Dennett on form|: Daniel Dennett explains how people address questions to their faith and introduces the term deepities. The full video can be found here • 'The Evolution of Conf...
I recently heard that teenage girls are the most prolific inventors of new words. I hadn't realized until just now that Dennett had snagged "deepity" from one. Just another of the endless deepities of being to ponder.
Just as the sciences can be applied to engineering and linguistics can be used to make languages, theology could be applied to the creation of new religions. Except you're not supposed to admit when you're making up a religion - it is not a discipline that admits any creativity.
I think it's his daughter trying to tell him he is making simple concepts complicated. Interestingly he somewhat missed her point. Making his own definition for her word " deepity".
“If it’s not worth doing, it’s not worth doing well.” How do you know that studying Theology isn’t worth doing? Aren’t you presupposing that God either doesn’t exist or doesn’t care what you think of him? How did you reach this conclusion? Also, to assert that “Theology is just a way to relieve skepticism without raising curiosity” is erroneous. This is a massive category error because Theology isn’t the same as Apologetics (although they are closely related). The role of Theology isn’t to answer objections defensively, it’s to assert truths on the offensive. Apologetics tries to convince while Theology states the truth without regard to any opinions. How’s that for a “deepity”? LOL

I looked up love and it is in the dictionary.
But under the definition was: Love, something you wont find in here.
Mind Santa.
Dennett is a legend. I'm so sick of hearing deepities everywhere.

"Love is just a 4-letter word" is better.

Sure, and saying that cat can haz cheeseburger is not sufficient for cat can hazing a cheeseburger. How does that make what Dan said dishonest?

The mother of all deepities is "consciousness is just an illusion". Oh wow.
Thats just stupid
What are the alternate meanings at play here?

How would you demonstrate that? You have no reason to have confidence in your assertion.

This applies perfectly to grievance studies academics. This is idea laundering.
