Wow the Marantz SR8015 has been my pride and joy for a few month now. Now with such a stellar review coming from Kristi and you I am walking a little taller today. You guys are great at what you do. My wife and I would just like to say thanks for bringing a couples prospective to RUclips on HiFi and home theater equipment.
I only started watching this channel earlier this week. I have learnt a lot. As much as I can't afford a lot of these systems. I now know a lot on what to look for when the day comes. Thank You. Looking forward to more.
My first video with Andrew was a review of a Crown amp. I was stunned that he gave it a rave review, as the audio file bunch look down their noses at pro equipment. I have watched every video since that day, although I don’t always finish, as the topic of the review doesn’t interest me. My point being, Andrew never lies to get more viewers and Kristie lies less. Look back through his videos with a budget in mind and I’m sure he will line you up with a system that you will like.
@@jesseballard4753 I have gone as back as 2 years ago. I know it's a bit far. I have found the combo (pair of speakers and stereo amp) that make sense to me based on his reviews of them.
I just put a deposit on the SR7015, couldn’t justify buying Yamaha A6A with its half baked HDMI 2.1. It’s 2022 and any receiver should be 4K gaming capable IMO. I couldn’t justify going to the 8015 as I live in a condo and don’t need the channels or the power. It’s great to hear sound wise this is a great performer both for movies/gaming and music. Really enjoy your channel, keep up the great work!
I love your reviews and recommend your channel to all of my audio/video friends. Your chats with Kristi are always a treat. Please keep up the good work:)
I love my SR8015! I have not heard anything that even comes close. I did my homework and worked a few extra shift and I could not be happier! Watching any movie now is phenomenal. I hear things I never heard before! Also, I wanted to say you guys do such a great job reviewing stereo equipment and giving insight. I have learned so much! Thank you
Totally understand sticking with the RZ50 (we're still sticking with ours) but yes, the Marantz DOES work as advertised and does a lot for the money IMHO.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I'm in the middle of an AVR shuffle in the house. Moving my Yamaha TSR-700 (RX-V6A) into the living room (3.0 setup) to replace a 20 year old AVR there. The just arriving RZ50 gets my pseudo home theater/family room (5.1.2 SETUP). Then that's it for me in new audio equipment this decade...as I'm up to date and content.
I’ve been waiting for this review. I bought the SR8015 a few months ago after seeing your reviews of other Marantz products. I love everything about it including the “Marantz sound” in 2-channel stereo mode. I also use it in a 5.2.1 set-up for movies and it’s incredible. I’ve never tried Marantz before, but now I’m a believer.
Started out with a mid-tier Marantz AV receiver, then added separate amps when I started worrying that the onboard amps couldn’t drive my B&W’s. Then upgraded to the top-of-the-line AV8805 *processor* since I already had amplification taken care of. Then I upgraded to a better, multichannel amp. Each of those changes made an impactful sonic difference. Yet the internet convinced me that the Marantz’s internal DAC still stunk, so I threw a couple thousand more bucks at a trendy Holo Spring 3. And you know what? It doesn’t sound any better (without room correction) than the Marantz with Audyssey engaged, in my asymmetrical living room. Well done Marantz for putting together a really solid platform. And thanks Andrew and Kristi - please do Anthem next!
Yeah, I’d asked Andrew In another post after they had moved what mattered the most in terms of sound (room vs amplifier vs speakers) and he said the room matters the most. He and Kristi should make a video about that if they haven’t already. I have cathedral ceilings with columns and an open space and I always engage room correction.
I upgraded from the SR 7002 to the SR7015, I can say that I got the part about the set up and tweaks, bringing lots of joy. I’ve enjoyed two channel more than ever before. Marantz offers a splitter for more 8k inputs if desired. Thank you Andrew Robinson and Kristi!
We really appreciate you sharing your experience. If anyone is interested, the splitter being referenced by Carnell is this one: bit.ly/3b0QgUB Thanks for watching!
Fantastic channel, very informative, entertaining, and a very professional presentation by Andrew & Kristi, Thank you. I have almost 20 months of experience with this Marantz AVR SR8015 and I can also attest that this review is extremely accurate, and mirrors my time spent playing with it. Andrew’s quotes, “Incredible”, and, “audiophile grade performance and then some” are just spot on! I just wanted to add my experience here for others who are searching for a quality AVR to purchase. I have always coveted Marantz electronics since I was a teenager and finally the opportunity arose to purchase this one. I have had quite a few separates and receivers through out the years but this one is truly a ‘Beast’ that can handle anything you throw at it. I’ve upgraded my basement HT from an older Denon 9.1 system, which performed well for it’s time with me, to a 7.2.4 using the SR8015 and other amplifiers driving my front three (FL, C, FR) speakers. All the other surrounds and height speakers are handled by the Marantz with incredible ease. Initially I hooked up the Marantz just like Andrew, to run my whole system (without external amps) and it performed exceedingly well indeed, in all aspects. My thought process was that I would like to use this machine to reach it’s full capability of 13 channels, and add even more headroom to the front stage at the same time, by adding amplifiers I already own. I could make this all come together and possibly round out the sound field even further. I also concur with Andrew that the two apps that are available (Marantz AVR & Audyssey AVR) are tools that are a must have in your arsenal to tweak your system so it will perform to it’s fullest capacity in your own space. I have found that using Audyssey Muti EQ XT32 and limiting it’s frequency range calculations from 550HZ down to 20Hz only, along with some manual overrides, has allowed me to tailor the SR8015 so it perfectly suits my room and listening needs. I have experimented with different height channel placements and settled on 2 Front Height channels and 2 Rear Height channels instead of side surround height’s that are recommended by Auro 3D. I do use Auro-Matic (Auro 3D) up-mixer most of the time, for music and movie content that is 5.1 or 7.1 encoded unless it’s specified in the recorded material, (et: Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD MSTR) and content that is just available in stereo, I use Dolby Surround up-mixing with fantastic results. After experimenting with all the other surround formats, I found these also work well, I just personally prefer using these two. There are just so many settings and parameters to experiment with this machine, including system presets, that will allow you to accomplish any needs you might have. The SR8015 automatic detection of incoming surround signals thru HDMI has always been correct. I wasn't sure this was possible but running two channel in Pure Direct is simply sublime. It also can handle my 400 Ohm headphones run directly from the unit, as well as a 150 Ohm pair especially well, as well as my turntable. After many months of tinkering, I finally put all the tools away and have just sat back and thoroughly enjoyed stereo, movies, especially SACD’s, and multi-channel recorded music ever since. Some day I might add an additional 2 height channels (side height or FCH and voice of god) which this machine will allow with some external amplification. It does run ‘hot’, adding a cooling fan is highly recommended. My only ‘Con’ is it put a big dent in my wallet, but I must say it was money well spent, and worth every penny! Hard to put into words how well and accurately this AVR presents music and movies, but to borrow many who have already said, “Incredible sound” “very musical”, “tight & controlled”, “not at all fatiguing”, and my favorite, “audiophile grade performance and then some”, all these quotes fit the bill. From my perspective, the multi channel surround capabilities are extremely impressive and creates a tangible emotional experience. So to answer your question of the day Andrew, Yes it is possible for this Marantz to serve as the center piece of anyones HT and also serve up a stellar 2 channel listening experience. I have found myself going into the basement HT to turn on this ‘Beast’ much more often!
