If people knew how many perks, privileges, and protections corps had there’d be anarchy. Not only are they exempt from paying into SS as a legal entity (but are considered people when it comes to donating) but they get huuuuge tax refunds. Like Walmart gets tens of millions from the US treasury and pay a pittance into it. Same with big banks. The average taxpayer is funding corporate welfare along with warfare.
When I was in college back in the 80’s, we called it wealthfare. (YT autocorrect changed that word to healthfare!! I obviously changed it back to what I meant. LOL) That word applied to policies designed to financially assist wealthy people as well as corporations, basically any policies designed for the benefit of the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. I still think it’s an appropriate word and concept.
In a business class I learned how big oil and alcohol companies spend money on ‘good works’ to off set how we think about them- not because they want to do good
Every successful business does this. From local franchises "donating" or organizing "charity" events to multi billion $ international empires owning charities for tax write offs and PR red herrings. It's all fake.
Absolutely true! I have been painfully aware of this truth all of my adult life. I'm 72 years old now and watch commercials in disgust 🤢. Everything from shaving and spraying your pelvic area to medications showing people partying having a wonderful life while they whisper how many ways it can destroy your life.
Hi! Remember when we were young and some toothpaste company had an ad featuring a woman being sexily squeezed out of a tube of their toothpaste? That’s when it hit me…in today’s parlance: oh, HELL no!
Something I learned recently was how when we as a customer round up our change at checkout or do any of the other in-store donations, the company donates our money in their name and then gets a tax write off.
Yikes! 😱 I never thought about that whenever I’ve done it. Definitely going to stop doing that and donate to companies directly. This definitely needs to be spread around so more people are aware of it.
"The right actions for the wrong reasons _reinforces the wrong reasons."_ This is a foundational moral litmus test that helps me cut through a lot of BS.
I am trying my hardest to not use corporations as much as possible. That includes Goodwill and Salvation Army. I shop at my local thrift stores that will give vouchers to people the people in the community to get food or clothes. If I hsve to use a corporation I check on Goods unite us first.

BK is on the list of companies you can boycott if you don't fancy supporting what's going on in Gaza. It's healthier to make your own burgers anyway, or support a small business.
I can not recommend the “Killing Us Softly” film series by Kilbourne highly enough. I have told so many people it should be absolutely required viewing for everyone and as a matter of survival for young women. It looks like there is a 4th one I need to watch, there were only 3 last I checked!
That book is excellent and there is a video which goes along with it. I taught a Women’s History unit in my HS WH curriculum and used the video and those fancy fashion magazines. I once had a girl tell me, “you have changed my life forever “. It was the most gratifying moment of my teaching career. Anyway. The book is timeless.
Publicly traded corporations number one goal is shareholders. It is never their customers. Their customers are the path to satisfying their shareholders, and nothing else.
Reagan is blame worthy for many things, but the fake corporate social consciousness and brand loyalty inducing marketing propaganda started long before Reagan.
Bravo! The biggest turning point was when the mfg. tags were moved to the outside of our clothing and we became billboards for large corporations. Now retail stores have us check out our own purchases for free and we do it! Like unpaid employees. Whats wrong with us?!
We don't know how to achieve anything without including the marketplace. Without having a product to consume. As if it legitimizes the interaction, or gives our acts a purpose.
Honestly, I didn’t even think that was really burger king. I thought that was just some random person like on Twitter a few yrs ago when “Chick-fil-a” and “Popeye’s” were supposedly beefin’ over chicken sandwiches…
As your video is interrupted by a make-up ad. 🙃 Thank you for the book recommendation! I needed a book to replace The Beauty Myth after I found out Naomi Wolf's information wasn't accurate.
I think the term is ethics versus values. Cuz corporations definitely have values. They're just CORPORATE VALUES and absolutely not human / human rights ones. I remember hearing the old but still true and always will be joke of these are oxymorons: jumbo shrimp, military intelligent, high class call girl, snd business ethics. Howevere i disagree with the call girl thing - thats wrong, sexist, and anti sex worker.
It absolutely was a random meme but I saw multiple people on TIktok GOING TO BURGER KING and making a point of picking it over McD bc of that fake "tweet"...why are we so willing to give our loyalty to BRANDS?
Because Advertising is Propaganda for profit... Surely you know this? The Americana culture is steeped in Consumerism (from cradle to grave)... How else do investors monetize the plebian populace? AND this thing worship has been in American culture for over 100 years... See: wallpaper fad....
There was a court case (can't remember the name) where the judge ruled that advertisers are legally allowed to lie to consumers and it's our job as consumers to determine when we're being lied to. So you have to start from the point of 'all advertisers (and corporations) are lying to me' in dealing with them.
Imho, MSM also, deserves special mention. I know they're only a tool, and actually, corporations themselves. But they are both high-profile, and by their ubiquitous presence in our lives, quite insidious in shaping our perceptions of current events and outcomes.
I believe most companies value only money. We need to support those that do, like Patagonia and smaller companies who put their money where there morals are.
Great video. One point though, Burger King didn't actually post this one, they are snarky and make me laugh and it wouldn't surprise me if they did; but they didn't. Doesn't change the base message here that companies are out for themselves, but thought it should be mentioned.
I just realized we are buying fake hope and dreams, instead of fighting for real hope and dreams, which is much more exhausting and dangerous and we just want to survive and maybe be happy for a minute occasionally? Why must humanity be so self-destructive? 😞 Then we wonder why everyone’s depressed… 😓
One time I was working in the garden with my baby (now 16 yr-old) strapped to my back, and some ladies walked by and one said, "You're always working in the garden. You're the get-'er-done-est mom I know." I don't sleep much, I don't watch TV, I need to be busy. But also, how does ANY mother care for kids, take care of domestic work, and also work from home? I have more free time now than a year and a half ago when I was also the full-time caregiver for my elderly father with dementia.
idk about the kid part, skipped that deliberately. but I've seen people with crazier set ups than this and they spend around 20-30 hours a week in the garden when they have free time and weathers nice,so at worst you're likely to have approximately one days worth of work done in the yard spread throughout an entire week....not real that bad huh? just skip the semen demons and free time is far more available.... yes that's what i call kids.
All facts. Corps. Do not care about you. I've altered my shopping and dumped several subscriptions after finding out how much they fund GOP and Proj2025. Even WHAT I buy at the smaller stores has changed. It's a challenge, but my vote is only ONE, but my dollars are MANY MORE.
Do you have any other recommended readings? I'm new to your channel. If you really want to become cynical of corporate America and just about everything in general, read 'Confessions of an Economic Hitman'. You will never think of America the same again.
I agree with your sentiment, but I suspect that the people saying they were going to eat at Burger King now were lying just as much as BK was. Granted, even just sharing the meme *is* free advertising for them.
Remember the end of the Joker movie after Joaquim Phoenix shot Robert DeNiro? Do you remember how the Joker became a hero to the citizens of Gotham who had been put upon by the wealthy? Yeah.

