Supertramp Goodbye stranger reaction. This is one of those songs that you hear once and just doesnt leave your head!
I thought the song was about a one night stand. But i have since read that some think its about drugs or religion. The beauty of music.
Enjoy the reaction.
Breakfast in America is a perfect album. Glad you discovered Supertramp!
I wore this album out!
One of the greatest guitar solos's ever recorded.
A great outro and bass line too. CHeers.
Supertramp.... YES!!.....I have had the extreme pleasure of seeing “The Tramp” LIVE 4 times. They are musical geniuses on every song they do. Rick Davies - Favorite Piano Player…. John Helliwell - Favorite Sax Player
You have a wonderful personality for communicating. I enjoy your reaction videos very much. This particular Supertramp song has one of the most incredible outros I have ever heard ...... It gives me goosebumps every time .....
The Logical Song and Take the Long Way Home are my two favorites from them
Logical is next
@@HarriBestReactions The best songs are still to come, check out "School" "Rudy" "Boody Well Right" "Dreamer"
Yes - and "School" -
What about Fools Overture thats my favorite.
I wonder why hardly anyone never mentions CANNONBALL, the bass line is sooo good . Should be on the list IMO.
Just listened to cannonball loved the beginning.
Great review Harri. This song, Goodbye Stranger, was written by Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies, of the band Supertramp. Imagine being a teenager in 1979 and hearing this on the radio, so cool. Although Supertramp has not toured for some time, Roger Hodgson still tours the world AND sounds as great as ever with his current band. Roger plays all the hits that you love and have listened to your entire life. If Roger should come to a city near you, go see him. Roger's concerts are 2 hours of incredible, magical music that will take you back to a fantastic era in music.
It's too bad they don't make great songs like this anymore. You can hear all the work they've put into creating this, I love love love the harmonies.
Always present for Supertramp.
42 years ago that would make me 27 on March 29th 1979 was the release date of Breakfast in America by Supertramp. This was one of my most favorite albums they recorded.
Hide in Your Shell, Loverboy and Even In The Quietest Moments for me. Best concert I've ever attended.
Remember exactly where I was when I was obsessed with this group. My little red Subaru, had the cassette tape. Young newlyweds moved to the Rockies. Listened to it during my lunch break. 50th anniversary in a few years. ❤️❤️❤️
Breakfast in America = really good 70's pop rock album , Crime of the Century = One of the best records ever made.
Many people think the Breakfast in America album is one of the greatest albums ever made. It's all just opinion and very subjective.
@@alrivers2297 of course music is 100% subjective. But in this case the difference is pretty clear (not in a good/bad way). Breakfast in America is pop rockier and a bit more cheerful and lighter. Crime of the Century is largely much more cynical, darker in tone. CotC songs are also a bit more prog, where most of BiA are tighter focused tunes. It's kind of like arguing Dire Straits Making Movies vs Love Over Gold. Both great records. I vastly prefer LoG for the virtually the identical reasons I like CotC over BiA.
On the album cover, LIBBY, the waitress with her orange juice/statue of LIBERTY with her torch, perched in front of a food, condiment, and cutlery Manhattan skyline...as seen thru the round corner of a jet window, is an incredible piece of visual art that ties in with the album title in a totally profound yet very playful way...absolute genius.
Thank you for diving down the Supertramp rabbit hole, Harri - you will never regret it! After The Logical Song, which rumour has it you are doing next, it is time to get to the album "Crime of the Century" and as many songs off of that classic LP as you can manage! School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy, If Everyone Was Listening, Crime of the Century. You will never be the same after that album!! Thanks for all the enjoyment and musical inspiration you bring to so many via your channel!
I was eight years of age when this album was released. My older sister purchased the LP but I ended up “stealing” it because I played it constantly, LOL.
In Late 1979, my dad unexpectedly died. During my grief and shock, I would play this album for comfort.
Because of that experience, “Breakfast In America” holds a special place in my heart.
Even today, when I need some comfort, I will play the album. Except I play it on my phone, instead of a record player. 😂
I love your channel. Your enthusiasm for the music is fun to watch:)
well I hope all the LP’s my lil sister stole from me are bringing her comfort
"Bloody well right" is an other great one by them🙂
Supertramp. One of the finest bands ever. Hide In Your Shell is a particularl favourite of mine but they're catalogue is filled with goodies!
Supertramp - Take the long way home
Next recommended Supertramp song: “Bloody Well Right” (studio/audio version)
The piano intro on that song is so sick that you’ll be replaying it in your head the rest of the day. And the saxophone outro will make you want to replay the song in your headphones again.
yes just the mention of this song & it’s playing in my head and now i’m going to listen to it thanks 🙏
SUPERTRAMP, "GOODBYE STRANGER"... IN MY THOUGHT THIS GROUP WAS THE 70'S BEST KEPT SECRET... MY FAVORITE ALBUM WAS SEVERAL YEARS EARLIER. "CRIME OF THE CENTURY"...
love their music. Dreamer and Crime of the century Brilliant Tracks
The Logical Song will knock your socks off
Its next
Supertramp is my favourite of favourite bands. They have been since the mid-1970s when I became a teenager. Play anything from Crime of the Century (an all-time classic album), Crisis? What Crisis? (so underrated and underplayed), Even In The Quietest Moments (Incredible LP), Breakfast In America (their most commercial and perhaps popular album) or Famous Last Words (a hidden gem). React to more of them Harri and I'll be watching you on a regular basis. Cheers.
