- The Pirate Queen is a musical written by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil. John Dempsey is the co-lyricist. The Pirate Queen marks the first time Boublil and Schönberg have created a musical with American collaborators. It is based on the life and adventures of the 16th century Irish chieftain and pirate Gráinne O'Malley, who was one of the last Irish clan leaders to resist the English conquest of Gaelic Ireland. After a Chicago production, the musical ran on Broadway from March to June 2007. The cast featured Stephanie J. Block as Grace O'Malley, Hadley Fraser as Tiernan and Linda Balgord, who was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I. The show received harsh appraisals from the critics and had weak sales.
Filmed on March 24, 2007 at The Hilton Theatre in New York, New York
Cast:
Stephanie J. Block, Hadley Fraser, Jeff McCarthy, Linda Balgord, William Youmans, Marcus Chait.
Notes:
During Act One the filmer had to shot around a head. So, it is a little jumpy at times. Some minor spotlight washout on wide shots but not that bad. Act Two is a much better capture. No head in the way and lots of close-ups. The whole video has great sound.
THIS SHOW DESERVED BETTERRRRRRR.
I don't understand why this show didn't make it big. It is EASILY as good as well-known, worldwide favorites like Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera. It's fierce, it's fun, it's hella emotional, and it's cast PERFECTLY. The talent in this musical is astounding! Stephanie J. Block is phenomenal, Hadley Fraser continues to give me ear-gasms, and I don't know the name of the actress playing Queen Elizabeth, but DAMN THOSE PIPES!!! Just... everything about it is flawless! Then why is it not more prominent in theatres across the globe??? I will never understand. Thank you for sharing this copy, so that we are not entirely deprived of its glory.
Agreed! I think perhaps musicals need a chance to be popular outside Broadway.
I saw this on Broadway. I loved it but recalled thinking it might be too "niche". I overheard another patron complaining there was "too much Irish dancing". I really wanted to turn to her and ask what she expected from a show about an Irish woman coproduced by Riverdance.
I still deeply love this show but I think the Celtic style didn't have a wide enough appeal.
Linda Balgord was the Queen. Super nice person. Funny.
I saw it in Broadway and I like it so much. I have the CD but sadly, nowadays cars don’t come with CD player; and it is not available in Spotify.
I agree. This is such amazing music. Hits in the soul. And this cast!!!
I wish there were more of Hadley's theatre work out there, i very much enjoyed his performance in this. The actors, the music the voices the dancers are all so entertaining, not always possible to see theatre shows live. May i say Thank You to OmyigodYouGuys12 for sharing this to new fans in 2019 x
Good job! I know show bootlegs get a bad rap, but feel they are a good thing .... preserving a production, performances, book and score. Without you we'd have lost TPQ ... all that work for nothing. I'm glad you captured it. Thanks.
I agree it's a good thing, especially when some musicals are just never played ever again.
If it wasnt for these videos i would never of fallen in love with certain shows
Stephanie J Block is incredible!
Maybe one of the greatest father-daughter relationships in musical history
I’m so disappointed that this musical never got the credit it deserves. I’m in tears every time I watch it. The absolute artistry and pure talent that oozes from this production is overwhelming.
This musical has my whole heart. Wicked and Come From Away we’re my favourites for years until I discovered this. I’m a huge theatre nerd and have seen, well, pretty much every musical there is, but I could honestly listen to this whole score 100 times daily. I’m English and so have a good understanding of it, I’ve been all over Ireland and even done the Granuaile trail! I’ve read all of the books, she is fascinating.
When I listened to the soundtrack I didn’t anticipate Woman being so early on... it feels like such an 11 clock number
Woman was added for this performance. It replaced Because I Am A Wife which came after the kick in the balls on their anniversary. I wish both were in it. They put Woman in so we could get a feel for who Grace is, strong and in love. But you can find the other song on SJB’s album. It’s really good of course. It was also tweaked as The Woman That I Am in Chicago. (I am not obsessed…)
Saw this in Chicago - Stephanie & Hadley were wasted :( Love to see a major rewrite and try again
I don’t know if I’m more jealous of Hadley or Stephanie....
bisexuals' problems
I'm not even bi, and I agree with this 😍
Absolutely stunned by the nautical set design and the grand, exciting ensemble vocals.
This play is beautiful and deverses more popular.
