Canonically, Stelle fought an emanator of propagation, alone, for an entire minute. Which is especially crazy, cause that thing is literally a walking army.

Stelle is also an artificial lifeform that has her memory erased. An artificial lifeform made to harness the power of the stellaron. So it makes sense to me.
I suspect Ruan Mei might have made Stelle by the commission of Elio, at the very start she said "Ruan Mei, she's someone new... yet familiar." whish plopped that headcannon between my braincells.
@@Utrilus I don't think Stelle was actually purpose made to hold the stelleron. Considering Blade states that he knows us, and that we were Kafka's only partner who was able to last by her side. If anything, she was modified with the intention of housing and withstanding a stelleron.

In my personal blind experience this was wild with caelus, this situation of just meeting her, kind of having some tension and then he just "I research toilets", I thought caelus was just so nervous he said that and messed the tension completely, then it clicked, I ate the cake and felt into her trap, it was an unexpected twist ngl, experiencing things blindfolded is always the way to go
stelle has a mice voice actress especially on english. sad you rarely hear them talk but thank god its a lot more often than genshins
It feels like Ruan Mei is in the middle of her instigating villain arc, right on that fine line between an epiphany and falling into obsession with slowly degrading morals. I wouldn't be surprised if they come back to this a long while later and make it so that the trailblazer becomes their anchoring point that prevents them from taking that dive.
I like your thinking. There’s lots of potential still for her as a character in the story, especially down the line.
It wouldn't surprise me if later it was revealed that Ruan Mei was commissioned by Elio to make Stelle, a vessel for the stellaron. Might be she has already made the perfect lifeform.

I'd describe Ruan Mei as being basically like Dr. MEI from HI3. They're not actively malicious but their intellect and methods isolates them heavily from the people around them. I feel the former is basically what the latter could have potentially been like had she never met Kevin and the Honkai didn't exist to screw things up.

I think she's not really evil.
I think she's more sociopathic than anything else. Especially when it comes to her research regarding lifeforms. To her, achieving answers to her questions is of utmost importance than the morality of her experiments regardless of whatever their results may be.
Though we do see that she's capable of caring for others despite being emotionally stunted. And is willing to acknowledge her mistakes and even act on fixing their consequences.
I'm really excited in seeing more of her and Dr. Ratio in the story~!
I really love her character to be honest
Well, we know Dr. Ratio is invited to Penacony, so we will definitely see him again. Ruan Mei is clearly anti-social so it's probably rare for her to show up

Just because she has the ability to care doesn’t mean she actually chooses to give more care. Her being a sociopath might be the reason she does the bad actions but that’s just the understanding of her actions, not an excuse. She’s still evil for what she’s done, she had to learn to care even then she only grew to care for her creatures, that’s the extent it goes to.
She’s evil and it’s pretty clear cut when you look at what she’s done, she may value her research but that comes to the detriment of everyone else in this case and she only cared about getting caught at the beginning.
I don’t see any reasoning as to how she isn’t morally evil. She may not have the desire to be evil but that doesn’t stop her from being evil as a result.
@@thederp9309 So is a lion evil when it kills children or a Nile Crocodile when it devours the boatman. Of course she is not evil if she can't comprehend what she is doing as wrong. You can still punish her or stop her because of pragmatic reasons. We put down the lion because its a threat and we kill the croc because it is a threat. Not because they are evil.
If you deal with someone incapable of understanding their wrongdoing that doesn't mean that you just let them go. You still have to punish them even if they are not a moral agent. In the inverse people with a low enough IQ get punished less in court because we know they can't actually understand the wrongness of their actions. This is why super stupid people if they are violent get sent to homes since they are not evil but they are a threat.

Humans are much more developed, you also make it seem like there isn’t a logical way to comprehend morality. So your example of lions and crocodiles is invalid in such a debate due to the differences is biology and capabilities.
She nearly killed a lot of people of the space station and she even admitted to knowing what she did was wrong but didn’t care, she knew drugging us was wrong but it was convenient. She does understand such concepts, she is a genius after all. That perspective also implies that real psychopaths who feel little to no empathy can’t be condemned as evil as they don’t inherently feel empathy. That’s ridiculous, as they usually have experience of knowing it’s wrong morally from other people saying it’s wrong.
Humans didn’t evolve to make up such moral principles but we choose to live by them, that perspective implies that those who choose to participate in moral introspection can’t be criticised for their lack of willingness. Cognitive empathy is a thing, using a logical basis to understand what evil and good are on an objective level.
She very much does understand right from wrong. That’s painfully obvious. The results are just as valid as their intention, a person that wishes to do good but is misguided and does bad actions can be considered evil. She may not desire to be evil, but the results are destructive and dangerous which is why she wanted a cover up.
is it fair some people are set behind the starting line just because of a disorder? Of course not, but things aren’t inherently fair, they aren’t judged for being psychopaths but for the actions they commit. She nearly killed many people, that’s obviously bad. She wanted to avoid getting caught and used us.
In the quest it’s also revealed she can alter your brain. That’s how she was physically able to prevent you from speaking about her, she understands the biology to such a degree she can alter someone’s brain whenever. And if she is a psychopath which are born with a lessened ability of empathy due to their brain structure then it means she actively refuses to to change the part that hurts others.
The way this VOD suddenly ends with Mina making noises about Ruan Mei is very on brand.