Thank you for describing your experience, you seem well equipped to evaluate this machine and put it to good use. It would take me a lot of time and money to figure out what you just shared and I appreciate it, although my wallet may soon have a dent in it as well!
I bought my first avr, a Marantz 5015, to go with Klipsch 600m ii. I'm waiting for the speakers to arrive. Your channel has given me the addiction. Thanks for the great content. I love both perspectives.
Loved Kristi's comment / question around the 16:00 mark about what you get in stepping up to something like this from the RZ50 and why you'd want/need to. That had been on my mind since the start of the video and it was a very well asked, and discussed question / answer. Thank you! Perfect answer.
While I don't share your expertise and knowledge, I've had my 8015 for five months. Listening to your review findings and opinions, I found myself agreeing with all of them. I chose the 8015 because the next natural step is separates. However, I feel my room would become the limiting factor with separates, but the 8015 sounds pronominal in my room and just plays well with all components attached. The 8015 is a great one box solution I will keep for some time. Great review as always, thank you.
I have Marantz AV receiver from about 7 years ago. I love it. It is paired with Paradigm Monitor 11 speakers and I only use it for straight stereo as I do not do TV. Marantz has instructions to bi wire the speakers so that the various discreet amplifiers are joined together for the high, mid, and bass drivers. Boy, is that ever fantastic. Took me forever to figure out but it was worth it. Love it. Great review, as always Andrew and Kristi!
I chose the Denon 6700 over the 8015 to save a few bucks and the 6700 has a voice control setting that I like (low setting really helps add just enough extra clarity for me). Otherwise, the specs are very similar. A huge benefit of both them is that they are very good prepro's for the price and have two setup presets. One can go full separates, fully integrated, and/or mixed (amp assignable) and also have two completely different setups in same/different rooms. I bet you can do a second followup video for just that. Also, I love having Zone 2 and 3 functions. Since all of my source contents are connected to the 6700 (HUB), I use the other zones to feed my tube amp (music) and a class D to play around with. Both the 8015 and 6700 are very versatile and have very similar functionality. Great video as always and thank you!
Thanks for posting this with such great information about the SR8015. I got a ridiculously great deal on one of these since it's on closeout and purchased one for my stepdaughter since she currently has a SR6013. I owned a SR7010 for a couple of years for a secondary system and it was a good receiver. The salesman at a local retailer recommended the Marantz over any of the other AVR that he carries. She lives in a condo and listens are low to normal volumes so this is a great upgrade for her.
I've only recently discovered your channel and I really appreciate the excellent content. I am getting ready to purchase my first stereo in nearly 30 years and so much has changed! 😳
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks! At this point, I'm on a limited budget of what I can spend on a stereo, but your recent video on $1000 systems was really helpful.
Hi, Im from Mexico, and I just finished to install my RZ50, at 7.1.4 setup, and I loved it, it exceeded my expectations. And I bought it because youre channel thanks for the incredible job guys
Insightful video, thank you A & K for making it! It helped in making my decision to buy one. Yeah it's big money and two years old now but it's going to be awesome! This is still the Marantz flagship and the Cinema's won't change that. I've been with Denon for over 35 years but I am really looking forward to Marantz taking care of any withdrawal symptoms I may experience:)
OKAY now that I seen the whole review I must say 3 things! 1 I wish I had the money to buy this receiver I've always loved Marantz but never could afford them. 2 with my denon (mid tier receiver) 🙄 I do enjoy the stereo aspect of the receiver it gets LOUD and pushes my klipsch towers to great levels, and that leads to my 3rd point the denon s960h does an okay job with the " surround part" of its job! In reality I wish I would of stuck with my old 1080p yamaha receiver until I saved enough to get something better! For me at the time it was just the fact I owned a brand name receiver 🤷🏽♂️ again awesome review!
I wish you two would make a tv show where you go to people's houses and help them get the write sound for them! Andrew you and Kristy have awesome class and love the videos
Um guys you know when the universe throws you a bone….. this is an idea that would only work with you and your partner. I made my ambeo purchase because of you. I would of paid $$$ for you and your partner to FAceTime and look at what I was dealing with before my purchase. You guys would make SO much $
Denon x8500HA is the best Receiver under $5k. Had the SR8012, SR8015 and if going down the Marantz rabbit hole, get the AV8805 and Emotiva XPA-XX on how many channels you need……then you take out the Denon. Otherwise. Denon x8500HA all day! Good review! Keep ‘em coming!
