I hope videos like this don't discourage people considering Linux. Most distros do all this legwork for you. By installing base Debian and manually installing the components, you do gain knowledge of how things work and how to install things manually, but it is not necessary in most circumstances.

Very interesting video! I expected Debian to run way smoother with gaming, even though it wouldn't be as up to date as other distros. But I didn't expect it to be that long behind.
Great job, well done, I'm impressed that you didn't give up on it despite those huge challenges. You can be proud

so, essentially. It's an Nvidia issue. using debian on an all AMD system, I can say, it all "just werks". \_:)_/

I tried it and everything was great, mostly. I've had issues with Firefox, but it wasn't really a problem. I left because of Cuda issues, I think I need to give it a second try sometime. But I can say that Debian has one big advantage - it is the best OS for 32-bit old hardware, I can't find any good alternatives (That will have an app store and can be used by people without terminal knowledge).

I was changing the parents pc over from win7 to debian yesterday and was going mad trying to get nvidia drivers installed turns out there is a bug with debian kernel 6.1.0-18 and proprietary nvidia drivers - literally impossible. not a good look when they would probably prefer win10. bug has been known since about Feb 6th, patch hasn't made it to debian stable yet (10 days later).

Yeah, I think that the culprit and key to the issue is NVIDIA driver and NVIDIA. Those problems can be seen not only on Debian but on other distributions. Until that is sorted out and only NVIDIA or now NVK (and it looks promising !) can do it those issues will go on and off like lottery. For the time being if you have NVIDIA card please use distros that support it out of the box :) I mean no harm and hate, thank you for your video! :)

Yep. Pipe wire problems are 100% also Nvidia related. How dare he use the Nvidia graphics card on the "most stable" distribution?!!? And game??? Who is even gaming in 2023, and on Linux??? Of course it's not a debian problem that their "stable" driver doesn't support the "dlss" core Nvidia function. It's Nvidia problem!! He says he tested a bunch of other distributions? No way that is true, 100% they have more problems, cause debian is the most "StABle". Should delete video asap cause Nvidia + pipe wire + gaming + debian

@@sperrex465 Yeah let's all defend the gigacorporation with our lives, someone might say a bad word about them otherwise! Who cares if they can't produce working drivers even if other companies are doing it easily? Debian should also focus all their manpower to get DLSS working even if Nvidia isn't going to help them in any way. Linux desktop is bad and broken and for NERDS unless everyone except Nvidia fixes Nvidia issues! Also why are they even using the word "stable" unless it means what I want it to mean, which is getting the newest everything no matter how proprietary it is? What's this about "stable" meaning it doesn't surprise you with changes? They should have asked ME first, ME ME ME! I define the words, not the rest of the world!

I run on Debian stable with all my apps through flatpak.
I only use the NVIDIA-drivers from the Debian repo.
I look on 2 things : installing NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIA repos, or... switching to cachyos...
But, as I use my computer to game AND to work, I don't want to manage an update who breaks the system every week...

Debian needs to modernize it's base distro otherwise it'll get stuck as the ancient 'stable' server distro. Ubuntu makes it somewhat usable as a modern desktop os but they're going down the walled garden drain and are also actively stripping out any debian part they can. Linux mint while still being based on ubuntu would love to leave canonical's headache behind and move over to a direct debian base but that'll create a lot of work for them and i wouldn't be surprised to see them move to a different actually modern base distro all together. Whats better, to be stuck on old 'stable' packages with old 'stable' bugs that don't get updated, potentially for years and compatibility issues with modern software, or recent modern packages that could potentially introduce new bugs but actually fixes them in a reasonable amount of time?
