  • I made a review here • Ikea Rodulf standing d...
As mentioned in the video - I'm very happy with the desk overall, but don't like the top. Too easy to scratch and it's not solid enough for me.

I got an Ikea Rodulf and am getting a custom table top as Ikea table top is not available in my country. I was thinking to go for 122 x 60 or 122 x 70 cm. I really don't need the 140 x 80 as my monitor and laptop span 100cm and I get enough distance between eyes and screen with 70 cm depth. However even at the lowest position the table top is 10cm above my ideal height for ergonomic considerations for my arm. I was thinking to get a pull out slider tray of 25 cm for keyboard at a depth of 10 cm below the table. I was also thinking to put a 30cm deep drawer towards the front for neatly putting my laptop back in.
To get this space below the table the long section that runs in the middle with the controller is a bottleneck. I was wondering if i could put the top with a ratio of 1/3 : 2/3 instead of fixing it right in centre. The monitor and laptop typically are the heaviest at 8-10 kg and the other side just has a keyboard. From the load bearing perspective I think this arrangement should be better than the default one because the heavier side with monitor exerts more force on the stand if its farther away from the central support.
    What do you think?

To be honest, I'm planning to do exacly the same thing when I replace the top next year (move legs towards the back of the desk). I think that it should be fine as each side can lift 80kg (so 160kg both). Only thing that you may have to consider is that when you lean on the desk while standing it may loose its center of weight, but legs seems to be long enough for it to be stable. I was thinking about that and in case I have any issues with stability when moving top to the front, I was planning drill new holes in legs and move them off center. That may put more strain on the motors but I think that it's powerful enough so it can only cause a bit more wear on the mechanism (because it's not balanced anymore).
Keep in mind that adding more weight by attaching the slider tray could put it even more off balance, but your monitor and laptop on the back edge could act as counterweight.
If you want to go full on physics, you can try something like lever formula (distance from center, force etc) 😉 www.engineeringtoolbox.com/levers-d_1304.html

@@pandaengineering I worked out another idea which would simplify things and keep it balanced. I'll cut out keyboard sized tray towards the front (like a depression in the center of table) and lower it. That would give me required height for keyboard without the overhang of the slider being pulled out. I might still keep it a slider to pull out few inches if required. I can then keep the main table top in center.
I think that Rodulf will have center of mass towards the back as the monitor is towards the outer edge. The one which i shared in above link seems to have better stability. However with the drawer and the extra planks to support the keyboard tray it would improve the center of mass and not make it worse.
I will share a pic when done.

Ikea doesn't really make any compatible stuff, but it's best to check with them. I woudn't recommend getting any top from Ikea as they're empty inside and it will be hard to attach it using a different holes.

Thanks for sharing this video. I was about to buy this table but when you brought up the monitor clamp issue I had to think it over again.

I have a sturdy table top that's the same size as this desk. Do you think if I stack it on the top that comes with it I'd be able to use the clamp dual monitor stand without worrying about bending? MIne is arriving tomorrow and I'm preparing because my setup relies a bit on those dual monitors

I would recommend using your own top *instead* rather that with. The Ikea's top feel a bit flimsy when you properly clamp it down, so I'm not sure if it won't make a hole in the bottom part over time. There are some serious forces on edges of the clamps with a big monitor 😁

@@pandaengineering I see… I’ll try to figure out the drilling points on my old top to match the new body. Also I’ll drill the cable holes! I’ll try to post pics here as soon as they’re done. thanks for the answer! very informative video, I hope you’re channel gets waaaaay more subscribers.

Thank you ☺️ that's only my suggestion about the top, see for yourself if that will work for you. I woudn't be surprised that Ikea made the top from different materials depending on where they sell it 😁 If I remember correctly mine came from factory in Lithuania and it was ~13% cheaper than the listing price in the UK or Western Europe. Years ago Nokia also had several factories for same phone models for different markets, but those that were not made in Finland (and were a little cheaper) had worse built quality, so there's a chance that Ikea does the same thing.

The standard Rodulf tabletop size is 140cm x 80cm, but I only have 100cm space. I wonder if I can modify the Rodulf underframe to use it with Linnmon tabletop (100cm x 60cm)? Your video shows that each of the two side bars are joined by two shorter bars. Is it possible to use only one on each side? Or is it possible to drill holes on the side bars to alternate the lengths of them? Thanks!

    • @pandaengineering
      @pandaengineering  2 года назад +1

I think you can drill it just fine, but the tricky part will be the notch I'm showing at about 1:47 it locks the two side bars and you would have to either bend it (it's quite thick) or saw it off.
Please also check if Linnmon table top isn't "Ikea grade" cardboard inside 😉 otherwise it would not be possible to properly mount it. From my expirience most Ikea table tops are only full on the edges and empty in the middle.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I think Linnmon is no exception an ordinary IKEA budget tabletop. I will give it a try if I can find another suitable tabletop.

I'm actually interested in the same thing as you are, 140cm is too much for my space.
I'd like to use a 110cm board instead and I'm looking if there is a way to mod the frame on my own.

Yeah. If you can then wall mount the monitor. Cable management is a bit more of a pain but it is a good alternative