First of all, i appreciate your channel very much. Andrew. (thumbs up) I just subscribed. I am a owner of a Marantz SR8012 (the predecessor of the SR8015) purchased in 2017. It is the best AV Amp i owned to this day. I had Onkyo, Denon and Technics in my setup, but Marantz is the most "musical" of them all imo. What sometimes is really annoying is, that dealers never get tired to highlight, that AV Amps are not able to reproduce music in high quality way. I dont think so. My Marantz always did a quite good job in playing stereo and especially when i watch some movies or concert DVD´s the Marantz is playing to his specific strengths. Most dealers also said, that my Marantz cannot handle and control high end speakers. WTF ? Of course i know, that a dedicated stereo amp has certain advantages, but an AV Amp for 3000,-- Euro´s is definetly no slouch imo. What are they trying to tell me all the time ? What do you think of this topic ? Is it true, that i have to throw my AV Amp away and buy a expensive Stereo Amp, to get decent results. :( ? Or should i try it with a power amplifier that is conected to the pre out´s of my Marantz AV Amp, and use the Marantz as a Pre Amp ?
Happy Sunday. Thanks Kristi for asking about the Yamaha flagship reciever. The “coming soon” update is getting tiresome along with the HDMI port certification is just as crazy. Marantz did their homework and produced something quite special. As far as replacement of for a two channel setup, no way at least in my setup. I connect all of my music sources to my PrimaLuna EVO 400 integrated tube amp and the sound is much better IMO. Besides these AV receivers don’t accommodate a MC phono cartridge. So if you are mainly a home theater user, who sprinkles in a little 2 channel, then an AV receiver is No brainer. I just happen to be the opposite.
Excellent review!!! Indeed very powerful receiver. Paired with monolith x7 amp and im absolutely blown away how amazing this thing sounds all together. Definitely worth the price in my opinion. Purchased while it was around little over 3k.
When I purchased mine I was in the idea of getting higher end without the crazy price tag. I have them connected to 4 Focal sopra N 3 towers that make up my 5.2 surround sound system in my tv room. I love the receiver have no negative comments about it . Best purchase ever made in my beginning of music and tv watching experience.
I am glad you brought up the X6700h in the end of your review because on the surface it does seem like the X6700h and the SR8015 are apples to apples. I don't believe they are as you hinted at given the price differences but I haven't heard the SR8015 in my setup. I had the Denon X6700h in my 7.1.4 room pushing Polk RTi A9 fronts, CSi A6 center, FXi A6 surrounds, and RTi A5 rears. The room is fairly large (roughly 15 x 27 x 8) and found the X6700h lacking the juice needed to push all 11 speakers at once, especially the A9 fronts. It wasn't until I added an Emotiva XPA 2 (second gen) for the front LR and the Emotiva BAS-X 3 (center/surrounds), did the sound truly leave me giddy like the Marantz appears to have done. I do think the Denon X6700h is fully capable of being a one stop solution in a smaller space but it may not as capable to the extent that the Marantz SR8015 is. I do LOVE my Denon X6700h and would not consider trading it in for the Marantz. This review in a way confirms my purchase now that I added extra juice to the Denon. I haven't dug into the Audyssey settings as much but can't wait to after seeing this. Side note - I have both Xbox Series X and PS5 connected via an 8K switch and have no issues with my setup.
I’ve had an SR7015 for a long time, and now an AV8805 Processor. Everything you say about Marantz here is spot on, but one thing you miss, and likely couldn’t cover in a review in any case, is reliability. These things are rock solid. Unlike other brands where products can be buggy for years after release, and users gag for firmware updates, Marantz units tend to just work, consistently and reliably. That means a lot, and worth quite a premium in the long run. When are we getting the Wharfdale Elysium review? I think that might be my next move and I need your OK to start saving!
But if they were so solid, wouldn't they come with a 5-year warranty like they used to for half the price with the same power toroidal supply and copper-lined chassis they offered 10 years ago? If anything, if Sound United had made strides in reliability, they would have extended the reliability beyond 5 years as that would offer them a competitive advantage. The fact that they reduced it to a fraction indicates that there's a significant number of units that are likely to fail between years 3-5 and they're not confident backing the product up. Surely you've heard of United Radio - the company that repairs Marantz's receivers 😀 We all know it as well as we know Best Buy or Crutchfield.
@Tech Samurai. Your speculation may be right, but I can only report on concrete evidence from my own experience and, compared to what I read from owners of some other brands, (emotiva and arcam to name 2), I'm glad I haven't been in those boats for the past few years. Also, I really don't know much about those companies you mention and assume we all know. We're not all unfortunate enough to be American, you know 😊
@@mediaserver8265 I see what you mean - you're referring to the product being complete after release. Yeah, that should not be a thing for any company especially for flagship products. All these companies have been making AV receivers for a long time and they've had HDMI for 20 years with HDMI specs changing often sometimes every 1-2 years. In fact HDMI 2.1 is probably the longest running version so these companies (5 years) have had the longest time to be able to handle it. No product should be released in a half-finished state. Imagine if your speakers' tweeter didn't work upon the product's release or the cable connection in the back needed a firmware upgrade before you could hear sound 😀 It's a bit crazy that we're applauding companies for having a product that works nowadays but costs double as the same product and has half the warranty. What's next? Are we going to applaud someone for jogging across the 100 meter line in 20 seconds and shout Usain Bolt?
Another great review, thank you both for all the work you put into it. Y’all are hands down the best. To expand on the comparison of RZ 50 and a higher end AVR like the Marantz 8015 does the quality of speakers you own also come into play in the diminishing return discussion? Basically, can you out spend your speakers and/or not be able to achieve the performance potential a higher end AVR can provide?