Ruan mei is a little bit tsundere about her cat cakes, she act like she doesn't care about them and left them, but constantly asking about their condition to trailblazer and asking if they can send photos of the cat cakes to her, even promising to visit them again, it's kinda cute
She doesn’t act like she doesn’t care… she genuinely had very little care for the until the end of the quest. She basically had to learn basic human empathy. She isn’t a tsundere but actually just seems more like she has anti social personality disorder (psychopathy/sociopathy).
That would explain why she had little care for her and actions. She didn’t care about the damage she would’ve done but was more concerned about getting caught causing her to manipulate us and drug us so we wouldn’t spill. That’s it. She has no desire to be evil, but is still just evil.

@@thederp9309 i dont know i interpret it as she didnt expect them to be so attached to her and shes still dealing with her own trauma of losing her parents so shes not ready to be mother. so she gave them up for adoption to us basically lol. also think of it this way. if you assemble a lego figure and it develops sentience and starts calling you its parent would you instantly develop maternal/fraternal feelings towards it? she texts us to check in on how they are doing so she does care about them. also play to the end of the critter pick quest.
I don't think she's really evil, she's just really irresponsible and not caring. And I guess she feels proud about it, overall she just seems confused, but putting up a strong front

In all seriousness tho, their motives (creating the perfect life form) and the fact that they both take no responsibility for their creations. Both also had a tad bit of post-nut clarify once they both saw how badly they fucked up, clarity that did not last as they kept on doing what they do. (I will say Victor stopped afterward, but to those who actually read Frankenstein… if you know you know)
It also reminds me blade runner. The creator gives the creation extreme short lifespan to keep in control.

I think Stelle would be her perfect creation. Stelle, isn't she an artificial lifeform too. One commissioned by Elio. Considering the memory erasure being part of her story. And the quest chain starts with Stelle going "Ruan Mei is someone new... yet familiar."
Theres a file that you can find in the seclusion zone on top of one of the tables that contains info on all her creations. The last entry talks about how the emanator is rigged to self destruct after being alive for 56 seconds, I found it very early during exploration and forgot about it until I saw it happen in front of me, but before that I was bamboozled when he did not drop down from 1% hp lol.
But that is clearly bullshit. If that really were the case then nothing about the quest made even the slightest amount of sense. Why even bother if the bug was going to die? IMO the writing for this quest was beyond trash tier.
@@GeorgeMonet Because Emanators are high-level weapons of mass destruction. A creature like that, following the Path that led to the Swarm Disaster being a thing and that required several Aeons to come together to stop, being alive for even a minute could lead to the station being engulfed in people-eating bugs if left alone to multiply.
Trailblazer was there as pest control and a distraction. Ruan Mei probably didn't want her little experiment to proliferate outside of the Seclusion Zone and interfere with Herta's stuff and the SU.

The single best part of ZZZ beyond the flow of combat is how active in the storyline Belle and Wise are with actual regular VA lines. And I really love Belle's VA performance to boot. Hoyo really makes progress with MC from game to game.

As a person who has abandonment issues the part with the grey bean/ashy paste critter made me sad when i played it, but i am glad things worked out for it.
I love how expressive Stelle has been as of late.
I'm seeing a lot of takes that effective read "Ruan Mei's not evil, she's just uncaring and irresponsible". I don't know if Mina will ever see this but I *gotta* put my rebuttal out into the ether.
Ruan Mei isn't uncaring and irresponsible people; you're thinking of Herta. The thing that keeps Herta from doing things like, for example, cloning an Emanator is generally her own attention span and patience - both of which, much like her puppets, are short. She doesn't DO a lot of 'crazy' stuff purely because its more trouble than its worth 9 times outta 10. Which actually means she forms a VERY interesting contrast with Miss Ruan Mei here.
Ruan Mei does care about her creations, at least I think so. But she lacks the ability to process that emotion. Think about her actions a bit more; she almost immediately invades our personal space when we meet her and she switches off our ability to talk freely (about her) all because of her own trust issues. And in her lab recordings, we get to see a very short lived...well, at least in English, it sounds like a nervous breakdown - a minor one, but still. Ruan Mei is emotionally stunted - her cute, weird, plush animal things are deeply confused about their feelings for her, because SHE is deeply confused about her feelings towards most people. She doesn't have a grasp on boundaries, other people's OR her own. She's a Genius - a person who primarily deals with the world through the lens of logical analysis but as we should all know by now - that has never been how emotions work. She didn't clone the Emanator because she's reckless or just wanted to see what would happen, she cloned it because after going through so many perceived failures, she was beginning to question if the Question she dedicated her whole life to solving even had an answer. She wasn't emotionally ready to handle that thought, and its impossible for her to 'logic' her way into handling it either, so her only recourse was to double down and really try something brand new.
She was confident it would work, but she didn't allow herself enough time to think if it 'should' work.
She's not evil - she's emotionally immature and possibly stunted. And given how Herta acts, or hell how Ratio acts, plus the snippets we have about the other genius', I suspect this is something of a running theme for them.
I agree so much and this is well said. She is such an interesting character to me, very fun to think about.
Her profile character stories talk a bit more about her past and how she perceived emotion and love in a different way even from a young age. She clearly appreciates it and is touched by it, and I think she loved her family very much in her own way. She definitely struggles to process these things though, and I suspect whatever happened to her parents seemed to make her issues worse. It sounds like she partly blames herself for what happened and she went into an unhealthily obsessive research phase shortly after. I'm really curious to hear more about the story there.

Honestly it would have been great to have the Trailblazer call her out at the end telling her that they would have helped her regardless and that the drugging because she doesn’t trust others was entirely unnecessary, essentially taking away one’s choices and making herself more of the villain because of her own expectations, ironically closing the door on an opportunity to truly understand life. Just being able to challenge the notions of her own thought process which could well have started her on her own character arc

She treats lives as targets for experiments and research, therefore having little care about them. Cat cakes are only a type of the creature she created, there are much more she left behind.