LIES! Costco is my bestie and I'll die loyal. Unless they start pulling a bunch of shady shit. But that's kinda the point for me- I think that encouraging the good behavior of corporations by patronizing them is one limited way in which we can sway the behaviors of corporations. if they see that inclusivity pays, they do more of it. not saying it's a good solution full stop because you are correct- they care only about the bottom line. but we aren't going to get rid of corporations at this stage, so consciously supporting the ones that take the less wrong path is kinda the best we can do in a way.
The reason people fall for disingenuous advertisements like that is the same reason women fall for disingenuous mens' bs, and end up with a pos. We want people to care SO badly. We're all starving for compassion, empathy, & good will-from people in our life, from our corporations, from our families-it's all the same. We want to believe Burger King is "down" with the collective unrest, isn't like other corporations, and therefore "wouldn't snitch", because we want a corporation-any corporation-to care. I'd argue that the amount it benefits them is an acceptable sacrifice XD
I like listening to your content and have listened for a few years. I have one concern. Your continual derogatory comments about police officers (cops in your words) is perplexing. I understand every occupation has bad apples. Teachers, priests, coaches, elected officials, parents, etc. My daughter is a police officer in Oregon, specifically a community resource officer. She spends her days helping homeless people. Making sure they have water, getting meals, helping them with medical issues and appointments. Reminding them where they can and can’t sleep. Helping them to find clothing when they’re walking the streets naked and intoxicated. Reminding them they can’t poop on the sidewalk or leave their dilapidated motorhome in front of someone’s house. Police officers don’t make the rules, they enforce the rules that the public votes in. Not all police officers are bad. Who are you going to call when someone breaks in your house or vandalizes your car? A social worker?
I would encourage you to dig into the history of policing and the statistics around police violence. Police do not prevent crimes and they actually do a terrible job investigating them. They don't make people safer they protect the wealthy and property. I'm not here for apologies for cops, I'm definitely not going to be OK with trying to equate cops to teachers and coaches. I'm sorry, but police officers are not friends to homeless people. They are the number one greatest risk to someone who is living on the streets.
It's unfortunate but the supreme court basically said cops don't have to enforce the law. Warren v. District of Columbia and DeShaney v Winnebago County Dept of Social Services. No not all police are bad, but SCOTUS determined we can't depend on them for safety. 😢
“Reminding them where they can and can’t sleep [and that] they can’t poop on the sidewalk” is such a funny way to say “enforces anti-homeless laws” and “doing nothing to help people access a bathroom”..
My Dad was a respected LEO and is a good person. He still worked for a very corrupt system and he knew that. He did a lot of good for vulnerable prison inmates while he was employed. His career choice just paid off for him because his retirement and health care is set for the rest of his life. Some people can make that kind of compromise. I tried to do something similar in my career and learned I couldn’t compromise like that.
I do think it's okay to support a company making marketing choices that benefit the masses, but if it's to cover some nefarious business dealings, call the mfers out! 👍🏼👍🏼

Last time I checked bleaching in Asia had nothing to do with looking more white and everything to do with fashion or appearing to not look working class or whatever it was (the implication being that the more tan your skin, the more time you spend working out in the sun).
Kinda reminds one of, "I don't care about you, I just want your vote."
Right??? If Burger King gave af they’d be paying their employees $23/hr
$27.00 hr. just to live in a safe neighborhood.
Given that an Impossible Burger is $11 they certainly should be.

Doesn't burger King have the defense department contract for most military bases?
Publicly traded corporations number one goal is shareholders. It is never their customers. Their customers are the path to satisfying their shareholders, and nothing else.
You can thank Reagan for this. Thanks to his marketing deregulation, we've literally been raised by corporations since birth to behave this way.
Reagan is blame worthy for many things, but the fake corporate social consciousness and brand loyalty inducing marketing propaganda started long before Reagan.
