Year was 2004 ski season ...ski area snowbird Utah my son and I first met Glen Plake top of Harpers Ferry ski trail he was doing a photo shoot for Maui Jim sunglasses 😎 and of course the hair doo gave away the ski legend presence. Anyways he was funny and had us all in awe as he invited us on the run down Harpers to the chair.... needless to say he skied it fast and we all followed. Great experience and never to forgotten...... Legend 😁 GP
Glen Plake is a true champ! Loved meeting him and skiing with him at Squaw Valley last week for the 30th Anniversary of Blizzard of Ahhs! He is so down to earth, a truly humble and approachable guy. Loved on our whole family. When skiing with him he looks out for every member of the ski party and make sure everyone is having a great time. Scot Schmidt and Mike Hattrup were just the same. Ski legends are the best!
Comment, seriously, Glen is a fucking legend! I would argue that he was a catalyst for the beginning of snowboarding a just as much as Craig. Back in the day we had few heros. He was that rebel hero. Two planks be damn.
As a kid Glen Plake was my #1 sports hero, at a time when most kids were obsessing over Joe Montana or Jordan me and my buddies couldn't get enough of watching him huck off cliffs in ski films.
glen is still relevant because he loves the sport and the people in the sport. what other icon of skiing will come to the little places and share his time and talents with us little people. always been an idol of mine and so stoked to see him still killing it. on that , would love to see you come back to boston mills ohio! loading chairs for you was cool. now my kids ski . would love to see you back some day man. they would be so excited to see you
Well Said! 2 shops in town have Glen's autographed picture hanging on the wall, I would love to run into the guy on the mountain. The guy is Extreme Skiing's G.O.A.T
I saw him walking at ISPO this year and could not resist having a photo moment with him. He is not only the idol form Blizzards of aahhh's but such a down to earth guy with a great passion for the sport. Elan should be thrilled with him as an am-bad-ass-ador :-)
I use to go to church with Glen in Carson city and had the honor of ripping down the Face of heavenly with him and some buddies. We're boarder's. He won obviously. Amazing guy.
This guy was my hero in the 1980’s, watching this I was thinking ‘wow he looks old’, then realised that he is now in his fifties and is still in brilliant shape. ..... Still my hero ...... 👍
Plake's love for skiing is infectious! He is the best ambassador for our sport! I'll never for get hanging with him and the Mahre boys at Mammoth back in the 90's. Hey Glen,Thanks for rocking and sharing Skiing with everyone everywhere!
I skied and snowboarded mammoth occasionally when I was a child & teenager in the 90s. I didn't know he was there! I do remember seeing videos of "Mohawk guy" on TV screens in the chalets and warming huts, and I was amazed! I was like, this guy is nuts
"I wanna' ski where they ski." I grew up fascinated by watching you in your element, Mr. Plake. You wanna' know where I grew up skiing...North Dakota! Yeah...you read that right. A tiny little "mountain" in the Pembina Gorge called Frost Fire. If by any wild chance you would find yourself reading this...then let's do it. I currently reside in New Mexico. North Dakota. If ya' tell anyone that you ski and are passionate about it while stating that you grew up there then you're guaranteed a guffaw... Man alive, I hope you read this. Childhood hero.
What a legend! I think his experience and perspective helps Elan create better skis than the Germans. Much more open to new ideas. His experience in NC cracks me up, I had a great day at Ski Hesperus near Durango CO. Small hill great times.
My favorite ‘powder boards’ in the 80s were 205cm Elan RCGS. I just loved those skis until 1993 when I bent them skiing bumps on KT22 at Squaw like a dummy. I was bummed. I skied my 203 slalom skis and some old 175 Olin comps with varying degrees of success until 2005 when I bought parabolics. I couldnt believe how easy they made skiing. They still didnt carry speed or skate like those Elans though. I wish I still had ‘em!
So it's this guy that winners of the Rip the Stick contest are going to meet for heliskiing in Canada ? damnnn he's so simple and outstanding at the same time ! It must be so cool to go skiing with him :D
I remember when Glen did his honeymoon tour of small ski areas. I believe it was about 1991. I worked at a ski area in Nebraska and there was hardly a day I would miss skiing. Except for the one day Glen shows up I was so disappointed that I missed him. But my boss told me about it they all new how much I idealized him.
i was on 203cms at the time. funny how things change. they were heavy hard work, especially in powder. then i stepped into a set of new parabolics circa late 90's and wow, i said they that was just like cheating. !
Glen Plake is also my skiing hero. I did get the chance to meet him years ago in London, when he was doing some stuff with some buddies of mine. However they told me not to tell Plake that he was my hero, because he didn't see himself that way at all. Just talk normally they said - which is hard when you meet someone so special.
Fortunate enough to meet / ski with my teenage hero in Australia in the late 90's. A gentleman then, as he is now. You "generation entitlement" types should take note.... Modesty goes a long way!
ITS NOT A SKI MOUNTAIN OR RESORT IF IT DONT OFFER UNGROOMED TERRAIN! Some of theses resorts nowadays groom everything! It drives me absolutely insane!!! I wish I had a chance to just ride the chair with you ONCE GLENN! Ps mountain biking is a lot of fun to tho! Hahaha Absolutely nothing better then Bump skiing
My home Mt is Killington Vt. and when it snows they groom very little and Killington is the mogul capital of the east maybe of the US. They stay open well into May and sometimes into June, and yes it bumps up for sure. Anyone who skies the K often can bump its a way of life up there.
Douglas Tudor It depends on what part of the US you ski and which ski area you ski. If you’re in New England you are correct. If you go West you will find more terrain with moguls because there is more snow and more acres to ski. I am an Alta /Snowbird skier and we have 2500 acres at each resort. There are plenty of bumps/moguls. Even popular tourist resorts like Dear Valley and Park City know for groomers have more moguls than any resort in the east. It’s all about the snow and terrain and selling tickets to the average skier to pay the bills and make a profit.
Love Elans! Just subbed! We have a ski and travel channel too and I ski on Elans - went to the Alps a month ago and Sunday River last week and loved it!! Check our videos and let us know what you think!
blizzard of ahhhs...? plake dropping in after schmidt in chamonix france. remember license to thrill...dance yourself to death...scot and glen are my heros. listen to 808 state pacific for a head trip.
skiing has always been a very pricey sport...most sports that requires gear and equipment are expensive.. Sad people gotta say “rich white man sport” totally stupid thing to say on her part.