The price differential between the RZ50 and 8015 is massive. The RZ50 has more power than the 8015 but it's not a toroidal. It has an issue with 4 ohm speakers but is fine with 8 ohm speakers. I own one 8001, and two 8002 which have the same power supply and fewer channels and as a result more power per channel and probably better electronics. I'm not sure I'd purchase the 8015 at this price point.
@@techsamurai11 Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. Your comment is very helpful as I continue to learn more about home audio. I currently have an older Marantz SR7011 which started to have front channel issues so added an Emotiva external amp which seemed to solve things for a while but more issues are starting to pop up so figured it is time to start looking to replace. The RZ 50 is attractive mostly because of Dirac and it Sonos integration but don’t want to take a step backwards in sound quality so trying to learn as much as I can before pulling the trigger.
@@paulgross682 you're bringing up another excellent topic. Reliability, warranty, and total cost of ownership. Your unit is pretty new and shouldn't have that many issues especially as it was the flagship at the time since Marantz had discontinued the 8000 series after the 8002. My 4 Marantz units had 5 year warranties instead of 3 and sold for half price despite having the same power supply and I suspect sound quality. A 5 year warranty is many times better than a 3 year because a disproportionate number of units fail after the 3rd year. They all needed repairs especially display failure and blinking lights after losing power but nothing like what you're experiencing. A repair of an avr like the 8015 must run between $500 and $1,000 assuming they have parts which is a topic of its own. The 8015 needs cooling as it runs too hot to last a long time. I'm in the same boat and don't want to downgrade but the RZ50 seems like the more reasonable choice. In surround, it'll sound the same and offer eArc which will play better sound than Arc. It's more disposable in case of repair.
I agree 100% that a really well designed AVR can hang with some of the top 2 channel performers out there. I will say I own an Arcam AVR30, and the level of control that beast has on my speakers is astonishing. I’ve always loved Marantz, I owned an SR6011 previously and often recommend them as I do design home theaters, the Arcam has my heart now. Would love to see you compare that to the SR8015 and see how well the Marantz holds it’s own. My guess is quite well and may be the best option for almost everyone out there looking for too tier performance, but like you mentioned in the video I had to know I was leaving nothing on the table and went another route. Keep up the great work!
That Arcam is at or near the top of current AVRs available. Class G seems to be amazingly powerful. I have a traditional Class AB Arcam AVR300 from 2006, and it still sounds fantastic and powerful with my JBL HDI 3800’s 🔊
@@jstoli996c4s For sure. Class G was a game changer for me. Funny thing is my Focal 948s were running off of a Marantz MM7055 dedicated amp and this AVR blows it out of the water. On paper the Marantz should win with more power and being an amp only, but the Class G makes all the difference in my opinion.
Maybe you should take a look at the Denon X8500HA in comparison to the Marantz 8015. It is marginally more powerful, has 13 channels of amplification and is Denon's semi-flagship, sitting below the A110 which is a limited-edition anniversary version of the same machine with additional refinements. I have been using the X8500H (previous model without the 8k upgrade) and find its sound-quality "airy" and neutral...though lacking the sheer heft of the Denon A-1 which it replaced when the latter broke down. By the way, when may we expect your review of the Wharfedale Elysians?
So I was searching for a SR8015 review from you after your Emotiva mono block video, and I found out there wasn’t any. Half a day later you posted this video. 😂 Thanks!
I thought long and hard about this Marantz, but I’m not a fan of Audyssey and I think it’s a shame that a product this expensive doesn’t have a better screen. I also thought about the Anthem MRX 1140 and 740 and even the Onkyo RZ-50. I just couldn’t wait any longer and I went with the NAD T778. I love its screen, Dirac, and I like its sound. It’s 85W all nine channels driven by the way.
I am considering the NAD t778 at the moment. What front speakers do you use with it, and how do you think it performs in 2-channel? This Marantz could be an option, but it seems to run hot, and I'm planning on having the receiver in my media bench, and I'm thinking the NAD would produce much less heat.
@@hannie1301 Hello, I run the T778 in my home theater with Arendal 1961s, but I do listen to some two-channel music in there from time to time and it performs well. It does not run very hot either.
Just bought my first receiver second hand it is an older Yamaha model so looking for speakers for it now but came across this channel and enjoying what I have seen so far 👍
@@timharbert7145thanks man am new to all this but even plugged it up to my PreSonus 3.5 monitors it sounds great for movies but I want some other speakers for movie nights
Some of the main differences between Denon X6700H and Marantz SR8015 are the DACs, amplifiers, motherboard and power supply. These components are of better quality in Marantz.
I gotta, say this A&K channel is kind of inspiring... Ok definitely is, But DAMN IT MAKES SHOPPING SO HARD!!! sooooo many good options. This channel did help me pick out my GFs turntable and powered speaker option, to that I say thank you because it was really difficult.
I ordered one of these for a client way back in the end of December. I’m still waiting on it. When they talk about chip shortages and shipping issues, they mean this receiver.
Really? I know one of our links in the description shows the unit as being temporarily OOS but the other two are most definitely available now. This is far easy to get than the RZ50 though. But yes, supply shortages are a real PIA.
Yeah, it’s expensive and you do have to be wary of failure after the 3 year warranty expires. My 4 Marantz AV receivers had 5 year warranties and all of them needed repairs. The repair cost will easily be close to the $1,000 mark. You have to include a repair in your price. This unit technically retails for $5,000.
I recently purchased the 8015 and will hold off my first impressions until I have extensive time with it. I'll just say this: I was able to pick one up for $,1999 and for that price there is simply nothing better out there as I write this.
