Part 2: In Kuala Lumpur, You can rent a 1000 sq ft apartment for HK$3000-5000, and there are plenty of international, Chinese and Hong Kong restaurants offering delicious cuisine from various countries. You can also hire Indonesian or Filipino domestic helpers, either as full-time or part-time help. The wages are relatively lower compared to Hong Kong. Jaya Grocer supermarket offers a wide range of international food products. Private healthcare standards are similar to Western standards and comparable to those in Hong Kong, but the costs are only about one-third of what they are in Hong Kong.

I live in scotland, communication is not a big problem for me, what I am hesitating is the weather, the transportation, the bills and the variety of foods, not to mention the accessibility of medical assistance. NHS is a contributory scheme, it is not like it is a total free service (as in HK), i always joke to my HK friends, to be able to see a GP is as hard as to meet the UK royals. and the GP you gonna get, whether it can help you or not, depends very much on your luck. so far my experience has been disappointing. in HK, if you have the means (middle class/average) , you can go private and get the best care within your affordability, at least you got another choice, in UK, utilizing private practice is astronomical that is only reachable for the "rich". The second one is the transportation, it is extremely expensive, with 2 pounds per trip and cap at 5 pounds per day, that is HKD50.00 a day. It is very time consuming to go from one place to another, the bus here which is 7 out of 10 times isnt on time, delayed is a common everyday occurrences, transport time (the bus circle and circling every little alley and street to accommodate passengers), bus here with 40+ stops is normal. A good way to train your patience. :) The electric bill here is simply ridiculously expensive, i dont get why government has to tax people for using basic necessities? as if the bill isnt hefty enough. The weather, in Edinburgh, gloomy days/colder days (no sunshine) are more than sunny days, but that is also expected cause one must have done their homework before coming over right? but still when one actually and physically has to brave the strong wind and rain (it rains a lot here) just to do some grocery shopping is exhausting. and yet again, it leads us back to the electric bill, heater is an extravagant commodities here. be warned. :) Variety of food here is of course no match for HK, even if that is also to be expected, but that doesnt mean one cant "be disappointed". Interesting, ma'am! I'm a Canadian citizen, and I'm now living in UK. For me, I would prefer UK. I myself have an obsession with British Culture. Although salary in UK is likely less than in Canada, the living cost in uk is less than in Canada (excluding London maybe). So in UK, I can get much easy to afford my life than in Canada! At least, I can buy a house by my income in UK. If I'm still staying in Vancouver/Toronto today, I'm afraid that I'd still be unable to buy a house til now even if I'm working 2 full-time jobs at same time! I have no ideas why many young people are still choosing Canada. The living cost there are super high, and finding a good family doctor is super hard! And. I don't choose US also. I can't live in a place with high rate of crime, hot weather, and crazy left cultures/idealogies. You know, there are no utopian cities in the world, and all cities have their pros and cons. Just choose a city that suits you most. If I could go back to the past and choose again, if I can forget all politics, I rather stay in HK, to be honest! Hong Kong is ready beautiful! But right now, it's definitely a hard moment for people who are still choosing to stay in HK. Even you can ignore all politics, but I'm afraid that you can't evade to face the risks on difficult circumstances, such as international sanctions against HK/China or the war on Taiwan Strait. A rumor said that our great emperor Xi is agressively planning to take over Taiwan militarily, and many evidences have proved that he is likely preparaing for it and he would take action in coming years. If he ready sends troops and explodes the war, do you think that Hong Kong would still maintain in peace in the view of geopolitic? If this war doesn't happan eventually, it would be super great! But, if it ready happens, what would you do? I hope you'll evaluate all risks and take a wise decision, otherwise you'll be sorry for it. If you're looking a good place for giving your a good quality of life but you don't like US/UK/Canada/AUS/NZ, I'll suggest you to look at Malaysia! I'm now looking at Malaysia. Culture is closer to HK, foods there is so good, and I found so much funs there! I'm considering to relocate to there for my retirement in the future. I think it may be good place for you because Malaysia schools (international Schools) needs more English teachers like you. Think about it! Thank you!
I take exception to your suggestion that Malaysia is an ideal destination of migration for families with young children. My primary concern lies in how the education system is conducted primarily in regionally-specific language (Malay) as opposed to a more world-applicable lingua-franca (like English). Even if you send your children to an international school conducted primarily in English, if the environment is primarily composed of people whose speech is so heavily accented, children who grow up in such an environment will be stunted for international work.
Part 1: You can consider MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) for relocation to Kuala Lumpur. It's a great place with many international schools and a good environment for raising kids. The tuition fees are only one-third of those in Hong Kong. For example, Sunway International School is highly regarded, offering Canadian curriculum, and secondary school education follows either the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
Though Malaysia is a very good place to live, they hold non-Chinese passports so there is no urgency to leave HK. They will pocket $$$ till there are better opportunities $$$-wise!
When I worked for a major corp. a couple from HK came to visit my company's downtown HQs. They asked me why there were so few people in the street and they were alarmed to see someone has a pistol on his waist. I told them about the danger of walking around in the cities, and the fact that many law abiding citizens carried sidearms for self defense.
