Sacred Bonds, Shared Vision: Tribes in Philippines Reforest Their Home with Unique Methods

Bukidnon, Philippines, is the “Food Basket of Mindanao” as it is the leading producer and supplier of fresh fruits and vegetables in the region. Despite that, it is also an area that has lost more than 60 per cent of its primary forests due to illegal logging and fires.
In an effort to reforest these areas, local environmentalist John Perrine started the non-profit organisation Hineleban Foundation. A sacred collaboration was formed between the region’s native tribes and the foundation with a purpose in mind - to bring Philippine’s forests back. By working together, a promise was formed. They vowed to respect the land and its people, while focusing on efforts to forest the region. Till today, more than 3 million trees have been planted.