Yeah I was able to get lucky and find one for $1,700 but weirdly the price went up to $2,500 so I think it might have accidentally been marked with the wrong price on Amazon. Unfortunately I'm having to return it because in the process of setting it up the video output was fine initially and then started not showing up
The preamp mode of the Marantz does appear to be mildly "superior" to that of the Onkyo, though the Onkyo does give you DIRAC, which in my opinion does produce better results in terms of room correction over Audyssey. So regardless of the outboard amp pairing your decision is likely going to come down to OTHER factors and not how the two compare straight up.
I have owned 4 Marantz AV receivers over 20 years including 3 of the 8000 (2 are in operation). I started with the 5002, then moved to the 8001 and then bought 2 8002s at a discontinued price. The 8001, 8002 have the same power supply as the 8015 but they have more power per channel (fewer electronics) and don't get as hot. I love Marantz but I find the 8015 way overpriced as it's nearly double the price with no power improvement. If you have a store nearby, I would definitely audition the RZ50 side-by-side with the 8015. And the reason I believe I'd do that is because after buying the 8002, I auditioned Marantz separates and I didn't hear much of a difference. I also auditioned the venerable Yamaha RX-Z11 that weighed 75lbs and cost $5,000 which was supposed to compete with the Denon 5806 (weighs nearly as much as a Rolls Royce and requires a crane for placement). Again, I thought the Marantz with my B&W 703s sounded as fantastic playing Michael Buble's bombastic I'm Feeling Fine as the Yamaha did with twice as expensive speakers (the Focal Electra BE 1028). My point is if the 8002 which was graded Audiophile level by Marantz could hold its own against Marantz separates and a 75lb Yamaha behemoth, then I figure the RZ50 might be able to hold its own against the 8015 especially since it has more power than the 8015, albeit EI vs toroidal. This is my own take of 20 years listening to about 80,000 hours of the Marantz flagship receivers 😀 Now I've asked (begged) Marantz to make a 7.2 in the $2,500 range with the exact same specs as the 8015 just fewer channels and I'd love to see some very stylish (level meters) on it. I think that would be a superb product that would entice a lot of people to switch to Marantz.
@@ManuelMedellin. RZ50 is 1,400. SR7015 is 3,000. I would try the RZ50 long before I bought the 7015 and 8015 unless money has no value to you. You could also go the RZ50 route and use an external amp to power the front 2-3 speakers without spending more money. You’re left with an external amp that should last you a long time.
Great QOD. I have switched back to using an AVR for 2 channel as well. I feel like the HDMI input is the game changer here. Makes everything so much simpler to use one controller that just works. I really like what I have read here about using the AVR as a preamp. Caught that also in your BASX video, and it has been marinating in my head for a while now. Now to find the right amp. Thanks for the great video and convo.
Great review, Andrew - AV receivers are so overlooked. I recently streamlined my living room setup down to a Sonos system, which looks great and actually sounds pretty good, but it left me with a lot of old gear that wouldn’t fit. The most logical solution for pulling all of my spare parts together was getting an Onkyo home theater receiver - it even has a phono input. I put the Onkyo in my office with a set of Klipsch reference bookshelf speakers to run my Apple TV, turntable, X-Box, PS4, and a vintage PS3 and PS2. The performance and functionality is surprisingly cutting edge - but I think the biggest advantage is that there’s still so much untapped potential for upgrades later. In fact, I’m looking for a compact subwoofer under $400 if anyone has recommendations. Cheers!
I’m curious how this compares to the Denon X6700H or the Yamaha RX-A8. These would be my top three choices. Also does the SR8015 now come with an updated HDMI board? Or did you need the adapter box?
I have been looking forward to this review, and it was excellent! Thank you for the 2-channel comparisons. I purchased the Marantz 40n based largely on your review (and a couple of other people I also respect), and I really considered the 8015 hard when making that decision. I used to focus on HT and also use my HT receiver for music with decent results. When getting back into the hobby, I decided to focus on music and also use the integrated for 2.1 movies, and the 40n has proven great for that. Based on this review, and my recent experience with the current crop from Marantz, I might give the 8015 a shot as a “do it all” unit if I was getting a new amp/receiver and already had a full Atmos speaker compliment. As it is, my plan is to join an rz50 with my 40n (which together are only a little more than the 8015), if we decide to go full Atmos in the future. P.S., as a long-time Yamaha guy who still owns a prior flagship Yamaha integrated, I also prefer the Marantz over the current Yamaha line based on both aesthetics and performance. We are fortunate to have such great options in the market right now (supply shortages aside).
I always find myself in that same tug of war, a 2.1 system or the full AVR experience? With receivers and integrated amps increasingly coming with HDMI eARC inputs a 2.1 system becomes increasingly tempting.
@@BryanRuby I went from a very good older 7.1 set up to a Bose 700 with sub and surrounds for a less intrusive footprint, and then to the Model 40n with various speakers tried in a 2.1 configuration. I would say the Model 40n with 2.1 is more enjoyable for HT than the soundbar and surrounds. eARC has been great in both set-ups, and for whatever it's worth, I have not missed the surround channels as much as I thought I would. I actually prefer the front sound stage of the 2.1 design when using mains that provide good center imaging vs using a center speaker. For action films especially, it is obviously not the same experience with no rear channels, but I found that sometimes rear effects channels could be a pleasant distraction for me from the overall cinematic experience. My wife also loves the speaker non-proliferation of 2.1. That said, having great 2-channel capability, plus the ability to do full Atmos when desired seems like the ultimate jam, and as Andrew and Kristi indicated, the 8015 can do that. I would think even harder about it if I was starting over in my system building process after hearing Andrew discuss its 2-channel performance.
Thx for the review. I was thinking of the denon avc-x4700h or the Marantz sr 7015. Because of the big prise deferance i have now the Denon. I. Really happy whith it, comming from Yamaha .
