable. As much issue as many had with the prequels, Palpatine's story is generally considered to be one of the best aspects of the trilogy.
      Films are things audiences are free to see or ignore if they wish, and I can't see something insidious in an act which is voluntary for the intended recipient. I didn't give this film any of my money (and I certainly never saw it in a theater, not after The Force Awakens), but I would never suggest that it shouldn't have been made from an ideological point of view. Artists should be free to say whatever they want in their works, and the audience can accept or reject those ideas depending on their personal views.

    There are several plot confusions in TLJ, but some of the ones you point out aren't really plot holes. They just depend on context you don't get in the movie but have to find in books and comics. That's not a defense, just suggesting there are answers out there to, e.g. why Leia has to wait for Poe and the fighters in the opening battle scene, how Finn can fly, and mostly importantly, why Luke left a map so people could find him on Ahch-To. (He didn't leave a map for this purpose. He didn't leave it at all, though this isn't understood by everyone in the Resistance.) Still, it's not worth defending the plot of TLJ on certain points but not others cuz it's still a mess in the end. Incidentally I just watched your excellent videos on S3 of Twin Peaks. It's kind of ironic that plot holes, if they exist at all in Twin Peaks, don't really matter and can be easily shrugged off as mistakes without consequences, whereas a very linear story structure as in Star Wars can't suffer even slight errors without causing problems. Again, the plot problems aren't as bad if you're willing to put the films together with the other media, but that doesn't save what is undeniably a very shoddy script and some weird editing choices. Not to mention the plot of TLJ is just boring. A chase scene that goes no where, ugh.... I will say this: The philosophical content of the TLJ and the sequels generally is absolutely fascinating to me, far more so than the original trilogy or the sequels. If you follow the Force down the rabbit hole, you actually wind up in Lynchian territory.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +3

      I would suggest that they were plot holes which other individuals decided to come along later and plug. Supplementary material should expand and enhance the initial experience, and not exist to rationalize it. Twin Peaks and Lynch films in general are telling such a different kind of story that its rules are necessarily different. Star Wars is mythology, where Lynch is all about dream logic.

Sure, maybe characters with an average IQ are more relatable, but that doesn't mean characters with a high IQ are perfect. This in turn can make such high IQ characters relatable.
    For example, the anime Doctor Stone has a protagonist Senku who is a genius. Still, despite him being incredibly smart, he can't fulfill his plans all on his own and needs others to help him achieve great things.

Films like the John Wick series, for example, introduce a character who is already at the top of his game, which work on a different principle (and it also is a good example for people moaning that there are no more badass male characters in modern film, which is also bullshit). And at the same time, Hermione isn't a Mary Sue precisely because she studies all the time...there's a reason why she's good at magic and is so knowledgeable. I'm thinkng of doing a video going into who is or isn't a Mary Sue, because it seems the term is largely misunderstood.

    I think by arguing about the pseudo feminism in TLJ you fall into a trap, because some people were triggered by the women, mainly because it was discussed so much, the anti SJW crowd were prepared to be triggered before it was released, as the feminism was hyped up. Just ignore the gender issues and discuss why the character interactions were bad.
    There was a terrible contradiction in the bad guys being pseudo fascists doing as they are told and Poe needing to learn that if he had done what he was told and submitted unquestioningly to authority all would have been fine. His character arc was submit to authority.
    I am certain a decision was taken to put together the "best" ideas for the next two movies, but the ideas didn't work together. So some of it mirrors empire, some mirrors RTJ. Pretty sure the scene where Kylo kills Snoke was planned as a redemption for the final movie.
    My biggest complaint was that it looked like Star Wars, but everyone felt a little different. It felt very much like a Marvel movie, but using Star Wars characters so it felt off.
    Maz Kanata was the best example, in the previous film she was a wise woman, despite being a criminal. A potential mentor. In this film they have her chatting in the middle of her rootin tootin battle. Because she is such a crazy ass wild card. We may get bored if she isn't in a battle when they chat to her.
    I think not finding out who Snoke was would be OK if it was implied he was just there with the first order, but the implication in TFA was he had corrupted Kylo. that there had been contact between them. In retrospect we forget that the emperor wasn't explained in the original trilogy, but that was OK, his backstory wasn't hinted as a theme. We were given expectations of Snoke.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks  5 лет назад +4

