#BMan - I hear that loud and clear and couldn't agree with you more!! I was 16 yrs old when this song came out...needless to say, I went out and bought the cassette tape the same day and wore that thing out playing this song over and over again. I say this humility but I am glad that I went through the 80s... Monday, February 14, 2022. USA.

My dad told me that the first time this song came on the radio, he was around 10 years old I think and the DJ came on after the song and said "I'm playing that again! its just so good!" and after the song finished again, a guy came on the phone and got SO mad for some reason at the DJ because he didn't like the song. and he put it on the radio station so people could hear. and the DJ laughed and played it AGAIN just because of that and the guy called again and got so so angry and my dad says he just remembers laughing so hard.

"If I should find a helping hand" = he's masturbating, "I sold the Remoir and the TV set" = he's addicted to drugs, and "Finding treasure in the dark"; = he's paying for prostitutes. I was in fourth grade when this song was being played regularly on the radio. But I never could understand what the hay the lyrics were saying until I watched it just now with the lyrics.
What a well made rhythmic pop/funk smash! the song is about sex folks - "why don't you use it, try not to bruise it, finding treasure in the dark" - the video shows a guy and girl in the shadows with light bondage. Wasn't that clear to you??
High time is no time for deciding if I should find a helping hand, I don't wanna be around when this gets out. The lonely only child sitting in the park in charge of finding treasure in the dark. I'm on a ride and I wanna get off try not to bruise it buy time dont lose it. Isn't that bizarre? It's about trafficked kids and the industry habit of getting 'dirt' on their artists after getting them high. That's why none of the band will tell you what it's about. Or, i mean sure, it's just a lighthearted song about nothing.... as they tell it.
It always plays in my car and I didn't know what song it was so I tried to find out, I searched "I got you by my side" I thought that was the lyrics😂. But thankfully I found it.
I love this song, but when you sit and read the lyrics it makes zero sense. Really its like the way family guy strings together nonsense. Still love it tho
I came here because I never understood what they were saying in this song except for "the reflex". I still do not know what they were meaning to say. I think they just threw a bunch of words on the wall and made a song out of it.
The reflex is a shorten term for the use of reflexive pronouns. It is used in a positive way, but the author to the lyrics leaves you the option to deciding what that reflexive pronoun is; is it myself, himself, herself, yourself, or themselves. Just substitute the word reflex with any of those reflexive pronouns, and you solved the mystery. Is it about self enjoyment? Or, is it someone else giving that individual a sense of self enjoyment? That is truly the underlying question and one that is left to the interpreter/listener. Here’s an example, I’ll use the last sentence in the chorus of ‘every little thing the reflex does….’ could be rewritten that as you observe ‘every little thing that she does to herself leaves you answered with a question mark.’ That’s what the reflex is… what a game, a self-interpretive use of a reflexive pronoun to your liking.
