  • This video depicts a 3-day, 53-mile hike across Kodiak Island from the village of Old Harbor to the village of Larsen Bay. The route followed the river draining into Barling Bay to its headwaters, then I climbed over the spine of Kodiak to the river draining into the head of Uyak Bay, and then I used the mountains on the western edge of Uyak Bay to traverse to the end point in Larsen Bay. I saw relatively few bears as they were mostly down along the creeks feeding on salmon and I stayed high whenever possible, but the deer and goats were represented in abundance. The only downside of this trip was the atrocious brush conditions I encountered after a mild winter and early spring.

These videos are awesome. I grew up partly in Kodiak and Old Harbor and always wondered about some of these routes.

Good job completing that trip. I'm familiar with many spots in your video and it never dawned on me to think anyone would hike it. I see you frequently followed bear trails. Did you ever spend hours going down a trail only to find you can't continue from here and had to turn back to find a way around (like if it lead you to a cliff)? Nicely edited as well. Well done!

Thanks. I talked to Harry Dodge before the trip to ask him about any major game trails in Uyak, and he basically said there weren’t any. I didn’t believe him at first, but he was right. Yow, that was a brush thrash. Getting into the alpine from Barling Bay and then the 2 big climbs in Uyak were pretty awful. But I never got stuck or cliffed out. I planned the route carefully. Cheers.

Loved the video! A Great Book to Read is Monarch Of Deadman Bay, written by Roger A Caras, who wrote many other great books.

Bears? Not really. Kodiak bears in the backcountry are pretty wary of humans. I try not to camp near villages or areas with a lot of human traffic where bears might be habituated. In all the trips I have done I have never felt the need for an electric fence. If you keep a clean camp and take the normal precautions, Kodiak is a pretty safe place to experience Alaskan wilderness as far as wildlife is concerned.
