My grandmother was Ukrainian. She collected little elephant figurines. However, they had to have the trunks up, as if they were bellowing. These were good luck. Elephants with their trunks down, were bad luck. She also wouldn't take a pin or needle directly from anyone's hand. You had to put it down, then she'd take it. Good luck, you know. RIP Grandma...died in 1995.
I love hearing about old superstitions.. the wallet one reminds me of one from Ireland.. in Ireland you never give a sharp object is a gift you always make them pay even a penny for.. otherwise it might cut your friendship short. 😊
Ha ha ha, i thought this was very funny and cool bc as someone who wants to immigrate to Ukraine now i know a few things i wouldn't have known watching other videos.
Funny video, I really liked the way you portrayed Grandma with respect. Awesome! We have the same wallet money thing here in America ....see we are really not that different.
Baba told my dad that evil things would hear the whistles and use the icons as doorways to sneak into our world. Then they would stay in your house! Don’t let them in!
It is an Awesome video, your beautiful character (on both sides) is Brilliant. It even gave me a better look at Ukrainian culture and what I will be in fore :)
it is i think also a Scottish tradition to leave money in a wallet that is given as a gift, likewise it is not the value of the money that is a gift but considered un lucky to gift an empty wallet.... it is also scottish tradition that the first visitor to your home on new years day should bring a lump of coal as a gift!!!
Very funny!!! This reminded me of the superstitions that my Polish Babcia and all of her Babcia friends used to talk about!!! I'd love to see more videos like this!!!
It would be really cool to include Mom and Grandma in some of your videos so they can live on forever on RUclips. That's what I did on my little channel and really glad I did because I lost most of my pics in the California fires. love
What an excellent video. Hi from Australia, Taya. My mother was very superstitious. For example, I remember her being upset if anybody opened an umbrella over his or her head inside the house - extremely bad luck!! May God rest her beautiful soul.
HAHAHAHA. I know several Russians who have the same superstitions. Every time I take them to the airport, we all sit and wait for a minute on the stairs.
What about a bird in the house? I'm of Polish ancestry and my Grandmother would have had a total freak out if she found out there was a bird in her house. I think it meant someone close would die.
Nice video and you try to some diffrent video and one think i like which is waiting to good time for any special work . I think it's only hindustan follow to good time for travel or special work
I simply love your accent. I've heard that Ukrainian is 1 of the 3 most beautiful languages in the world. I know very little Ukrainian but have learned more Russian. Russia was actually Руссия. When it became Россия it went away from the Kiev Рус and those Slavic people to Moscow and Россия. Hopefully Ukrainians can liberate Russia and they can become socialist like Scandinavian countries.

I like the granny kerchief/bandanna thing. What is it called? Like a babooshka but tied differently. I think it looks nice but I'm a bit old fashioned or maybe just old.
@@TayaUkraine Thanks Taya. Asnate Rancane's mother also wore such a head covering whilst performing the folk song "Ne sijalo, ne joralo" I thought it looked very attractive. I didn't know it was a granny thing though.
‘We are waiting for your good luck’
🤣🤣😆😆

Strong family resemblance!
2:06 it should read "spit over one's shoulder" (split means divide!)
or "cracher aus dessus l'epaule"
I like your business side of this channel but your creative side I like more! This was really fun.
We have the same tradition in Ireland with regards to giving the purse or wallet as a present 🎁

Superstition is a universal phenomena of human's insecurity 😅😅🙈
Some of them are so similar to what my mother believes in India
You're an angel,
Taya, Your grandma is beautiful...
I know it for sneeze instead of hiccup XD other ways to stop hiccup other than drinking water is to hold your breath or get someone to scare you
What about a bird in the house? I'm of Polish ancestry and my Grandmother would have had a total freak out if she found out there was a bird in her house. I think it meant someone close would die.

Sorry that should be spelled babushka not babooshka apparently.
It's just a scarf
@@TayaUkraine What is it called in Ukrainian? Bandanas are worn more often by younger people here i think.
Hustka
@@TayaUkraine Thanks Taya. Asnate Rancane's mother also wore such a head covering whilst performing the folk song "Ne sijalo, ne joralo" I thought it looked very attractive. I didn't know it was a granny thing though.
