    Discipline and military experience in Roman army were the game changer. I THINK Jugurtha knew there was no way to defeat Rome, but chose to stand up and fight with whatever he's got that's why he offered third of his kingdom to Mauretania

    Jugurtha gained Medals in Spain under Scipio and was a commander of Roman forces for the Empire. He was good friends with Scipios faction in Rome which explains why half of the Senate supported Jugurtha. Not because he Bribed them like Sullust says. Sullust was a Propagandist for the Marcian govt. A Numidian king doesn't have enough money to bribe Rome. That's plainly ridiculous.

    • @theempiredidnothingwrong3227
      @theempiredidnothingwrong3227 4 месяца назад

      The late Republic was corrupt as hell it doesn’t matter what source you go off of they all agree on bribery being a rampant problem. Sallust may have exaggerated the extent of Jurgutha’s network doesn’t mean he didn’t have one. And it doesn’t take a ton of cash to bribe a few already corrupt senators. It’s not out of reason jurgutha did in fact manage to bribe Roman senators and there’s no counter source that states it’s a false hood so there’s no frame work to cast the whole narrative out. The most effective propaganda does in face work off of truths.

    It is absolutely amazing how many Roman battles looked hopeless for them, only for Roman discipline to make the difference by preventing rout long enough for the Roman general to take the initiative in a few decisive minutes once the opponent's organization or supply chain failed.

    • @michaelsurratt1864
      @michaelsurratt1864 2 года назад

      I would say at least 60% of their battles they were outnumbered two to one throughout the entire Roman history

    This war and the Social War really revealed just how broken the Republic had become. Since the end of the First Punic War, the Romans had conducted themselves like every other empire, but the total corruption and hypocrisy in this war and against their own allies set up the arrogance and greed displayed for 50 years thereafter until only one major player remained. Augustus stood on the shoulders of an ambitious body that almost destroyed itself.

    "History is written by the victors, who will always be the judge, and the vanquished the accused”, which is most cruelly unfair. The Romans went on and completely destroyed almost everything related to the Punic civilization that of or the ancient Berbers; the Mauretanian (+/-Morocco), the Numedian (+/- Algeria)and the Carthaginian )+/- Tunisia) which is a shame because we will never know their version of the same events, such as how much was made up, and how much was wiped out by the Romans, unfortunately.

    Jugurthine was not the man who challenged Rome for years, he was the man who brought Rome for years, laughing at the hypocrisy of the Roman political system, just as a pleb at that time would, just like a civilian of our time would at our own political system. Still, what he did was relying too much on said hypocrisy for far too long. He should have known, a bride doesn't pay everyone, and if he wish to pay bride, he has to pay everyone. Therefore, what had come to undo him is an army of people demanding for payment.

    You missed some details while you layed the grounds for the story. Like, you could have mentioned how Jugurtha sent the Romans of Albinus under the Yoke and humiliated Rome. It's actually the turning point. There were other details like a third cousin, Massiva, son of the Numidian general, Gulussa, he was another claimant to the throne who Jugurtha eventually assassinated, also in Rome. Besides, Micipsa left a long will which you didn't read.
    The Mapping is cool but the script is lacking from a Numidian point of view.

Rome promised the land to boccus to betray jugurtha, after he did, they kicked his ass. It's not strange, the betrayal was always coming from morocco.

      Winner of what...? He was carried in Rome in chain, dressed in dirty, wretched clothes, and in chain paraded in front of the chariot of Marius during the triumph, then was thrown in a hole underground of the mamertine jail, and strangled by a soldier. When they took him he was a refugee by now, wanted dead or alive... A miserabile end. And his Kingdom was split among other descendents of Massinissa who was loyal to Rome, who married with roman emperors lineage and become roman aristocrats. (With much advantage to them, and for their peoples too since the urbanization of the coastline, and the trade with Rome was source of wealth for the caravan merchants of inland. There was really no reason to fight against Rome for Jugurtha, he had many allieds within Roman senate, he could ovetthrown his cousins, and stay friend with Rome, but he tought he could kill Roman citizens without be punished, and this Is how It ended. Wanted in a desert like a rat, captured with deception, Chained, dressed like a punk, paraded trough Rome, thrown in a hole/jail in the ground of the most squallid prison of Rome, and strangled. Because the mamertine prison was a shit...no way with the treatment the nobles had usually with house arrests. It was a shit for criminals and enemies of the state. ). Vercingetorix too died there strangled years later, but at least he choosed to die so, when he surrendered to save the Life of his peoples After Alesia. (They Lost Freedom, the warriors was enslaved, but they saved their Life, to us this Is AN insult, but to them was a kind treatment After such brutal occupation warfare). There are other numidians and mauretanian rulers Who knew how to exploit Roman Alliance, and that prospered exploiting Rome. Jugurtha was the most dumb believe me...he wasted all the good results he had achieved in Spain when half Rome did support him.

      @@oskareriksson2202 he is remembered in algeria's history as a hero and a symbol of anti colonialism who cares if he was paraded in rome what matters is how they defeated him which is really a shame on the roman side because they had to use trickery to save their skin from jugurtha the romans knew they wouldn've stood a chance in a fight against him so they decided to use king Bocchus against him
      an ally jugurtha trusted yet he betrayed him without a second thought all because of some stupid piece of land which no one got in the end because the romans colonised the entirety of north africa not to mention bocchus was an idiot because if jugurtha did win he was going to give him that piece of land anyways i mean he did promise him that he'll give it to him
      Point is jugurtha is the true winner in all of this even though he was betrayed his legacy of anti colonialism was inherited by the algerians
      While bocchus's legacy of shame and betrayal was unfortunatly inherited by the moroccans
