My fave Whammy-style pedal trick - Setting it to 2 semitones and using it to "bend" my strings, creating a lap/pedal steel kind of sound that's very different sounding compared to an actual string bend.
Detune sounds really good. Better than a typical chorus pedal which can easily rather sickly. The boss harmonist pedal is great too, especially if you use an expression pedal plugged into it. A good alternative is the Boss PS6 Harmonist. You can play scales where the intervals are not completely fixed because you can choose the key with major or minor and the note pairings or trios move distonically. It can whammy if you plug in an expression pedal. You can play the Killer Queen solo with it. Heel down for single notes like normal, and toe down for three notes at once.
I like the idea of having a separate pitch pedal from my modeler since I can drop my guitar’s pitch but still have access to my same patches. If you build it into your patch, that’s a whole lot of new patches even if DSP wasn’t an issue
John Nathan Cordy For real. my next significant gear purchase is gonna be the Drop or EHX pitchfork just so I can play Beat It and Kickstart My Heart without blowing my vocal cords outs
If digitech wasn't just bought and sold a couple times as a "manufacturing drop ship" company to keep selling the current lineup I'd love a Drop V2 that has the up as well as the down tuning capabilities. But alas.
@@kentl7228 Good to hear, I've seen the brand is more active on social media too. I'm not in the pedal market anymore, but it's always good when respected manufacturers make a comeback.

Love that when you plug in the exp it unlocks new functions and bonus points for their how, low can you go/high is the sky, program. It's actually pretty awesome, as I've been asked to do 8 string modern metal sounds but I use a modded Gretsch g2655t guitar (made it like an es339/Ibanez am type) and I'm not going to bother with ext range - the extra strings throw me off with tracking notes. The new virtual jeff pro (digital whammy) could be an option if instead of pedal you want a digital pitch shifter on a whammy bar shape. Is even better option if you have only one guitar with a fixed bridge but i dont think you could make flutter effects with that bar....
Kinda disappointed you didn't go full-on Tom Morello or the Edge in the playing demo Mr. Cordy (joking) Pink Floyd's "Marooned" from the Division Bell is sublime showcase of the Whammy's use for movement instead of an "effect" that people mainly used it for
The simple pitch on the Helix is better sounding than the drop. The latency is slightly worse but there is no change in tone. The poly capo effect L6 spent a year on is awful and the old simple pitch destroys it.
My diamond compressor, wah and whammy 5th gen all are true bypass, what would be the best chain order? Wah-Comp-Whammy or Whammy-Wah-Comp? Thanks in adv.
I’m thinking of checking out the gamechanger audio bigsby because it seems to be able to do a lot of what this one does and it also looks super cool lmao
Yeh - so I think in the big Helix that'd be the best bet right? Maybe even HX effects I could put together a Whammy type preset with a couple of pitch blocks?
I thought the pitch whammy on the Helix sounded too artificial at plus one octave if I remember correctly for Pink Floyd.Marooned and maybe for Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the machine....Marooned sounds more musical than the Helix.....maybe you could compare the sound quality of the two of them.....or give me your thoughts here after comparing....Thx
I've actually found the latency on the real whammy for the pitch up +2 octaves makes it VERY difficult to play fast lines...Not sure why that is happening as the Drop side seems fine and the harmony side?
Very good video!! Just one doubt: In an "extreme" case, with a 6 string guitar if I want to go down to standard A, do you think it would sound better lowering the Drop to 7 semitones (with the guitar previously in standard E) or would it sound more natural/fuller lowering it by itself? 5 semitones with the Drop (in this case with the guitar tuned in standard D)? PS: I also forgot to add what opinion you have about the "Shift Up" option to raise several tones in certain songs (because for example my guitar does not have 24 frets and it is an impediment to play several solos) and if it would be better to use the part of the Whammy or the part of the "Shift Up". And the same in the case of lowering the pitch, I was wondering if the Whammy sounded better or in this case the Drop would sound more appropriate. Thank you so much.
I smile looking at this because some people want the Hendrix sound and his gear was sometimes awful. He had to tolerate a lack of choice and germanium diode fuzzes that were temperamental and varying in tone from one to another. He would have adored modern effects and been as happy as a pig in poo. This pedal is a great example. Let alone the technology we take for granted would have some very interested scientists and engineers...

Exactly, and even on the full Helix you have to sacrifice a bunch of DSP to have a single poly pitch block, let alone 2?

Yes best unboxing knife. Is the film reference Crocodile Dundee?
The first time I heard a Whammy on a record was Pink Floyd's Marooned and it still is the most iconic use of the pedal for me.