My daughter pays $6000US a month for 9 hours daily babysitting in San Francisco. Also from Philippines but knows how to drive the kids to school and is an US Citizen. Its around $3500-4000 monthly in LA for a nanny. If you have young children, babysitting is a big headache in US but other than that, everything is better for myself and my family. I'll choose US for sure but it's really hard to get a green card in US unless your parents claim you or your already have one. Therefore, going to US is not an option unfortunately
Part 3: The only limitation of Malaysia MM2H visa is that you cannot seek employment locally, but you can establish a small business, engage in online businesses or work as an online tutor. The Malaysian government has announced plans to significantly reduce the requirements for applying for MM2H, so it's worth considering. Wait and see what comes out. I am also considering it. !😅
Maggie, US is not the same as before. I live in one of the best neighborhood, gated guarded. Still not safe. Also too much drugs and crimes these days. I am thinking going back to Hong Kong. Like you, I don't think I can adopt HK anymore. My brother has moved to Mainland. He prefers Mainland than Hong Kong. Another thing, when you have kids, prepare for them losing their Asian heritage and values.
I think HK to stay is better for those with no special skill and passively income like rent. You can admit to a hospital anytime with hkid. Low rate... U can buy drinks and cigarettes anytime downstairs. The weather concerns, with aircon on is no issues, power bill is cheaper as the house is small.
I live in North East of United State. The winter is too cold and too long. I am a retiree. I stay at home everyday and can't go to anywhere during the winter. I really want to go back to Hong Kong to spend my retirement. Unfortunately Hong Kong real estate is too expensive. I have no choice to remain in United State.
Two of my brothers live in Chicago, which has very cold winter and they wanted to retire in HK too but housing too high in HK, so they are stuck in Chicago. I live in California, I love the weather and would not move anywhere.
I know it's extremely difficult to immigrate to US but if you can, you should seriously consider. The salary in US is quite high and the work pressure is a lot less compared to HK. I am sorry to mention but I noticed US people are not very hard working, so the chance of promotions for hard working Chinese are very fast and at least in my case when I worked as a certified public accountant. The competition is a lot less due to lots of opportunities everywhere. The best of all is the future of your kids. If they are smart enough, they can go to any college and their future are a lot brighter. With low income families, the government basically paid for most of their college tuition with grants, work studies and subsidies. High level software engineers in CA make $300K+ a year as starting pay right out of college in US but it's not that common in other countries and both my kid and my niece belong to that category. Even accounting degree from UCLA makes $100K+. It's just wonderful.
It’s common among Hongkongers😂, live with it, however on the flip side, it also means we always strive for excellence and improvements, which is something the British really need.
English is only a tools for communication but it is not a key issue to succeed. Many HK people still think they will take some advantages if they know English for immigration. Unfortunately, they didn't know the professionalism is the most important issue when you earned living and stayed at foreign countries.
Of course, liberty is priceless, but living in the UK is not for everyone. You need English proficiency, understanding and acceptance of the British culture. Usually, that applies to the few Anglophiles who went to school and worked in the UK. The US is a much more open society, and is big enough to have many micro-communities for almost every culture. It is much easier for a foreigner to acclimate.
Come to Melbourne, should be perfect for you and your family! A well mixed of US/UK and HK 😄- Asian parents are willing to pay to get great tuition teachers for their kids. AUD80-100/hr is quite a common rate.
Hi, Maggie, Hong Kong still is my first choice. Even I've visited US (New York, Chicago) and UK (London) before, it's good for tourism but not good for living. Just like you said, the tax and career are the big concern. thanks and hope you've a nice day. ^_^
Sometimes when people don't want to talk to you they just speak "Fucglish." I don't think language is a big problem once you get past a certain proficiency... and then it's the content, and the willingness to communicate, that matters.
I've lived in Seattle for 7 years, went back in HK for 10 years, and now living in the UK since 2020. However, HK is not safe to live now, both US and UK have their pros and cons. Probably I'd say Canada is best for both world where you can get universal health care like in the UK, but much quieter and less hectic, and closer to the US. US/UK ties in second place. Australia/NZ are not for me though.
If i were u i would wait few more yrs until your son gets older. Being so young its not going to fly. U be a stay home mom or dad. Single income be very stressful to all three. Better work few more yrs in hk save more mulla and let son be more older then move. Cheers.
15%tip is quite a lot 18% 20%is too much 25% is ridiculous. Don’t forget the cost of food at restaurants has been hiking a lot, that means more tips/income for the waiters/waitresses. 15% is very reasonable for excellent service.

For example, Sunway International School is highly regarded, offering Canadian curriculum, and secondary school education follows either the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.

Use "the UK" when "UK" is a noun: "I visited the UK."
Use "UK" when it functions as an adjective or is part of a name/title: "UK laws are strict."

They asked me why there were so few people in the street and they were alarmed to see someone has a pistol on his waist.

I have seen many recently landed Hongkongers or landed immigrants for several years, they have a common issue. They loves to complaint and picky af.
It’s common among Hongkongers😂, live with it, however on the flip side, it also means we always strive for excellence and improvements, which is something the British really need.

English is only a tools for communication but it is not a key issue to succeed. Many HK people still think they will take some advantages if they know English for immigration. Unfortunately, they didn't know the professionalism is the most important issue
when you earned living and stayed at foreign countries.

Sometimes when people don't want to talk to you they just speak "Fucglish." I don't think language is a big problem once you get past a certain proficiency... and then it's the content, and the willingness to communicate, that matters.