As fan fanboy and owner of this era of Marantz products, i can attest that this review is really accurate when paired w/my experiences. Although my preamp is a couple years older, the menus and functions appear the same. I can’t speak to the amplifier power or sonic qualities in this receiver, but i can say both Andrew’s and Kristi’s experience’s with the Marantz’ functionality mirrors my experience. And its not ugly. I do like the look. Cheers and happy Sunday everyone!!!
Appreciate you weighing in Audio Tron! It's always nice to hear when we get it right, especially from other people with the same equipment. Have a great rest of your day!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews yup! I and i feel like much less of an amateur when i hear you two saying what im already thinking. Some people think subscribers, consumers, and fans like to have their pre conceived opinions reinforced. I like it when agreement happens based on real world experience. Its cool. And thanks again for the pick me up last week. Means a lot.
I would be wary I purchased the 8015 and right when I was getting it set up with some of my older component gaming systems and laser disc player the visual signal suddenly cut out and I couldn't get it back
QoTD: I can somewhat answer this question, as I have the SR8015 and Audiolab 8300A + 8300MB’s; there is no discernible difference between the two, at their price points, on my speakers (Kef R7) and in my room. I did a blind A/B test with my FiL and he couldn’t tell the difference either. Thanks for another great review and adding some validity to what I had already suspected with its 2 channel ability.
I would say, and Ive not used this unit, but at $3800.00 vs $1499.00 for the RZ50, I would stay with the RZ50 and if needed, an amp to add such as the BassX-5 would be cheaper. And no Dirac Live? For $3800.00? I would pass. But what a great video Andrew and Kristi.
I admit, I prefer DIRAC too, but Audyssey is an option so I don't fault Marantz too much here. That said, on the value front, the RZ50 (with or without an outboard amp) is still the king.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks Andrew - at 9.2 channels and Dirac, although the Marantz is nice, that " law of diminishing returns" comes to mind and keeps me in the Onkyo corner.
Thanks Andrew. When are you going to tackle Anthem receivers and pre/pros? I think their ARC (Anthem Room Correction) is phenomenal and the flexibility of their hardware makes setup for various configurations of stereo and surround.
Loved the video I do appreciate all the comparisons. Really enjoy insights even when it’s not the sort of thing I’d probably buy. Glad you mention convenience and ease of set up which can often be forgotten in the pursuit of sound quality but which is worth it’s weight in gold.
Hey Andrew and Kristi..... Currently I view your channel out of interest... I recently upgraded a few things and I'm quite satisfied with the results. I viewed all sorts of RUclips A/V reviewers and eventually added the Denon A110 AVR to my existing OPPO and 7125 Outlaw set up. As you know the A110 is the anniversary model built on the Denon 8500 HA platform. I'm incredibly happy with the performance... I agree with some of the comments.. How about a head to head comparison of this Marantz to the Denon 8500HA? Oh, I added am Aircom fan to my Denon.. I think it's a great component to consider..
It's easy! The Marantz comes with a better DAC; The Denon doesn't. So if you're a music buff get the Marantz, if not you can get by with the Denon. Simple answer....
I own this receiver, and couldn't agree more. 7.4.2 system with Paradigm Studio 100's, (2) SVS SB-16's, Paradigm surrounds, and 4 ATMOS Speakers, and with two surround backs. Amazing receiver and I love having the ability to do different setups with Preset 1 & 2 on. One thing that the review didn't cover was the ability to run a second zone 4k video in a different room. It gives me the ability to run a different system with a add amp in zone 2. I also use the HEOS app for zone three to all of my speakers outside. This receiver will do everything you need it to do and the versatility it gives you is top notch. All my speakers outside run off a Big Bang amp from Speakercraft.
Agree 100%. Based on Andrew’s I purchased Onkyo’s TX RZ-50 with Dirac Live and it’s pretty good. I upgraded from Marantz 5012 and the sound quality is much better with Onkyo calibrated with Dirac. My question to Andrew is: how do you compare the sound between the RZ50 and the 8015?
When you dig into the specs as you climb the ladder of these Marantz and Denon AVR models, you find improving versions of Audessey and higher performance DAC’s and processing chips, along with better quality power supplies and amplification (where most of the Marantz/Denon differences lie).
marantz cinema 40 vs sr8015 I'm torn between these two products. The SR8015 is about half a million dollars cheaper. I'm looking for a better AV receiver for music as I often use 2-channel stereo. I want to find a better AV receiver Mr. Andrew, which one would you choose? I was wondering which model you would recommend.
Firstly I would like to say I love the channel with all the great reviews on products plus helpful how to info! I would of said no regarding using an av for two channel hi fi until I recently added an emotiva basx a3 to my avrx3600h. The sound is amazing, I never thought it would be better that my a85 arcam! I would say though the 3600h does not have the ability to produce high end audio on it's own. Keep up the good work on the channel. Best from over the pond, Pete
Yes - I have run stereo and AV components, integrated and receiver systems Apart from driving tough loads and very high volume - I just love a good AV receiver with the right settings for each use readily available - and then relaxes and enjoy The best Sony receivers have had that secret sauce for those who learned the controls - and when fiddling was too much, I found that getting all the settings right And Then using AFD would make me smile every time (auto format decode)… when I wanted to be surrounded in sound I would switch on a Cinema mode EX - even on stereo - and be happy Fiddling - tweaking levels - and searching for the right levels could bring even better sound across the spectrum from stereo to 5.1 and beyond, but not fiddling was very good already
Hi Andrew and Kristi, great review as always, can you confirm if your Marantz SR8015 is build in 2022? it seems that in 2021 they have changed the internal DAC of all Marantz and Denon because the factory that supplied the old DAC caught fire, Denon and Marantz did confirm this in their website from Japan, I know your review is from 2022, but maybe you got a old model, so if you could confirm that the SR8015 is from 2022 it would be awesome, many folks in the internet is saying that the new DAC doenst have the same quality from the old DAC and that the receiver got a downgrade in sound quality. The new DAC that they are using (acording to rumors because i didnt find this information on their website, even from japan or north america) is the PCM5102a , and the old one is the AKM4458, i know that they really have changed the DAC because it is on their official japan website. Love your reviews guys, thanks for all the amazing content and help for choosing products.
