I just saw them in concert after only hearing a handful of their songs, and woah... it was a life-changing experience for me! For starters, their set was in pitch darkness. Hands down the best song on the album. I can't tell you how many times I'll just be up at 4am just listening to this and to stare at my ceiling and think. Words can't even describe the melody in this song. From the beginning sounding like an evil open world to around 2:19 where it sounds like the sun is rising over the evil world and brings happiness to it. The rest of the song has an evil, helpless vibe to it while having a sound of hope added into it. Amazing.
This track blows me away. I don't even know how to describe the moods on this one. The amazing melody, the dissonance, the atmosphere. I've been listening to Autechre for a while now, but something about this track really stands out as a monument of sorts compared to the rest of their discography.

Strangely, Exai was one of the first Autechre albums that I really "understood", after Incunabula and Amber... Having listened to Autechre's entire discography now, Exai remains one of my favorites, along with Confield and Tri Repetae.

My take in the 1990s was that they had a limited number of musical ideas that they buried under fussy production. A lot of their early work sounds like the Miami Vice soundtrack with glitchy beats; neat, but not worth the plaudits. Over time I've come to appreciate how well their mid-period music has dated and I like them a lot more, but you have to admit they're very erratic. And although their experimentation is bracing there's no theoretical component, so it comes across as flash, and it led down a dead end. My hunch is that after spending six weeks finessing some glitchy beats they're unable to admit that some tracks weren't worth all that work, which is why they used to put out so many EPs. They had no quality control. This particular song almost feels regressive, it has none of the energy and cleverness of their best work. I love Autechre. Longtime fan since about 2000. My only complaint is they release too much music without thought for what can be properly edited or cut. That's always an issue with computer generated music. I appreciate how AFX keeps his releases tighter. I own all of Autrechre on CD up to about 2013 then it got a bit crazy with an 'album ' being five discs of music. I think that's laziness in self criticism? just my two cents. I don't care for the argument of digital takes up no space, it still takes time to appreciate and i am sure not all of it is worth sharing? hm
I'd love to see Autechre do some soundtrack work for Shin Megami Tensei. This track for example expresses a sinister tone underneath, with breaks of angelic synths and reverb mixed throughout. Autechre definently capture the uncertainty and hope ofwhat the end of the world would be like. At least from our imaginations.

5:39 is the best part imo
I love Autechre. Longtime fan since about 2000. My only complaint is they release too much music without thought for what can be properly edited or cut. That's always an issue with computer generated music. I appreciate how AFX keeps his releases tighter. I own all of Autrechre on CD up to about 2013 then it got a bit crazy with an 'album ' being five discs of music. I think that's laziness in self criticism? just my two cents. I don't care for the argument of digital takes up no space, it still takes time to appreciate and i am sure not all of it is worth sharing? hm
im in awe of this sounds...
Cringe
@@itsfingerintime5805 I was really high on meth OK
Hard to top Kozuka's recent work, but that would be amazing indeed.
Music from another world.
I feel mashed just listening to this, it’s so so so so very good
This and recks on are my two favs from this album.
My pretentious friend with annoyingly interesting music taste led me here.
And are you happy about that?
+Ekte Boi I'm probably just jealous tbh. This is good shit
Hehe, glad to hear that.
+Ekte Boi Idk tho, we seem set to leave the EU and I guess we'll have to see how this all pans out.
There wasn't a lot of solid fact or absolutes in the debate in the sense I would've liked tbh. Much confusion
notch? he led me here