Oh to be stabbed by Stephanie J Block and punched in the face by Hadley Fraser
The pipes on Queen Elizabeth are unbelievable
I love the crazy xylophone cabaret instrumentation in the feast scene
I will never understand why this show is not one of the most beloved of all time. It's so incredible and stunning.
Because the critics in New York hated it and, for whatever reason, the critics in New York can still make or break a play.
The "Here on This Night" duet is a masterful harmonic piece.
Thank you. I wish I had seen the show while in Chicago previews, but I did not. The show was not reviewed until the end of the preview process, but I believe the word of mouth generated by those who saw "The Pirate Queen" including social media did not help.
I DISMISS YOU 1:18:24
I'm obsessed with this song. A strong woman yes!
My favorite was "Has it been three years, I CAN STILL WALK OUT!"
I was adopted as a child. Just found out today, through my biological father I'm related to her. Wow, I'm honored. Now I want to know everything about her.
OMG I wish that I had your luck to be related to her because she was strong with a sword as well as a pen. There was a minor documentary series called “warrior women” and they had an episode dedicated to her
I have been told that Grace was a distant relative of mine too :-D
All I have is an attitude toward the Empire from being a blood relative of this amazing woman!
We need many more like her today, as outside control is not contested anymore.
Peace starts with everybody staying home, and living within their means.
Just discovered this musical and before I actually figured out who wrote the music and lyrics, I did think some melodies are so similar to Miss Saigon and Les Mis. Well, not surprised when I found out who wrote it, and that the musical was a flop 😢 Hadley and Stephanie were AH-MAZING in this though! 😍😍😍
I know I am rather late in discovering this. came here for the 2 leading roles. Impressed and puzzled why it had such a short Broadway run. great score, great singing!
Thank you for this as many wont have the chance to still enjoy musicals in this pandemic
Watching on St Patrick's Day and saw orig production in NYC Raido City and love this musical.. it never received the acclaim it should have in my opinion.
I've loved the soundtrack for years, have been searching for a bootleg without success, and was literally on my way to Twitter to ask cast members if they at least had recordings of the cut songs when I found this. Thank. You.
Thank god for this video. I’m playing grace at a community theater production of pirate queen and this is the only source we have to listen to the show.
I feel like I've literally waited 15 years for this (because I have). Thank you.
I think with some revisions this could actually be a great story to adapt into a film. Its great to have a story with a female lead and complex villain. I'm an English woman with Irish ancestry so the stort is very compelling
Why isn’t the cast album on spotifyyyyyyy!!!!😭😭😭😭😭
Thanks so much for posting this. I wanted so much to have seen this -- but when it opened in 2007, I had just been diagnosed with Stage 4 multiple myeloma; and I was fighting for my life then. Better late than never!!
Omg FINALLY a full version!
This musical also deserves a movie
I could see it being an animated movie, perhaps from the studio that made the Irish Folklore Trilogy
This is really good and it deverses more popular and praise.
this is officially the best video on this platform. never in my life had I thought I'd enjoy a shaky2+ hour 2008 handheld camera video this much.
My wife is a reenactor who does a Grace O'Malley rendition. She's read everything she can find about her and she knows all about the history and the story of this amazing lady. In NYC we went to the Library's film archives and saw a video on the making of the musical. Thanks for allowing her to finally see this show! (No thanks to the person with big hair seated in front of you). She was disappointed with the amount of artistic license in the production which doesn't match any of the actual history as she knows it. We also saw a much smaller show along the same lines in Westport, Ireland which also used a lot of artistic license and disappointed her similarly.
This is THE BEST quality of this show I've ever seen and you're my hero for uploading it
I wish that I got to see it when it was on broadway
This is my favorite musical, and having the ability to actually see it like this was incredible. Thank you so much for posting this!!
I love this show.. It is so well done. The music is fantastic. The cast is marvelous.. and so much of the actual legend is built into the show. Congratulations to everyone involved with it. I think it is wonderful! I am so appreciative of what you have achieved. I
It was a great show. The music is really good. Some songs deserve to be included in Broadway albums compilations. And visually (costumes, lighting / projection design, and scenery design) was beautiful.
I wish that I saw this when it was out because I’m 1/2 Irish on my moms side and I am like a bloodhound when it comes to learning history.
I love this musical
Thank you for sharing this! ( I like 48:44 & 1:39:50 Hadley's performance very much. And 2:03:21 the music is so beautiful!)
