i think one year is fair because it look like he had anger issues. edit: people are commenting on only this reply without looking at my other replies. 1 year is a pretty long suspension if you think about it. this kid is also in middle school and this is his first offense probably so they wanted to be nice and give him a second chance. the punch didn’t do any serious damage luckily so he shouldn’t be banned permanently.

That’s usually how it works. When my dad played rugby in college, one of the opposing players at a game punched the referee after they lost. That dude got a one year suspension.

I don't think he could even grasp the severity of injury he could have caused had he hit him in the throat or temple but 1 year is extremely light considering the disgusting sportsmanship involved. It reminded me of an interview on LAD TV or somewhere that I listened to of some younger guy punching another guy over a nightclub fight or something trivial and the kid hit his head off the ground and died. The guy had to serve like 5 to 10 years just for one punch and hearing the kid that passed aways family mourning him was awful and it messed the guy up listening to them in court. What made it so scary was just like this instance, it was a sucker punch so they were relaxed and not ready for it.
Don't worry, there's bound to be civil litigation following behind. As anyone knows, civil litigation for assaults, even minor assaults resulting in minor injuries, will often lead to 5 figure, sometimes even 6 figure, judgements and legal fees. Somehow I doubt the family of the high school kid is loaded and perhaps the gravity of the situation might set in as his entire family are financially destroyed for years, perhaps decades.

They must have chosen not to file charges. I think that the victim has to press charges for this type of crime. In some states, I know that police can press charges without victim's consent for certain crimes. That must not be the case here.

My parents disciplined me and the other kids parents just talked to me for a bit about why and we all moved on. Hell, I was even friends with him in the later years of HS. I was a pretty bad wrestler in high school and lost just about every match but never would I consider punching my opponent. Sportsmanship is very important to learn at a young age as well as mastering your emotions

Seconded. I was 'the worlds most okayest wrestler' in high school. To be honest, it was just a way to stay in shape for football. Still, no part of me ever considered doing something like this. It's not even like things got heated on the mat and the parties escalated beyond the rules. If you sucker punch someone after the match (particularly after you've lost the match) you end up looking weaker - not stronger. You end up looking like a petulant child.
Thank you for filing a report. Too often victims of violent crime are talked into just letting it go. That allows the perpetrator to believe they can get away with the behavior and victimize others. This person needs to be held accountable.

I got sucker punched like that in middle school. because we were doing wrestling, something the scrawny kid I was never wanted to do, at some point while grappling I bumped him in the chin with my elbow. Not even enough to leave a bruise. After class kid walks up to me and punches me in the face. I tell the coach and we get the same punishment. Makes me wish I punched him back. This was back in 1977. I did my time scraping gum with the delinquent who punched me.

I was a wrestler in HS and this kind of behavior is shameful. I'm surprised he didn't get a lifetime ban. I've never seen a sucker punch like that after or during a match, but Cooper's mom should be very proud, she raised a very respectful and mature young man.

Its 100% critical to the sport of wrestling because there are many, many times when it is very easy to break that trust if you want a win. And sometimes breaking that trust can hurt people real bad if you want. This is a fundamental thing you learn when you wrestle. When you break that trust you will never wrestle again. Believe me. This kid, to say the other kid should not be banned, is huge. I would never, ever wrestle a kid that did this.

As a Senior in HS, I got punched less than 10 seconds into my first match of the season, at a Christmas Tournment. The dude was much bigger than me, and as soon as we started he plowed straight into me and we went out of bounds... next thing you know, he's throwing a haymaker at me - I had pretty good reflexes and quickness back then, and I managed to turn my head and take it on the headgear... it sounded like a grenade going off... I was just shocked... entire gym stopped at stared and before I could even say out loud, "Did that dude just freaking deck me??!" and take a step towards him, my coaches were on me in an instant, "DONT DO IT!!!" and the ref immediately manhandled the guy and threw him out. Later I heard they had to call the cops, he was tearing up a locker room. Some people have issues lol.

It is quite scary how many people think a punch is almost harmless or sometimes even worse. I saw an interview with a convicted murderer who was suprised that hitting a man with a baseball bat in the head killed him. Lack of education and ignorance is sometimes the scariest thing in this world. This kids coach has a new lesson to teach, if not his parents should teach it.