Hi Andrew and Kristi, just saw that i can see the model number of the sr8015 in the back panel on your video, it seems that already has the new polemic DAC, now i can buy a denon or marantz with peace of mind knowing that even with the new DAC is a awesome product, I think people saying that could hear a difference in audio quality because of the DAC are just doing FOMO in the internet
@@kev3226 the AKM DAC are only available on older Marantz or Denon, only if you buy a used one to get that DAC, and it will have the problem that HDMI 2.1 doesn’t work, after may 2021 only the new DACs are available on marantz and denon, and the HDMI 2.1 problem is solved, some people say the new DAC is worse then the AKM DAC, but honestly I think is going to be hard to someone hear a difference in sound quality, so you should be fine buying a new marantz with the new DAC
Not lying about the app. AV7706 and SR6014 here. I use the Marantz and Heos apps almost daily. Very user friendly and makes the whole user experience better
Thank you both for a great review. I have been very encouraged to see your endorsement of AVRs as viable means of getting excellent stereo listening! Would love to hear your opinion of the Marantz AV processors in comparison or Denon x8500.
My RZ 50 just shipped, and ill admit I was mad at the beginning of this video, until I saw the price and got over it. QOTD: I think for 98% of listening an AVR can do more than what a 2 channel setup can.
I agree with you but who cares. I only use that interface when I am configuring the system and then forget about it's existence. The rest of the time I use the app if needed.
Added four Def Tec 9080 surrounds to my 9080 center, front and height last year and needed to upgrade my Yamaha receiver for the additional channels. Chose the Marantz SR6015; same basic features but less power. My listening room is 13' x 19' x 8' and this receiver still more than fills the connecting enclosed patio, kitchen and dining room with power to spare. Doesn't matter whether the sound is Godzilla in Dolby or Louis Armstrong vinyl in 2-channel, the sound is great.
Absolutely not!!!! Marantz yes decent. I bought the flagship amp the AV8802A which was over $5000. The amp had something happen to it just conveniently after the warranty expired and marantz will do nothing to help. I sent it in they said they could fix it, kept it for 3 months and the. Said they couldn’t it was a brick and I’m on my own. I asked if they could help with the purchase of a replacement and they said no. I’ll never ever buy marantz again. Horrible company

Yes, an AV receiver can be a home theatre and two channel champ. For most people it has to be from a cost standpoint alone.
Been using an AVR as a preamp for hometheater and music listening (I prefer a multichannel music listening experience) since 2010....love it.

@@jlutell AVRs often make great preamps! Especially when hifi companies are afraid of new tech 😉
In theory, a AV receiver should be able to sound better than many stereo amps due to room correction.
Have you ever ran five channels without a subwoofer and how did it sound I'm getting ready to push the order on one right now
I only started watching this channel earlier this week. I have learnt a lot. As much as I can't afford a lot of these systems. I now know a lot on what to look for when the day comes. Thank You. Looking forward to more.
We're so glad you're here! Thanks for watching!
He s a good guy. He also does some great stuff with budget opinions.
A&K Audio is easily my favorite home audio review channel. Go back and catch up, you will be very pleased
We really appreciate that. Thank you.
Thank you
What speakers are you driving with it?
On my budget, I think I remain on Team Onkyo TX-RZ50. No matter which you choose, it's refreshing that in 2022 the AVRs actually work as advertised.
Then
upgraded to the top-of-the-line AV8805 *processor* since I already had amplification taken care of.
Good point on the splitter. Glad to hear you're enjoying your AVR! Thanks for watching!
We really appreciate you sharing your experience. If anyone is interested, the splitter being referenced by Carnell is this one: bit.ly/3b0QgUB
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
THANK YOU!
I bought my first avr, a Marantz 5015, to go with Klipsch 600m ii. I'm waiting for the speakers to arrive. Your channel has given me the addiction. Thanks for the great content. I love both perspectives.
Awesome! I hope you love your system. Those speakers are great!!
Loved Kristi's comment / question around the 16:00 mark about what you get in stepping up to something like this from the RZ50 and why you'd want/need to. That had been on my mind since the start of the video and it was a very well asked, and discussed question / answer. Thank you! Perfect answer.
It's one of the most honest and faithful representations of such a rich and often complicated range of technology.
I like your invention of the word "pronominal". It makes perfect sense to me!
A new viewer here and I thought your review was very detailed and useful. In particular I found Kristi’s input very helpful and informative.
Welcome aboard!
She lives in a condo and listens are low to normal volumes so this is a great upgrade for her.
yep there are some good prices on these now.

Yeah, I am surprised as well. Really thought Yamaha would have had it all worked out by now.
Purchased this today on a great sale because of your review. Thank you for your insight.

Love the review. It’s a darn shame Marantz didn’t include Dirac. For my home theater only needs, I’ll stick to my RZ50.
I’m running the 8015 for a few years now and I absolutely love it plenty of power to run my Martin Logan esl electrostatic’s and the sound is awesome!
Kristi asked all the questions a novice like me would ask. I think she is a mind reader!
Excellent review!!! Indeed very powerful receiver. Paired with monolith x7 amp and im absolutely blown away how amazing this thing sounds all together. Definitely worth the price in my opinion. Purchased while it was around little over 3k.
That Center speaker is HUUGGGEEE. Great review again
Massive!
Seriously huge. Or should that be needlessly?
@@SeanVedell That's really up to the individual to decide. It's definitely the best center I've ever heard.
@@KristiWright fair enough. Not having heard it my comment was only based on looks. Not that my wife would let speakers that big into the living room.
Now I'm itching to hear your take on SR8015 vs AV8805A prepro and separates route.