Hard not to enjoy any song with whistling in it!
Yes! Had this album and wore it out! The entire Breakfast in America album is great!
This song is a great candidate for a movies closing credits.
Try Rudy and Crime of the Century you will not be disappointed. One of my favourite bands.
Good song from a great album. You might want to check a couple of my favorite Suoertramp tunes such as Give a Little Bit and Even In The Quitest Moments!👍🏻👍🏻☮️🎼🎤🎹
Just stumbled on your channel and a really great reaction/ review. If you have not listing to the album Crime of the Century, that’s a crime in itself. High pitch vocals is sort of Supertramp’s trade mark
Great pick Harri....after you've covered the othe Supertramp recommendations below, try a little Sweet - "Love is Like Oxygen" (long version is a must) ruclips.net/video/CmKXzCLZ6Eo/видео.html , "Little Willy", and "Fox on the Run".
I won’t go into it all, I’m sure others can let you in on the meaning. I’ve always imagined that the “one night stand” was the concert that they played the night before.
If you only do one more from this album, it has to be “Child of Vision”. If you only do one more Supertramp song, it has to be “School” from Crime of the Century. Either one will blow you away.
I like this song because he's honest with who he is ! He doesn't pretend or lie!
Crisis! What Crisis - great album.
Supertramp, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Doobie Brothers Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel (the order is not important to me) I love all.
I really like the way you comment all thé songs you present. You do it with respect and humility. You also help us to put words on our feelings that these songs give to us. Take care.
Roger Hodgson was the main attraction in Supertramp and wrote their biggest hits, but I've always liked thought Rick was very underrated, I really like his voice
Underrated might be an overstatement, but I feel this song doesn't get the respect it deserves.
The chorus is out of this world. Special special tune.
My husband used to play in various bands that toured the area, playing bars and dances, way back when in the 70s and 80s.
He wasnt very handsome or much of a ladies' man , but he never lacked for female companionship. Women threw themselves at the band members all the time. He could get laid anytime he wanted.
This was long before i came along of course. I personally knew quite a few girls who had a hobby of collecting experience with musicians, much along the lines of the movie "the banger sisters" starring Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon.
Please remember that that era was awfully loose morally.
Sex, drugs and rock n roll. It wasnt till the later 80s and the spectre of AIDS that killed all the free love sentiments that was established in the 60s.
I got married early, missed out on a lot of the wildness back then, but lived it vicariously through some girlfriends... mostly...lol.
I feel sorry for those who missed out living the 60s, 70s and 80s. They were interesting decades, not just musically, but socially. So much change, so much enlightenment.
We were lucky.
I spent years enjoying the music of this song, cheerful and upbeat. Quite bouncy in fact. It was a long time before I found out how bouncy it really was.
Such a fun song, but ever since I heard it, when it 1st came out, I wished that amazing guitar solo at the end would have lasted another 30 seconds, or longer; at minimum, 15 or 20 seconds. Supertramp has a number of great songs. You should react to "The Logical Song" next.
Yea..that ending bit should have been another song 😀
Supertramp, You may get used to the “high pitch” and end up loving it!?!?😉Aren’t they brilliant!!! Most songs of this era could be 2 or 3 individual songs! 👌👍✌️😎
Yeah, his comment about the high being the one thing he didn't like . . . It's always been my favorite thing about this song! Oh well, to each his own.
"The Logical Song" next. Don't overanalyze the lyrics to this too much Harri, LOL
True, many people do. I didn't even listen to lyrics before I turned 50 (with just a few exceptions).
What a perfect song.
Roger Hodgson just has a high- pitched voice. I can see how it might come across as too falsetto at times, but I like it. Try 'Even in the Quietest Moments' (and really hear Roger's nice vocals), and 'School'.
Thank you Harri .😀👍❤️✌️🌼
Saw the interview ...it's a good bye groupie song!!
Some still say it wasnt about that..i think it definitely is
After some research I agree to the first comment, think it was José. It's mostly about "Saying Goodbye to Marihuana", " Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane".!?! Two of the bandmembers wrote this song just about this! But, everyone should take out ,what he want's from this GREAT Song
Takes me right back
Yep that's a great solo . Digging Supertramp more than I did back then , thanks Harri . How about some early Elton ?
Great song no doubt!
Great reaction too🇺🇸
have to listen to “Bloody Well Right” now it’s stuck in my head
that high pitch stuff was the best part of the song oh my.
yes I agree “The Ligical Song”,”Bloody Well Roght” ,”Take The Long Way Home” 👍🙏
typing too fast you know what I meant
I love ya Harri!! I partied hard to this song I'm Mary....my BFF is no longer with me..it was Our song. Damn I miss her... and those days!!