Cooper, the manner in which you speak about what happens suggests you're not only a fine wrestler, but a fine leader. Your parents raised you well. I wrestled growing up in central PA, and can assure you that's not going to happen again. It's was bizarre to see the punch, and I'm so glad he did no damage, as it was a serious, unexpected, dirty, sucker punch. Best to you, your family, your team and your community.

I could only imagine how I would feel if this were my son not doing anything wrong, just trying to shake the hand of his opponent and then BAM.. he gets punched in the face because the other kid can’t take a loss. Society hasn't seen the last of that criminal. I work with kids like this and anyone who's willing to assault someone under those circumstances has a serious problem with emotional regulation and may end up in prison if he doesn't accept some counseling.

Good Point - To add he's in middle school how about his parents that are responsible for him. Why to parents get a free pass and we focus on children.
This is not just poor sportsmanship from a minor. This is a young man that needs help to learn how to control his anger and disappointment when things don't go his way. Hopefully the family of the boy that got punched will take this to court. A judge needs to require at least 1 year of mandatory therapy for this young man before his life goes down the drain. It reminded me of an interview on LAD TV or somewhere that I listened to of some younger guy punching another guy over a nightclub fight or something trivial and the kid hit his head off the ground and died. The guy had to serve like 5 to 10 years just for one punch and hearing the kid that passed aways family mourning him was awful and it messed the guy up listening to them in court. What made it so scary was just like this instance, it was a sucker punch so they were relaxed and not ready for it.

Don't worry, there's bound to be civil litigation following behind. As anyone knows, civil litigation for assaults, even minor assaults resulting in minor injuries, will often lead to 5 figure, sometimes even 6 figure, judgements and legal fees. Somehow I doubt the family of the high school kid is loaded and perhaps the gravity of the situation might set in as his entire family are financially destroyed for years, perhaps decades.

I was a pretty bad wrestler in high school and lost just about every match but never would I consider punching my opponent. Sportsmanship is very important to learn at a young age as well as mastering your emotions

I went 3-32 my Freshmen year. Totally worth it though, wrestling was one of the highlights of my highschool years.
Seconded. I was 'the worlds most okayest wrestler' in high school. To be honest, it was just a way to stay in shape for football. Still, no part of me ever considered doing something like this. It's not even like things got heated on the mat and the parties escalated beyond the rules. If you sucker punch someone after the match (particularly after you've lost the match) you end up looking weaker - not stronger. You end up looking like a petulant child.
Thank you for filing a report. Too often victims of violent crime are talked into just letting it go. That allows the perpetrator to believe they can get away with the behavior and victimize others. This person needs to be held accountable.
The problem is that prosecutors are not prosecuting enough. They make plea deals and let these criminals off without much punishment

I was a wrestler in HS and this kind of behavior is shameful. I'm surprised he didn't get a lifetime ban. I've never seen a sucker punch like that after or during a match, but Cooper's mom should be very proud, she raised a very respectful and mature young man.

Its 100% critical to the sport of wrestling because there are many, many times when it is very easy to break that trust if you want a win. And sometimes breaking that trust can hurt people real bad if you want. This is a fundamental thing you learn when you wrestle. When you break that trust you will never wrestle again. Believe me. This kid, to say the other kid should not be banned, is huge. I would never, ever wrestle a kid that did this.

As a Senior in HS, I got punched less than 10 seconds into my first match of the season, at a Christmas Tournment. The dude was much bigger than me, and as soon as we started he plowed straight into me and we went out of bounds... next thing you know, he's throwing a haymaker at me - I had pretty good reflexes and quickness back then, and I managed to turn my head and take it on the headgear... it sounded like a grenade going off... I was just shocked... entire gym stopped at stared and before I could even say out loud, "Did that dude just freaking deck me??!" and take a step towards him, my coaches were on me in an instant, "DONT DO IT!!!" and the ref immediately manhandled the guy and threw him out. Later I heard they had to call the cops, he was tearing up a locker room. Some people have issues lol.

Society hasn't seen the last of that criminal. I work with kids like this and anyone who's willing to assault someone under those circumstances has a serious problem with emotional regulation and may end up in prison if he doesn't accept some counseling.

I think the kid just wanted to retain some dignity from that situation when he got laid flat by that sucker punch..it was a hell of a punch. Why? His parents didn't do anything. They pressed charges and if that's all they want to do then that's okay. The kid will pay the consequences for what he did. No reason to try and punish his whole family for something he did. Parents can only guide a child so much.
