  • Hi Guys!!!
This video introduces the process of designing traditional Japanese design with 10,000 tiny pieces of wood .
Kumiko is a delicate and sophisticated technique of assembling wooden pieces without the use of nails. The technique was developed in Japan in the Asuka Era (600-700 AD), and has since been refined and passed down through generations of craftsmen who are passionate about the tradition of Kumiko.
    ▶Craftsman Profile
    Takahiro Tanaka / Tatematsu
In 1982, he became the second generation of Edo Kumiko craftsmen at Tatematsu, a company established in Tokyo by his father, a master craftsman. He is a qualified first-class architect and used to work for an urban planning consultant company. He is now applying his knowledge as an architect to the development of new, unprecedented products.
    ▶Craftsman Passion
"I really enjoy thinking and create something that combines tradition and practicality"
While my work does not allow even a 0.1mm error to make perfect crafting, I always think the ideas need to have flexibility. It is definitely true that I need to produce within the rules, but I also want to create a series of products that answer the needs of today with free thinking.
    ▶Achievement
Received the Skill Prize at the Edogawa Ward Traditional Craft Exhibition
Winner of the Board of Education Award at the Edogawa Ward Traditional Crafts Exhibition
Received the Board of Education Award at the Edogawa Ward Traditional Craft Exhibition
He has received many other awards for their work.
Please enjoy watching the Japanese craftsmanship!!!!

I have a soft spot for those who do woodworking. My late fiancé who passed several years ago did woodworking as a hobby. Shelves, shadow boxes, tall tiered shelves that you can put knick knacks on, fish clocks, we made a couple swan planters and our bed he never got to finish. I used to help. I sanded by hand and helped stain. I still have all his sand paper and all of his work. When he would select his wood he said it talked to him. I guess that meant by the look and feel.

I've seen western reproductions of this style but never a master craftsman, and the work is absolutely beautiful.
You can really tell that this skill was developed over a lifetime, something no reproduction will ever achieve in my opinion.

Huh.I was always under the impression that the true beauty of Kumiko is the fact that the single parts are not glued together but only held together by pressure and tension. Was i misinformed there or is that a different woodworking-technique alltogether ?