School--Logical song and Crime of the century are my favorites..and all from the same album
Yep, song's all about a playa who goes around the world laying pipe left and right. But loves them and leaves em, because he has a rock career to pursue, naturally
😎👍🎶 Great classic 👍✨

HarriBest Music Reaction Hello,
Good by stranger is musically one of my favorite song from them. Oh my gosh! This fucking wa-wa guitar drive me crazy each time I hear it start in the song, I'd want that this solo never stop! :)))
My top 10 of Supertramp: (I precise I'm French so I less take care to lyrics than a native English speaker, even if I always understand the general meaning of a song in English)
01 - Rudy
02 - Goodbye stranger
03 - School
04 - Dreamer
05 - Cannonball
06 - It's raining again
07 - Logical Song
08 - Child of vision
09 - Hide In Your Shell
10 - Fool's Overture
And of course : Breakfast in America and Take a long way home could be in this top 10 in equal part with one or two songs of this list.
- Best live of Supertramp is "Live in Paris" (1979)
That's all for today folks! :))
Some have suggested that because he mentions the names, Mary and Jane, that he was giving up Marijuana and that was his heartbreak.
always loved this one!!
My damn theme song! I never look behind me my troubles will be few!
Hi Harry, most songs from the 60's and 70's could have been two, sometimes 3 different songs.👌👍✌😁
Great song
This song is definitely about One Night Stands, but great song!
Next Up: TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME
Yay! Thank you. I think it's about a traveling musician's multiple one-night stands. So many so fast he can't even remember the girl's name. Mary? Jane? Whatever.
How many others caught on to lyrics goodbye Mary goodbye Jane....come tomorrow feel no pain, hope you find your paradise....to me hopefully overcoming marijuana addiction.
Thanks, Harri - if you like Supertramp, I think you might also like "Squeeze" - one of their best attributes is the balance of instruments and vocals - all super-talented - you may know "Tempted" - but it's far from their best - although they have so many good ones, it's hard to choose - if you have time & inclination, check out: "up the junction" - ruclips.net/video/RQciegmLPAo/видео.html
School is their best song. The LP its from Crime of the Century is a masterpiece
You are so cute Harri !!
Now you've said this about the lyrics I dont know what I think 😂 I thought it was about life while touring, but perhaps that's my innocence 😂 but they always have great music! I always thought Pink Floyd for kids.
Harri, i think it’s about time to point out that you have some pretty cool shirts!
It's a nice Supertramp song, also quite successful, but with Supertramp I feel a bit like with Chicago. The very early albums were the best. Not as smoothly polished and more willing to experiment.
Good guitar at the end as songs uses to have.
Don't sleep on the deluxe version of breakfast in America album with the live versions of "Another Man's Woman" or "Child of Vision" etc..
The production and creative effort they put into this album! Knowing it from the day of release but haven't played it in about twenty or thirty years, I now realize how outstanding this album is. I have been misguided by the titlesong, which I hated and still can't appreciate, it made me put the album away. But the other songs deserve all the attention.
Mary Jane was a reference to weed and its addiction. Saying goodbye to it.
I completely agree with you about the high pitched vocals, they kinda spoil it slightly
I know how ya feel about this one Harri...this is like bein turned loose inside a pastry shop and eatin yer way to heaven...
My guess is that it's a reference to a rock'n'roll star to the inevitable loose girl fans.
Haha, this song brings back so many memories of my childhood. This was a song I loved to hate. LOL I am not trying to cast aspersions on anyone's musical tastes. Obviously, this was a well done record and very good for what it was trying to do. However, it's not my cup of tea. The faux Frankie Vallie voices got on my nerves from the beginning. Definite nostaligia!
A other great Canadian band is Motion Device
Romeo sure, but free mind too. No ass kicking required.
Fans value for money? Ends in adventure and freedom. You didn't get it!
I believe that the lyrics were about a conversation one of the guys had with a "stranger". He went into a bunch of wild stories and that's where the line "the devil is my savior", also comes from.
Just listen to their whole album :Crime of the Century.
I'm hoping Megan the stallion can put out a song of this quality.
You look at this song differently when your wife and mother of your three kids uses this song to justify being unfaithful. Hope her life went well we never saw her again.
hey that’s what you get when you fall for a musician
You are definitely on old sole Harri!!!! You were definitely born in the wrong generation!!!! Just saying. The 70’s and 80’s are you forte for sure!!!! Glad you have found so many of my youth growing up music favorites!!! Go Angus Young!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 So says Austin Tx anyway!!!!! 😎🍸
Hahahaha..thanx
The Beatles love shows maybe he just loves a good song , maybe he should try the Kinks 60s stuff , beautiful fragile gems .
And the late 60s
For something completely different try Hide in Your Shell.
Maybe by ‘Mary-Jane’ he meant marijuana??
This doesn’t sound anything like pop. It’s sounds like some straight up Prog. Were the band have emphasises the vocals. More than on most of the profs sounds that I have ever heard.
Song reminds me sadly of Bill Clinton.
Marijuana the herb was or is known to Mary Jane so ...
Apparently they did say in an interview that its about groupies..Thats what someone said here in the comment section
@@HarriBestReactions It might be