I was eagerly awaiting this one :)
Enjoy!
Excellent review, but maybe Kristi forgot Denon's flagship AVR-X8500H. That would be a fair comparison against the Marantz flagship.
Yes I’m leaning towards Denon 8500 H myself
Imagine if your speakers' tweeter didn't work upon the product's release or the cable connection in the back needed a firmware upgrade before you could hear sound 😀
It's a bit crazy that we're applauding companies for having a product that works nowadays but costs double as the same product and has half the warranty.
Sony SSCS5 with a Schiit Modi DAC. I've an older, not vintage, Yamaha and truly enjoy CD playing thru the above. TV/Roku sounds great too.

Some of the main differences between Denon X6700H and Marantz SR8015 are the DACs, amplifiers, motherboard and power supply. These components are of better quality in Marantz.
That's about the whole amplifier is different / would be better😆
I gotta, say this A&K channel is kind of inspiring... Ok definitely is,
But DAMN IT MAKES SHOPPING SO HARD!!!
sooooo many good options.
This channel did help me pick out my GFs turntable and powered speaker option, to that I say thank you because it was really difficult.
:) Really appreciate that, James!
These are £1600 here in the UK right now !!
But yes, supply shortages are a real PIA.
i felt guilty spending 2k on my total HT audio setup but when i see these price tags I think i did ok :P
Unfortunately I'm having to return it because in the process of setting it up the video output was fine initially and then started not showing up
what about the RZ50 with your 2 Emotiva monoblocks versus the Marantz SR8015?
I've tried both. The marantz is far superior.
It was with a pioneer elite 505, which is very similar to the rz50
The preamp mode of the Marantz does appear to be mildly "superior" to that of the Onkyo, though the Onkyo does give you DIRAC, which in my opinion does produce better results in terms of room correction over Audyssey. So regardless of the outboard amp pairing your decision is likely going to come down to OTHER factors and not how the two compare straight up.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Thanks for the clarification and insight! great video :)
@@charlesking678 thanks for the response!
I just bought the SR5015 so fingers crossed they did well in the entire SR line
I think you're going to be just fine.
This is my own take of 20 years listening to about 80,000 hours of the Marantz flagship receivers 😀
Now I've asked (begged) Marantz to make a 7.2 in the $2,500 range with the exact same specs as the 8015 just fewer channels and I'd love to see some very stylish (level meters) on it. I think that would be a superb product that would entice a lot of people to switch to Marantz.
Real question is, Onkyo RZ 50 for 1299 $ or Marantz SR 7015 for 1699 $ which one to go for ?

@andrew robinson - do you recommend buying Marantz SR8015 in Jul2024 as they are on sale or should I get a cinema 30?
I have the DENON AVR-X6700H it is great.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this one. Really appreciate your view!
Please review Anthem MRX 1140. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it 💪
Anthem doesn't want to play nice with Andrew. He has tried to get them to send a unit more than a few times. They just ignore him.
Good afternoon all! And hello from Philly this week.
Morning! Always a pleasure to spend the morning with you Roy!
I'd gladly trade 8k for 9.X.6 any day of the week and twice on Sundays. As good as it sounds it doesn't bring the goods.
That kind of price and only 1 8k, 2.1 hdmi port? That's a hard pass.
I Just Got My Onkyo RZ50 And I LOVE It DIRAC Is Definitely A Game Changer
DIRAC is A-MAZING! I wish it was present on the Marantz, I really do.

Marantz sr8015 or yamaha rx a8a? Guys what you think?
Marantz SR7015 for me, Yamaha has trouble with there software update thank you!
It all comes down to how the receiver matches with your current speakers
Yes - I have run stereo and AV components, integrated and receiver systems
Apart from driving tough loads and very high volume - I just love a good AV receiver with the right settings for each use readily available - and then relaxes and enjoy
The best Sony receivers have had that secret sauce for those who learned the controls - and when fiddling was too much, I found that getting all the settings right And Then using AFD would make me smile every time (auto format decode)… when I wanted to be surrounded in sound I would switch on a Cinema mode EX - even on stereo - and be happy
Fiddling - tweaking levels - and searching for the right levels could bring even better sound across the spectrum from stereo to 5.1 and beyond, but not fiddling was very good already
@@PauloPHGTA So which DAC is better in the SR8015? I am seriously considered buying and now confused.
Yamaha RX-A8A Dual SABRE ES9026 PROs and Yamaha is known for there music playback a reliability
Marantz all day! Fantastic review. Fantastic AVR.
Couldn't agree more!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Keep it up!
mine is SR5014!😢
Not lying about the app. AV7706 and SR6014 here. I use the Marantz and Heos apps almost daily. Very user friendly and makes the whole user experience better
Please review the Marantz cinema 50 and 60. !!!!!!
He already did the 50
Thank you both for a great review. I have been very encouraged to see your endorsement of AVRs as viable means of getting excellent stereo listening! Would love to hear your opinion of the Marantz AV processors in comparison or Denon x8500.
🎯 Before you go, please give the video a 👍. It really helps! Thanks so much for watching.
My RZ 50 just shipped, and ill admit I was mad at the beginning of this video, until I saw the price and got over it.
QOTD: I think for 98% of listening an AVR can do more than what a 2 channel setup can.
Hey, you're one of the few who seem to be able to get one. I think you'll be happy!
It's already 2022, but AV receivers, even the high end ones, still have an ugly, outdated graphic interface. 😅
Sadly true...
I agree with you but who cares. I only use that interface when I am configuring the system and then forget about it's existence. The rest of the time I use the app if needed.
Got the Onkyo 6100 factory refurbished $640. 100w 7.2.2 Q Acoustics all around. SVS. Sounds great. Ignorance is bliss
Onkyo RZ 50 seems to be better and muuuuuch cheaper.
