My grandmother was Ukrainian. She collected little elephant figurines. However, they had to have the trunks up, as if they were bellowing. These were good luck. Elephants with their trunks down, were bad luck.
She also wouldn't take a pin or needle directly from anyone's hand. You had to put it down, then she'd take it. Good luck, you know.
    RIP Grandma...died in 1995.

I love hearing about old superstitions.. the wallet one reminds me of one from Ireland.. in Ireland you never give a sharp object is a gift you always make them pay even a penny for.. otherwise it might cut your friendship short. 😊

it is i think also a Scottish tradition to leave money in a wallet that is given as a gift, likewise it is not the value of the money that is a gift but considered un lucky to gift an empty wallet.... it is also scottish tradition that the first visitor to your home on new years day should bring a lump of coal as a gift!!!

I simply love your accent. I've heard that Ukrainian is 1 of the 3 most beautiful languages in the world. I know very little Ukrainian but have learned more Russian. Russia was actually Руссия. When it became Россия it went away from the Kiev Рус and those Slavic people to Moscow and Россия. Hopefully Ukrainians can liberate Russia and they can become socialist like Scandinavian countries.