K2 Extremes.. his signature model and a fantastic ski for soft conditions.

When Glenn takes a moment to reflect on his life , it must be a wild and way cool trip in the past. He seems so blessed . Great interview 👍

This guy inspired me to buy 200cm KV Comps in 1989 with Marker mmr bindings.
i was on 203cms at the time. funny how things change. they were heavy hard work, especially in powder. then i stepped into a set of new parabolics circa late 90's and wow, i said they that was just like cheating. !
Bought a ski video in 1988 called the blizzard of Ahhs. My first understanding of extreme skiing with this guy .
Nice work Local ski areas usually good deals to get to the top of the mountain . Plake the legend we all skied 210 Knows the mountains small and big
Love His laugh.

Fortunate enough to meet / ski with my teenage hero in Australia in the late 90's. A gentleman then, as he is now. You "generation entitlement" types should take note.... Modesty goes a long way!
THE man
Dang so cool. The coolest.
Elan needs a graphic and sidewall like the Dynamic VR17. People go for the graphic and the attributes of the ski.
The easiest thing you can do is be nice to people. -Glen Plake
Glen Plake rocks, Elan Rip stick 106 rocks,
Would you take Glen Plake’s life or the life of the richest person in the world? Glen’s life all the way!!

Back in the 80's I sold tee shirts that read, "Stop the brutal grooming!"
couldnt agree more. Hate it when they groom too much. But....theres always the trees!..thats where youll find us.
Just did yesterday. Great guy !