I just learned about this show today and I love other Schonberg/Boublil musicals, so I had to look it up! I searched for it on RUclips, just expecting to find a clip or two, but I found this! I watched the whole thing and really enjoyed it. Thank you so much for uploading this :)
I'm so glad I found this. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this!!
Thank you for uploading 😭❤
At least now we know what became of Raoul
I only heard about this show today, but thank you so much for uploading this!!!
Crazy Elegant Majectical Unicorn I’ve heard of this show a couple days ago. But it looks like a good show
I disapprove of Stephanie being upset.
I want to play Grace so badly
here's a video of my"Grace O'Malley" telling a story to young children in Lewes, DE a couple of years ago. ruclips.net/video/Ov0OeU6AGmM/видео.html
Carleigh Ethridge my name is Grace 😆
Hadley Fraser is God. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this! I’ve probably watched it a hundred times in the last four years. We performed it at our high school my freshman year, and this is the only full soundtrack I’ve been able to find!
27:23 My Favorite Song
One of the songs not in the play list is “ Ra Ra Tip Top” at 27:23. And “if I said I loved you is at 1:21:30. 1:25:00 is my other favorite, I don’t remember it’s name though. 1:30:00 is the christening! And don’t miss “let a father stand by his son” at 1:34:19 it’s BRUTAL. Then Tiernen’s surrender 1:40:01. Then 1:43:17, the Queen’s and Grace’s duet. 1:40:30 is Ireland’s lament. On the sea of life 1:51:33. Confrontation! 1:54:20. 1:55:50 Woman to woman. Two hours they spoke 1:59:50.
As always, thanks so much for posting this!
Thank you so much
Brilliant
The choice is yours 31:51

i adore hadley fraser and i love the traditional irish dancing (the male dancer witht he blonde hair is so so good) and stephanie block has a gorgeous voice and les miserables is my favorite musical with miss saigon not far behind, and yet somehow this is terrible???? i just do not get how it went so wrong with so much amazingness behind it. and why didn't anyone at any point not see that the music and lyrics are really not great, and that they also reuse a lot of the melodies from les mis and miss saigon?
anyway, i am so sad the experience seems to have turned hadley off to broadway permanently. and i hate that there is hardly any content of him in musicals on the internet. :( :(
SHE IS MY RELATIVE BY BLOOD!
♚ QUEEN OF OBSCURE PAIRINGS ♚ same!
Though I see why it was a flop, the basis for this story is very good.
Got into a discussion recently with other theatre nerds about the worst out-of-town tryouts we'd ever witnessed. People shared how charmless they found San Francisco's try-out of "Wicked," how much they loved Berkeley's mounting of "Amelie" and "Ain't Too Proud," how "The Producers","Spamalot", and "The Goodbye Girl" kept changing in Chicago, how "The Civil War" seemed to go on longer than the actual Civil War, that "High Fidelity" deserved more love, that "Head Over Heals" was somehow better before Broadway, and one older acquaintance claimed that back in the day he witnessed the nearly unendurable, 4+hour tryout of "Camelot" in Toronto. I was going to say the worst tryout I'd ever seen was "Sweet Smell of Success" with John Lithgow in Chicago, then I remembered "The Pirate Queen." Half the group had never heard of it, and the others were like "OMG, that was so bad I blocked it from my memory" and "The show from the Les Miz guys where they just set fire to a mountain of money on stage while hot guys riverdanced around it and Stephanie Block vocalized loudly for three hours without a melody?"
Camelot was such a mess that it got a big spread in "Life" magazine and it was hemmoraging chorus here right and left.
Does anyone know where to find the entire cast recording?
Bellismoooooo
1:20:49 Pirate Crew Sing
While watching I decided I got charged theater fees fora show I had tickets for and show closed. So I did pay
I'm also related to Niall of the Nine Hostages.
This musical sounds like les mis and miss Saigon had a baby
Was this a preview performance?
Yes! It was about a week and a half before it opened.
Oh Wow, so This was just a preview?, So was this before Broadway?, Did it make it to Broadway?.
Can someone upload this on Google Drive
You know you can download this super easy, right?

The actors are very good, but I dislike the way they portrayed her husband as a lecherous asshole ,not to mention all those Lord of the Dance -style ballets

Gráinne O'Malley died 1603
401 years ago she was infamously bucking gender roles and presentation, for herself and for her people’s survival.
Tell me again how gender and equal rights are a recent fight?
