Please keep up the good work, Economist. You haven't faltered in the 50 years that I have been reading you.

Really good video - with some highly realistic scenarios, given that (a) malaria keeps evolving to be resistant to even the newest drugs, (b) global warming will be spreading mosquitoes, (c) the health systems in the countries most at risk are already really fragile (think Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone).

I find this format confusing because of the fictional aspect.

sorry highly realistic to the point that it is distrubingly confusing.

For those who are interested in the topic, I'd recommend to read Jared Diamond and Jeffrey Sachs. They examine the effect of such comparative disadvantages, such as diseases, in countries that lack economic growth. Just take into consideration Singapore- the country started to develop only after they got rid of the various diseases some 50 years ago.

there's no malaria in west Swaziland because it's mountainous; but it's very poor anyway

Jay Gatsby I suspect Singapore started to develop at the time you claimed it did because of other factors as well not just the getting rid of diseases . Also Singapore still has diseases , they obviously haven't gotten rid of disease , just saying lol.

There is no scientific explanation of virology, and why is 7:15 this scientist's voice recorded in very low quality, as if the viewers felt that better. It is like a radio in poor Savannah. Also, avoiding malaria is about the lack of mosquito nets and social emancipation, not about medicine, and Economist is pretending that it is. This video is annoying.

Teemu M. I agree that controlling mosquitoes is about adding the right kind of fish to the rivers, having a mosquito abatement program that empties standing water and hands out tickets to those who do not empty standing water, curtail rice growing and change to another grain, AND mosquito netting, however, much of this video is very interesting and well produced.

I think the point is "What if?"
What if we take approach A? What if we take approach B?
What if we combine many approaches and attack on several fronts?
    What if we do nothing?
I realise there are some intellectually challenged people on this list - could they seek remedy by joining a genetic programme to enhance their understanding? As for theology, I am no expert but did the Bible state that God abhors evolution? Do you still drive on lead based fuel out of principle? or have you evolved your mindset to adopt cleaner fuels?
I think the Bible does mention giving man "dominium" over creation - that means we are in charge, and we should do what we can to keep nature in check - like building earthquake-proof, or blast proof tower blocks, like putting guard rails down the centre of multi-lane highways, like combating disease like malaria or polio.
To the guy who has a problem with pro-creation (I paraphrase!): Large families are a product of high mortality - both my grandparents had over 10 siblings, because my great grandparents needed enough kids to be supported in old age. My grandfather lost 3 siblings before they were 3 years old and a couple more when they were working in the Welsh coal mines fro 12 years of age. People living in "welfare states" (such as N America, Canada, Europe) no longer have "personal support schemes" but rely on the common wealth of their native countries (welfare programmes).
We can stand on the sidelines and heckle, some of us can help to a small degree, fortunately BG has the wherewithall to make an big impact as both spokesman and philanthropist - don't knock it! While he was working in his garage, I was learning 360 Assembler, but I'd like to think I would have had a similar goal if our roles were reversed - though unfortunately he'd have been on the receiving end of one of those diseases he has in his cross-hairs.

Den Jones Evolution is scientific fact, but do you actually think the bible said the term evolution ? lol , I don't think so . The illiterate goat herders that are responsible for the garbage in the bible wouldn't have ever heard of evolution . I'm only half way through that horrible book so maybe I haven't got to the part where it mentions evolution lol.

Den Jones In socialist Canada we do things like go to school and pay for it by working and getting student loans and become skilled and then get a job and do not rely on a " welfare state" every Canadian I know that has a job and has money and takes care of themselves didn't rely on this welfare state you falsely claim us to be reliant on . You've been propagandized into believing such nonsense and every Canadian that reads your comment is going to be impressed by your level of ignorance . You accuse "North America of being welfare state " this claim you should embarrassed by and I'll demonstrate by asking you a question , how many countries are in North America and list for us which ones are a "welfare states and which ones aren't ? hint; there's more than 2 countries in North America.

Den Jones I'm not in even sure if your position is pro socialism or anti socialism because of the way you wrote your comment but seriously though how insulting is it for you too accuse all people in Canada for example of being reliant on welfare programs. Every welfare program we have is funded by tax payers , it is us Canadians that pay for the welfare programs we don't rely on them we are the ones that created them and fund with our money not the government's money , the government's money is our money that we gave to the government willingly and happily to be used for things that we know helps our society .