      I don't think anyone was "triggered" by anything. People were just irritated. That word has been obscenely overused to the point of meaninglessness. Nobody had PTSD over a bad film. I'm not going to ignore an issue that was such a huge topic of discussion for the movie; that practically feels irresponsible. I don't think it was near the scale that people imagine, though. Kennedy's silly "Force is female" shirt may seem goofily divisive, but it's not like anyone in the film actually said such a thing. Rey's Mary Sue status has nothing to do with her gender, no matter how they try and spin it...Wesley Crusher was WAY worse in Next Gen.
      Problem is, I don't think much of anything was planned for these films; they've admitted more than once that they have been sort of winging it. Johnson threw out Abrams' script outline, but of course, everyone assumes that was a bad move without knowing what Abrams wrote. It might have been even worse; I don't like episode 7, either. I do imagine that eventually, though, there would have been some explanation for Snoke, which, even if we get it now, will be basically irrelevant.

    Funny how alot of TLJ's problems are related to continuity. If viewed on a completely stand-alone basis, i.e. ignoring all other Star Wars films, TLJ isn't actually that bad. But ignoring prior installments in a serialized narrative is probably not a good approach to begin with.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks

      Given that the video was running longer than my preferred length, I didn't have the chance to get into it, but I think that's probably a lot of the reasoning behind why there was such a disparity in the reactions between Star Wars fans and critics, who may well not have seen the previous installments as many times and might not have realized how radically it broke from what had come before. That said, there's still a baker's dozen issues here, such as the whole Finn/Rose/Poe subplot, which accomplises nothing plot-wise and just makes a long film longer.

    • @WooogaTooga

      I've come to regret my original comment where I implied that TLJ "ignored prior installments." After some consideration, and a few more viewings of TLJ, I now think the movie is far more in line with Lucas's mythos than I first gave it credit for. It's not perfect by any means, but I really like it for what it is. I'd probably rank it third overall in my SW movie ranking behind Empire and ANH.

    There's one film you must review if you have the chance.宇宙からのメソジ a.k.a message from space. Its a 1978 tokusatsu film made to rip off star wars

      Oh, I saw that ages ago. I do remember that it had a much better swordfight, and that the big battleship is destroyed in the end and they just lit a really large model on fire for the scene, and it looked pretty damn good. Definitely better than Starcrash, which was made for the same reason.

      We've watched Starcrash many times for its hilarity. Have you ever seen Starcrash 2? It's here on RUclips in its entirety. It's not even a real sequel; it's just a different film that reuses a lot of the Starcrash battle scenes and reuses the name, because I guess they thought Starcrash had a lot of cache built in.

      @@thekaijumaster200x3 Ice Pirates is pretty great too, a mesmerising mess of a 1980's Star Wars spoof knock-off movie that has an actually surprisingly inventive temporal paradox based fight that unfolds in real-time and is probably the most thrillingly inventive last act battle in the history of movie science fiction, only in a shonky low budget film with robot-pimps, Bruce Vilanch and the most-excellent Angelica Huston. I was drunk when I watched it by the way, so I might be hopelessly wrong.

    I really like your spiel on Rian Johnson. Talented but not the fit for Star Wars. I'm intrigued by the "what if" you threw out of him directing Solo. That could have been great.

      For example, I absolutely loved Knives Out. That's one where the subversion of expectations angle really worked. I'll happily watch more films like that-plus, if he's doing those, he won't have time for more Star Wars.

      I suppose some people function that way, but I've never seen the point. I actually liked the last two M. Night Shayamalan movies, despite the fact that he'd spent the bulk of the previous decade making some truly terrible crap. The work matters, not the creator.

    Out of all the Star Wars movies The Last Jedi was the worst! And Ryan Johnson made the worst flick in his carreer which I hope haunts him for the rest of his life.

    I degend the film as being: A Massive Troll OP by a guy who wanted to blast Disney. Artistically, nothing makes sense unless you consider the possibility that Rian is just a massive @$$hole who wanted to f*** with a megacorp's multi-billion dollar project by outright lampooning the people responsible for him being there in the first place.
    Holdo is Kathleen Kennedy, a woman ascended to a position of power for no discernable reason, with no real plan to move forward, and too stupid to realize it.
    Luke = George Lucas. Sitting at a cafeteria table bitterly meditating on the failures of the past, having cut himself off from The Force (Hollywood's limelight).
    Then there's Canto Bite. Where a guy tells you outright the *only* reason these Wars exist is to sell you toy XWings & Tie Fighters.

      Looper was the only film I had seen from Rian Johnson before TLJ and I thought it was a mess that only got worser as the movie went along. Not as messy as TLJ but his piss poor writing was clearly on display in that film.
